How ‘Survival of the Thickest,’ ‘Mo’ and ‘Shrinking’ Are Helping Destigmatize Therapy for Men of Color
Image
When The Sopranos debuted in 1999, the series moved the cultural needle in innumerable ways — not least with its depiction of a hypermasculine man in a therapist’s office.

Over six seasons, the series featured eponymous mobster Tony Soprano’s regular visits with Dr. Jennifer Melfi — a subplot so socially impactful that actress Lorraine Bracco was once honored by the American Psychoanalytical Association.

In the decades since the HBO series challenged white men’s historical aversion to the therapist’s couch, men of color have remained largely absent from that needle-shift. Shows like Atlanta and This Is Us are among the few hits in the past quarter century in which a man of color visited a therapist.

But at least three series this season — Netflix’s Survival of the Thickest and Mo, and Apple TV+’s Shrinking — have devoted significant time to unpacking men of color’s complicated history with psychotherapy.

Michael J. Fox will make his first acting appearance in several years with a role in season three of Shrinking.

The five-time Emmy winner will guest star in the Apple TV+ comedy; details of his role are being kept under wraps. Season three of Shrinking is currently in production.

Fox’s last on-camera acting role was in The Good Fight in 2020, reprising his Emmy-nominated role as attorney Louis Canning. In Shrinking, Harrison Ford’s character, Paul Rhoades, was diagnosed with Parkinson’s during season one.

Fox’s Shrinking appearance will be a reunion for him and co-creator Bill Lawrence. The two worked together on ABC’s Spin City (Lawrence’s first series as a creator), and Fox also guest-starred on Scrubs.

Details of how Jimmy’s dad enters the show are being kept quiet for now. Season two ended with Jimmy forgiving the drunk driver (Goldstein) who caused the accident that left him widowed — and himself for how he had previously handled his relationship with his daughter, Alice (Lukita Maxwell).

“You want Jimmy to get to the point where he would leave it all behind for Alice, including his therapy practice and all that,” Segel told The Hollywood Reporter when season two concluded. “I think that’s what makes it the primary relationship.

Jacob Bertrand Would Do a 'Cobra Kai' Spinoff on One Condition
Image
That's a wrap on Cobra Kai, but the spirit and characters of the franchise — which date back to Ralph Macchio's iconic 1984 film, of course — will live on. First, there's the highly anticipated film Karate Kid: Legends, hitting the masses on May 30. Plus, there's talk of a spinoff series featuring a couple of the teens from Cobra Kai. Maybe one of your favorites from the ragtag bunch was Eli Moskowitz, otherwise known as "Hawk" due to his trademark mohawks that immediately stole whichever scene his character occupied. Hawk was played with style, ferocity, and pizzazz by rising star Jacob Bertrand, and MovieWeb recently caught up with him to see if he'd ever welcome the opportunity to further pursue his beloved character in a future project.

"If they were to do a spinoff, I mean, for Hawk, it would probably be a binary brothers thing, and I'm so down to work with Gianni [DeCenzo] again,...

'Cobra Kai's Martin Kove Says John Kreese Could Have Lived in Alternate Ending
Image
Martin Kove's iconic character, John Kreese, stole the show in Cobra KaiSeason 6's emotionally charged 13th episode, "Skeletons." After over 40 years of waiting, Karate Kidfans got to witness the often despicable Kreese finally finding redemption for the unspeakable wrongs he did to his star student, Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka). Unfortunately, after turning back over the Cobra Kai dojo to Johnny, it appears that Kreese was killed in an explosion while battling Terry Silver (Thomas Ian Griffith). However, there was an alternate ending filmed in which Kreese miraculously escaped the flames engulfing Silver's destroyed yacht. Kove said in an interview with People:

"A lot of the fans think that the character, he should have come out of the water and survived. We did shoot a scene like that. We did shoot a scene where I'm smoking the cigar [the character’s trademark vice], and I grab a magazine. It implies in Episode 15 that he didn't die,...

Cobra Kai may have closed its doors last month, but that doesn’t mean the story is quite over yet for the Karate Kid franchise. 'Cobra Kai' Showrunner Offers More Details About the Hilary Swank Cameo That Never Happened
Image
Cobra Kai’s showrunner Jon Hurwitz has addressed the cameo, or lack thereof, of Hilary Swank's character in the series finale. Swank played Julie Pierce in The Next Karate Kid, the fourth movie in the Karate Kid franchise and Pat Morita's last appearance as Mr. Miyagi. The film's reception was not good, and it ended up burying the franchise until the 2010 reboot. Although the showrunners and writers found a way to bring back almost every single character, even those played by late actors, Swank was one of the biggest legacy characters who wasn't present in the show. And we finally know the reason why.

The Netflix TV spin-off of the Karate Kid franchise concluded its six-season run as a funny and nostalgic series that expanded on the cultural landmark that made everyone start karate classes in the 1980s. The series used everything, from needle drops to nods to Easter eggs,...

