With $100 million funding round, Substack promises “better tools, broader reach, and deeper support” for creators
Image
Substack has landed a nine-digit investment that will further its commitment to independent creator content. The newsletter platform has announced a $100 million Series C funding round that will be used to develop and upgrade the platform’s suite of features.

Investors at Bond and The Chernin Group led the round, which will install Bond partner Mood Rowghani on the Substack board. Other participants included Andreessen Horowitz, LeBron James’ agent Rich Paul, and Skims Co-Founder Jens Grede.

Substack launched in 2017, establishing itself as one of the first platforms to cater to the growing community of newsletter writers. In the eight years since, the company led by Co-Founders Hamish McKenzie, Chris Best, and Jairaj Sethi has built out a full complement of features, transforming Substack into a multimedia hub replete with revenue streams.

Substack Raises $100 Million in Funding from the Chernin Group, Andreessen Horowitz
Image
Substack has raised $100 million in funding as the newsletter platform continues to position itself as a place for journalists and creators to retain independence.

The funding, which is the company’s series C round, was led by investors at technology investment firm Bond and Peter Chernin’s The Chernin Group. Other participants include Vc firm Andreessen Horowitz; Rich Paul, CEO and founder of Klutch Sports Group; and Jens Grede, CEO and co-founder of Skims, the apparel company co-founded by Kim Kardashian.

The round values Substack at $1.1 billion and brings its total funding to date to about $200 million.

The funding comes as Substack has been doing outreach to journalists, as well as creators nervous about the TikTok ban. Four months ago, the platform hit more than five million paid subscriptions, up from four million in November 2024.

In announcing the funding, Substack co-founders Chris Best, Hamish McKenzie, and Jairaj Sethi, also took...

UTA Sees Two Major Departures, Undergoes Cuts
Image
It’s the time of the season for end-of-the-year budget decisionmaking around Hollywood, in a year that’s already seen cutbacks across the industry, from the C-suite to administrative roles.

United Talent Agency, the Beverly Hills-based Big 3 firm run by CEO Jeremy Zimmer, is undergoing some cuts and is parting ways with about 10 agents whose contracts were not renewed, a source says. And two high-profile departures at the agency were also announced internally recently, including the exit of the executive who had been the co-lead on UTA’s sports division.

Andrew Thau, who spent nearly two decades at the agency and co-headed UTA Sports, is leaving the company. “Andrew will be with us until the end of the year to assist in the transition and will continue to consult for UTA through part of 2025,” wrote agency president David Kramer in a memo to staff obtained by The Hollywood Reporter. That sports division,...

Adele engaged to Rich Paul with a large diamond ring
Image
The rumors surrounding Adele’s relationship with sports agent Rich Paul have been buzzing recently, especially with reports from The Sun claiming that Rich proposed to Adele in London with a four-carat diamond ring. Adele was recently seen in London, where she managed to evade paparazzi and hide her engagement ring with a golden purse. Speculation about their engagement intensified after Adele referred to Rich as her “husband” on stage, though it was reportedly an inside joke. LeBron James Gives Los Angeles Lakers A Discount On His New Contract
Image
LeBron James is taking less so his Los Angeles Lakers can do more.

The 20-time NBA All-Star reached agreement today to play on a contract below the maximum level he was eligible to sign for. The hope is the Lakers can avoid salary cap restrictions down the line, ESPN first reported.

James signed a two-year extension worth $101.35 million. He could have taken a $104 million max deal, according to the media outlet.

The Athletic reported the new contract also comes with a player option and a 15% trade kicker.

James reportedly wants the Lakers to acquire an “impact player,” according to his agent, Rich Paul of Klutch Sports. So far, that hasn’t happened, as the team swung and missed in its efforts to entice Klay Thompson or DeMar DeRozan in free agency.

Thompson’s new home is now with the Mavericks, and ESPN reported Saturday night that DeRozan is going to the Kings on a three-year,...

Ex-Klutch agent Mark Termini, in a lawsuit filed on Tuesday in Ohio district court, accuses Paul of breach of contract for failing to pay him more than $4.9 million on fees for deals he says he negotiated, including LeBron James’ $154 million 2018 contract that saw the star sign with the Los Angeles Lakers.

In 2019, United Talent Agency bought a majority interest in Klutch, with the agency continuing to operate under its own brand and expanding into representation of athletes in other sports. Paul was named head of UTA Sports as part of the deal. The agency’s clients include LeBron James, Anthony Davis and DeAndre Hopkins.

According to the complaint, Termini was asked in 2012 to oversee contract negotiations for Klutch,...

After Demolishing Sylvester Stallone’s $58 Million Home, Adele Spends Millions More To Build A New Mega-Mansion But Decided To Keep His Rocky Statue
Image
Pop singer Adele demolished and reconstructed her $58 million Beverly Hills mega-mansion, which she bought from Rocky star Sylvester Stallone in 2022. However, the singer kept one iconic feature – Stallone’s swimming pool statue of his famous boxing character Rocky.

