This Top-Charting Thriller on Hulu Reveals the Dark Trenches of Polite Society
Image
There’s no shortage of films depicting bleak, dystopian futures right now. Even those meant to make light of matters at hand, like M3GAN 2.0, are that much grimmer in their message of just giving in to the cold, dead eyes of AI. There was a time when these types of films felt like distant warnings, predictions that could still be prevented. These days, most feel like they’re right around the corner, and that has made this particular genre more unnerving than ever.

While it may seem masochistic to some to indulge in the dreariness, there’s a therapeutic relief in the way these types of films allow us to deal with issues head-on and process them in a safe space. Perhaps that’s why we always see a spike in the popularity of certain movies during moments of distress (such as Steven Soderbergh’s Contagion being brought back...

The Assessment (2024) Movie Ending Explained & Themes Analyzed: Did Mia Uncover the Truth—Or Just Virginia’s Own Despair?
Image
Fluer Fortuné’s The Assessment (2024) serves as a compelling companion piece to Alfonso Cuarón’s Children of Men, with both films set in a near-future world where childbirth has become a rarity. Yet, amid this crisis, their characters cling to the fragile hope of new life. While Cuarón’s vision is rooted in a gritty, war-torn landscape populated by working-class struggles, Fortuné’s film shifts the lens to a more insular perspective—that of a privileged couple living in a secluded, state-sanctioned sanctuary.

Despite the serene setting, The Assessment delivers a sharp critique of societal control, personal autonomy, and the quiet tyranny of privilege. It unfolds as a thoughtful meditation on what it truly means to become a parent in a world governed by surveillance and sterile order. The film isn’t afraid to venture into philosophical territory, raising questions that linger long after the credits roll.

Ultimately, the story...

The Assessment Movie Ending Gets Explained by Director, Who Describes Final Decisions as 'Very Important'
Image
The Assessment movie ending has left audiences slack-jawed as its main characters make some pretty consequential decisions, which director Fleur Fortuné has described as "very important." The 2024 sci-fi thriller stars Elizabeth Olsen (who fans may know as Marvel Studios' Scarlet Witch) and Himesh Patel (Station Eleven) as prospective parents Mia and Aaryan living in a near future where natural childbirth is no longer legal thanks to increasing overpopulation, environmental deterioration, and a lack of resources.

Instead of anyone being able to have kids whenever they want, society has implemented an assessment process that every couple must undergo. An assessor must come live with them to determine whether they are deemed worthy of becoming parents. In the case of Mia and Aaryan, they are assigned Virginia (played by former Tomb Raider actor Alicia Vikander). While Virginia's seven-day visit begins fairly innocuously, things quickly devolve into chaos, leading to The Assessment's gripping ending.

Elizabeth Olsen's Sci-Fi Thriller With 83% On Rotten Tomatoes Shoots Up Streaming Charts After Debut
Image
Elizabeth Olsen may not boast Oscar nominations or any Emmy wins, but she is one of the better actors of her generation. Her career has spanned both major mainstream content and smaller movies and TV shows.

On the more mainstream side of things, she is part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), where she plays Scarlet Witch in WandaVision, Avengers: Age of Ultron, and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. This is by far her best-known role to most people.

On the other hand, she is also a skilled actor in award-winning, high-caliber works such as the HBO TV miniseries Love & Death. She also played a main character in the notable 2011 indie film Martha Marcy May Marlene, and a main role in Wind River.

Now, Olsen is working on building up her career both in and outside the MCU. Earlier this year, she was in a sci-fi film...

‘Dear Ms.: A Revolution in Print’ Trailer: Gloria Steinem Revisits Her Magazine Legacy
Image
Gloria Steinem’s legacy extends far beyond her literary achievements, but her beloved magazine Ms. is what really started a movement. The story of Ms. has been fictionalized onscreen in “Mrs. America,” “Minx,” and “Good Girls Revolt,” and even had a real-life syndicated spinoff “Woman Alive!” that started in 1974. The reach of Ms. is almost unfathomable — and its imprint (pun intended) on the sociocultural landscape is still being felt today.

“Dear Ms.: A Revolution in Print” revisits the iconic publication through the lens of three directors: Salima Koroma, Alice Gu, and Cecilia Aldarondo. In the film, the trio each examine a different Ms. cover story to honor the legacy of the magazine.

Ms. launched in 1972 and arguably revolutionized the feminist movement at the time. As the official synopsis for the documentary states, the magazine was suddenly “bringing radical ideas to kitchen tables across the country and sparking provocative conversations...

Image
Exclusive: It’s been almost a decade since Paul Dano and Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert blew away Sundance Film Festival attendees with Swiss Army Man, but now the trio now looks ready to reunite on Dano’s next director outing. Sources tell Deadline that Dano is set to write and in talks to direct a new untitled comedy for Universal Pictures, with Kwan, Scheinert and their partner Jonathan Wang producing through their Playgrounds banner. Plot details are being kept under wraps other then it being a high-concept, original comedy. The Daniels have a first-look deal at the studio and, while they are still deep in development on a follow-up to their Oscar Best Picture winner Everything Everywhere All at Once, this film would mark one of the first major projects they are solely producing under the deal. 10 Killer Movie Robots That Are More Terrifying Than M3GAN
Image
"M3GAN" surprised audiences in 2022 with its creepy tale about an overprotective robot named M3GAN (body performed by Amie Donald and voice provided by Jenna Davis) who follows her pre-coded directives a little too closely. Packed with a few gnarly kills, clever humor, and one skin-crawling dance sequence, this Gerard Johnstone-directed production grossed a whopping $181 million at the worldwide box office against a $12 million budget.

