Where To Watch Nickel Boys: Showtimes & Streaming Status
Image
The upcoming historical drama Nickel Boys is already receiving Oscars buzz following a successful premiere at the Telluride Film Festival in August and a Golden Globe nomination, leading to audience interest in watching the film once it arrives in theaters. Nickel Boys follows Elwood Curtis, played by Ethan Herisse, and Turner, played by Brandon Wilson, as they attempt to survive through their time at an abusive boys' school called Nickel Academy, and the film also features a great supporting cast with some recognizable faces.

Nickel Boys is based on the novel The Nickel Boys by Colson Whitehead, which won the 2020 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, already pointing the movie toward a positive reception. Furthermore, the book and movie did have real-life inspiration, making its meaning even deeper. The movie was filmed in 2022 in Louisiana, and, interestingly, Nickel Boys was shot from a first-person perspective. Luckily for curious audiences, the Amazon MGM...

Nickel Boys Review: Clearly One Of 2024’s Strongest Movies, And Yet…
Image
It's worth starting this review by saying I have read the Colson Whitehead novel Nickel Boys is based on, and very recently. In fact, it was the rapturous festival reactions to the film, many of which emphasized it as an achievement of adaptation, that inspired me to seek out the book ahead of time. I'm glad I did – it's a wonderful book. Having read it, however, did shape my response to this movie.

Set in Jim Crow-era Florida, two Black teens, Elwood Curtis and Turner, endure the brutal conditions of Nickel Academy, a reformatory for boys. While Turner teaches survival through cynicism, Elwood clings to his belief in justice, despite the horrors around them. Their friendship offers a glimmer of hope amidst a backdrop of systemic racism and violence.

'Nickel Boys' Review | Empathy Through the Power of Cinema
Image
Nickel Boys isn't just a powerful movie about important and relevant themes. It's also an audacious burst of brilliance that uses some of cinema's unique and immersive capabilities to create a lasting experience. This is a movie everyone needs to see. The movie is adapted from the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Colson Whitehead, which itself is based on the true stories of the Dozier School in Florida, known for 111 years of abusing and murdering its students.

However, before any of that becomes part of the story unfolding on the screen, first-time narrative feature director RaMell Ross (Oscar-nominated for his documentary work) has already gripped audiences with lyrical and evocative filmmaking. From the moment the movie begins, the audience embodies the first-person perspective of a young Black boy living in the Jim Crow South. All exposition is handled as we experience the world around him. The cinematography and sound design are main characters from the rip,...

2015 Tribeca Film Festival: ‘Maggie’
With zombie movies and shows being all the rage nowadays, the “zombie rules” become a bit overwhelming, to say the least. Do the humans turn immediately or after a while? Are they fast or slow? Do they still function as normal human beings, just slower, or do they have superhuman strength and rational? Do they enjoy Queen or are they a huge Deliverance fan? The list goes on and on, and I’m sure there’s more you can add.

Well Maggie is a different kind of story. It’s not a survival story like most zombie films, and it’s not a rebuilding and restructuring story like others. Maggie is more about the moment, take a combination of Amy’s death from The Walking Dead and R turning human. It’s essentially an hour and half of dying, in a rather disheartening setting between shockingly emotional acting from Arnold Schwarzenegger and Abigail Breslin.

Tiff 2014: Arnold Schwarzenegger Comforts Zombie Daughter in First Maggie Stills; World Premiere Announced
The idea of Arnold Schwarzenegger starring in a zombie film is one that seems like mere fan fiction as it's pretty much too good to be true. But the upcoming film Maggie is proof that sometimes...

...things that are too good to be true are actually true.

In the Henry Hobson-directed zombie flick, Arnold plays the father of a 16-year-old girl (Abigail Breslin) who is infected with the zombie virus, staying by her side as she transforms from human being to flesh-eating monster.

Yes, Arnold Schwarzenegger as a zombie's dad. We're not making this up, and we're so glad that we're not.

It was announced today that Maggie will be having its world premiere next month as part of the Toronto International Film Festival's 2014 lineup. The festival runs September 4th through the 14th, and Maggie will be one of many special presentations.

In the meantime check out a handful of stills from the film,...

Arnold Schwarzenegger Goes Back To The Farm In First Maggie Image
Zombies! They’re all the rage right now, though I guess they never really went out of style. But you know who has yet to make a foray into the zombie subgenre? Do you know who has been missing? The Governator himself, Arnold Schwarzenegger. Not to worry! His upcoming film Maggie is going to change all that.

That’s right, Arnold will be taking on the undead in the form of Abigail Breslin. The actress plays a small-town teenager who contracts a virus that turns her into a flesh-eating creature, while Arnold is all set to play her farmer father who tries to help his daughter. Aw, that actually sounds really sweet.

Maggie is actually quite a small film, with Breslin and Schwarzenegger the biggest names in a cast that includes newcomer Aiden Flowers, Rachel Whitman Groves (she’s also in Spike Lee’s Oldboy), and TV actress Amy Brassette.
