‘Law & Order: Svu’ Will Bring Back Octavio Pisano For Season Opener
Image
Octavio Pisano is not gone just yet from Law & Order: Svu: Deadline has learned that he will return for the season opener this fall.

In May, it was revealed that Pisano and Juliana Aidén Martinez would not be returning to NBC‘s Svu as series regulars in the 27th season. Martinez joined the cast last season as Detective Kate Silva, while Pisano was added in Season 23 as undercover detective Joe Velasco.

It was unclear whether the decision was made for creative or financial reasons — or both. There was a pattern of budget reductions across multiple NBC shows, impacting cast, episodes, and other areas ahead of NBC’s upfronts in May.

NBC has yet to reveal its fall premiere dates.

Earlier this month, Deadline broke the news that Martinez closed a deal to join CBS’ FBI for its upcoming eighth season. It hails from Wolf Entertainment and Universal Television.

Law & Order: Svu Star Gets a Promotion for Season 27
Image
Law & Order: Special Victims Unit is one of NBC's longest-running dramas, as it premiered in 1999 and features more than 500 episodes. The police procedural will return with Season 27 this fall.

Per Deadline, a star from the drama series will return with a promotion. Aimé Donna Kelly, who plays Renee Curry, has just been promoted to series regular. The character was introduced in Season 22, and she was initially the captain of the Internal Affairs Bureau, before becoming a Captain for the NYPD Manhattan Special Victims Unit thanks to Mariska Hargitay's Captain Benson.

Over the past five seasons, Kelly's Curry appeared in 29 episodes. Now, she will be around more as she will be a series regular in Season 27.

Curry won't be the only character from the series who will be back as a series regular. It was also announced that Kelli Giddish, who played fan-favorite character Detective Amanda Rollins and left...

'Law & Order’ Season 25 Faces Major Shakeup as a Significant Cast Member Exits
Image
Law & Order faces a major shakeup ahead of its landmark Season 25. Deadline reports that Mechad Brooks, who plays Detective Jalen Shaw, is exiting ahead of the upcoming season. Brooks starred as Detective Shaw for three seasons. Deadline reports that the "parting of ways" was mutual and Brooks is already "exploring other opportunities." Deadline confirms, however, that Tony Goldwyn, Reid Scott, Hugh Dancy, Odelya Halevi, and Maura Tierney, will return for the Dick Wolf police procedural's 25th season. Brooks' Detective Shaw replaced Anthony Anderson's Detective Kevin Bernad, and now there is a new vacancy at the 2-7 once again. Fans noticed Detective Shaw's quiet, minimal presence in the back-half of Season 24, with Detective Shaw not even in the crossover event with Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.

'Law & Order' Is Not the Only Show Facing Shake-Ups

It seems that most of the Dick Wolf procedurals are facing changes ahead of their respective seasons.

'That's My Dream': Chicago Fire Star Pitches Crossover With Law & Order: Svu Fan Favorite
Image
One Chicago Fire cast member is ready for a new crossover with Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. The two Dick Wolf-created shows last crossed over more than a decade ago, during the 2014–15 television season.

Jocelyn Hudon, who has portrayed paramedic Lizzie Novak in Chicago Fire since Season 12, was recently asked by Screen Rant which character from the Dick Wolf Universe she would like to see Novak cross paths with. "I want her to work with Olivia Benson [from] Law & Order: Svu," she answered. "That's my dream. I have a picture of her in my trailer. I love Law & Order: Svu and I think it would be really great for Novak and Benson to somehow interact. I could die happy. I would love to be like, 'This is what happened!' and she'd be like, 'I'll take it from here,' and I'd be like, 'Great!'"

Law & Order: Svu Brings Back Fan-Favorite Character for Season 27
Image
The long-running police procedural Law & Order: Svu scored a renewal for Season 27. Amid the good news, the NBC crime-fighting series has another good surprise.

After retiring in Season 24, Detective Amanda Rollins (Kelli Giddish) returned to the series in Seasons 25 and 26 as a guest star. Following her recent return, the longtime series must've thought about her time on the show, where she played the character in over 260 episodes on the main series. Per Deadline, Giddish is now officially making her way back to Law & Order: Svu as a series regular.

Despite massive cancellations for the 2025-2026 season, NBC bet again on one of its massive franchises: Law & Order. Both Dick Wolf series Law & Order and Law & Order: Svu scored a renewal, and will return for Season 25 and Season 27, respectively.

Image
“Law & Order: Svu” fans have a treat in store when the NBC procedural kicks off its 27th season this fall: the return of Kelli Giddish as a series regular.

Giddish, who exited the show during its 24th installment back in 2022, will be reprising her role as Detective Amanda Rollins, TheWrap has learned. The news comes three years after Giddish’s departure was first announced, though she has been a recurring character in Season 26, now working for NYPD’s Intelligence Unit.

Giddish will return as a series regular alongside Mariska Hargitay’s Captain Olivia Benson, Ice-t’s Sgt. Fin Tutuola, Peter Scanavino’s Ada Sonny Carisi, Kevin Kane’s Detective Terry Bruno and Aimé Donna Kelly’s Captain Renee Curry.

News of Giddish’s return comes weeks after it was revealed that two other “Law & Order: Svu” regulars, Octavio Pisano and Julianna Martinez, will leave the NBC procedural after the end of Season 26. Pisano,...

