“A Prayer for the Dying” is written and directed by Dara Van Dusen and based on the novel by Stewart O’Nan. It takes place in 1870 in Friendship, Wisconsin, a small town of Scandinavian settlers still suffering the repercussion of the recent Civil War. When faced with a new and even deadlier threat, one man is forced to make a harrowing choice: save his young family or defend the community that gave him a second chance at life and meaning. Flynn will play Jacob Hansen, the sheriff responsible for the safety of the town, while Reilly will play the local doctor.

The British Film Institute (BFI) has issued a further 11 awards through the UK Global Screen Fund (Ukgsf), including Karim Aïnouz’s Rosebushpruning, Irish football story Saipan, starring Steve Coogan, and The Bureau-produced Moroccan co-production Behind The Palm Trees.

Rosebushpruning is the next feature from Brazilian director Aïnouz. It is a contemporary adaptation of Marco Bellocchio’s Fists In The Pocket, with Elle Fanning attached to star.

Producers are Kavac Film, The Match Factory and Surfilm, with CryBaby the minority UK producer on the project. Fremantle’s Italy-based The Apartment is on board as a co-producer, and Mubi is one of the backers.

A Prayer For The Dying from UK-France outfit The Bureau and Good Boy, produced by Jeremy Thomas’s Recorded Picture Company, are among the seven international co-productions to receive backing from the UK Global Screen Fund (Ukgsf).

In addition, 23 UK screen content businesses have been awarded funds to boost their international activities.

Ukgsf is financed through the UK government’s Department for Culture, Media and Sport (Dcms) and administered by the British Film Institute (BFI). The latest batch of awards sees over £1.3m being allocated through the international co-production strand and over £2m being allocated through the international business development strand.

The 10th Sundance Film Festival: London runs July 6-9 and will feature an industry section with keynote sessions led by A24 Execs Harpa Manku and Tom Lazenby and new London Film Festival head Kristy Matheson.

The trio will all headline events during the festival alongside producers Tristan Goligher and Mary Burke; casting agent Heather Basten; composer Nainita Desai; Elysian CEO Danny Perkins; and Black Bear International’s Luane Gauer.

Filmmakers Alice Lowe, Zeina Durra, Gurinder Chadha, and Marianna Palka will also headline sessions. The festival has also added three panel events to the schedule, with speakers including Past Lives director Celine Song, Girl filmmaker Adura Onashile, Polite Society’s Nida Manzoor, and Molly Manning Walker, writer-director of the buzzy Cannes pic How to Have Sex. The first major awards ceremony of the year took place tonight, with The Gotham Film & Media Institute hosting the 32nd Annual Gotham Awards at Cipriani Wall Street in New York City. Producers Tristan Goligher (Supernova) and Mike Goodridge (Triangle of Sadness) highlighted the importance of working across platforms and developing projects over an extended period during an industry keynote at the London Film Festival Tuesday.

The pair headed the keynote as part of the festival’s second day of industry events, and they were joined on stage by Pretty Red Dress writer-director Dionne Edwards and Mia Bays, Director of BFI National Lottery Film Fund who moderated the panel.

An uplifting documentary about an Irish teacher who uses Plato’s teachings to defuse violence among his young pupils is set to be adapted into a feature film by The Bureau, the producers of “Supernova.”

Directed by Neasa Ní Chianáin (“School Life”) and Declan McGrath and produced by David Rane for Soilsiú Films, “Young Plato” was recently released in U.S. cinemas following a major 40-festival run.

Whether onstage or onscreen, Ruth Wilson has never shied from intimate and demanding scenes, and she’s got plenty in her new film, True Things.

Based on the book by Deborah Kay Davies, it casts Wilson as Kate, a benefits worker who can’t resist a torrid affair with an ex-con known only as “Blond,” played by Tom Burke. Wilson says the pair and filmmaker Harry Wootliff loved working with “the queen of intimacy coaching,” Ita O’Brien.

“She was brilliant,” recalls Wilson, who reportedly left The Affair over issues with the way nude scenes on Showtime series were handled, among other concerns. “I’m really hoping it results in more interesting sex scenes on our screens because there’s a dialogue now and there wasn’t one before. Having an intimacy coach now means the discussion can happen in a pragmatic, practical, rational way.

The pic is the fourth commissioned by Netflix’s Director of UK Features, Fiona Lamptey, and shot in 2021 following The Wonder, I Came By and I Used to be Famous. The streamer will debut the movie in 2022.

Starring Ashley Madekwe (County Lines), Bukky Bakray (Rocks), Jorden Myrie (Stephen), Justin Salinger (Hanna), Samuel Small (The Nest) and newcomer Maria Almeida, the film chronicles an upper-middle-class woman’s perfectly crafted life beginning to unravel after the arrival of two shadowy figures in her town.

It was shot across London, Suffolk and Berkshire between September and November 2021. Producers are Tristan Goligher and Valentina Brazzini for The Bureau alongside Rob Watson for Air Street.

Martello-White has acting credits including Guerrilla, BBC series Collateral and ITV’s Deceit. He is an established name in theater following his own plays Torn and Blackta.

Harry Wootliff, one of Britain’s rising women filmmakers, is in Venice for the world premiere, in the Horizons section, of her second feature, “True Things,” starring Ruth Wilson and Tom Burke. Harry Wootliff’s “True Things,” starring Ruth Wilson and Tom Burke, has wrapped production after a six-week shoot in the U.K. and Spain.

The film, for which Variety can provide an exclusive first image (above), began shooting at the beginning of the year, but was forced to shut down due to the global pandemic. It resumed filming again in September in Ramsgate, in the east of England, and Malaga, in southern Spain.

