What Is Going on With Asap Rocky’s Album ‘Don’t Be Dumb’?
Image
Asap Rocky has been teasing his forthcoming album Don’t Be Dumb by name for over two and a half years, over the span of which he: performed potential tracks on it at Rolling Loud twice, starred in two high-profile feature films, began raising one infant with Rihanna, welcomed another, and now is waiting on the arrival of a third, oh, and beat a felony assault case levied by his former friend and collaborator that could have sent him to jail for 24 years. While there’s understandably been some restlessness...

One Year Later, These L.A. Artists are Still Grateful for The Pop Out
Image
A year ago today, Kendrick Lamar’s one-night-only The Pop Out: Ken & Friends concert shut down LA (and the rap world) on Juneteenth. And while so much of the attention centered on Kendrick performing the Drake diss “Not Like Us” a whopping five times, the Compton rhymer was also lauded for providing a platform for up-and-coming West Coast acts. The concert streamed worldwide via Amazon, and its first set, curated by DJ Hed, was the first major look for some of the dozens of artists who took the stage — for Remble,...

The now-disgraced music mogul P Diddy is currently being sincerely examined in a court of law due to all the allegations against him, and this scrutiny into his past and love life is especially bringing about some truths that people never really knew of. Like his previous love affairs that were never quite confirmed publicly by either party.

This includes the record producer’s being romantically linked with numerous celebrities, including the likes of Lori Harvey, Steve Harvey’s stepdaughter, and model Tina Louise, with whom the rapper was reported to have had a “casual” and “fun” romance, among others. That said, here’s a deeper dive into those rumored relationships.

‘Nobody Wants This’, ‘Monsters’ & ‘Forever’ Teams On Showing LA On Screen – Netflix Fysee
Image
Los Angeles has had a tough few months. From the wildfires devastating large swathes of the city at the start of the year to the current unrest in downtown LA, the city has faced its challenges.

Netflix, however, has been keen to show Los Angeles on screen in three of its latest hits – Nobody Wants This, Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story and Forever.

Nobody Wants This is a romcom, largely set on the east side of LA, starring Kristen Bell and Adam Brody; Monsters, the Ryan Murphy-produced story of the murders of José and Kitty Menendez, takes place in Beverly Hills and Forever is Mara Brock Akil’s adaptation of the Judy Blume novel set in Baldwin Hills and Beverly Hills.

All three shows were designed as a “love letter” to LA, according to those behind them.

How Music Supervisor Kier Lehman Made ‘Forever’ Soundtrack A Love Letter to L.A.
Image
The Netflix series “Forever” succeeds at conveying the powerful emotions of first love. Coupled with Justin and Keisha’s contrasting lifestyles and family dynamics, the teen love affair allowed audiences to “see themselves,” says music supervisor Kier Lehman, reflecting on the overwhelmingly positive reactions to Season 1.

“Young people can see themselves in it and connect with their own Justin and Keisha experiences as kids in their relationships and home life,” he told Variety. “These lifestyles, found in two different types of families, offer an experience that people can relate to or aspire to. Feeling that connection that draws them further into the story.”

The same gravitational pull could be said of Lehman’s contributions to curating the soundtrack for the season. His music selection highlights include featuring Daniel Caesar’s “Blessed” during a heartwarming reunion between Justin and Keisha at Martha’s Vineyard, which he recalled was an “emotional climax...

Rakim on His First Album in 15 Years ‘The God’s Network: Reb7rth’
Image
Rakim is regarded by generations of rap fans as The God Mc. But we may need to start referring to him as The God Mc / Producer. Sitting in his studio on a sunny July afternoon, he tells Rolling Stone that he produced “a lot” of the seminal Eric B and Rakim albums, which were in part created from a stash of loops that he would keep in tow to rap along to at park jams.

Even in the hyperbolic sphere of hip-hop, Rakim’s microphone supremacy can’t be overstated...

Kendrick Lamar Brings 25 L.A. Artists Together for Juneteenth Show, Playing Drake Diss Track “Not Like Us” Five Times
Image
Kendrick Lamar may have begun his set during Wednesday evening’s Ken & Friends – the Pop Out with a performance of “Euphoria”— one of multiple diss tracks the Compton lyricist has aimed at Drake amid their recent rap beef — but the focus of the Juneteenth event was to showcase unity among West Coast talent, more than two dozen of whom made an appearance at the concert.

“This is unity, y’all just don’t know man,” Lamar said as a group photo captured the more than 25 artists from across L.A. who performed at the show while instructing everybody on stage to say, “One West.”

“Everybody got fallen sons but we’re right here, right now celebrating all of them, this shit is special,” he added.

Image
Migos rapper Quavo’s quest to transform his nephew Takeoff’s tragic shooting into a force for change convened with a summit against gun violence on what would have been the late rapper’s 30th birthday.

