From ‘Oh, Hi!’ & ‘Diciannove’ To ‘Folktales’ & ‘House On Eden’, Indies Saw A Window This Weekend And Grabbed It – Specialty Preview
Image
It’s a big weekend for smaller indie distributors – or at least not the biggest – as they spotted a weekend with nothing new from A24 or Neon and just one major studio opening in what has, and will be, been a crowded summer.

MCU’s The Fantastic Four: First Steps is the 800-pound gorilla – other studio films “cleared out of the weekend,” says one indie distribution executive. So edgier fare has a better shot. Sony Pictures Classics’ Oh, Hi! and Roadside Attractions’ The Home open on 1,000 screens, IFC’s House on Eden on 600. Magnolia doc Folktales, Oscilloscope’s Diciannove and Greenwich Entertainment’s Shoshana are limited releases, which can always be good counter-programming.

“Often in the summer you are constantly just fighting for screens and looking for whatever weekend you can get the most theaters,” said another exec. Not that it’s a breeze to find space, with tentpole fare...

Pete Davidson Horror Movie 'The Home' Fails Miserably on Rotten Tomatoes
Image
Let's be honest. When you hear the name Pete Davidson, you don't think of horror movies, right? You think of things like Saturday Night Live, Ariana Grande, and the 2020 dramedy The King of Staten Island. Maybe Bodies Bodies Bodies comes to mind, but his name isn't exactly synonymous with the genre. Kudos to him for trying something different, though, but unfortunately his new psychological horror flick, The Home, missed the mark with critics upon its release today, earning just a 24% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

"Ninety-seven torturous minutes of muddled storytelling, tiresome horror tropes and poorly delivered social commentary," said MovieWeb's own Mark Keizer in his review of The Home, while Robert Daniels from RogerEbert.com added that it's "a brain-dead horror film whose potential for fun campy excess is undercut by its own self-satisfied twist and its illogical turns." Joseph Robinson from Fish Jelly Films also wasn't impressed with The Home,...

James DeMonaco in The Purge: Anarchy (2014)
Exclusive: ‘The Home’ Clip Reveals The Hells Lurking On The Fourth Floor…
James DeMonaco in The Purge: Anarchy (2014)
James DeMonaco is known for creating the iconic Purge franchise, which sadly feels more prescient with each passing day. But after a slew of successful films, DeMonaco is branching out with a new tale of terror: The Home, which tackles the massive topic of aging. Written by DeMonaco and his writing partner Adam Cantor, they both prove that they know how to craft one heck of a wild and creepy movie.

In the new film:

A rebellious twenty-something is sentenced to community service at a quiet retirement home. The residents on the fourth floor are strictly off-limits, said to require “special care.” As his suspicions grow and he digs deeper, he uncovers a chilling secret that puts both the residents’ lives and his own in grave danger.

In our exclusive clip, our hero gets a glimpse at what lurks on the mysterious fourth floor.

Review: The Home is a Gory Yet Unsatisfying Horror Misfire
Image
James DeMonaco’s elder care thriller The Home feels like another movie’s in-universe fake watch. Like, if in a Scream sequel, teens exclaimed, “Shut up, I’m trying to watch the Pete Davidson old folks horror flick!” It’s predictable yet outlandish; a narrative that operates by presuming you know what’s coming and that doesn’t matter. DeMonaco and co-writer Adam Cantor deal in the horrors of twilight years and Boomerisms, but commentaries get lost in a jump-around tale of asylum frights under the guise of senior care. Where The Rule of Jenny Pen is a more psychological takedown of aged paranoias, The Home opts for gruesome midnighter wackiness—whether intentional or not.

Davidson stars as Max, a foster-kid slacker who can’t keep himself out of trouble. The death of his brother Luke weighs heavily years later, driving him down a path of torched potential. After his latest vandalism arrest,...

Pete Davidson's New Horror Movie From The Purge Director Looked Promising, But Critics on Rotten Tomatoes Hated It
Image
Pete Davidson of Saturday Night Live fame is known for his comedic timing and his stand-up shows. However, the actor and comedian has further branched out to different genres and has just had his first true attempt at a horror film with The Home, after first having a go in the dark comedy horror with 2022's Bodies Bodies Bodies.

The horror film just debuted in theaters, and it comes from The Purge creator James DeMonaco. The Home had all the ingredients for a successful horror release, with a chilling premise and an experienced filmmaker. However, as The Home hit theaters on Jul. 25, the horror debuted with an abysmal 26% approval score from the critics on Rotten Tomatoes.

The psychological horror's rating comes from 19 reviews, and the score might fluctuate as more opinions come in. However, The Home is not off to a great start. Since the film has just premiered, there is no audience score available,...

‘The Home’ Review: Pete Davidson Looks Completely Lost in This Amalgam of Classic Horror Films
Image
“The Home” has some curiosity value attached to it: How will “Saturday Night Live” alum Pete Davidson fare in his first non-comedic performance? However, its major selling point might be that it comes from James DeMonaco, the filmmaker behind the commercially successful “The Purge” franchise. Audiences drawn to “The Home” for either reason might come out disappointed. Davidson shows he may not have the chops to carry a horror film, while DeMonaco fails to deliver any thrills this time. Ultimately, it’s a by-the-numbers effort that proves quite disappointing.

