While wholesome Christmas movies tend to be the go-to choice for most looking to binge on good flicks during the holiday season, unconventional Christmas films have also become known to become favorites to break up the typical genre fare. There is no reason you can't watch Home Alone or Love Actually and then mix it up with a little Die Hard and Gremlins. Christmas horror movies have become some of the best of the unconventional bunch, with films such as Black Christmas and Silent Night, Deadly Night becoming annual viewing for fans. Since being released in 2015, the Christmas black comedy horror film Krampushas been added to that list, and it looks like it's seeing strides again on streaming as the holiday approaches.

Thanks to a comic book spin-off, the greatest possible sequel to Krampus is just waiting to be adapted into a feature film. Nearly a decade after the 2015 horror film was released, fans still look back on the original, wondering why nothing more came from the incredibly creative holiday film.
The 2015 film by Michael Dougherty focused on a small family whose Christmas spirit was long gone, causing them to be visited by Santa Claus' malevolent companion, Krampus. The movie was a hit among fans everywhere, but despite acclaim from fans and critics, as well as a decent box office showing, the film stands alone. However, there's another tale in the Krampus universe, and it would make for the perfect sequel.

Krampus Finally Answers the One Question Everyone Has Been Asking About the Movie's Ambiguous Ending
Warning! Spoilers ahead Krampus!Fans can finally put this issue to bed, because Krampus' tie-in comic gives an official answer to the film's open ending. The 2015 horror/comedy has become a holiday staple for many, but the final shot of the movie has spurred debates among many. Thankfully, the lesser-known 'sidequel' gives fans all the answers they want.
In Krampus: Shadow of Saint Nicholas by Todd Casey, Michael Doughtery, Zach Shields, Laura Shields, Christian Diabari, Maan House, Stuart Sayger, and Michael Montenat, three individuals are visited by Santa's sinister companion, who puts them all through trials that help them find the Christmas spirit.
Thankfully, just like Max and his family in the film, each of these individuals learn the lesson they need to. As they celebrate the holiday with a renewed sense of life and purpose, they all find the same gift, a bell left by the Krampus to remind them he's still watching.

Since being released in 2009, Michael Dougherty's Trick 'r Treat has become a true cult classic. The movie was originally delayed for two years, but despite all the odds stacked against it, it found an audience that embraced it as a true modern-day Halloween classic. The cult interest was enough to see a sequel announced in 2013, but news has been scarce about the follow-up...until now. With Trick 'r Treat releasing a new 4K Ultra HD edition that is bound to be a treat for fans, Dougherty has offered an update on the sequel that sounds promising.
The update on the sequel comes during the new commentary track on the Ultra HD edition of the film, via Bloody Disgusting, which is moderated by Dead Meat's James A. Janisse and Chelsea Rebecca. During the chat, Dougherty reveals that the sequel script has been written with fellow writers Todd Casey and Zach Shields,...

The bungling of Trick ‘r Treat by Warner Bros. — shelving it after well-received festival screenings before unceremoniously dumping it straight to DVD in 2009 — is well-documented, but had it received a traditional theatrical release and underperformed, there’s a chance it may have never entered the cultural zeitgeist. Instead, its authentic cult roots allowed it to blossom into the contemporary classic we celebrate today.
Trick ‘r Treat stands alongside the opening credits of Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers as a felicitous distillation of the Halloween atmosphere on celluloid. Trick 'r Treat fans just got a much-needed update about the franchise's big-screen future. Michael Doughtery, who wrote and directed the original horror movie, recently offered a positive update on the long-gestating sequel.
In a new commentary track for Trick 'r Treat, released in Arrow Video's 4K Ultra HD edition of the movie, Dougherty opened up about the difficulties plaguing the sequel, which was first announced back in 2013. "Its tricky, because I think we really did capture lightning in a bottle with this one, and it nearly killed me. What a lot of people dont realize is that the bulk of our favorite horror movies, especially the ones that introduced new horror icons, were all independent movies," said Dougherty (via Bloody Disgusting) about having to work within the studio system for Trick 'r Treat.

Director Mike Dougherty has been slowly pushing forward Trick ‘r Treat 2, the long-awaited sequel to his horror anthology film Trick ‘r Treat (watch it Here). Two years ago, he said the sequel is in “very active development“ and last year he mentioned that there is a “really great script” in place that he wrote with his Krampus collaborators Zach Shields and Todd Casey. He also revealed that the new film will give Trick ‘r Treat’s little icon Sam a “proper nemesis” to face off with. So what’s taking this movie so long to get into production? Dougherty addresses the delay during an audio commentary track that’s included on the newly released 4K edition of the film from Arrow Video (you can pick up a copy at This Link).