You know what that means, right? Sequels and spinoffs are coming starting this year, though they already face an uphill battle at the box office. Do we need a "M3GAN" universe? Probably not, but there's no question this pint-sized doll captured the interest of moviegoers, no doubt already reeling from the early onset of artificial intelligence -- stay calm, we're still in the early stages of cats diving into pools.

But where does M3GAN rank in the pantheon of terrifying movie robots? She's definitely scary,...

Karlovy Vary One of Many Czech Festivals Paying Tribute to a Nation’s Rich Cinematic Heritage
Image
A scenic spa town tucked within the forested hills of western Bohemia, Karlovy Vary is among the most picturesque settings you could choose for a film festival — a fact that surely wasn’t lost on organizers when they hosted the fest’s first edition more than 70 years ago.

Today, as the Czech town prepares to hold its 59th edition, running July 4 – 12, the Karlovy Vary Intl. Film Festival has grown into the most prestigious festival in Central and Eastern Europe. It’s an event that combines the glamour of Hollywood with the youthful exuberance of the countless young cinephiles who flock from across Europe every summer to pitch tents, pack the festival’s cinemas and party deep into the night.

Artistic director Karel Och, who has been with the festival since the turn of the century, credits the “passion and dedication” of the Karlovy Vary team with creating its signature vibe.

Quentin Tarantino Calls Out this Big Budget Netflix Thriller: “What the f–k is going on here?”
Image
Quentin Tarantino is lucky that he’s a creative genius because his mouth gets him in trouble on the regular. Tarantino is prone to blurting out controversial hot takes, some for which he has to walk back and apologize. Case in point: When he sat for a T Magazine interview (with Bret Easton Ellis conducting), the Pulp Fiction director slammed Selma. Tarantino quipped that the Oscar-winning film “deserved an Emmy.”

Tarantino later offered a half-apology. He elaborated that he hadn’t actually seen the film but thought it looked like a T.V. movie. In that very same interview with T Magazine, Tarantino also bashed Guy Ritchie’s, The Man from U.N.C.L.E. Tarantino started out sharing what he liked about the former Mr. Madonna Louise Veronica Ciccone’s film and quickly pivoted to what didn’t work for him.

His hot take goes like this: “The...

Tomb Raider | Hang on, the Amazon series may yet be alive
Image
Amazon looked to have pulled the plug on a Tomb Raider TV series – but the adventures of Lara Croft may now be back on.

It seems that the rumours regarding the demise of Amazon’s Tomb Raider series may have been premature. Back in April, the British tabloids put out a story suggesting that the project was dead – and there was some degree of supporting evidence to lend credence to that story.

Jennifer Salke – the head of Amazon Studios – had been shepherding the project through production and was now out of a job. Puck's Matthew Belloni – a regular Hollywood source – claimed that Phoebe Waller-Bridge, the series’ showrunner, still hadn’t delivered any scripts. There was also plenty of speculation that Amazon was looking to end its pricey production deal with Waller-Bridge, given that up until this point, none of her projects have come to fruition in the way the studio had hoped for.

Wyatt Russell, David Harbour, Olga Kurylenko, Sebastian Stan, Hannah John-Kamen, Lewis Pullman, and Florence Pugh in Thunderbolts* (2025)
High-brow film awards events like The Academy Awards and the Emmys always bring Hollywood’s tastiest milkshakes to the yard. However, while I enjoy a red carpet romp as much as the next cinephile, plenty of movies and television shows I’ve enjoyed throughout the year don’t get so much as a mention when the nominations come from parties that don’t tend to share my cinematic values. That’s why we’ve got JoBlo’s Golden Schmoes and celebrations like the fifth annual Critics Choice Super Awards! Today, the nominations for this year’s ceremony are making the rounds, with titles like Marvel’s Deadpool & Wolverine, Thunderbolts*, and HBO’s The Last of Us leading the pack.

Nominations for this year’s Critics Choice Super Awards cover a spectrum of genres, including superhero cinema, high-octane action, bleak dramas, mind-bending science-fiction, cerebral war drama, comedic action, spine-tingling horror, and more!

‘Poker Face’ Baddie Eva Jade Halford Is Ready to Rise to the Top: The 12-Year-Old Star on Playing the Series’ Latest Twisted Villain
Image
Editor’s Note: The following story contains some spoilers for “Poker Face” Season 2, Episode 6.

Season 2, Episode 6 is not your typical episode of “Poker Face.” Charlie (Natasha Lyonne) has been working as lunch lady at a local elementary school, where she meets the terrifying Stephanie (Eva Jade Halford), a student whose ambition compels her to humiliate one of her peers and indirectly kill the class pet.

It’s a demanding role even on paper, and one brought to life superbly by the 12-year-old Halford (the episode premiered on her birthday), who goes toe to toe with Lyonne, Margo Martindale, and Adrienne C. Moore throughout the episode. It’s enough to shake a seasoned pro — but Halford is already on her way to being just that, having just wrapped “The Last Day” with Alicia Vikander, Victoria Pedretti, and Wagner Moura, from first-time feature director Rachel Rose. As a child, she’s used...