Davidson plays Max, a troubled young man sentenced to four months of community service at a retirement home in remote upstate New York. Max grew up in a foster home run by kind parents (Jessica Hecht and Victor Williams), though they are all now grieving the passing of his foster brother who died by suicide. The tenants of the retirement home,...

‘The Home’ Director on How His Movie Is Inspired by Boomers Screwing Younger Generations and the Power of Pete Davidson’s Dramatic Acting
Image
“The Purge” series writer and director James DeMonaco has never shied away from political themes in his movies. But he had a whopper of an idea that led to his latest film, “The Home,” which he directed and co-wrote with Adam Cantor.

“This generation being raped by previous generations coalesced into this idea of this old age community that wasn’t what it seemed,” he says.

In the film, Pete Davidson plays Max, a rough but kind-hearted young man sentenced to community service at a retirement home. But he quickly learns that the residents — played by veteran actors like John Glover and Bruce Altman — and the facility itself hold some dark and deadly secrets.

Needless to say, DeMonaco says this horror movie ultimately underscores tension between generations.

“There is this underlying theme in the film about how the previous generations are now robbing this generation of many resources on the planet,...

‘The Home’ Review: Pete Davidson Deadpans His Way Through a Cynical Horror Freak-Out
Image
Early in James DeMonaco’s The Home, the deeply troubled Max (Pete Davidson) arrives at the retirement home where he’s been assigned to work as a janitor for community service hours, and it’s instantly clear that something is really off about the place. Max first eyes a creepy-looking old person staring out of a window on the top floor before walking inside the home and hearing 1930s big band music playing slightly out of tune on a Victrola and, then, peeping into a room to find an elderly woman in a porcelain doll mask having sex.

It’s all meant to be ominous, but there’s a randomness to these supposedly unsettling sights and sounds that we glimpse throughout the film—a hodgepodge of jump scares and disturbing imagery in search of a cohesive story. DeMonaco and Adam Cantor’s script is full of twists and turns that...

‘The Home’ Review: Pete Davidson Headlines Intriguing but Uneven Nursing-Home Horror From ‘The Purge’ Creator
Image
Ever since his brother died, Max (Pete Davidson), the protagonist of James DeMonaco’s new horror film The Home, has moved through the world with a melancholic listlessness. He’s plagued by nightmares of his final days with Luke (Matthew Miniero), a gangly teen who took his own life when Max was 11 years old. When Max, now in his 20s, can’t sleep, he hops out of bed and tags buildings with murals pulled from his dreams.

When we meet Max, he’s been arrested by cops for trespassing and spray painting. His adoptive parents (Jessica Hecht and Victor Williams) bail him out and cut a deal with the authorities: In lieu of jail time, Max will serve as a superintendent for a nursing home. The gig isn’t ideal, but neither is the reality of prison.

Working from a screenplay co-written with Adam Cantor, James DeMonaco, best known for the The Purge series,...

‘The Home’ Review: Subpar Pete Davidson Thriller Tries to Put the ‘Boo’ in Boomers
Image
If the late, great George A. Romero has an heir apparent, James DeMonaco has a serious claim to the throne. His film series “The Purge,” about a yearly American holiday where murder is legal, is — much like Romero’s zombie movies — a blistering critique on modern America’s decay, which shines a light on the fragility of social structures we take for granted. Except in DeMonaco’s world people have not turned on each other because civilization collapsed. In “The Purge,” civilization collapsed because people wanted an excuse to turn on each other.

So a brand new DeMonaco film is always an exciting prospect. Or at least, it was until “The Home.” “The Home” is yet another angry film. The target of its ire is relevant and it warrants skewering. But for some reason DeMonaco, who’s usually so eager to confront his audience, pulls his biggest punches. “The Home...

James DeMonaco Opens ‘The Home’ and Talks Social Commentary, Pete Davidson & More [Interview]
Image
Evil never gets old in The Home, and neither do horror movies for filmmaker James DeMonaco.

“I think horror is the best genre to watch with a crowd,” DeMonaco tells me. “I also think it’s a great vessel to smuggle sociopolitical commentary, like John Carpenter and George Romero did. It’s still fun to get people thinking.”

The Home stars Pete Davidson as a graffiti artist sentenced to community service at a quiet retirement home. In DeMonaco’s words, “While there, he begins to suspect that something strange is going on. He discovers a sinister plot at the center of this very creepy home.”

As the creator and driving force behind The Purge franchise — including a new film in the works — DeMonaco is no stranger to injecting social commentary into his work. The Home continues that tradition, albeit with a more subtle approach.

“I think I’ve crossed the...

All his employers ask is that he leave the place just as he found it and do not venture up to the fourth floor under any circumstances. Easy enough. But rebellious by nature, Davidson lets his curiosity get the best of him. It nearly gets him killed.