Fans have been waiting 14 years for director Michael Dougherty to get around to making a sequel to his Halloween-themed horror anthology Trick ‘r Treat, but Dougherty has stayed busy as the years have gone by, making the Christmas-themed horror film Krampus, directing Godzilla: King of the Monsters, and contributing to the scripts for X-Men: Apocalypse, Godzilla vs. Kong, and the upcoming Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. Recently, there have been indications that a Trick ‘r Treat 2 might finally be moving forward. Dougherty has even said the screenplay has been written. But while he pushes that sequel toward production, he has revealed to Collider that he has an idea for Krampus 2 as well.
Dougherty told them, “We have an idea for a sequel on that one, too. It doesn’t necessarily center around a family as much as it might be about a group of strangers who are trapped somewhere.

Making a movie that turns into a holiday classic is no easy task. What's even harder is to make a classic so primed to be turned into a franchise as "Trick 'r Treat" and just ... stop after one movie. Although it was originally meant to arrive in theaters in October of 2007, Warner Bros. pushed back Michael Dougherty's directorial debut indefinitely. After a successful run at genre film festivals around the world, "Trick 'r Treat" ended up getting unceremoniously dumped two years later on home video. It wasn't until 2022 that the film even got a proper theatrical release.
Still, the film has endured as a staple of Halloween, with fans eager to learn about Dougherty's plans for a sequel — which has been a long time coming. Now, we finally have some solid information that not only is "Trick 'r Treat 2" still happening, but there's been genuine progress in its development.

Director Michael Dougherty and co-writers Zach Shields and Todd Casey have come up with an idea for a potential sequel to the 2015 film Krampus, which would focus on a group of strangers trapped somewhere instead of a family. Krampus featured a talented cast and was a success at the global box office, grossing $61.5 million against its $15 million budget, solidifying its place in the Christmas-themed horror subgenre. Dougherty also provided an update on the anticipated Trick 'r Treat sequel, stating that there are several drafts of a script and promising progress in its development, though budget and scheduling considerations still need to be addressed.
While a Krampus sequel is not officially in the works, that hasn't stopped director and co-writer Michael Dougherty from constructing a plot for a follow-up film. In conversation with Collider, Dougherty revealed that he and Krampus co-writers Zach Shields and Todd Casey have devised an idea for a second Krampus movie.

It’s Time for Our Annual ‘Trick ‘r Treat 2’ Update; Michael Dougherty Teases a “Really Great Script”
The legend of Trick ‘r Treat has only grown and grown in the years since its original release in 2007, with Michael Dougherty’s seasonal anthology becoming something of a holiday horror classic. Sam is of course at the center of the property as a true Halloween icon, with various toys, costumes and decorations filling up stores like Spirit Halloween every October.
But while the world of Trick ‘r Treat has been expanded upon with various comics, we’ve still never gotten the sequel we’ve been waiting over 15 years for. It’s become an annual tradition to get an update on the status of the project each and every October, with Dougherty revealing at Beyond Fest just last year that Trick ‘r Treat 2 was in “very active development” at the time.

For as much as I love horror and the Halloween season, I am something of a softie at heart, so the Christmas season is the time of year when I really thrive. I love Christmas songs and holiday treats, and I will pretty much watch any and every movie that has some kind of a Yuletide angle to it. That being said, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that Michael Dougherty’s Krampus was a film that immediately captured my heart back when it was released in 2015, and it became one of my required viewings every December once it hit home media, ultimately becoming part of our traditional viewings to celebrate the holiday season. And I think that’s something most genre fans have done as well over the years, so I’m not sure that I have to do much to sell you on the film with this...

"Fans of the film who want to revisit these twisted stories, as well as new readers discovering them for the first time, are in for a real treat.

They're known for conjuring seasonal scares, but their next project will center on a monster that has no problem stomping cities all year long. Variety reports that Michael Dougherty and Zach Shields are set to co-write Godzilla 2 for Legendary.
Horror fans are familiar with Dougherty, whose 2007 film, Trick ’r Treat, has become a cult Halloween classic. Shields, meanwhile, teamed up with Dougherty (along with Todd Casey) to write the screenplay for the 2015 holiday horror film, Krampus, which was also directed by Dougherty.
A writers' room might be in the works for the shared cinematic universe of Godzilla and King Kong, who are set to have a colossal showdown in 2020's Godzilla vs. Kong, but at the moment, Dougherty and Shields are only set to write the forthcoming sequel.

