The staff of St. Denis Medical have had their much-needed rest, and now they're getting ready to resume work as Season 2 has received a premiere date. The medical mockumentary first aired on NBC in late 2024 and quickly won over audiences and critics, cementing itself as a breakout hit. Created by comedy veterans Justin Spitzer and Eric Ledgin, the team behind Superstore and American Auto, the show brought their signature workplace humor to the world of healthcare. St. Denis Medical delivered another acclaimed entry in their comedy portfolio and ultimately escaped the wave of cancellations that struck the network early in the year. The show scored an early renewal even before its first season finished airing, and it will return alongside fellow comedy Happy’s Placein the network’s fall lineup.

Months before NBC’s Oregon-set medical series concluded its debut season, it was renewed for another run, which launches this fall. St. Denis Medicalreturns this November after getting a Season 2 order in January 2025, and, as expected, fans have been dying to know what’s next for Joyce and the overworked team. Justin Spitzer and Eric Ledgincreated the series, which instantly became a favorite among fans and critics alike, as reflected in its 75% and 80% fresh Rotten Tomatoes ratings, respectively.
With the sophomore season of St. Denis Medical a few months away, Ledgin has newly revealed his plans to tell “a couple of out-of-the-hospital stories” that couldn’t fit into Season 1 due to either the budget or the team’s will. The showrunner shared this interesting detail with TVLine, noting that among the upcoming episodes that take place outside the walls of St. Denis, one will follow the docs to a medical conference.

“St. Denis Medical” has been one of the freshest, funniest new comedies of the 2024-2025 TV season, and its co-creators and cast know why: It’s deeply rooted in truth. Creator, showrunner, and writer Eric Ledgin even did his own research to find out if hospital staff really do have sex in the on-call rooms, as shown on so many TV medical dramas.
Ledgin was joined by co-creator and writer Justin Spitzer and actors Wendi McLendon-Covey, Allison Tolman, Josh Lawson, Mekki Leeper, and Kaliko Kauahi for an IndieWire Consider This Live Event moderated by actress D’Arcy Carden at Vidiots Foundation in Los Angeles’s Eagle Rock neighborhood on May 29. This was an official TV Academy FYC event.
Watch the full panel above.
The theme of the evening kept coming back to truth. In fact, the very idea for the show came from some real-life experiences Ledgin had over the years.

“It would feel stupid to walk away and do something that’s less joyful,” expresses Eric Ledgin about why he has built his career around television comedy. The writer, who is one of the two creators of the NBC mockumentary series St. Denis Medical alongside Justin Spitzer, initially wanted to “make movies that are important,” but got “pushed into comedy by a friend.” He now revels in the format because “half hour gives you limitless opportunities to do whatever you want.” The creative duo recently sat down with Gold Derby to discuss the origins of the hospital-set series, their favorite episodes from the first season, and more.
St. Denis Medical boasts a unique tone. It is a comedic mockumentary about the doctors, nurses, and administrative staff at a regional hospital in Oregon, but it also often includes moments of true stakes and dramatic heft. “It’s a comedy and it’s comedy forward,...

The acclaimed medical drama starring Zachary Quinto recently concluded its first season earlier this month.
It’s a wrap on the first season of NBC’s “Brilliant Minds,” its brainy new medical drama starring Zachary Quinto, which following a brief December hiatus recently aired its two-episode finale. Inspired by the works of Oliver Sacks, “Brilliant Minds” stars Quinto in his first main live-action TV series role since “Nosferatu” by another name, AMC’s “NOS4A2.”
The “Star Trek” star plays Dr. Oliver Wolf, an eccentric and gifted neurologist with facial blindness whose condition gives him a unique perspective on care. Alongside his brilliant team of interns at Bronx General and through unconventional methods, he takes on some of the world’s most puzzling psychological and neurological cases.
It’s still uncertain if there will be a second season of “Brilliant Minds,” but the first season of the series has been a hit for the network.

St. Denis Medical broke through in a big way when it debuted on NBC in the fall, and the network issued some exciting news on Tuesday morning:
St. Denis Medical Season 2 is a go.
The mockumentary is NBC’s first scripted renewal for the 2025-26 TV season. Make of that what you will.
(NBC)
The freshman drama averages just under 4 million viewers and has a 0.5 rating in the demo, proving that the broadcast networks still have some life left.
NBC teases that the series has reached 21.4 million viewers to date, which is astounding, but it doesn’t hold much water when the network doesn’t break it down.
The Live + 7 numbers are enough to keep it on the air for several years.

The medical drama has been popular for a long time. Several of network TV's longest-running procedural series have been in the medical genre. This includes ER, and an Emmy-winning series that ran from 1994 to 2009. Overlapping partially with this time frame was Grey's Anatomy, which began in 2005. Grey's has dominated television ever since, even prompting the spinoff series Station 19. Grey's Anatomy season 21 is in its mid-season break right now, and will return in March.
While long-standing medical dramas like these have fascinated audiences, it can be even more interesting when new shows come in to shake things up in this genre. Last year, for example, saw the release of Doctor Odyssey. The Ryan Murphy-created show took a more comedic approach to the medical procedural, taking place on a luxury cruise ship with a bumbling lead who clashes with his staff. This was met with mixed results, as Doctor Odyssey...

