10 Anime Where the Side Characters Are Cooler Than the Heroes
Image
In most anime shows, the spotlight shines the brightest on the main character, focusing on their journey of growth, redemption, power, etc. However, there are some series that feature strong anime side-characters who can effortlessly steal the show, even outshining the heroes and becoming fan favorites.

Whether through their heartbreaking backstories, unique abilities, or charismatic personalities not bound by “main-character tropes,” these are the side characters that have left a lasting impact on audiences and stepped out from under the shadow of their lead.

Killua Zoldyck: The Assassin Turned Ally Who Stole the Show in Hunter X Hunter Fans Can't Get Enough of Killua's Complexity

The 10 Best Anime with Absolutely No Fights in Them, Ranked
Image
Anime is a medium filled with series of every widely known genre, as well as shows that occupy genres not found anywhere else. For fans of fight scenes, this means it isn't hard to find the specific type of action that appeals to them. It also means that those who aren't interested in seeing powerful fighters combat each other still have an abundance of options to choose from.

Popular as battle Shōnen may be, many of the best anime ever don't contain any fights at all. This includes sports anime like Haikyu!!, romance anime like Your Lie in April, slice of life anime like Komi Can't Communicate, and so much more. These 10 anime all stand atop their respective genres, and while some may contain quick scuffles or playfighting, none of them feature a single real fight.

10 Disturbing Anime Endings That'll Make You Sick to Your Stomach
Image
After a long journey of trials and tribulations, most anime heroes arrive at their well-deserved happy ending, having defeated their adversaries and restored peace in the world. However, not all stories in anime follow uplifting fantasies with joyful finales. Some of anime’s best and most emotionally resonant narratives tap into much darker themes in their conclusions, leaving fans and heroes to bear the weight of cruel, disturbing epilogues.

These kinds of endings stick with audiences - for better or worse - long after the credits roll, their subversive and disquieting nature defying expectations by refusing to give audiences the satisfaction of a gratifying resolution. Be it a shocking final twist that snatches victory from the hands of the heroes at the last moment or an expectedly devastating climax to a narrative swarming with despair, anime’s cruelest and most disturbing endings can be controversial - yet never cannot have an impact.

10 Strongest Anime Villains That Dragon Ball's Krillin Can Easily Defeat
Image
Krillin has been part of the Dragon Ball franchise since 1985. He is Goku's best friend and is typically depicted as a comic relief character, but he has played a crucial role in protecting Earth on numerous occasions. Krillin is a master martial artist, and he now can destroy planets with powerful Ki blasts. Krillin may not be strong enough to beat many of Dragon Ball's notable villains, but he can easily defeat villains from other anime series.

Most of these anime villains possess supernatural abilities, but Krillin's Ki can easily overpower these abilities. Many of these villains are human fighters, and Krillin can evade most of their attacks with his superhuman reflexes, and his superhuman strength would enable him to knock several of them out with just one or two punches.

10 Shortest Anime Arcs of All Time, Ranked
Image
Some of the most popular anime of all time are frequently the longest-running series, with dozens, or even hundreds of episodes. Even when broken down into arcs, these shows can still feel like they take forever to finish--some arcs can be dozens of episodes. However, there are exceptions to the rule.

There are some anime arcs that don't take very long at all, often running for five episodes or fewer. These are often introductory arcs, or arcs that are meant to be a break from serious moments. These can often serve as low-investment ways to get anime fans into even the longest anime series.

10 Anime with Endless Halloween Costume Ideas
Image
Halloween is coming up and now is the time to find inspiration for a costume and finalize online orders. Thanks to anime's ever-growing popularity, many retailers stock pre-fabricated Naruto and Demon Slayer costumes that are as easy as click-and-collect. Some people will get creative and make a low-effort costume or go all-out like Heidi Klum and invest in an over-the-top outfit. Luckily, anime provides endless references to draw from, especially for couple and group costumes, theme parties, or just showing off pop-culture literacy.

The easiest anime references are the iconic school uniforms, which are not only required attire at Japanese schools but are a symbol of youth and one's formative years. Sailor Moon, Dan Da Dan, and Neon Genesis Evangelion all feature fairly basic uniforms that can be made with plaid skirts, white button-downs, and a tie or bow. Other anime characters can be captured simply with a cool suit,...

Anime's Best Groups & Factions That Define Their Series
Image
Factions within fiction, and especially anime, are a household concept. Having a family or team provides anime characters a sense of familiarity and camaraderie, while entire villain organizations, through sheer member size or infamy, carry a visually and aesthetically understandable sense of danger and overwhelming force.

Some anime characters like to go it alone, but plenty of others find strength in numbers, and they will either form or join a faction and get a sense of belonging. Some anime factions are outlaw squads whose members band together for mutual protection, while others are official organizations or even military units complete with their own uniforms and hierarchy. Many anime fans would like to meet some of the most powerful, interesting, and popular factions in anime and see what they stand for.

Real Sailor Moon Fans Don't Skip the Movies
Image
Sailor Moon is an iconic magical girl shojo based on a manga series that covers five story arcs. Those story arcs are split into five seasons in the original anime from the 1990s. The mangaka, Naoko Takeuchi, also wrote some amazing mini-arcs that were adapted into three movies that dovetail into the main Sailor Moon anime timeline.