There aren’t a lot of horror and sci-fi titles arriving on Blu-ray and DVD this Tuesday (there are four, to be exact), but the few we do have to look forward to are an eclectic and entertaining bunch nonetheless. Scream Factory is giving HD overhauls to both Death Becomes Her and the cult classic Sssssss this week, and Christmas is coming a bit early this year by way of Michael Dougherty’s Krampus, which hits Blu-ray and DVD on April 26th. Our last release for this week is a pair of 1970s underground classics, Crypt of the Living Dead and House of the Living Dead, which arrive together on DVD courtesy of Vinegar Syndrome.

• Release Date: In Theaters Now

• Directed By: Anthony Scott Burns, Kevin Kolsch, Nicholas McCarthy, Adam Egypt Mortimer, Gary Shore, Kevin Smith, Sarah Adina Smith, Scott Stewart, Dennis Widmyer

What’s this? A new horror anthology centered around a myriad of holidays and helmed by some cats I really dig (I mean, c’mon; look at that list of die-rectors up there)? You know, normally I’d make some ridiculous pun alluding to the quality or lack thereof of whatever film was at hand, and this time I think I’ll do that, too. Let’s see if this one is going to be more treats than tricks, or just an overstuffed and overcooked turkey!

The Nightmare During Christmas: Doughtery’s Cutesy Morality Play on the Christmas Spirit
Exploring the adverse aspects of Christmas, one of the most cherished holidays around the globe, is nothing new in cinema. Irate Christians were nonplussed about Bob Clark’s 1974 serial killer flick Black Christmas and its 2006 remake, claiming it compromised the spirit of their cherished holiday. And there are all those nagging, sordid details about good ole St. Nick’s bad side, conscientiously whittled away throughout centuries of increasingly honed capitalistic tendencies as regards the holiday. Several recent films have resurrected ideas about Santa’s nastier habits and what he does to the children that are actually naughty, like Dutch filmmaker Dick Maas’ Saint (2010) or Jalmari Helander’s inspired Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale (2010) from Finland. Genre director Michael Doughtery makes a memorable entry in this growing subgenre with Krampus, a creative though utterly declawed venture which plays...

Today, Universal Studios and Legendary unleash a new holiday horror in theaters everywhere, Michael Dougherty’s Krampus, and to get you guys ready, Daily Dead brought back highlights from the film’s press conferences held earlier this week.
Check out what co-writer/director Dougherty, as well as a trio of the movie’s co-stars—Adam Scott, Toni Collette and Allison Tolman—had to say about working on Krampus, and be sure to look for the film in theaters this weekend.
Toni Collette on what she loved about Krampus: There are a lot of things that I like about this movie. I have never read anything like it and I haven't seen anything like it. I guess the ultimate message is, you know, for those who've lost their sense of spirit, faith, and connectedness at Christmas. It's about family. The family finds their way. I recently had the opportunity to attend a press conference with Krampus director Michael Dougherty, who has directed both a Halloween movie with Trick 'r Treat and now a Christmas movie. After joking that the next holiday horror film he would be making would be set during Passover, he got into talking about his fantastically fun new film, Krampus.
One of my favorite aspects of the film was the terrifying creature designs. There were so many wonderfully horrific holiday monsters in it, and the design for Krampus himself was particularly nightmarish. When asked about coming up with the design for the character, the director shared that he got his start in the business doing traditional animation for Nickelodeon and MTV. He explained that when it comes to creating these films and developing the script and story, he dives into sketching things out:

Michael Dougherty’s Krampus — based around the German humanoid folklore figure who punishes naughty children — wants to be the White Elephant of the holiday movie season, a gleefully crude antidote to the saccharine holiday stories that crowd multiplexes this time of year. But Krampus doesn’t automatically succeed by existing. It can’t occasionally be subversive and weird, and then still rely on all of the same bad tropes of not only every other holiday movie, but the horror genre as well.
Dougherty’s debut feature, Trick ‘r Treat, was the definition of a sleeper; a Halloween anthology that was the equivalent of a razor blade stuffed in an apple. It was comfort food for genre fans, but spiced up with a thrilling disregard for the usual taboos and moralistic equilibrium of horror. Kids were murdered, protagonists were mercilessly slaughtered, and even fables became twisted cautionary tales.

Univerasal Pictures and Legendary have released a new Look Inside featurette for Krampus, which goes behind-the-scenes of this horrifying Christmas nightmare. Along with new footage from the movie, we get to hear from director and co-writer Michael Dougherty about how this ancient legend was revived for modern audiences. We are also visited by members of the cast, including David Koechner, who plays Howard, Stefania Owen, who plays Beth, and Adam Scott who plays Tom. Best of all, we get a new look at all the beasties on display in this thrilling, pitch black comedy.
Krampus is being compared to Gremlins, with some calling it an instant Christmas classic. The first Krampus clip arrived yesterday, giving us a good look at the monster in this scary tale. We're not sure how the Krampus was called into this situation. But one thing is for sure, he wants to eat souls and drag young bodies back to Hell.

