'Hacks' Renewed for Season 5 at Max
Image
Jean Smart's Deborah Vance and Hannah Einbinder's Ava Daniels are getting another spin in the spotlight, as Hackshas officially been renewed for a fifth season at Max (soon to be HBO Max again). The critically acclaimed dark comedy series with 98% on Rotten Tomatoes is set to air its Season 4 finale on May 29, and now fans can rest easy knowing that the story will continue beyond the potential cliffhanger that the tenth and final episode will leave them on — with a new season likely to arrive in 2026, if the current release schedule is anything to go by.

Hacks follows the rollercoaster professional relationship between Vance, a veteran stand-up comedian, and Daniels, a down-on-her-luck comedy writer who works for her. The fourth season, which debuted on Max on Apr. 10, tossed the odd-couple pairing into another messy situation, picking up after the shock events of Season 3 when Daniels blackmailed her boss...

‘Hacks’ Renewed for Fifth Season at Max
Image
Hacks is entering the record books at Max.

The streamer has renewed the series for a fifth season, which will make Hacks the longest-running live-action show in Max’s (admittedly not very long) history. Series creators and showrunnners Paul W. Downs, Lucia Aniello and Jen Statsky announced the renewal Tuesday evening at an Emmy FYC screening in Los Angeles.

The pickup for the Emmy-winning comedy from Universal Television comes two days before its fourth season finale. The current season has seen Deborah Vance (Jean Smart) realize her dream of hosting a late-night talk show — though with more strings attached than she would like — with Ava Daniels (Hannah Einbinder) as her head writer.

Hacks premiered in May 2021, when the streaming service where it runs was known as HBO Max. It has continued since the platform changed its name to Max in April 2023 — and with the renewal, season five will stream on...

But we don’t take for granted how fortunate we are to get to do it. We were really excited because we’ve always known where we want the story to conclude, and so to be able to continue to build towards that is so satisfying.”

It’s no surprise that Max renewed “Hacks.” So far, the comedy has been nominated for 48 Primetime Emmys. The series...

Ava vs. Deborah is on! Hacks season 4 release time, preview, and more
Image
The reigning queens of comedy are finally back with a new season full of biting one-liners, unexpected twists, and a feud so good Ryan Murphy could turn it into a limited series. It's time to get ready for the Hacks season 4 premiere on Thursday April 10, which arrives with two episodes to kick off the season.

When we last left Deborah (Jean Smart) and Ava (Hannah Einbinder) in the season 3 finale, Ava was expertly maneuvering her checkmate on Deborah in order to score the head writer position on her new late night show. Deborah had otherwise promised Ava the job then walked back on the offer, but Ava held a particular piece of scandalous blackmail over her head to put her boss in a position where she couldn't say no again.

‘Hacks’ Season 4 Drops Blackmail-Filled Trailer Ahead of April Premiere
Image
“Hacks” Season 4 is picking up right where Season 3 left off: with Deborah and Ava on the edge of war. The latest installment of the Emmy-winning Max original comedy will premiere with its first two episodes on April 10.

“Well aren’t you a big, brave girl,” Deborah (Jean Smart) menacingly says in the new trailer out Tuesday, rounding on her prodigy.

“I guess I am,” Ava (Hannah Einbinder) replies. “It’s for the best.”

The clip then cuts between several high-energy scenes, from Deborah dancing in a club to both Deborah and Ava driving literal race cars. Kaitlin Olson’s very pregnant DJ can even be seen briefly weightlifting.

“Blackmail on day one? Not good!” Deborah and Ava’s manager Jimmy (Paul W. Downs) yells. “She’s been doing this for 50 years. You’re not going to beat her at her own game. Nobody beats Deborah.” Maybe, not yet.

The 10-episode season of the Emmy-winning comedy debuts with two episodes, then one episode a week for four weeks. Episodes seven and eight debut together on May 15, followed by episode nine on May 22. The season finale debuts on May 29.

Julianne Nicholson, Michaela Watkins and Eric Balfour Among ‘Hacks’ Season 4 Guest Stars
Image
Hacks is beefing up the ranks before its imminent return. The Emmy-winning Max comedy announced Tuesday the addition of 13 new guest stars planned for the fourth season — including those populating the writers room on Deborah Vance’s (Jean Smart) new late-night talk show.

Toplining the new faces are Julianne Nicholson, Michaela Watkins, Bresha Webb, Robby Hoffman and Eric Balfour, while Danny Jolles, Gavin Matts, Grover Whitmore, III, Holmes, Jasmine Ashanti, Katy Sullivan, Matt Oberg and Sandy Honig will guest as the Deborah’s new writers — all of whom will presumably report to Hannah Einbinder’s Ava.

In the season three finale, Ava blackmailed Deborah into giving her the head writer gig on her new show. The season four logline doesn’t give much, saying only “tensions rise as Deborah and Ava endeavor to get their late night show off the ground and make history doing it.” Tensions indeed…

Heels, Blindspotting & More Canceled by Starz, The Venery of Samantha Bird Scrapped
Image
Starz has decided to cancel its original shows Heels, Run the World, and Blindspotting, along with the yet-to-premiere series The Venery of Samantha Bird. Heels is a drama about two wrestling brothers dealing with their complicated relationship after their father's death. Run the World is a comedy following a group of women in Harlem, while Blindspotting is a spinoff/sequel to the 2018 film and focuses on a man's partner after his imprisonment.

Despite the apparent end of the writers strike, which will launch a long list of productions that were halted, Starz has decided to cancel some of its original shows. Including the popular drama starring Stephen Amell, Heels. Just months after the premiere of the second seasons of Heels, Run the World, and Blindspotting, Starz has decided not to continue with any of the series for a third installment. Heels takes the three count and gets canceled by Starz along with Run the World and Blindspotting
Image
The premium cable movie channel Starz has reportedly canceled three of their shows plus one upcoming project, according to Deadline. Starz will no longer be continuing the run of the wrestling drama Heels, as well as Run the World and Blindspotting. In addition, the channel has also decided not to proceed with The Venery of Samantha Bird. Heels, Run the World and Blindspotting have all completed two seasons, but The Venery of Samantha Bird was in the middle of production when the show paused for the strikes. Two episodes were left to film in the season.

Heels was produced by Lionsgate and Paramount Network Television and the plot, per Deadline, “revolves around the men and women who chase their dreams in the world of small-town pro wrestling. Set in a close-knit Georgia community, it follows a family-owned wrestling promotion as two brothers and rivals (Stephen Amell and Alexander Ludwig) war...

Heels, Blindspotting Among Wave of Cancellations at Starz
Rafael Casal and Daveed Diggs in Blindspotting (2018)
There are some big changes at Starz, and it's bad news for four shows.

Variety reported Monday evening that the premium cabler has canceled Heels, Run the World, and Blindspotting and is scrapping The Venery of Samantha Bird ahead of its premiere.

Heels, Run the World, and Blindspotting lasted for two seasons on the premium cabler, but it seems that the trio didn't have enough interest to sustain additional seasons.

The highest profile of the three shows was Heels, which starred Stephen Amell as Jack Spade, a man who inherited the league from his father.

However, he struggled to keep things running well, leading to plenty of drama across the two seasons.

The cast also included Alexander Ludwig, Chris Bauer, Mary McCormack, Kelli Berglund, Allen Maldonado, and Trey Tucker.

Rounding out the cast were Robby Ramos, Alice Barrett Mitchell, Roxton Garcia, David James Elliott, Joel Murray, and Cm Punk.