St. Denis Medical has certainly seen a lot six episodes into its freshman run on NBC, but the next one could be the most chaotic yet. Ahead of the episode's airing, Cbr can unveil an exclusive sneak peek at the cold open, teasing the madness that happens when inmates arrive for treatment from a nearby prison.
The episode, titled "50 cc's of Kindness," is set to air on Tuesday, Jan. 14, at 8 p.m. on NBC. In the sneak peek clip, Joyce (Wendi McLendon-Covey), Ron (David Alan Grier), and Alex (Allison Toman) attempt to take control with treating two prisoners who've been rushed in after an apparently violent incident took place at the prison. Of course, as also teased in the cold open, the inmates use much more "colorful" language than the patients that the medical staff are typically tending to. Check out the clip below.

NBC and Peacock's new sitcom St. Denis Medical is a mockumentary workplace comedy set in an underfunded Oregon hospital and is sure to cure your woes, at least according to critics. It avoids the tropes of other medical shows that tend to focus on flashy doctors and major crises, instead primarily focusing on nurses — the unsung heroes that keep the hospital running.
A perfectly cast Allison Tolman (Fargo) stars as a workaholic supervising nurse and mom who keeps the ER running; Wendi McLendon-Covey (a familiar face to fans of The Goldbergs and Reno 911!) plays the administrative bigwig who's focused more on accolades than patient care; and David Alan Grier takes on the role of a curmudgeonly doctor. Kahyun Kim, Josh Lawson, Kaliko Kauahi, and Mekki Leeper fill out the rest of the archetypes, including a nurse with a wild streak, a self-idolizing surgeon, and a Montana transplant with a strict...

Spoiler alert: The following article contains spoilers from St. Denis Medical season 1, episode 6, "Ho-Ho-Hollo."
Abbott Elementary revived the mockumentary sitcom genre in 2021, resulting in St. Denis Medical in 2024, and allowing the newer show to emulate one of the older series' storylines (but with its own twist). The NBC medical comedy, co-created by Justin Spitzer of Superstore fame and Eric Ledgin, follows the doctors and nurses at St. Denis Medical Center in Oregon. Similar to other mockumentary sitcoms, the St. Denis Medical characters are eccentric, unique, and hilarious, forming a group with great chemistry. The series takes advantage of its cast's dynamics, just like Abbott Elementary does.
New episodes of St. Denis Medical air on Tuesdays at 8 pm Et on NBC — season 1 returns with episode 7, "50 Cc's of Kindness," on January 14, 2025.
The cast of St. Denis Medical includes Wendi McLendon-Covey as Joyce, Allison Tolman as Alex, Josh Lawson as Bruce, Kahyun Kim as Serena,...

Co-created by Eric Ledgin and Justin Spitzer, St. Denis Medical is taking a brief hiatus after airing its holiday episode, "Ho-Ho-Hollo." The series will return with season 1, episode 7 on Tuesday, January 14 at 8 p.m. Et. NBC's medical sitcom follows "an eclectic team of underfunded yet dedicated doctors, nurses and hospital staff, who want nothing more than to turn the hospital into an international medical destination." However, not everyone in the series shares the same approach to care.
Among the bunch is Bruce, a talented trauma surgeon whose lack of awareness often makes him appear harsh. Josh Lawson (Superstore), who plays the character, admits that his attitude does put him at risk of being too mean. It was important to the actor to make it known that Bruce never intends to hurt others, as his actions come from a place of ignorance rather than cruelty.

If anyone knows the potency of good sitcom chemistry, it’s probably Eric Ledgin.
The writer and producer who co-created NBC’s “St. Denis Medical” has been involved with “Superstore,” “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia,” “Rutherford Falls,” and recently “American Auto” — and he knows how to get an audience on his side. Sometimes it only takes a pilot, but sometimes it takes several episodes or a full season to invest in a new workplace comedy, like the hospital mockumentary which premiered in November.
The core cast includes a “Superstore” mainstay (Kaliko Kauahi), familiar TV faces, comedy legends (David Alan Greer and Wendi McLendon Covey), and a fresh face from the film world (Kahyun Kim). Viewers get to know them little-by-little, but the actors gel enough to be a driving narrative force — a welcome result for a casting process that Ledgin told IndieWire “almost killed me.” Even with talented performers coming...

Warning: this article contains Spoilers for St. Denis Medical season 1, episode 5.St. Denis Medical has proven itself to be a comedic powerhouse, but episode 5 (“A Peanut and Caramel-Filled Miracle”) reveals the serious setting underlying the sitcom. Mekki Leeper’s Matt is the bumbling rookie of St. Denis Medical’s cast of characters, but episode 5 confronts Matt with the harsh reality of working as a healthcare professional. After performing CPR on a man who eventually survives, Matt fixates on the patient and routinely visits him and his family in hopes of thanks. NBC’s medical workplace mockumentary instead forces him to face an ugly truth: nursing can be a thankless job.
St. Denis Medical goes beyond the patient neglecting to thank Matt, however. After Val’s (Kaliko Kauahi) advice to forget about it goes ignored, Matt has a chance encounter with the patient after he’s discharged, picking up his sweatshirt...