The 18,587-square-foot home has undergone an extensive remodel two years after the Grammy-winning singer bought it with her husband, sports agent Rich Paul. Adele, who has not yet moved into the estate, is paying millions for significant renovations.

One prominent remnant of Stallone’s ownership is the outdoor swimming pool area featuring his iconic, life-sized sculpted statue of Rocky Balboa, the character from his popular film franchise. Last year, Stallone told the Wall Street Journal he had planned to take the statue, but Adele “really wanted” to keep it.

When Adele acquired the home, it already had an enormous footprint with eight bedrooms and 12 bathrooms. However, the singer has expanded it further...

Yara Shahidi Reflects on Closing Out ‘Grown-ish’
Image
Taking cues from The Cosby Show’s iconic spinoff A Different World but updated for some 30 years later, Grown-ish, the Black-ish spawn premiered on Freeform in January 2018 by following Yara Shahidi’s Zoey Johnson, Dre (Anthony Anderson) and Bow’s (Tracee Ellis Ross) firstborn, to college. Similar to its predecessor, Grown-ish tackled many controversial topics, including university investment in the prison system, drug use, pre-nil exploitation of college athletes, sex, the value of college and more, but did so with a fresh voice and perspective.

Zoey’s college world included her competing love interests — woke Black campus activist Aaron (Trevor Jackson) and ultimate hipster Luca (Luka Sabbat) — as well as Latina Republican Ana (Francia Raìsa), Jewish rebel Nomi (Emily Arlook), first-generation Indian American and all-around hustler Vivek (Jordan Buhat), Olympic-bound South Los Angeles track stars Jazz and Sky (sisters Chloe and Halle Bailey, who perform the show’s theme song) and later,...

Inside Vanity Fair’s Oscar Party With LeBron James, Billie Eilish and Steven Spielberg
Image
On Oscar night, details matter. Who are you wearing? What are you nominated for? Who won? Just don’t expect everyone to know the answers.

“What movie won?” Rick Hilton asked as he and wife Kathy Hilton assumed position at the end of a glamorous queue to get into Vanity Fair’s 30th anniversary Oscar party in Beverly Hills on Sunday after 10 p.m. They asked their son, Kathy says, but no clue. Fortunately, a gentleman standing directly in front of the couple had the answer. “It was Oppenheimer,” he said, not mentioning the awkwardness of Al Pacino’s best picture reveal. Some details can be saved for Monday morning. Plus, there are more rapid-fire questions to field.

What movie is that? Is it based on a true story? Who was the emcee?

“Oh, Jimmy Kimmel. I like him,” Rick said, smiling, in a totally relatable moment because who doesn’t love Jimmy Kimmel?...

Jimmy Iovine and Dr. Dre Held an Art Auction on a Private Roller Rink
Image
Los Angeles’ Frieze week got off to a hot start in a fairly chill environment: a roller rink.

“I’m so glad Jimmy finally found a place to entertain in!” cracked James Corden, regarding the estate of super-producer/entrepreneur Jimmy Iovine. The former Late Late Show host played emcee to a crowd that included a rare fusion of music and art royalty: Ed Ruscha, Brian Grazer, Katie Couric, Joel Madden, Benny Blanco, Bob Geldof and sports agent Rich Paul, aka Adele’s partner.

All convened at the sprawling Bel Air manse of Iovine for an art auction, co-hosted by Dr. Dre, to raise funds for a revolutionary education program. In 2013, Iovine and Dre (born Andre Young) opened the USC Jimmy Iovine and Andre Young Academy, a novel university program fusing art, tech and business. In 2022, the duo went a step further, opening their own magnet high school in Leimert Park: the Iovine and Young Center.

Adele on Her Dream Hollywood Gig, Her Big Emotions and Volunteering at Her Son’s School: “The Kids Don’t Give a Flying F*** Who I Am”
Image
Even on her day off, Adele, the regular person, can’t escape Adele, the superstar singer.

It’s Monday, and she rolls into one of her favorite Beverly Hills restaurants for lunch, makeup-free with her hair pulled back. She’s in an oversized, comfy, long black coat, and the only real giveaway are her long sharp black nails. And, of course, her screeching laugh.

But then her song, the sweeping ballad “One and Only,” from her 21 era, comes on.

She laughs. “Every time Rich travels,” she says of her partner, sports superagent Rich Paul, with whom she lives in Beverly Hills, “the airplanes always play my music, and we can’t work out if it’s because they know that we are together, or if it’s just what they do.”

Later, the power pop ballad “Set Fire to the Rain,” plays in the background.

“You know what it is?...