French distributor Arp has acquired “Supernova,” a romantic drama starring Colin Firth and Stanley Tucci as a longtime couple on a road trip. The film, represented by The Bureau Sales, has now inked distribution deals in almost all territories worldwide.

The deal was signed by Bureau Sales’ Clémentine Hugot and Arp’s Michele Halberstadt.

Latest buyers for the film, directed by Harry Macqueen, include Madman in Australia, Cdc for Latin America, Lev in Israel, A Really Good Film Company in Hong Kong and Bir in Turkey.

Colin Firth and Stanley Tucci headline the cast with Oscar nominated Dp Dick Pope serving as cinematographer. Macqueen, whose onscreen debut was as a supporting player in Richard Linklater’s Me and Orson Welles (2008) first directed the 2014 drama Hinterland.

Only You filmmaker Harry Wootliff sets adaptation of Deborah Kay Davies novel as second project.

Ruth Wilson will lead the cast of Harry Wootliff’s UK drama True Things About Me, which Wilson is also producing alongside Jude Law, The Bureau and BBC Films.

The project is an adaptation of Deborah Kay Davies’ book of the same name, which chronicles a young woman living on the fringes of society who becomes intoxicated by a stranger who overwhelms her quiet life.

Law optioned the novel with his producing partner Ben Jackson through their banner Riff Raff Entertainment for Wilson to star.

After debuting on the fall festival circuit at Venice, Telluride and Toronto, A24 held Andrew Haigh’s finely wrought drama Lean on Pete for the less-crowded period of April, even though there is no question it is as awards-worthy as many of those films that did find a release in 2018. As I say in my video review (click the link above to watch), I didn’t warm to this story simply because my name is in the title, though that helped make it a must-see when I caught up with it in Telluride. Actually, I greatly admired the authentic nature of Haigh’s previous films Weekend and especially the marital drama 45 Years, which earned Charlotte Rampling a Best Actress Oscar nomination. Haigh’s films are about people, human stories that are subtly told, heartfelt without dwelling in sentimentality, and movies that take their time to unfold and sneak up on you.

Just in time for the Cannes announcements, Lynne Ramsay’s You Were Never Really Here, which debuted at last year’s event, is headed to U.S. theaters. Starring Joaquin Phoenix, the Amazon Studios feature had a solid opening in the U.K. last month. The title headlines a fairly wide pack of newcomers this weekend, including A24’s Lean On Pete by British filmmaker Andrew Haigh and starring Steve Buscemi, Chloë Sevigny and Charlie Plummer. Great Point Media/Paladin are launching Where Is Kyra? with Michelle Pfeiffer and Kiefer Sutherland in roles the director, Andrew Dosunmu, swears fans of the two will be surprised by. And Well Go USA is opening Tribeca ’17 thriller, The Endless in New York before heading to L.A. next week.

Also opening in limited release is Warner Bros.’ Pandas. Other titles making bows this weekend include Sweet Country with Sam Neil and Bryan Bishop as well as Shout!

The project is the latest from UK outfit The Bureau, the company behind autumn festival favourite Lean On Pete and previous titles 45 Years and Daphne.

In Only You, Costa and O’Connor play a couple who, after a one-night stand on New Year’s Eve, fall madly in love. Within weeks they are living together, and not long after they begin trying for a child. When conception isn’t immediate, pressure builds on the pair and the idea of a family begins to overshadow their relationship.

The Bureau’s Paris-based international sales arm is selling the film at Unifrance’s Rendez-vous this month.

Breaking Glass Pictures has acquired North American rights to former Screen International Star Of Tomorrow Alex Taylor’s directorial debut, Spaceship.

The distributor is planning a limited theatrical release in November, followed by DVD and VoD, for the film that had its world premiere at SXSW.

Spaceship centres on teenage cyber-goth Lucidia, whose mother died mysteriously seven years ago in the family swimming pool. Her father, Gabriel, is an archaeologist who can’t move on.

When Lucidia disappears in an apparent alien abduction, Gabriel is forced to confront her strange outsider friends and meets Tegan, a girl obsessed with unicorns and black holes. The story is told from multiple points of view, both teenage and adult.

Andrew Haigh’s Lean On Pete has sold out worldwide as joint sales agents The Bureau Sales and Celluloid Dreams have closed a slew of deals on the upcoming Us-set drama.

The most high-profile new deals is with Focus Features, who have picked up German speaking territories, Scandinavia and most of Asia and Eastern Europe.

Second edition of event for aspiring creatives reveals line-up.

Bafta has unveiled the line-up for the second edition of its Guru Live Festival, with speakers including Mad Max: Fury Road executive producer Iain Smith and 45 Years producer Tristan Goligher.

The two-day event will take place at Bafta’s Piccadilly venue in London between May 6-7 and Glasgow’s Centre for Contemporary Arts on May 6, featuring creatives from the worls of film, TV and gaming.

Iain Smith, whose credits also include Children of Men. will speak at the Glasgow event, while Tristan Goligher, also the producer of Weekend and the upcoming Lean On Pete, will appear in London.

Other speakers confirmed include writer-directors Peter Middleton and James Spinney (Notes On Blindness), and producers Camille Gatin (Girl With All The Gifts) and Oliver Roskill (Under The Shadow).

Most filmmakers must find a way to chop down 800-page novels and still retain some semblance of the original. Others have the opposite problem, fleshing a short story to fill a feature length movie. The classic example is Ernest Hemingway’s The Killers, which is less than three thousand words in length.
