Fans of the Beastie Boys were shocked and saddened to hear of the passing of Adam "McA" Yauch, after a long battle with cancer, on Friday (May 4).

Many took to the Web to mourn and remember what the musician's work with the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame rap trio meant to them. And almost as soon after the news of Yauch's death broke, Beastie Boys-related phrases were dominating the majority of the worldwide trends on Twitter, with topics and hashtags like #Ripmca and "No Sleep Til Brooklyn."

Fans like @sbpeterson expressed overwhelming sadness, writing, "You'll be missed McA - I'm simply devastated," while others referred to Yauch as an "icon" and a "legend."

Dick Clark's Death: Is It Too Soon For Twitter Jokes?
Twitterverse is buzzing with memories, jokes and a suggested hologram of the late host.

By Kara Klenk

It's hardly been 24 hours since legendary television personality Dick Clark died from a heart attack. While most are remembering Clark with admiration and reverence — including countless celebrities he helped to make stars — some have taken to social-media outlets to make jokes and question if a hologram version of Clark is forthcoming.

While most celebrities celebrated Clark on Twitter, like @MariahCarey who tweeted a photo of them together with the message "R.I.P. Dick Clark. Your memory will live on eternally as an incredible legend," actor/comedian @DenisLeary took a different tack, referring to Clark as a "leather faced syrup voiced lizard" person. This prompted a lot of "too soon" responses, including one from blogger Perez Hilton, who commented on his blog,...

Tupac Takes Over The Web Through Hologram-Inspired Memes
Holo-Pac parodies place the late rapper in the cast of 'Titanic' and Jem's backup band.

Tupac's hologram performance at Coachella 2012

It's been a crazy week for Tupac Shakur, who, despite having passed away in 1996, has been all over the news after his hologram performance at Coachella. The intriguing yet creepy display has sparked plenty of debate and questions about the future of touringand whether holograms disrespect the memory of late music legends.

Never one to miss a viral joke opportunity, the Internet has scooped up Holo-Pac and run with it, resulting in Holo-Pac memes spreading to the far corners of the web.

Trailing the success of other parody accounts such as @AngiesRightLeg and @DarthVader, the Twittersphere welcomed @HologramTupac this week, which impressively garnered more than 30,000 followers in only a few days. @HologramTupac tweets at celebrities and fans alike, often pausing to clarify that he is not a zombie,...

Will Nicki Minaj Come Back To Twitter?
Her Barbz sure hope so, but Nicki bid them 'good f---ing bye' on Sunday.

By Kara Klenk

Nicki Minaj

Photo: Dimitrios Kambouris/ WireImage

On Sunday, more than 11 million Barbz had their lifeline to Nicki Minaj abruptly severed when the femcee shut down her Twitter account.

Tensions initially escalated over Minaj's accusation that a fan site had leaked some of her tracks and culminated in the rapper's deactivation of her account. This move came as a shock to many of her fans, as Minaj was one of the most followed Twitter users in the world (she had more followers than Oprah!) and constantly filled her timeline with personalized responses to individual fans. It seems that maintaining such an open dialogue with her fans may have backfired as she formulated her last frustrated tweets including, "Like seriously, its but so much a person can take. Good f---ing bye."

While having a Twitter...

Nicki Minaj's Roman Reloaded Divides Fans
Some Barbz and Kenz have praised the album, but others are disappointed.

By Kara Klenk

Nicki Minaj

Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images

Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded, the sophomore effort from one of MTV's Hottest MCs, Nicki Minaj, dropped Tuesday (April 3), leaving critics and fans divided. Critics have almost unanimously panned it, but all maintain that Minaj is an enormous talent whose album shifted focus away from her clear strength, rapping, to make way for more generic pop and dance tunes.

The Barbz and Kenz make up one of the most fiercely loyal fanbases around, so Minaj isn't losing love from them. Still, many are torn about the album. Some have proclaimed their love for the album, calling it "beyond great" and "fabulous." @Craggleprice tweeted, "The album is amazing!! it's got Rap, Pop, Dance and Ballads! best album! Drake and Lil Wayne Collabs r amazing! it all is!" Standout tracks among...

And seeing as it's already the #1 album on iTunes, it seems that Madonna has done it again.