Quavo held the inaugural Rocket Foundation Summit at the Carter Center in Atlanta on Tuesday — the same day as Takeoff’s birthday. The music performer was joined by Vice President Kamala Harris in a fireside chat during the one-day summit, which included panel discussions about gun violence prevention and youth programs.

For Quavo, it’s been a rough road since Takeoff’s untimely death in 2022. But many of his family members — including his nephew’s mother — often encourage him to keep pushing forward.

“It’s super hard every day. I’m still crying. I’m still grieving. I’m still mourning,” said Quavo, who along with his family launched the Rocket Foundation in honor...

While the rap world awaits Kendrick’s response to Drake, we’ve also been made to ponder technology’s role in societal decline. When the rap Gods declared “There are no rules in rap beef,” they likely weren’t imagining stan wars with hordes of X bot accounts feverishly posting sophomoric disses like “Daycares worldwide are being told to stay on high alert for Kendrick Lamar.”

As Tj and Jesse Mizell stroll through the Amsterdam Houses — the community of brick buildings for low-income households on Manhattan’s Upper West Side where they grew up — residents play basketball and stand around chatting. It’s an unusually sunny March day, and it feels good to be outside. One friendly older woman waves at the Mizells. “It’s been so long,” she shouts. “How are you? How is your mother?” The men, who moved from here to Los Angeles in 2018, wave back, grinning. All is well, they reassure her.

“Don’t Make TikToks About Dating Advice That May Later Embarrass You,” Says Emily Ratajkowski At Kérastase’s Power Talks
Image
At Paris’ Palais de Tokyo museum, Kérastase, the luxury hair and scalp care brand, hosted its second annual Power Talks on Tuesday. Drawing influencers and media from the U.S., Europe, the Balkans, and Asia, it was an event to help women gain confidence through active mentorship.

Through programming like this, Kérastase has been working to elevate women’s voices by reducing the confidence gap between men and women. According to a Kérastase global survey of more than 2,500 women in the U.S., China, Brazil and France, 74 percent of women think they lack confidence in their career-defining moments. Because of this, there are major gaps in how women view their ability, their work relationships and their future potential compared to men.

As guests arrived, they were guided to a large staircase with a giant inflatable letter K as the backdrop. The room was designed as an activation in itself with information about the brand,...

Startup Creator Platform Lockerverse Inks With CAA to Bolster Growth (Exclusive)
Image
Lockerverse — a startup platform for college and pro athletes, creators and artists to monetize their fanbases and offer exclusives by selling digital collectibles and merchandise — has linked up with CAA to represent it, a move that could hasten its access to sports talent.

The company was founded last year by attorneys Trey McDonald, James Carlos McFall and former Pinterest and LinkedIn executive Marcus Rance with an eye toward the name, image and likeness business for sports creators.

Lockerverse was launched with the halo of being part of Disney’s Accelerator program last July, which focused on startups in the non-fungible tokens (NFTs) and metaverse space. (This was pre-ChatGPT going public, when “metaverse” and not “artificial intelligence” was the buzzword of the moment. Other Disney accelerator companies in that class included Web3 social app Flickplay, blockchain network Polygon and augmented reality company Red 6.) Another app, FanZone, appears to be competing in...

Hip-Hop 50: Run-dmc, Slick Rick, Doug E. Fresh, Snoop Dogg, Nas, Lauryn Hill Perform at Yankee Stadium
Image
Returning to hip-hop’s birthplace, classic rappers who pioneered the sound — as well as those who have proudly carried the rap torch — joined forces to honor the genre’s 50th birthday and celebrate its historic and global impact on pop culture.

It was only fitting that a venue as iconic as Bronx’s Yankee Stadium became the home for the eight-hour celebration, which included three dozen performers and nearly 50,000 audience members.

The universal love for rap was at the center of the night, and rappers like Nas and Snoop Dogg owned the night while also honoring those who came before them.

During his set, Nas brought out hip-hop founding father DJ Kool Herc and told the crowd: “This is our love. This is our bloodline.” Herc, 68, earned a standing ovation and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this year. Kool G Rap also appeared onstage alongside Nas,...

The Creed III soundtrack is produced by J. Cole's Dreamville Records, known for utilizing strong underground artists, and features Morray, Headhunters, Ari Lennox, and J. Nipsey Hussle’s Killer Gets 60 Years To Life In Prison
Image
A Los Angeles judge on Wednesday sentenced the man convicted of gunning down Nipsey Hussle to 60 years to life in prison after hearing testaments to the immense cost of the killing of the hip-hop star and neighbourhood leader, and of the lifetime of mental illness, abuse and struggle of the man who shot him.

Superior Court Judge H. Clay Jacke II handed down the sentence to Eric R. Holder Jr., 33, who was found guilty of the 2019 first-degree murder of the 33-year-old Grammy-nominated hip-hop artist outside the clothing store Hussle founded, the Marathon, in the South Los Angeles neighbourhood where both men grew up in very similar circumstances.

