House of the Dragon star Eve Best and The Penguin‘s Carmen Ejogo will lead a new BBC drama from Nicôle Lecky, Wild Cherry.

Following the success of Lecky’s BAFTA-winning Mood, the BBC and production firm Firebird Pictures (Wilderness, The Jetty) on Wednesday unveiled the cast for the new six-part series. Grief can be an all-consuming affair. While adults struggle with their difficult emotions, the kids have it harder. They witness someone dear to them leave their world but cannot comprehend how or why it happens. In that delicate age, they often do not realise the irrevocability of death. ‘Daddy’s Head’ explores the same themes through a horror tale. It follows a young boy struggling to cope with his father’s recent death. As it happens, his stepmother faces her own emotional struggles. Benjamin Barfoot's feature debut, Daddy's Head, abides by anonymous tendencies of eerie folkloric horror. There aren't outright explanations — storytelling is handled with the lightest touch. You're plunged into a family's confrontation with a nameless doppeldemon preying on their grief-stricken state. Barfoot doesn't care why said entity is attacking or from whence it came. Daddy's Head focuses on a woodland creature with frightening features that include what's mentioned in the title. Barfoot excels when unleashing his monster's creepiest attacks, but the story tends to trudge forward without feeling complete. Your patience for whimsical, ungraspable horrors will be tested — unless that's entirely your vibe.

When it comes to film intrigue, there are several methods and plot twists a writer can use to shock the audience. One of the most powerful twists comes when a movie takes a single event or plotline and completely changes the audience's interpretation of that moment.

These twists work incredibly well because audiences are predisposed to identify with the main character's point of view. Going back and seeing how events play out from another character's perspective is challenging to pull off, but there are more than a few examples of a film completely shocking the audience with this plot device.

Apple TV+ released the third and final trailer of the 10-part dark comedy series “Physical,” starring and executive produced by Rose Byrne. There is a great story of directorial ingenuity related to Willem Dafoe's performance in "American Psycho." Mary Haddon asked him to play his scenes as a private eye investigating the disappearance of Patrick Bateman's colleague in three different ways. First, he would act like he was totally clueless; then as if he was suspicious; and lastly, as if he was absolutely certain the psychotic yuppie was involved. She then cut the different takes together to keep audiences wrong-footed about how much his character knew.

"The Strays" plays like writer-director Nathaniel Martello-White attempted a similar trick, helming three different versions of the same story in a different genre, then taking an act from each. What we get is a frustratingly uneven movie that is scarier as psychological horror, works better as a social drama, and flunks completely as a home invasion thriller.

The influence of Jordan Peele hangs heavily over the film.