Most seem generally pleased with Madge's latest effort, deeming it "pop perfection." For anyone who thinks that Madonna's in danger abdicating her throne, @MDNABornQUEEN assured the Twittersphere that, "Mdna proves once again that Madonna is still the Queen of Pop." Nick Cannon’s wife Mariah Carey took to Twitter to announce his hospitalization due to kidney failure. Katy Perry

For MTV's Best of 2011, our panel of experts counted down the Artists of the Year — the people they felt really owned the past 12 months.

Fans certainly had a lot to say about the list, commenting on everything from the order to the artists who didn't make the top 10. There were a lot of comments that Adele or Gaga should have been in the top two instead of Katy Perry and Nicki Minaj, while some fans were angry that Bruno Mars and Chris Brown didn't make the cut. (One fan even said Internet sensation Rebecca Black should have made the list.)

While every fan wanted their favorite artist to be #1, it came down to Perry and Minaj vying for the top spot,...

Nicki Minaj vs. Cher

So here’s what went down: A fan told @Cher that @NickiMinaj dissed her in the song "Did It On 'em" (which came out a full year ago, way to be a topical, pot-stirrer) to which Cher casually replied, "I've seen lots of people come & go! No biggie!" (I mean, to be fair to all involved, she has – she's Cher!) This brought the #Barbz out with pink pitchforks in hand explaining the reference as a metaphor (I still don’t get it). Top 10 Sexy Halloween Costumes That Shouldn't Exist
By Kara Klenk

Halloween is a few days away, so stragglers will be picking apart the remains of costume shops or paying extra for shipping all week. Some people opt for funny (Angry Jet Blue Flight Attendant), political (Kim Jung Il), or cultural memes (keyboard cat). But sadly, a majority of the adult female population tries to go sexy. While it’s pretty easy to make a Snooki or Tinkerbell costume revealing, costume companies also push some “sexy” options that should be anything but.

Website Of The Day: Mashup Breakdown
By Kara Klenk

Anyone who’s ever listened to a fast-paced, genre-hopping song by musician Girl Talk has wondered what songs are being used and when. Is that from the song I think it’s from? Wired magazine went as far as to create a chart with a beat-by-beat breakdown that revealed the amazing 35 tracks that Girl Talk chopped up, layered and mixed to create a single song from Feed The Animals (2008). Two years later, Benjamin Rahn created Mashup Breakdown, a way to listen to the tracks while seeing what songs make it up.

MTV News talked to Rahn and he said that when he saw the Wired piece, “I remember thinking it was really cool, but it was hard for me to line up what was going on in that image with what I was really hearing. I thought it would be great if there was an animated version of this.

Lady Gaga at the 2011 VMAs

Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images

Which makes perfect sense when we're talking about a show in which Selena Gomez interviewed Justin Bieber, Britney and Gaga almost made out, and, oh yeah, Beyoncé announced her pregnancy!

Female artists definitely ruled Twitter this year. Bey's baby news made her the most tweeted-about celeb overall, with the first twitpic of her touching her pregnant stomach on the red carpet passing 600,000 views in six hours. Lady Gaga Vma Wish List: Balloons, Bones And More
Little Monsters make predictions (and suggestions) for Gaga's fashion and opening performance come Sunday.

By Kara Klenk, with additional reporting by Jim Cantiello

Lady Gaga

When Lady Gaga was asked about plans for her opening performance at Sunday's 2011 Video Music Awards, she told MTV News, "I'm pretty good at knowing what my fans want me to do."

Mother Monster is certainly in tune with the needs of her Little Monsters, and if anyone could guess what the unpredictable pop star has planned on Sunday, it's them.

Some fans predict that her 2011 performance will be an extension of 2009's blood-soaked "Paparazzi" number. One of Gaga's Twitter followers wrote, "I reckon it's gonna be quite eery + scary, and full of blood!" Many thought it would mimic her Vma promos, which had a jazzy style and Gaga playing piano.

Others thought she would tap into themes from her "Yoü and I" video,...

With outrageous moments, surprise performances and meat-clad pop stars, the Video Music Awards undoubtedly leave many Twitterers nursing thumb cramps on Monday morning. As the tweeting community continues to grow exponentially each year, the VMAs drive even more activity and trends. Last year, the second in which we used the Vma Twitter Tracker, there were approximately 2.3 million Vma-related tweets sent during the East and West Coast broadcasts.

Looking back at what people were the big trends that night provides a pretty accurate picture of the big show's onstage spectacles. On average, Lady Gaga was the subject of 9,200 tweets per minute (which, for Gaga, was probably a barely noticeable bump). Her meat-purse holder, Cher, was also popular that...