“I am very mindful of what was presented as to Mr. Holder’ mental health,” Jacke said. “I am also mindful of the devastation caused to the victims and their families. I believe this sentence balances the two.”

Lauren London's Dating History Over the Years
Image
"You People" is the latest comedy to take over Netflix. The movie - which features the star-studded cast of Jonah Hill, Lauren London, Eddie Murphy, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus - is about a young couple named Amira and Ezra who want to get married but are hoping to get their parents' approval first. Since they come from two very different backgrounds, that's easier said than done.

If you've already watched the film, you probably recognize London from movies like "Atl," "I Love You, Beth Cooper," "This Christmas," and, more recently, "Without Remorse." Her TV credits also include shows like "The Game," "Games People Play," and "True Story."

Outside of her acting career, London prefers to keep her personal life private, though she has been in a few public relationships over the years. Since entering the spotlight in the early 2000s, she's dated some famous musicians, with her most recent relationship being with the late Nipsey Hussle.

Jimmy Kimmel Celebrates 20th Anniversary of Talk Show by Deepfaking Himself — Watch
Image
January 26 marked the 20th anniversary of “Jimmy Kimmel Live!,” marking the longest tenure of any current late-night host in the United States. To celebrate, ABC aired a special primetime episode of the series, featuring throwbacks to the show’s original 2003 premiere — including the complete guest lineup from the show’s very first episode, with George Clooney, Snoop Dogg, and Coldplay frontman Chris Martin all stopping by. But the most surprising throwback was an interview Kimmel did with a very familiar guest: himself.

During a segment on the 20th-anniversary special, Kimmel showed the audience a picture of him from back in 2003, during the first edition of the ABC series. However, the photo glitched, and the younger Kimmel came to life and began speaking to his older counterpart about the changes over the two decades, including the deaths of celebrities like Michael Jackson, the invention of electronic cigarettes, the legalization of weed,...

Netflix’s Interracial-Dating Romcom ‘You People’ Is Trying Way Too Hard
Image
There’s an alternate timeline where You People, the feature directorial debut of Kenya Barris (black-ish), is the next great romantic comedy. There’s another version where it’s a biting satire that delves into the strain parents can inflict on their grown children. There’s an even more distant option, where it’s a sharp critique on race relations that both entertains and tackles the hard truths around cancel culture, privilege and faith. While the film clearly wants to be all of those options, it ends up buckling under...

David Duchovny, Nia Long, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Eddie Murphy, Jonah Hill, and Lauren London in You People (2023)
‘You People’ Review: Kenya Barris and Jonah Hill’s Comedy Collab Mixes the Timely and the Outdated
David Duchovny, Nia Long, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Eddie Murphy, Jonah Hill, and Lauren London in You People (2023)
“You People,” Kenya Barris’ feature directorial debut for Netflix, is laden with good intentions: Collaborating with Jonah Hill as a co-writer and star for this new comedy makes sense when one considers that both men are Los Angeles natives celebrated for their comedic flair and also devotees of hip-hop culture. Add to that the reunion of co-stars Eddie Murphy and Julia Louis-Dreyfus, both comic giants who came up together on “SNL” in the 1980s, and expectations run high.

But good intentions aren’t enough to float what is essentially a hip-hop–tinged, LA-centric comedic update of “Guess Who’s Coming To Dinner.” It’s a concept that has seen a few iterations over the years — most notably 2005’s “Guess Who,” starring Bernie Mac, Ashton Kutcher, and Zoe Saldana — and “You People” also draws some inspiration from “Meet The Parents,” with faith-based differences providing most of the tension.

Hill stars as Ezra Cohen,...

On His New Single, Yvngxchris Pays Homage to XXXTentacion
Image
Today would have been XXXTentacion’s 25th birthday. The quarter-century mark is a milestone that too many artists don’t get to see due to the type of gun violence that XXX succumbed to on June 18th, 2018 (the same day that rapper Jimmy Wopo was shot and killed at age 21). The shooting was an abrupt end to the whirlwind life of one of the rap world’s most polarizing artists. The Florida-raised musician allegedly committed abuses that made him a reviled figure in many circles, but his legacy isn’t...

Nipsey Hussle Killer’s Bid to Reduce Murder Conviction Rejected by Judge
Image
A judge has rejected a request from Eric Holder Jr. — Nipsey Hussle’s convicted killer — to reduce his sentence from first-degree murder to second-degree murder or manslaughter. On Monday, Judge H. Clay Jacke denied a defense motion for a new trial, and scheduled Holder’s sentencing for Feb. 22.

Holder faces a potential term of life in prison. His attorney Aaron Jansen had asked for his client’s conviction to be changed to voluntary manslaughter due to an “inconsistent” verdict.

During the harrowing trial last summer, prosecutors argued that Holder committed...
