Neon has acquired the rights to “Shelby Oaks,” a found-footage horror film (think: “The Blair Witch Project”) that is the feature directorial debut of YouTuber Chris Stuckmann.
Stuckmann is known for his movie review YouTube channel that has more than 2 million subscribers, but his debut feature was born with a Kickstarter in 2022. Stuckmann raised $1.39 million in less than a month, the most-funded horror film ever on Kickstarter.
“Shelby Oaks” follows Mia as she frantically searches for her sister Riley, who ominously disappeared in the last tape of her investigative series, “Paranormal Paranoids.” The characters are YouTubers themselves in the mid-aughts who in the course of their investigation discover that there’s a paranormal force that dates back to their childhood.

Fresh off the success of last weekend’s “Longlegs,” Neon announced Tuesday that it has acquired worldwide rights to the “Shelby Oaks,” which was written and directed by filmmaker and YouTube creator Chris Stuckmann. It marks Stuckmann’s feature directorial debut. The film is described as a documentary-found footage crossover. It will have its world premiere at Fantasia Festival on Saturday. Neon will release the film theatrically in the U.S. and handle international sales.
“Shelby Oaks” stars Camille Sullivan (“Hunter Hunter”), Brendan Sexton III (“Don’t Breathe 2”) and Sarah Durn (“Where the Crawdads Sing”). It’s almost time for the Fantasia Film Festival! North America’s premiere genre festival has become the place to be if you’re a horror aficionado, and as a proud Montrealer, I get a kick out of the fact that it all takes place in my home city. I’ve been attending the festival for many years, and I always end up seeing some incredible movies. Last year’s Fantasia featured the Canadian premiere of what’s probably the best horror movie of the last year or so – Late Night With The Devil, and this year’s program seems certain to be another winner, with Fantasia announcing the first wave of titles today.
Here are some of the highlights:

Released last fall, Lucky McKee’s “chamber thriller” Old Man had nothing to do with the Don’t Breathe films, despite starring Stephen Lang – who played the “Blind Man” in both Don’t Breathe and Don’t Breathe 2. But that didn’t stop the movie’s Russian distributor from marketing it as a prequel to those films! During an interview with Jb Hi-Fi, McKee laughed about the fact that his movie is part of the Don’t Breathe franchise, as far as Russia is concerned.
McKee said, “In Russia, they released it as Don’t Breathe: The Beginning. Kind of like the Italians used to do back in the day, with movies like Zombi 2.“
Sure enough, if you search the title Don’t Breathe: The Beginning, you’ll find confirmation that Old Man is a Don’t Breathe prequel in Russia.

Created by writer/director Aaron B. Koontz and writer Cameron Burns, the horror-comedy Scare Package was released on AMC Networks’ horror streaming platform Shudder in the summer of 2020. Scare Package is an anthology film that tells a series of blood-splattered, satirical horror stories from various directors, which are being recounted by Chad Buckley (Jeremy King), the owner of a video rental store called Rad Chad’s Horror Emporium. This year, Koontz and Burns have assembled a new team of directors for a sequel to Scare Package, the horror-comedy anthology Scare Package II: Rad Chad’s Revenge, which features the return of Chad Buckley, a character who feels like a combination of Joe Bob Briggs and Randy Meeks.

Created by Aaron B. Koontz and Cameron Burns, 2019’s Scare Package failed to gain the traction that other Shudder exclusive releases usually get. The main reason for that is that Scare Package is an anthology made by horror fans and for horror fans, inviting people to identify hundreds of references to classics of the genre and laugh about its tropes. In short, Scare Package is a niche release that doesn’t dialogue with casual horror fans or people searching for good movies to watch, regardless of the genre. While there’s nothing wrong with this approach, that makes recommending Scare Package harder, since the audience must have a specific background to enjoy its many horror-themed jokes. Scare Package II: Rad Chad’s Revenge, for better or worse, follows the same trend as the first movie. And as such, it has many of the same strengths and weaknesses as the original Scare Package.

Exclusive: The Kickstarter-backed horror film Shelby Oaks by YouTuber Chris Stuckmann has started production and found its key cast.
Camille Sullivan (Hunter Hunter) is stepping into the lead role, and is supported by Brendan Sexton III (Don’t Breathe 2), Michael Beach (If Beale Street Could Talk) Robin Bartlett (Shutter Island) and Keith David (The Thing). Charlie Talbert (The Big Short), Emily Bennett (Alone With You) and newcomer Sarah Durn (Where the Crawdads Sing) round out the cast.
The film centers around Mia’s (Sullivan) frantic search for her sister Riley, (Durn) after Riley ominously disappeared in the last tape of a group of paranormal investigators called the Paranormal Paranoids. As Mia’s obsession grows, she begins to suspect that the imaginary demon from Riley’s childhood may have been real. The project has been inspired by, and accompanied by, a long-lead online marketing campaign around the subject.

Earlier this week we broke the news that Shelby Oaks has become the most-funded horror film project on Kickstarter.
The feature, written and to be directed by YouTube film critic/filmmaker Chris Stuckmann, is based on a recent internet mystery about a group of missing paranormal investigators.
On Monday, we reported that the project had reached $650,000 from 6,700 backers on the crowdfunding platform after launching its online campaign only three weeks prior.
Four days after that article, however, the movie has now raced past $1M and added 4,500 backers. That’s good-going for an indie horror movie based on an original concept and without star names attached. The project is also drawing attention from studios, according to Stuckmann.
“It’s so crazy, I don’t know what to say,” the critic and filmmaker said in a video message to contributors. “We can already make the movie in the way we want to.

Exclusive: Shelby Oaks has become the most-funded horror film project on Kickstarter just a few weeks into its campaign.
The found-footage feature, written and to be directed by YouTube film critic/filmmaker Chris Stuckmann, is based on a recent Internet mystery about a group of missing paranormal investigators.
The project has raced to $650,000 from 6,700 backers on the crowdfunding platform after starting its online campaign three weeks ago.
The film will chart the story of the fictional mid-2000s U.S. investigative team called The Paranormal Paranoids. Multiple found-footage videos surfaced online last year that prompted horror and Arg (alternate-reality game) fans to speculate about the veracity of the case and the whereabouts of the investigators. One video appeared to show the abduction of one of the group, known as Riley.
Aaron B. Koontz of Austin-based Paper Street Pictures is producing the film, which will be combination of documentary, found footage and traditional film footage styles.
