Seeing his father's face looking back at him through the narrow confines of the air vent in his bedroom was unnerving in itself, but what made it even more terrifying for young Isaac is the foreboding fact that his dad recently died in a car accident. That's just one of many nightmarish images and question-raising scenarios witnessed by a boy and his struggling stepmother when their isolated postmodern house by the woods is stalked by something wearing an all-too-familiar face in Daddy's Head.
With the new horror film now streaming on Shudder, Daily Dead had the great pleasure of talking with Benjamin Barfoot about writing, directing, editing, and composing the music for Daddy's Head, which explores the effects of family-fueled grief and expertly walks the line between ambiguous horror and straightforward scares, leaving you wondering what exactly is real until the film's pivotal final frame.

Filmmaker Benjamin Barfoot brings eerie atmosphere and new nightmare fuel in the form of a terrifying creature in Daddy’s Head, and an exclusive new clip introduces just one of many bone-chilling scares.
Daddy’s Head debuts exclusively on Shudder on October 11.
In the film, “In the wake of his father’s untimely death, a young boy is left in the eerie solitude of a sprawling country estate with his newly widowed stepmother. Struggling to navigate the overwhelming task of parenthood, his stepmother grows distant, leaving their fragile bond at risk of collapse. Amidst the growing tension, the boy begins to hear unsettling sounds echoing through the corridors and is soon haunted by the presence of a grotesque creature bearing a disturbingly familiar resemblance to his late father.
“As the boy’s warnings are dismissed as the imagination of a grieving child, the sinister entity tightens its grip on their crumbling lives.

Grief can be an all-consuming affair. While adults struggle with their difficult emotions, the kids have it harder. They witness someone dear to them leave their world but cannot comprehend how or why it happens. In that delicate age, they often do not realise the irrevocability of death. ‘Daddy’s Head’ explores the same themes through a horror tale. It follows a young boy struggling to cope with his father’s recent death. As it happens, his stepmother faces her own emotional struggles. Written and directed by Benjamin Barfoot, this film is now streaming on Shudder.

Despite its title’s oddly dirty undertones, “Daddy’s Head” is a cerebral metaphor about working through change and processing grief. At least, that’s what it wants to be in theory.
Like phrenology (the outdated practice of mapping skull bumps to diagnose illnesses elsewhere in the body), Benjamin Barfoot’s second feature suggests an arcane method to the writer/director’s madness. This remixed successor of both the 1998 family drama “Stepmom” and the horror classic “The Babadook” can feel like blindly fingering across someone else’s scalp at times. It starts as a simple story about a young widow (Julia Brown) raising her orphaned stepson (Rupert Turnbull) after a car crash kills her husband (Charles Aitken), but the plot takes on a monster mythology that’s almost too esoteric to grasp.
The script’s symbolism is annoyingly dense to decipher, and the opaque quality Barfoot’s story develops as it...

Benjamin Barfoot's feature debut, Daddy's Head, abides by anonymous tendencies of eerie folkloric horror. There aren't outright explanations — storytelling is handled with the lightest touch. You're plunged into a family's confrontation with a nameless doppeldemon preying on their grief-stricken state. Barfoot doesn't care why said entity is attacking or from whence it came. Daddy's Head focuses on a woodland creature with frightening features that include what's mentioned in the title. Barfoot excels when unleashing his monster's creepiest attacks, but the story tends to trudge forward without feeling complete. Your patience for whimsical, ungraspable horrors will be tested — unless that's entirely your vibe.

The last two decades of television have delivered an absolute lion’s share of Arthurian legends brought to life. Each series has had its own unique style, from the quirky humor of Merlin to the sex appeal of Camelot, though none are quite like MGM+’s epic new adaptation of Bernard Cornwell’s The Winter King. While the series is rife with pagan mysticism, it is far more focused on being rooted in the realism of its historical context. Though the pagan priestesses and even Merlin (Nathaniel Martello-White) may have intuitive foresight, they are not all-powerful beings capable of otherworldly magic. Set in the period of late antiquity in Great Britain, following the Roman occupation and amid the conflict with the Saxons, The Winter King is a sprawling tale about a warrior’s rise to power during uncertain times. In this, Arthur (Iain De Caestecker) is not the rightful heir to the throne,...

Warning: Spoilers for The Winter King season 1 below!
The Winter King episode 9 clip teases the arrival of a key character from Arthurian legend, potentially setting up the introduction of Lancelot. The show has often deviated from the source material, with Ceinwyn being betrothed to a Saxon being another new edition. Saving Lancelot's introduction for season 2 would align with the events of Cornwell's sequel novel and make him a major player who complicates Arthur's life.
A clip from The Winter King episode 9 teases the imminent arrival of a key character from King Arthur lore. Arthurian myth has been thoroughly mined in movies and TV shows over the decades, though The Winter King - which adapts The Warlord Chronicles novels by Bernard Cornwell - brings something a little fresher to the table. The MGM+ series takes away most of the fantasy elements to tell a more grounded tale and is inspired by historical fact.

Netflix’s horror thriller The Strays has left people comparing it to other thrillers like Get Out. Directed by Nathaniel Martello-White, The Strays follows the story of a woman named Neve (Ashley Medekwe) whose past is haunting her. In her past life, before any change took place, her real name was Cheryl.
As a light-skinned Black woman, we see how Neve, or Cheryl, starts a completely new life in London; one where she fits in and is surrounded by white people. The life Neve found for herself in this upper-class society will soon come crashing down and everything she worked for will be ruined by the past life she left behind.
The Strays may not be your usual thriller but it discusses important themes that made it find success on Netflix when it first aired. Some of the topics it discussed include race, class, abandoning your responsibility, generational trauma, and...

