6 Filmmaking Tips from Ben Wheatley
Make a high rise in the industry (or on your own) with this advice.Ben Wheatley directing ‘High-Rise’

One of the most exciting filmmaking careers to watch right now is that of Ben Wheatley. He directed his first feature, 2009's Down Terrace, relatively late in life but has made up for it ever since. His latest, Free Fire, is his sixth movie in about eight years, and in that time he’s also directed music videos, episodes of Doctor Who, and shorts, including a bit for the anthology horror film The ABCs of Death.

His movies don’t lack in quality for being so many in quantity, either. Some are better than others, yet none of them has really been negatively reviewed, and he maintains a fanbase among the film geek crowd that almost gets to celebrate him annually at Fantastic Fest given his consistent output. Want to know how he does it? Below...

Olympic athletes at risk from London air pollution, artist's film shows
Faisal Abdu'Allah has worked with scientists, athletes and local residents to highlight the dangers of living and competing in the city

One of Britain's leading film artists has teamed up with scientists to show how polluted air in East London threatens athletes at next year's Games and shortens the lives of people living near the Olympic park.

Film and photography artist Faisal Abdu'Allah, who has exhibited at Tate Britain, the Serpentine and Stamford University in the United States, worked for more than one year with four of Britain's leading air quality experts, including Frank Kelly, professor of environmental health at King's College, London.

The film, called Double Pendulum, features athletes including Jeanette Kwakye, footballer Anthony Grant and martial artist Ammar Duffus, and 11 to 14-year-olds living near the Olympic Park.

"I was looking at how breathing is affected by pollution, how race impacts on how we breathe and how where we...

Potd: Declan is unsettled by his dad
Declan's dad Dermot arrives in the village for Christmas in tonight's episode of Emmerdale. The businessman's mischievous father turns up at Home Farm after receiving an invitation from Ella, but Declan is far from happy over the situation and appears to be unsettled by his presence. Later, as the tension becomes too much to bear, Declan tries to bribe Dermot to stay away. Will Dermot accept the offer, or will he be sticking around at the estate? Speaking in a recent interview with Digital Spy, Dermot's portrayer Frank Kelly explained: "While Declan is very businesslike, (more)...

Emmerdale Farm (1972)
Merrells: 'Declan isn't scared of curse'
Emmerdale Farm (1972)
Emmerdale star Jason Merrells has admitted that his character Declan Macey has no fears about owning Home Farm, despite the estate's supposed 'curse'. The village business has developed a poor reputation on screen after proving unlucky for a number of families over the years, including the Tate, King and Wylde clans. Last week, Declan ensured that Home Farm left the hands of the Wyldes as his ex-wife Ella (Corinne Wicks) bought their share of the estate. The former couple's daughter Mia (Sapphire Elia) and Declan's dad Dermot (Frank Kelly) will also become permanent fixtures at the business in the weeks ahead. Speaking of Home Farm's eventful history, Merrells told Soaplife: "A curse (more)...

Merrells: 'Home Farm tone will change'
harry livingstone
Jason Merrells has hinted that Emmerdale fans can expect Home Farm to be the setting for "funnier" scenes once his screen family take over the business. Earlier this year, it was announced that Merrells's character Declan Macey is to take charge of the estate, where he will soon be joined by dad Dermot (Frank Kelly), ex-wife Ella (Corrinne Wicks) and Ella's daughter Mia (Sapphire Elia). The new era for Home Farm comes as the remaining members of the Wylde clan prepare to depart the village in the weeks ahead. Speaking about what is in store over the coming months, Merrells commented: "There is a whole family being landed on me and the way that each of them arrives is quite interesting. "I (more)...

'Dales star reveals Macey split details
harry livingstone
Jason Merrells has revealed that Emmerdale's Declan Macey split from wife Ella because they were "geographically separate". Earlier this week, it was announced that Declan will gain control of the Home Farm estate and be joined in the ITV soap by his ex-wife Ella (Corrine Wicks), their daughter Mia (Sapphire Elia) and his father Dermot (Frank Kelly). Speaking to Digital Spy about the couple's divorce, Merrells said: "The way I imagine it is that we would have been geographically separate because of our businesses. "Drifted apart, not spoken, and because we are so driven, feisty and defensive, we probably played brinkmanship with each other over the divorce: 'Are you calling it?' 'No I'm calling it' (more)...

Newport Beach Confidential: Into Action
The past few days at the 2010 Newport Beach Film Festival have whirred by me. From the world premieres of "140" (Frank Kelly's innovative effort in outsourcing filmmaking to a global community via Twitter), "Cancer to Capricorn: Path of the Modern Gypsy," Joshua Pomer's "The Westsiders" and hip-hop outreach flick "Bouncing Cats" starring Rock Steady Crew's Crazy Legs, the Nbff has once again cemented its position at the forefront of action sports and alternative indie programming.

There are the usual successes from the fest circuit here at play, but the true measures of this festival are its art and architecture and its action sports series, which manage to find audiences at both ends of the demographics spectrum and leave them wanting more. And there have been nightly soirees at Fashion Island's various restaurants and retail outlets, at which I’ve experienced the requisite amounts of Absolut, Stella Artois, tacos and Häagen-Dazs.

A Film to Tweet About
140 people in 140 locations around the world, shoot 140 seconds of what connects them to their home. The result? A feature length documentary of poignant moments captured around the world at the same time.    This 80 minute piece is the Irish debut feature film, appropriately titled 140, from director Frank Kelly (pictured) and will showcase eight Aussies in its final cut.   The idea originated from social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter which pressure people to communicate in brief sentences, often without correct grammar or sentence structure.   Kelly's idea was to take the restriction of Twitter, which only allows users to send messages containing 140 characters, and enlist filmmakers around the world to tell their creative story in 140 seconds on June 21, 2009.

Kelly's '140' & 'Slán agus Beannacht' Premiere
'140', a feature length - twitter inspired – documentary, and 'Slan agus Beannacht', a dramatic short, both from director Frank Kelly (Emily's Song) are being screening for the first time this month. '140' was shot on 21 June this year, when 140 filmmakers in 140 different locations simultaneously shot 140 seconds of footage to demonstrate the connections between them and the places they call home. Frank tells Iftn the concept of the project presented itself when he realised he was becoming increasingly distracted by the blogging site, Twitter, and felt the need to incorporate it into his work to make his time spent on the site worthwhile.
