London-based NBCUniversal International Studios has announced that Amazon Studios has greenlit a straight-to-series order of Hanna.

David Farr, who co-wrote the Focus Features 2011 film of the same name, and most recently adapted John Le Carre’s The Night Manager for BBC and AMC, is set to write the adaptation.

Hanna the TV series is described as equal parts a high-concept thriller and coming-of-age drama which follows the journey of an extraordinary young girl as she evades the relentless pursuit of an off-book CIA agent and tries to unearth the truth behind who she is.

Marty Adelstein and Becky Clements will serve as executive producers alongside Scott Nemes, and JoAnn Alfano for NBCUniversal International Studios. Scott Herbst and Tom Coan will serve as co-executive producers.

It’s been a kaleidoscopic and crazy week, stuffed with meetings and showcases, holiday receptions, and random conversations across what I like to call the Golden Triangle, the Westside Los Angeles neighborhoods and suburbs where startups and tech giants, social-media influencers, and new kinds of entertainment companies are haphazardly creating a New Hollywood, and a new relationship between creators and fans.

At the same time, I’m seeing more of Old Hollywood – if not all of it – starting to figure out how to live with the new stars, platforms, and business models. It’s been a messy transformation, but it’s been damned fun to watch.

For instance, I met with my friends at RelishMix, which advises networks and studios about the social-media conversation around their films and TV shows. Too often, RelishMix will find the majority of the cast on a film is “not socially active,” with little or no social-media presence.

HBO’s series won 12 awards on the night, taking its total haul to 38; Susanne Bier scoops directing award.

Game Of Thrones broke a record set by Frasier 12 years ago to scoop the highest number of Emmys won by a fictional series.

The HBO fantasy drama was nominated for 24 awards and picked up 12, beating House Of Cards, Downton Abbey and Homeland to outstanding drama series for the second year running.

The night brought its total haul to 38, beating Frasier’s Emmys record of 37.

It was a strong night for HBO across the board with comedy Veep winning outstanding comedy series and Julia Louis-Dreyfus picking up best lead actress.

Elsewhere, Danish director Susanne Bier picked up a directing award for the BBC’s adaption of John Le Carre’s spy novel The Night Manager.

It took Oscar-winning filmmaker Susanne Bier to finally bring John Le Carre’s espionage thriller to life, and boy, did she ever. The miniseries was striking in every way, from the global locales and picturesque hotels to the way characters were displayed upon such backdrops. More than just eye candy, Tom Hiddleston as soldier-turned-spy Jonathan Pine was a man with a mission, quietly stoic in the face of his nemesis Richard Roper, played with dangerous glee by Hugh Laurie. Olivia Colman brought the heart, Elizabeth Debicki the heartache and Tom Hollander a sense of impotent rage. The storytelling was large in scale yet intimate in how it played out, and it’s no wonder that viewers are hoping for more, even though Le Carre never wrote a sequel.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has often been criticised for its weak villains. A troubling hush seems to follow Anton Corbijn’s fourth and least enthusiastically received Life, a snapshot on the short but intensely felt celebrity of actor James Dean revolving around a famed photo shoot for the titular magazine administered by Dennis Stock. Considering the film stars Dane DeHaan and Robert Pattinson in the lead roles, the lukewarm reception of the film seems surprising, beginning with a muted response at the premiere at the 2015 Berlin International Film Festival, where it played as a Special Gala Screening. Based on the film’s marketing and demure DVD release, one would be surprised to note Us distributor Cinedigm collected a titch over one million in box office following a limited theatrical and VOD release in December of 2015.

Author John Le Carre provided the basis for the exceptionally cast Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy a few years ago, and that trend is continuing with upcoming adaptations of his work. The Night Manager, which stars Tom Hiddleston and Hugh Laurie, looks fantastic, but this new trailer for Our Kind of Traitor looks just as good (if not better), and it features a cast that includes Ewan McGregor, Naomie Harris, Damian Lewis, Stellan Skarsgard, and Sherlock's Mark Gatiss.

McGregor plays a professor who gets caught in a web of international espionage, and it looks like a terrific little thriller that will scratch the itch of anyone yearning for an adult spy drama. The movie has a May 6th release date in the U.K., but Lionsgate hasn't set a U.S. release date yet. We'll keep you posted.

Six series from Denmark, Britain, Israel, Australia and the Us populate the line-up.

The six titles that will be shown in the 2016 Berlinale Special Series, the television offshoot of the Berlin Film Festival’s (Feb 11-21) Specials programme, have been revealed.

Amongst the line-up is Susanne Bier’s adaptation of John Le Carre’s spy thriller The Night Manager [pictured], which stars Hugh Laurie, Tom Hiddleston, Olivia Colman, Elizabeth Debicki and Tom Hollander and will be broadcast by the BBC in the UK and AMC in the USA.

The first in a book series about Detective Martin Beck, the story begins with a young woman's body being dredged from Sweden's Lake Vattern. As part of its Television Critics Association Press Tour, AMC has announced premiere dates for several of its major new seasons and series.

