Starz announced a Winter debut for its epic gladiator drama, Spartacus: House of Ashur, with a fiery new teaser trailer released during a panel today at San Diego Comic-Con. The action-packed teaser primed fans for the much-anticipated next chapter in the Spartacus franchise, led by executive producer and showrunner Steven S. DeKnight (Daredevil).

Joining DeKnight on the San Diego Comic-Con panel was the show’s cast, including Nick E. Tarabay (Spartacus), Tenika Davis (Jupiter’s Legacy), Graham McTavish (The Witcher), Jamaica Vaughan (Home and Away), Jordi Webber (Choose Love), and Jaime Slater (Jupiter’s Legacy), with Liam McIntyre, who played the role of “Spartacus” in previous chapters, moderating.

DeKnight announced the new series’ winter premiere slot on stage with the cast of “House of Ashur,” including Nick E. At this point in history, Gaius Julius Caesar is not yet the powerful, all-conquering Roman general who became dictator of Rome. Starz's upcoming Spartacus: House of Ashur series will bring back some familiar faces, but there's one new actor who will actually portray a returning character.

Spartacus has consistently maintained a loyal cult following over the past 15 years. The series began in 2010 and ran three seasons with a six-episode prequel series, Gods of the Arena. It was based on the historical character of the slave-turned-gladiator who breaks free and organizes a rebellion against Rome.

Among the various characters was Ashur (Nick E. Tarabay), a former slave who, following an injury, earned his freedom. A rather slimy conniver always ready to sell out anyone to save his own skin, Ashur seemingly met his end in season 2. This new series imagines that Ashur survived, aided the Romans in putting down Spartacus' rebellion, and was rewarded with his own gladiator house.

He said, “I think I needed a decade to recuperate from the original experience, which was wonderful, but just grueling and emotionally gut wrenching.” The death of Andy Whitfield, the first actor to play Spartacus, made it even harder.

After the tough experience of making the first series, and the heartbreaking loss of Andy Whitfield, who played Spartacus and died from cancer, DeKnight needed time to recover. On Wednesday, January 15, Starz released the first-look teaser trailer for “Spartacus: House of Ashur,” a sequel to its original three-season “Spartacus” series, which started in 2010 with “Spartacus: Blood and Sand,” continued with “Spartacus: Vengeance,” and concluded in 2013 with “Spartacus: War of the Damned.” Between “Blood and Sand” and “Vengeance,” Starz made a six-episode miniseries “Spartacus: Gods of the Arena.”

(Spartacus, by the way, is a real historical figure. He was a Thracian gladiator and one of the escaped slaves who led an uprising against the Roman Republic in the early first century BC. Andy Whitfield played Spartacus for the first season and provided a brief voiceover for its prequel. At the time, he was battling stage IV non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Whitfield died in 2011; Liam McIntyre took over the role in Seasons 2 and 3. Kirk Douglas famously played Spartacus in Stanley Kubrick’s 1960 film.)

Starbase 80 had previously only been mentioned in hushed tones among the Cerritos' crew, as it is said to be cursed. At the very least, it's the worst place to work in all of Starfleet, even worse than the Cerritos.

When the crew arrives, they find the "Star Trek" equivalent of a long-ignored truck stop. Starbase 80's crew members wear uniforms that are two centuries out of date, while the station's diplomatic liaison, Cassia Knox (Nicole Byer), reveals that its technology hasn't been updated since the 2260s. That, Trekkies might instantly recognize, was the decade the original "Star Trek" series took place.

Move over, Xena! Deadline reports that Lucy Lawless is set to return to her other iconic role, that of Lucretia in the upcoming Spartacus: House of Ashur series.

Sadly, Lawless’ return won’t be as a series regular, but as a guest-starring role in the premiere. The report states that her appearance “will be instrumental in setting up the ‘what if’ alternate timeline.” In a statement on X, creator Steven DeKnight said, “The gods bless the House of Ashur! Production on Spartacus: House of Ashur is currently underway in New Zealand, and the rest of the main cast for the upcoming Starz series has been revealed.

The series’ main cast will include Graham McTavish (The Witcher), Tenika Davis (Jupiter’s Legacy), Jamaica Vaughan (Home and Away), Ivana Baquero (Pan’s Labyrinth), Jordi Webber (Choose Love), Claudia Black (Farscape), India Shaw-Smith (The Pines Still Whisper), and Leigh Gill (Joker). Of course, Nick Tarabay will be reprising the role of Ashur, a former gladiator who used his cunning to serve the house of Batiatus and later the Romans in the original series.

The sequel series to Spartacus has entered production in New Zealand this week, and Starz announced it by revealing the main cast of the upcoming series. The news of actor Chance Perdomo's death came as a horrible shock when it was first reported several weeks ago. Perdomo was just 27 years old when he was killed in a motorcycle crash. A rising star thanks to his standout performances in "The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina" and "The Boys" spinoff "Gen V," Perdomo was reportedly returning to Toronto for the first "Gen V" season 2 table read when the accident occurred. Production was immediately put on hold to give the cast and creative team time to process the tragedy and decide how best to handle it within the show.

Now, the producers of "Gen V" have released a statement on social media confirming that Perdomo's character, Andre Anderson, will not be recast in season 2:

The games are set in a medieval-style fantasy world where players are tasked with using heroes to recover the central, and much-coveted item, the Golden Axe.

The series will be co-created by Mike McMahan and Joe Chandler – the former being the creator of the hugely well-received Star Trek: Lower Decks.

According to Variety, which broke the story, the voice cast will include Liam McIntyre as the voice of Conan-like warrior Ax Battler, Lisa Gilroy as Tyris Flare and Matthew Rhys as the diminutive, axe-wielding Gilius Thunderhead.

Comedy Central has ordered 10 episodes. The official description of the series states the show “follows veteran warriors Ax Battler (McIntyre), Tyris Flare (Gilroy), and Gilius Thunderhead (Rhys) as they once again battle to save Yuria from the evil giant Death Adder who just won’t seem to stay dead. Fortunately, this time they have the inexperienced and underprepared Hampton Squib (Pudi) on their side.”
