The project marks the second outing for Gille Kalbin as director following the release of sci-fi thriller The Wave, starring Justin Long. Klabin, Elliott, and Spencer McCurnin wrote the script, with Hero Moves and June Street Productions producing.

2023 Black List Includes Patsy Cline, Ftx and Tom Hanks Doppelganger Scripts
Image
The Black List has revealed its 2023 list of best unproduced screenplays, with scripts that include a biopic of country singer Patsy Cline, the rise and fall of Sam Bankman-Fried crypto empire Ftx, and an action-comedy about Tom Hanks and his doppelganger.

Topping this year’s list is a feature script from Travis Braun titled Bad Boy, with a logline that reads: “A rescue dog suspects his loving new owner is a serial killer.”

Elsewhere on the list is a screenplay about the Broadway playwright behind notorious disaster Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark from writer Hunter Toro, and a script focused on soccer star Didier Drogba from Jackson Kellard.

“This year, the industry was defined by a debate about the value of writers within it, and I think it’s inevitable that this year’s Black List means more than it has in the past,” said Black List founder and CEO Franklin Leonard.

Something in the Dirt teaser trailer: Justin Benson, Aaron Moorhead film gets November release
Image
Last year, we heard that the filmmaking duo of Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead were “returning to their DIY indie origins” with a new project called Something in the Dirt. Now a teaser trailer for Something in the Dirt has arrived online – and along with that comes the information that the movie is going to receive a theatrical release on November 4th!

Benson and Moorhead directed Something in the Dirt from a script written by Benson. The duo also produced the film and star in it… and the movie was actually filmed in their apartments during the pandemic shutdown. Here’s the story they’re telling with this one:

Two new neighbors witness what seems to be a supernatural event in one of their apartments. At first terrified, they realize that documenting this phenomenon could provide them the lives they’ve always dreamed of.

Benson and Moorhead are joined in...

Justin Long & ‘The Wave’ Director Discuss Bad Trips and Break Down Their Existential Thriller
Be aware there are spoilers for The Wave below. Justin Long takes a hallucinogenic trip down an existential rabbit hole in The Wave, the new psychedelic thriller from filmmaker Gille Klabin. Long stars as an insurance lawyer, Frank, who's a little too good at a very bad karma gig. Celebrating a new promotion, Frank heads out for a night on the town with his co-worker Jeff (Donald Faison) and winds up caught in a surprisingly wild and increasingly bizarre night when he meets a girl (Shiela Vand), does some drugs, and winds up skipping through time in a …...

Donald Faison and Justin Long in The Wave (2019)
‘The Wave’: Film Review
Donald Faison and Justin Long in The Wave (2019)
A sort of “After Hours” update with a lot more drugs and time ellipses, “The Wave” throws Justin Long down a rabbit’s hole of sometimes hallucinatory, sometimes mortal peril when his button-down protagonist makes the mistake of celebrating a career breakthrough a little too adventurously. This surreal comedy from debuting feature director Gille Klabin and writer Carl W. Lucas offers a colorfully diverting ride that invokes the specter of everything from “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas” to “It’s a Wonderful Life.”

What it doesn’t quite have is the singularity of vision those and other movies had in putting their protagonists through some mind-expanding changes, whether induced psychedelically or supernaturally. This fever dream feels more derivative than distinctive, entertaining and eventful as it is. Still, it’s a well-cast, well-crafted stab at something offbeat that should find a modest but appreciative viewership in limited theatrical release (simultaneous with VOD launch) on Jan.

‘The Wave’ Film Review: Justin Long Stoner Comedy Not a Wave Worth Riding
Justin Long
Let’s give Justin Long some overdue credit: few everyman actors actively choose to push the edges of their beta-dude personas. There’s always a need for ordinary guys in rom-coms and sitcoms, and Long could easily coast through them.

As often as not, though, he embraces eccentric efforts that remain under the radar, and surely don’t include a mainstream paycheck. Sometimes these risks are so bananas they become unforgettable, like 2014’s “Tusk,” in which Kevin Smith turned Long into a walrus. And sometimes, inevitably, they’re “The Wave.”

