Seven Bucks To Produce ‘Who Killed WCW?’ Docuseries For Vice TV
Image
Exclusive: The rise and fall of World Championship Wrestling (WCW) is to be explored in a new docuseries for Vice TV.

Dwayne Johnson and Dany Garcia, founders of Seven Bucks Productions, are exec producing Who Killed WCW?

WCW was founded by Ted Turner in 1988 after his Turner Broadcasting System acquired the assets of National Wrestling Alliance territory Jim Crockett Productions. It competed aggressively with the then-titled WWF (now WWE), regularly beating it in the ratings on Monday nights where its Monday Nitro outrated Monday Night Raw. However, it endured significant losses and suffered from the merger between Turner parent Tim Warner and AOL and was shut down in 2001.

The series, which premieres on June 4, will explore the complex factors that led to the promotion’s downfall, including management challenges, creative decisions, and the intense competition during the infamous Monday Night Wars. It will feature exclusive, in-depth interviews with wrestlers, executives,...

Guillermo Garcia Medina In ‘The Patients of Dr. Garcia,’ Explained: What Happens To Him In The End?
Image
The Patients of Dr. Garcia centers around a Republican named Dr. Guillermo Garcia, who lives in a war-torn Madrid. Guillermo Garcia lost his job, his family, and, most importantly, his identity once the Spanish Civil War ended and Francis Franco took over Spain. Guillermo restarted his life by using the alias Rafael Cuesta. At the start of the Spanish Civil War in 1936, when many injured soldiers were taken to the hospital, Guillermo Garcia Medina, one of the most capable and idealistic medical professionals, sought to provide them with the finest care possible. In times of blood scarcity, Guillermo was seen donating his own blood to his patients in an attempt to save their lives. Many of his injured patients who made a full recovery owed Guillermo their lives, but Guillermo regarded them as close friends. One of them was the Communist sergeant Pepe, who remained close to Guillermo for almost the entirety of his life.

Image
The Patients of Dr. Garcia (also titled as Los pacientes del doctor Garcia), is a Netflix spy thriller series based on Almudena Grandes’ espionage novel of the same name. The series covers the period following the Spanish Civil War, when Francisco Franco seized power and ruled Spain. Following the war, Guillermo Garcia Medina, a Republican, assumed a false identity to reside in Madrid. His former patient and close friend, Manuel Arroyo was a Republican ambassador who embarked on a risky expedition to join a clandestine organization run by Clara Stauffer. Clara Stauffer, a Falangist and Nazi supervisor, was assisting Third Reich war criminals and fugitives to flee to Argentina through this secret network; thus, Manuel took the identity of a convicted soldier to ensure his escape. Mediapro Studio, Banijay, Zeta, Filmax Titles at Series Mania Underscore Spain’s Streamer Power
Image
Coming Next from Spain, a showcase of five series, unspooled at Series Mania on March 21 just after a Spanish series, “Wrong Side of the Tracks” from Mediaset España and Alea Media, had scored 149.6 million watching hours in three weeks on Netflix for Seasons 1 and 2.

That platform connection and power of Spanish series threaded most of the series and much of the commentary at Tuesday’s Next from Spain, supported by Audiiovisual from Spain.

At least in terms of titles now ready to hit the market, there’s little sign as yet of platform pullback in Spain. Rather, it remains a ground zero in the streamer wars.

2023 will see the release of 70 new Spanish scripted series and 27 returning seasons of titles such as “Elite” “Rapa” “30 Coins” and “Veneno,” presenter Irene Jiménez, at Audiovisual 451, told a Next From Spain audience.

Of these new titles, 36% will be produced by linear TV broadcasters,...

Michael Madsen in Trailer for Action Comedy 'Welcome to Acapulco'
"Do as I say, or we're both dead." Momentum Pictures has debuted a trailer for a new action comedy titled Welcome to Acapulco, made by Cuban filmmaker Guillermo Iván. The tropical crime plot involves a kid who ends up in landing Acapulco, Mexico instead of New Mexico. As soon as he lands, he finds himself on the run from high-powered criminals, deadly hitmen and the Feds, all looking for a mysterious package that he has allegedly smuggled through customs yet knows nothing about. Mike Kingsbaker stars as Matt Booth, and the cast includes Michael Madsen, William Baldwin, Bradley Gregg, Ana Serradilla, Ana Layevska, Zach Rose, Guillermo Garcia, Maria Elena Heredia, and Loris Curci. This looks ridiculous (and we've seen before anyway) but entertaining. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Guillermo Iván's Welcome to Acapulco, from YouTube: Video game designer Matt Booth has one shot to save his career...
