The Grammy for Best New Artist can be a double-edged sword. The award has been associated with a certain “curse” where winners in the category tend to fade away from the public consciousness rather quickly, especially in comparison to their fellow nominees. With a recent coronation of yet another Best New Artist, Olivia Rodrigo, I think it’s time to truly reevaluate whether the award is really a kiss of death. Let’s specifically take a look at the 2010s and onward.
A couple of winners fall into the “genre favorite” category, where the winning artist didn’t become a huge crossover star but still enjoys success in their particular field. For example, the 2010s opened with a win for country group Zac Brown Band. A lot of people mark their win with an asterisk, since that year’s breakout superstar, Lady Gaga, was deemed ineligible due to a Grammy...

Let’s get this out of the way: The eponymous bird at the center of “The Starling” isn’t real, though the emotions he stirs in the people around him is. If that’s not the set-up for a quirky mid-budget feel-good feature, well, what is? The kind of throwback dramedy that streamers should be making these days — because the studios sure aren’t — the Melissa McCarthy-starring film will likely charm the feathers off its audience when it hits Netflix, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s good. It is, however, something few contemporary films dare to be: both satisfying and self-contained.
There’s no wider Starling Expanded Universe out there — bad news for a bossy blackbird that appears in the film’s opening credits — and while the finality of the film’s conclusion doesn’t entirely feel earned, there’s something charming about this fairy tale-esque story...

Supergirl Season 4 Episode 21
It’s high time for everyone in Kara’s world to know that she’s Supergirl, though I suppose for now I’ll settle for Alex knowing. Any return to Midvale is welcome, and it’s always great to hear The Format (Nate Ruess’s band before fun.) The neural pathways thing feels like scifi gibberish flimflam but sure, fine, whatever. If nothing else, it allows for a great montage of memories of Alex and Kara flooding back as Alex realizes Supergirl is her sister. The beautiful visual of kara pulling sunlight from the plants, trees, moss is truly stunning as well.
The Danvers sisters are the heart of this show, and in a season that feels like it has gone so far astray, it feels right for...

Over the past half-decade, superproducer Jeff Bhasker has evolved from a behind-the-boards impresario into a de facto hitmaker. Since connecting with Kanye West to confect half of the songs on the perilously moody 808s & Heartbreak in 2008, the Socorro, New Mexico–raised musician elevated his profile with credits on projects with Drake, Lana Del Rey, Taylor Swift, and Bruno Mars, and netted two Grammys for his work with Jay Z, West, and fun., the latter of which helped earned him a Producer of the Year (Non-Classical) nomination at the 2013 ceremony. This year he’s up for the same award again, for his work on individual songs (Elle King’s “Last Damn Night,” Cam’s “Burning House”) and full-length albums (Mark Ronson’s Uptown Special, Nate Ruess’s Grand Romantic). You might think there are too many awards shows. You'd be wrong. Because if they constantly turn out performances like the ten below, we should have a new awards telecast every single day. Here are the ten best awards show performances of 2015. 10. Chris Stapleton and Justin Timberlake at the Country Music Association Awards, "Tennessee Whiskey" Chris Stapleton is undoubtedly the year's breakout country music star, and he even has a shot at Album of the Year at the upcoming Grammy Awards. This duet with Justin Timberlake was inspired, rad, and a pulsing, soulful version of a bona fide smash. 9. Kelly Clarkson at the Billboard Music Awards, "Invincible" With the possible exception of the #2 artist on this list, Kelly Clarkson is perhaps our most trusted live pop performer. "Invincible" gave Clarkson a chance to belt, endear us with her casual vulnerability, and wow us with some closing notes worthy of another "American Idol" crown.

Concerts are one of those things I’m actually weirdly leery of going to. It’s tough to fall in love with an artist’s music on an album and then go see them live only to discover that voice sounds nothing in person like it did in the studio. It makes a person wonder about smoke, mirrors, autotone, and whatever technical audio voodoo was performed to create that sound. If I’m going to shell out the money, there’s part of me that really doesn’t want the magic ruined.
When I found out Hozier was going to be playing in my adopted city, it wasn’t even a question. I got up early and hovered over my computer in order to ensure that I would be amongst the first of the ecstatic ticket holders. At this point, I can say I haven’t been this excited about...

Had Nate Ruess sung lead for bands in the late ’70s, he might've sounded like the improbable love-child of Kris Kristofferson, Waylon Jennings, and Pete Townshend, with a hint of Billy Joel. Instead, Ruess has found fame in both the 2000s and the 2010s, as the former front man of the Format and, later, as the face of fun., which earned two Grammys in 2013 off sleeper hit "We Are Young." Still, a guy can always dream, and for his first short film, “The Grand Romantic,” debuting this week on Apple Music, Ruess has taken a bit of artistic license in reimagining his career. Making his acting debut for veteran video director Anthony Mandler (who directed fun.'s “Some Nights” and "Carry On" clips), Ruess plays a version of himself going up against the music industry of 40 years ago, when all some musicians had to worry about was staying on...

Thirty-two artists went into the Knockout Rounds; only 20 came out. At this stage of the game and every competition going forward, it gets ore and more difficult to rank the performances. Several of the winning Knockout performances were equal in many ways, but that?s not how ranking works. You only get one artist per rank. As Nate Ruess joined the coaches and their artists, the talent was ratcheted up several notches, making some of the artist choices painfully difficult.