Even here, generous viewers might appreciate Long’s commitment to the unusual and unexpected. Through no fault of his, however, they will find both their loyalty and their patience considerably tested.

The Wave Review: Justin Long Has a Hallucinogenic Nightmare of an Adventure
The first thing you need to know when entering director Gille Klabin and writer Carl W. Lucas’ The Wave is that it takes a lot of liberties. The second thing is that doing so doesn’t have to be a problem. So much of what happens on-screen is born from convenience and ultimately has no explanation (if it even needs one) before playing its long-term role within Frank’s (Justin Long) hallucinogenic nightmare of an adventure. Just because he might get a handle on what’s happening to manipulate the experience to his benefit (or at least his will) doesn’t mean he (or we) understand how beyond the notion that the implausible isn’t necessarily impossible when a creative strain of karmic retribution proves to be the goal. The sky’s the limit.

You wouldn’t think as much from the start considering Frank is nothing if not a...

Donald Faison and Justin Long in The Wave (2019)
The Wave Trailer Has Justin Long Caught in a Psychedelic Sci-Fi Head Trip
Donald Faison and Justin Long in The Wave (2019)
The Wave trailer puts Justin Long in one very trippy dream sequence. The sci-fi thriller, which has also been billed as horror, premiered back in September at Fantastic Fest. "Have you ever woken up from a dream so real that for a moment you can't remember where you are?" Justin Long asks at the start of trailer. "This is a lot like that." And from there, we're off to some mind melting visuals paired with some thrills where Long's character can't seem to separate reality from a dream.

The Wave focuses on Frank (Justin Long), a bored corporate lawyer, who decides to shake it up with a wild night out. In the process, he takes a mysterious drug that launches him into a mind-bending time travel adventure. The movie has been compared to Looper, Groundhog's Day, and Dude, Where's My Car? Those are three pretty random movies, but the trailer...

‘The Wave’ Team on Time Travel, the Balance of the Universe, and Being Inspired by ‘Spring Breakers’
When we look to the stars, and wonder about our purpose on Earth, we probably ask the same things: “Why are we here? What is it all about? Is there more to the day-in, day-out routine:? Well, I’m sorry to say that I can’t answer that for you. However, director Gille Klabin and writer/producer Carl Lucas try their best to provide answers to those nebulous questions.

But how can they do that which Stephen Hawking and Carl Sagan couldn’t? Easy: they use time-travel and drugs. What a concept! In all seriousness, The Wave is a simple story about one man trying to find his place in the world and if you just pay attention to the signs, you’ll see that the universe does have a plan for you.

In the film, Frank (Justin Long), a bored corporate lawyer, decides to shake it up with a wild night out.

Fantastic Fest 2019 Interview: Director Gille Klabin, Writer Carl Lucas and Co-Star Justin Long on Psychedelics and the Unique Visual Style for The Wave
One of the more surprising films at Fantastic Fest that this writer encountered was Gille Klabin’s The Wave, which follows a corporate lawyer (played by Justin Long) who is tasked with finding loopholes in the insurance policies of the deceased, a soulless job that has left him feeling empty and looking for something more out of life. One night, he heads out for a night of partying with his pal (Donald Faison) and ends up ingesting a mysterious drug that transforms his life in unimaginable ways, setting him on a personal journey of discovery.

Director Klabin relies on his own unique and strong visual style as a means to make The Wave a standout effort all-around, which is why Daily Dead was excited to speak with the first-time feature filmmaker, with Long and The Wave’s writer Carl Lucas joining in on the conversation. The trio discussed the real-life inspirations behind the story,...

‘The Wave’ Review: Justin Long Takes One Strange Trip [Fantastic Fest 2019]
On the set of The Wave
Gille Klabin‘s The Wave starts off seeming like the most annoying bro comedy in recent memory – but don’t be deterred. It’s ultimately a story about coming to terms with your […]