The Winter King is a fresh and brutal adaptation of the King Arthur legend set in the Post-Roman Dark Age of Britain. The show combines the high-stakes politics of Game of Thrones with the intimate set pieces of the Arthurian legend. Executive producers Julie Gardner and Lachlan MacKinnon discuss the show's authenticity, the portrayal of female characters, and the casting of Stuart Campbell as Derfel.
The legend of King Arthur gets a fresh and brutal new take with The Winter King. Adapted from Bernard Cornwell's Warlord Chronicles trilogy of novels, the historical fiction novel acts as a retelling of Arthur's rise to become a king of Britain, setting the story in the Post-Roman Dark Age of the country and finding him trying to work his way back from banishment with the support of Merlin, Nimue, Morgan, and Derfel and put a stop to the invading Saxons.

The Winter King struggles to make Arthur a compelling character, lacking a clear motivation or character arc compared to the more developed supporting players. The show missed an opportunity by skipping over Arthur's time in Gaul, where he matured and developed his skills and this could have provided insight into his desires and goals. Despite its current shortcomings, The Winter King has the potential to turn around Arthur's story and make him more interesting by introducing challenges, such as killing his friend and taking on new responsibilities as a ruler.

When it comes to film intrigue, there are several methods and plot twists a writer can use to shock the audience. One of the most powerful twists comes when a movie takes a single event or plotline and completely changes the audience's interpretation of that moment.
These twists work incredibly well because audiences are predisposed to identify with the main character's point of view. Going back and seeing how events play out from another character's perspective is challenging to pull off, but there are more than a few examples of a film completely shocking the audience with this plot device.

The Winter King takes a realistic approach to the King Arthur myth, removing much of the fantasy elements. Nimue's character in the show is a more human version, with a backstory tied to Merlin and a traumatic event that affects her powers. Nimue's connection to water and her role as the Lady of the Lake draws inspiration from Celtic folklore and Roman mythology.

The Winter King episode 2 features a shocking Avalon raid that rivals the brutality of Game of Thrones' Red Wedding. It is unexpected and makes for a tough watch. The massacre at Avalon is particularly shocking because it comes early in the series and there is little build-up to it. The peacefulness of Avalon is shattered by the sheer brutality of the attack. "The Winter King" sets the stage for an epic fantasy show, combining Arthurian legend and historical fact in a gripping narrative. Arthur's banishment by his father is rooted in his illegitimate status and the belief that he failed to save his brother's life. Derfel's forbidden romance with Nimue and his secret warrior training pave the way for future conflicts, while Merlin seeks out Arthur to save Britain from the evil future King Mordred.
The Winter King's first episode reinvents the legend of King Arthur and sets the pieces in place for a dramatic first season. The Winter King is the first novel in Last Kingdom series creator Bernard Cornwell's The Warlord Chronicles, which also consists of Enemy of God and Excalibur. These novels combined Arthurian legend with historical fact and stripped back on the more overt fantasy elements of the tale.

Outlander is going on hiatus after its midseason finale and will not return until a later date, leaving fans eagerly waiting for its comeback. The Winter King, a new historical fiction series, premieres on August 20, 2023, and could be a perfect replacement for Outlander during its hiatus. The Winter King has similar elements to Outlander, including historical drama, action sequences, and even overlapping cast members, making it an ideal substitute.
Outlander is going on hiatus following its midseason finale on August 11, 2023, and the historical drama series sadly won't return until an unannounced later date. Starz split the show's seventh season in two, so the first half has already aired, and the second half will drop sometime later next year. However, in the meantime, fans of the television series can look forward to a new show that could fill the void left by Outlander's absence.

The Winter King cast brings together a diverse and exciting ensemble to bring the first in the trilogy of Bernard Cornwell's King Arthur novels to life. The show looks to be the latest medieval television hit with MGM+ releasing the series with the first season consisting of 10 episodes which will debut on August 20, 2023. The Winter King is based on The Warlord Chronicles by The Last Kingdom author Bernard Cornwell. Though a historical fiction, The Winter King cast will bring to life some legendary characters who audiences are certainly familiar with.
There have been many King Arthur movies over the years with each project looking to tell a new version of the classic hero. The Winter King begins with the first book in Cornwell's trilogy (also titled The Winter King) and follows the young Arthur who has been banished from the kingdom as a warlord and seeks to protect the throne.

There is a great story of directorial ingenuity related to Willem Dafoe's performance in "American Psycho." Mary Haddon asked him to play his scenes as a private eye investigating the disappearance of Patrick Bateman's colleague in three different ways. First, he would act like he was totally clueless; then as if he was suspicious; and lastly, as if he was absolutely certain the psychotic yuppie was involved. She then cut the different takes together to keep audiences wrong-footed about how much his character knew.
"The Strays" plays like writer-director Nathaniel Martello-White attempted a similar trick, helming three different versions of the same story in a different genre, then taking an act from each. What we get is a frustratingly uneven movie that is scarier as psychological horror, works better as a social drama, and flunks completely as a home invasion thriller.
The influence of Jordan Peele hangs heavily over the film.