While the three movies from the original Sailor Moon anime are technically filler arcs, they shouldn't be skipped by true fans. Not only are they highly enjoyable bonus content, they have some key character moments. It's even more crucial for Sailor Moon fans to watch all the movies from the anime reboot, Sailor Moon Crystal, because they cover main story arcs from the manga.

In other words, Sailor Moon rules a franchising empire that includes virtually every form of print or video.

With more than 46 million volumes sold, Sailor Moon numbers among the best shojo manga of all time. On a global scale, however, she's most recognizable in her animated, small-screen form. It's been over 25 years since the first anime series debuted in 1995, and the most recent one ended in 2016. New fans who want to discover the genesis of the series and dedicated Moonies looking for a refresher on their favorite episodes would benefit from a catalog of all Sailor Moon series in order.

The Best Character Arcs in Sailor Moon, Ranked
Image
Sailor Moon is an epic saga about a tragic princess of the Moon Kingdom who's reborn as an average teenage girl on Earth. She goes from being a regular student to the heavy mantle of responsibility that comes with being an intergalactic superhero. One of the best parts about Sailor Moon is the ensemble cast that grows with every story arc.

Each of the Sailor Moon characters is nuanced and complex, with their own goals, insecurities, and strengthsespecially Sailor Moon's allies, the Sailor Guardians and Tuxedo Mask. Even the more minor characters, like Sailor Moon's best friend Naru and many of the minor villains, have character development. Some of them have truly compelling character arcs that support the overall themes of the story about love, friendship, bravery, personal development, and standing up for what is right.

The Most Heartbreaking Deaths in Sailor Moon, Ranked
Image
Sailor Moon tends to be a pretty lighthearted magical girl anime. There's a big focus on friendship, developing romance, personal growth, and plenty of comical moments. But though there's plenty of lively and swoon-worthy story and character beats, the series also has its fair share of tragedy and high stakes.

As powerful as Sailor Moon and her fellow Sailor Senshi are, they can still be vulnerable to grave injuries and even death. Their enemies are just as powerful, and they cause plenty of damage. Some Sailor Moon deaths are heartbreaking because a hero sacrifices themselves for the greater good. Some of the more tragic villains finally redeem themselves only to perish later.

A Complete Cast and Character Guide for Hunter x Hunter

Quick Links Gon's Group Defines Hunter x Hunter Hunter x Hunter Features Some of the Best Anime Villains Hunter x Hunter's Supporting Cast Fleshes Out the World

Like many long-running shonen anime, Hunter x Hunter has an absolutely massive cast. These characters range from being world-famous, like Gon and Killua, to somewhat more obscure, like Chrollo and Meruem, to the extremely minor, like Tonpa and Zepile. One of the core themes of the series is about how everyone's journey matters, and so nearly every character, no matter how unimportant, receives some degree of development.

Because HxH has been adapted into two anime series with different casts, there are even more voice actors connected to the series than there are characters, and nearly every performer succeeds in perfectly bringing their character to life. Hunter x Hunter is among the most iconic shonen anime, and its success is largely owed to...

Sailor Moon Live-Action Spinoff Show Bible Uncovered From Library of Congress

The full and official show bible for the unmade American live-action Sailor Moon spin-off series Team Angel has recently been discovered in the Library of Congress archives.

Ray Mona posted on her official X (formerly Twitter) account about the TV treatment discovery for Team Angel, a U.S. live-action spin-off that attempted to Americanize the Sailor Moon IP. Mona's Team Angel YouTube video reveals that she was motivated to uncover the series' show bible after learning that former Bandai America president and Renaissance Atlantic CEO Frank Ward created the Sailor Moon spin-off show and had actually shot some promotional footage, initially released to the public in 2018. Mona launched her own investigation, which uncovered prototype dolls and concept art for the series. She withdrew all the materials submitted to the Library of Congress archives by Renaissance Atlantic and unearthed the complete TV treatment of Team Angel.

The Best Mystery Anime About Murder
Image
Anime's diverse genre categories are commendable. From high school rom-coms and historical dramas, to fantasy sci-fi and straight up shonen, anime has something for everybody, no matter how niche. Anime over-indulges in certain genres, like shonen action and mecha, but the tight tropes of murder mystery anime are often in short supply.

That's not to say that anime doesn't have any murder mystery series. The grand total is quite minuscule when compared to how much Western media celebrates this suspenseful genre. It's possible that American audiences are more accustomed to the makings of a murder mystery, but there are still some excellent anime series that embrace and subvert this storytelling genre.

Updated by Sage Ashford on February 9th 2024: This list has been updated to reflect Cbr's current publishing style, and add even more information about some of the best mystery anime ever made.

'90s Anime That Are More Relevant Today Than When They Premiered
Image
As time goes by and new generations of anime watchers emerge, so too does the way that they judge the series they're watching. Many popular anime from past decades —specifically, the '90s — no longer entertain audiences the way that they once did. However, for every one of these outdated '90s anime titles, there are countless more that have aged like fine wine.

The '90s were a time of significant change, both within the anime genre and the world in general. As a result, many of the Japanese series released during the time period are interested in exploring topics that feel distinctly modern and pushing the conventions of animation itself. This helps them hold up, even over two decades later.

Who Is The Best Waifu From Classic Anime?
Image
While there's plenty to love about modern anime, some classics still endure with audiences new and old. The characters tend to be the biggest jewel in a classic anime's crown. Many anime fans can date their first crushes back to amazing female anime characters from nostalgic series.