Krampus is being compared to Gremlins, with some calling it an instant Christmas classic. The difference between that 1984 monster movie and this new comedy thriller is that you had to pay full ticket price to see the title characters in Gremlins. The first Krampus clip gives us a good look at the beast right off the bat. And it's terrifying.
We're not sure how the Krampus was called into this situation. But one thing is for sure, he wants to eat this young woman's soul and then drag her body back to the South Pole. Watching Krampus trot along rooftops is profoundly scary, and if the rest of the movie can keep up with this gloriously tense footage, it will probably become another classic holiday cinema staple on par with It's a Wonderful Life, Elf and A Christmas Story.

For those who like a little horror with their christmas tidings, Legendary Comics has something right up your alley with Krampus: Shadow of Saint Nicholas. Just as in Trick R’ Treat: Days of the Dead, Krampus is also split up into four short stories that intertwine amongst one another. While Trick R’ Treat: Days of the Dead has a prevailing thread of hope throughout its stories, Krampus skews more towards the notion of redemption.
In each Christmas tale there is at least one, if not more, character who is attempting to find their way out or back from something. Book I, for instance, stars a mall santa...

In each Christmas tale there is at least one, if not more, character who is attempting to find their way out or back from something. Book I, for instance, stars a mall santa...

Make sure this album is on your list this holiday season. The Krampus – The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack will release digitally on December 4, 2015, on Back Lot Music.
The album features the original music created by composer Douglas Pipes (Monster House, Trick ‘R Treat), pre-orders available now on iTunes. A CD is forthcoming, while Waxwork Records will distribute the soundtrack on vinyl, pre-orders available starting December 4th at www.waxworkrecords.com. The digital album also features a bonus track of the popular tune “Carol of the Bells,” rewritten and appropriately retitled “Krampus Karol of the Bells.”
When creating the score, Pipes wanted to remain true to the spirit of Christmas. “We used melodies of Christmas carols, sometimes just fragments, sometimes altered, as well as traditional Christmas instruments throughout,” said Pipes. He knew it was going into dark fantasy-horror territory, but to make the score unique Pipes created a theme for Krampus...

Universal Pictures and Legendary Pictures have released a new featurette that explains the history of the title character of Krampus, their new Christmas-themed horror movie written and directed by Michael Dougherty. He's the man responsible for my favorite Halloween movie, Trick 'r Treat, and it looks like he's going to bring the same kind of humor, horror, and holiday vibe to this movie. Adam Scott, Toni Collette, David Koechner, Allison Tolman, Conchata Ferrell, Stefania Lavie Owen, Krista Stadler, and Emjay Anthony star, and the film opens in theaters on December 4th. Watch the full trailer here if you haven't seen it yet.
Legendary Pictures’ Krampus, a darkly festive tale of a yuletide ghoul, reveals an irreverently twisted side to the holiday. When his dysfunctional family clashes over the holidays, young Max (Emjay Anthony) is disillusioned and turns his back on Christmas. Little does he know, this lack of festive spirit...

After the table is cleared of turkey and cranberry sauce later this week, it won't be long before Michael Dougherty's Krampus stomps into theaters on December 4th. Ahead of the film's release, a new featurette has been revealed that examines the Christmas demon and shows why you'll want to stay off his naughty list.
"Legendary Pictures’ Krampus, a darkly festive tale of a yuletide ghoul, reveals an irreverently twisted side to the holiday.
When his dysfunctional family clashes over the holidays, young Max (Emjay Anthony) is disillusioned and turns his back on Christmas. Little does he know, this lack of festive spirit has unleashed the wrath of Krampus: a demonic force of ancient evil intent on punishing non-believers.
All hell breaks loose as beloved holiday icons take on a monstrous life of their own, laying siege to the fractured family’s home and forcing them to fight for...

From the wicked mind that brought us the Halloween cult classic Trick 'r Treat, director Michael Dougherty, comes a new thriller just in time for Christmas, Universal Pictures' Krampus. With just under two weeks until Krampus hits theaters, the studio has released a new featurette. This preview not only shows how Krampus has invaded mainstream culture, but offers insight into how this terrifying legend came to be.
This preview features footage from TV shows such as The League, Family Guy and The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, along with news footage showing how real-life people are trying to keep the Krampus tradition alive by dressing up as this demonic companion to St. Nicholas.
