Creator, showrunner, and writer Eric Ledgin even did his own research to find out if hospital staff really do have sex in the on-call rooms, as shown on so many TV medical dramas.

NBC’s medical version of The Office, St. Denis Medical has been officially renewed for a second season. The half-hour mockumentary is set in a hospital and follows administrators, doctors, and nurses as they talk to the camera about their day.

The renewal isn’t a surprise given that the comedy is NBC’s top new show of the 2024-2025 season among the coveted 18-49 age group. The network reports that 21.4 million viewers have tuned in to the workplace comedy. Additionally, it earned two Critics Choice Awards nominations: Best Comedy Series and Best Actor in a Comedy Series (David Alan Grier).

The medical drama has been popular for a long time. Several of network TV's longest-running procedural series have been in the medical genre. This includes ER, and an Emmy-winning series that ran from 1994 to 2009. Overlapping partially with this time frame was Grey's Anatomy, which began in 2005. Grey's has dominated television ever since, even prompting the spinoff series Station 19. Grey's Anatomy season 21 is in its mid-season break right now, and will return in March.

While long-standing medical dramas like these have fascinated audiences, it can be even more interesting when new shows come in to shake things up in this genre. Abbott Elementary revived the mockumentary sitcom genre in 2021, resulting in St. Denis Medical in 2024, and allowing the newer show to emulate one of the older series' storylines (but with its own twist). The NBC medical comedy, co-created by Justin Spitzer of Superstore fame and Eric Ledgin, follows the doctors and nurses at St. Denis Medical Center in Oregon. Similar to other mockumentary sitcoms, the St. Denis Medical characters are eccentric, unique, and hilarious, forming a group with great chemistry. The series takes advantage of its cast's dynamics, just like Abbott Elementary does.

Among the bunch is Bruce, a talented trauma surgeon whose lack of awareness often makes him appear harsh. Josh Lawson (Superstore), who plays the character, admits that his attitude does put him at risk of being too mean. It was important to the actor to make it known that Bruce never intends to hurt others, as his actions come from a place of ignorance rather than cruelty.

If anyone knows the potency of good sitcom chemistry, it’s probably Eric Ledgin.

The writer and producer who co-created NBC’s “St. Denis Medical” has been involved with “Superstore,” “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia,” “Rutherford Falls,” and recently “American Auto” — and he knows how to get an audience on his side.