"Fear the Walking Dead" will kick off its second season of fifteen episodes in two parts, beginning with the first of seven episodes on Sunday, April 10th. The remaining eight episodes will air later in 2016 and all episodes will be immediately followed by the talk show "Talking Dead".

This morning's "Better Call Saul" panel isn't the first time Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould have come to press tour to discuss the "Breaking Bad" prequel, but their panel back at summer tour was incredibly light on details and didn't feature any actors. So this session — featuring Gilligan, Gould, "Breaking Bad" alums Bob Odenkirk and Jonathan Banks, plus fellow "Saul" castmembers Michael McKean, Rhea Seehorn, Patrick Fabian and Michael Mando — should be much livelier, and not just because critics have now seen the first two "Saul" episodes(*). Here lies an intriguing story that calls to mind John Le Carre at his murky best, yet what we are given is the self justification and propaganda of a trio of ideologues: Mosab Hassan Yousef, his handler Gonen Ben-Itzhak (a man who was fired from the Shin Bet years ago for lying and financial mismanagement, a topic conveniently not alluded to in the film) and lastly the Israeli filmmaker Nadav Schirman.

The story follows Jonathan Pine, a British soldier turned luxurious hotel night auditor. Pine crosses paths with a French-Arab woman named Sophie with ties to Richard Onslow Roper, an English black marketer who specializes in weapons.

The woman provides Pine with incriminating documents, which he forwards to a friend in British intelligence. After Sophie winds up dead, Pine works with intelligence operatives and goes undercover as part of a sting against Roper.

The BBC and Ink Factory are co-producing the project which David Farr ("Hanna," "Spooks") is penning the adaptation of, with offers for a straight-to-series pickup from multiple U.S. networks reportedly out.

Exclusive: British Egyptian actor Khalid Abdalla talks new film venue in Egypt.

British Egyptian actor Khalid Abdalla (The Kite Runner, United 93), in Toronto with the premiere screenings of Danis Tanovic’s Tigers and Tala Hadid’s The Narrow Frame of Midnight, is one of the driving forces behind a new cinematheque in Cairo.

‘Cimateque’ [Cima being the Egyptian slang for cinema], currently under construction, will include an 80- seater cinema, 8 and 16mm labs, library, digital archive, DVD library and cafeteria. The hub will host screenings, workshops and events throughout the year.

“Filmmaking courses and scriptwriting programmes have already taken place,” Abdalla explained to Screen. “This will be a base from which to host activities in Cairo and beyond”.

“There’s a lot of film that’s very difficult to access in Egypt,” he continued. “The country has an extraordinary film history but there are few channels for alternative filmmaking, especially for the new wave of films emerging in the region.”

The stakes are surprisingly low in Anton Corbijn's latest effort A Most Wanted Man; a skewed take of the war on terror and the complexities of institutions and stateless beings. The film, set in the wintry German city of Hamburg, purposely keeps it low key, slowly reaching its clinical conclusion in just over two hours with barely an eyebrow raised. The film shoots for realism, achieving it ten-fold; this is, after all, a John Le Carre adaptation. Boorish sector administration and hushed conversations can only carry a film so far, however, and the results of this muted screenplay ensure a safely disappointing ride.The late Philip Seymour Hoffman is on-point as Gunther, a troubled anti-terrorist agent who runs a small group of dull spies comprised of actors...

This Friday should have been a cause for celebration: the release of "A Most Wanted Man," an adaptation of John Le Carre's novel by one of our favorite working filmmakers, Anton Corbijn ("Control," "The American"), and starring one of our finest working actors, Philip Seymour Hoffman. Instead, it's a bittersweet occasion: as we all know, Hoffman heartbreakingly passed away in February, only a few weeks after the film premiered at Sundance (as well as "God's Pocket," which was released a few months back). It was the last film that Hoffman saw to completion: he was in production on what will turn out to be his very final pictures, the two-part finale to "The Hunger Games" series, when he passed. As we arrive at the end of July with just one month to go in the summer, this weekend is going to be one more test of whether starpower makes a difference when it comes to box office hits as we have two action movies featuring top stars as well as a smaller box office comedy starring two Oscar-winning actors who have never appeared in a movie together, although both of them may be considered past their prime.

Before we get to that, Scarlett Johansson stars as the title character in French action director Luc Besson's sci-fi action thriller Lucy (Universal), which co-stars Morgan Freeman in his third movie of the year.

This week's "Chosen One" is Anton Corbijn's adaptation of John Le Carée's post-humous spy thriller A Most Wanted Man (Lionsgate/Roadside Attractions), starring the late Philip Seymour Hoffman, Willem Dafoe and Robin Wright.

Next week, one of just two more performances from the late Philip Seymour Hoffman arrives in theaters in Anton Corbijn's quiet, stirring spy thriller A Most Wanted Man. We've already seen the great trailer (I saw the film at Sundance and loved it), but now we get a look behind the scenes, where we get to enjoy what little unseen footage we have of Hoffman still alive and making great movies. It's truly tragic to think that audiences only have two more Philip Seymour Hoffman performances to look forward to following the upsetting death of the actor earlier this year. He'll return as Plutarch Heavensbee in The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part I this fall, but next month everyone should go see A Most Wanted Man.