Per Deadline, Law & Order will return for its 25th season, while Svu will be back for its 27th. Law & Order: Svu Will Lose 2 Series Regulars After Season 26
Image
Law & Order: Special Victims Unit is set to lose two of its series regulars after the conclusion of season 26. The show is the first spinoff of NBC's hit procedural Law & Order, and first debuted in September 1999, and has become the longest-running live-action primetime series on American television. Mariska Hargitay stars as Olivia Benson, ostensibly the show's lead, and Law & Order: Svu has had a revolving door of cast members over the years. Two of the show's current stars look set to end their stints on the franchise at the end of the current season.

Per Deadline, Juliana Martinez and Octavio Pisano, who play the roles of Detectives Kate Silva and Joe Velasco respectively, are set to leave the show after the conclusion of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit season 26. Whilst there has been no renewal for future seasons yet, the duo will not reprise their...

'Law & Order: Svu' Loses Two Series Regulars After Season 26
Image
Change is coming to the squad room. Juliana Martinez and Octavio Pisano will not return as series regulars on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit if and when the long-running NBC procedural is renewed for its 27th season, as per Deadline. Martinez joined the cast in Season 26 as Detective Kate Silva, while Pisano first appeared in Season 23 as Detective Joe Velasco, a former undercover operative with a complicated past. While NBC has yet to comment on the nature of their exits, sources suggest the decision may be tied to the broader wave of cost-cutting measures happening across the network’s slate of scripted dramas.

It’s not just Svu feeling the squeeze. NBCUniversal recently renewed its One Chicago franchise — Chicago Fire, Chicago P.D., and Chicago Med— but not without budget trims that have reportedly impacted cast size, episode count, and overall production costs. These changes are part of an...

Law & Order: Svu Shockingly Loses 2 Series Regulars
Image
The cast of Law & Order: Svu has suddenly gotten a little smaller, as it has just been revealed that two series regulars will not be returning if the show gets its renewal for Season 26.

Per Deadline, it's been reported that Juliana Martinez and Octavio Pisano are finished as series regulars on Law & Order: Svu. Pisano joined the show previously in Season 23 as undercover detective Joe Velasco, while Martinez joined more recently in the current season as Detective Kate Silva. It's not yet known why the two stars are simultaneously exiting Law & Order: Svu, making it unclear if this was due to budget cuts, creative reasons, or a mixture of both. It's not uncommon for actors to be written out of long-running shows, or to have their roles reduced, as part of an effort to reduce the costs of increasingly-expensive shows.

‘Law & Order: Svu’ Star Octavio Pisano Explains How Velasco Finally Earns Benson’s Approval
Image
This article contains spoilers for the Feb. 20 episode of “Law & Order: Svu.”

In Thursday night’s episode of “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit,” Detective Joe Velasco, played by Octavio Pisano, learns the only way to catch a local rapist is to connect with his neighbors in Washington Heights, who don’t exactly trust the police.

His extra effort earns high praise from Captain Benson (Mariska Hargitay): At the end of the episode, she tells him he has “command presence.”

First, he had to befriend his noisy downstairs neighbor, an ambitious young security guard Danny (Ethan Jones Romero), who wound up in jail after beating up a man he thought was the suspect. Danny targeted the wrong man, but, as Benson suggests, he does know the neighborhood a lot better than Joe, and his information and connections help break the case.

Pisano spoke to TheWrap about how he...

John Belushi’s Widow Left Behind Something of Her Own: Deeply Personal Songs

Backstage at an Illinois festival last weekend, two children of pop culture legends were hashing out a set list. “We’ll do ‘The River’ and then ‘Good Morning Sun’ and then ‘Bones’ last,” says Ben Taylor, the rugged-looking son of James Taylor and Carly Simon. Law & Order Svu Season 26: Cast & Character Guide
Mariska Hargitay in Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (1999)
Law & Order Svu premiered on September 20, 1999.

Since then, we have all gotten to know and love the New York Detectives who work the Special Victims Unit cases.

Those detectives have changed several times as actors have come and gone from the show. Here are the Law & Order: Svu cast members and characters we'll follow during season 26.

Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay)

More than 550 episodes of Law & Order: Svu have been produced leading up to Season 26.

Olivia Benson has appeared in all of them.

Olivia Benson's Most Memorable Moments From 25 Years of Svu

She has been there from the beginning; we have seen her grow and evolve beautifully.

As the years passed, she went from being a detective to the head of the entire department.

The show wouldn't be the same without her.

At this point, Mariska Hargitay is so associated with Captain Benson that it's hard to think of her as any other character.

With Law & Order: Svu in its 25th season, NBC turned Rockefeller Center into the Olivia Benson Plaza, paying homage to the iconic series for two days, March 14-15. (It’s free and open to the public.) While checking it out, TV Insider caught up with Svu stars Octavio Pisano (Detective Joe Velasco) and Kevin Kane (Detective Terry Bruno) to get a few teases about what’s coming up on the NBC drama. In the March 14 episode, “Probability of Doom,” when a woman turns her husband in for possessing child pornography, the case is complicated by a sudden death. Benson tries to reconnect with a victim she saved. This episode “really affects what we’re working on right now, and it’s pretty exciting,” Kane teases. “This story sticks around a little bit.” Adds Pisano, “It’s been going on. At the heart of the show, which investigates sexually heinous crimes in New York City, is Hargitay’s Captain Olivia Benson. She has been the center of the series since episode one aired in 1999 and has climbed through the ranks to lead the team, coming across her own set of struggles along the way.

Detective Joe Velasco (Octavio Pisano) must face his past in the April 27 episode of Law & Order: Svu — and he can’t say no because it’s on Captain Olivia Benson’s (Mariska Hargitay) orders. Previously, Velasco was forced to reveal that, when he was younger, he and a friend, Chilly, were sent to a school for hitmen; the only way to leave was in a body bag.