'Cobra Kai' Creators Reveal If 'Back to the Future' Easter Egg Was a Spin-off Tease: "We’d Be All-in"
Image
Great Scott! The creators behind Cobra Kai have addressed the intriguing tease at the end of the show. Last week, Netflix released all the final Cobra Kai episodes, ending the Karate Kid spin-off's six-season run. If you stayed with Johnny and Daniel until the very end, when Johnny taught Daniel that chopsticks are not always necessary for catching flies, then you were probably confused by what happened just before that. Yes, we're talking about the unusual conversation between two strangers who we heard discussing something that had nothing to do with Cobra Kai.

The conversation is between Josh Heald and Jon Hurwitz, two of the three Cobra Kai co-creators. One says, "So the show would be set in Hill Valley, alternate 1985. All we need are Wilson, Thompson and Zane, and we’ve got the green light." Hill Valley is, of course, the fictional town where the Back to the Futurefranchise takes place,...

The following contains spoilers forCobra KaiSeaon 6, Episode 15, "Ex-Degenerate."

Cobra Kai has been a massive hit with Karate Kid fans since its debut in 2018. Now that the series has ended, creators Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz, and Hayden Schlossberg, may have already laid the groundwork for another franchise revival.

The final scene of Cobra Kaisees Daniel Larusso (Ralph Macchio) and Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka) sort of recreate the "catching a fly with chopsticks" scene from the original 1984 movie. However, per People, the conversation between the gentlemen at the bar in the moments prior is where Heald and Hurwitz discuss the possibility of doing a Back to the Future series. The chat in the throwaway scene was essentially a pitch for a Back to the Future revival.

Cobra Kai ended its six-season run by permanently dissolving the rivalry between Daniel Larusso (Ralph Macchio) and Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka). The series also got rid of its Karate Kid villains in the most dramatic way possible.

'Cobra Kai' Creator Explains Why Hilary Swank Did Not Reprise Her 'Karate Kid' Role

Cobra Kaihas officially ended, and while many characters from the Karate Kid franchise returned at some point, there was one that was strangely absent: Julie Pierce from The Next Karate Kid, played by Oscar-winner Hilary Swank. Image
Quick LinksA Recap of Kreese and Silver in 'Cobra Kai'Kreese and Silver’s Final Moves in 'Cobra Kai'Kreese & Silver’s Journeys up to 'Cobra Kai' Season 6

Through its entire six-season run, Cobra Kai has always been about villains. At its core, the question fans had to ask is whether Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka) was/is the real villain or Daniel Larusso (Ralph Macchio). The story expanded to include a new generation of kids, initially centered around Miguel (Xolo Mariduena), a young student dealing with bullies much like Daniel did, along with new bullies turned good kids like Tory (Peyton List), Robby (Tanner Buchanan), and Kenny (Dallas Dupree Young).

Of course, what would a show like Cobra Kai, which reopens wounds from The Karate Kid more than 30 years ago, be without some of its original villains? Two who returned to reprise their roles from the original franchise films definitely won’t be returning.

'Cobra Kai' Resolves a 30-Year-Old 'Karate Kid' Storyline
Image
The Karate Kid first premiered way back in 1984. While many have largely forgotten about the details of the film and the characters, the launch of Cobra Kai brought everything right back into focus. Set in the present day, Cobra Kai focuses on a new group of karate students. But it’s also about the reunion between Daniel Larusso (Ralph Macchio) and Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka), bitter high school and karate rivals.

While The Karate Kid always painted Johnny as the bully and Daniel as the victim, Cobra Kai flips the script and shows another side of the equation. Johnny had a tough life. He had a tyrant for a sensei when he was a teenager. And the result of the All-Valley Tournament changed the trajectory of his life for the worse. In the last batch of episodes for Cobra Kai’s final season, there’s finally closure for one of...

'Cobra Kai' Sticks the Landing With Season 6 Part 3 Streaming Success for 'The Karate Kid' Franchise
Image
Entries on Netflix’s streaming chart have taken a good kicking as Cobra Kai unleashed its final run of episodes, bringing the series to a close in a high-kicking blaze of glory. While the show has had its ups and downs across its six seasons, the final five episodes have reminded many of why it has been such an incredible success for Netflix and has prepared them for the next chapter in the Karate Kid franchise coming in this year’s new movie sequel.

Cobra Kai first broke ground on YouTube Red by shifting the Karate Kid spotlight onto Johnny Lawrence, played by William Zabka, and picked up his story decades after that infamous loss at the 1984 All Valley Karate Tournament. Pivoting from being a straight-up villain, Johnny underwent a journey of regret, redemption, and ultimately became a more fleshed out character that viewers were able to relate to.

Image
Warning: This article contains spoilers for Cobra Kai Season 6 Pt. 3

Cobra Kai just dropped its final five episodes, but that doesn't mean it is the end for the franchise, as two fan-favorite characters might get a spin-off. While Cobra Kai was initially conceived as a legacy sequel to The Karate Kid with the big marketing hook bringing back original stars William Zabka and Ralph Macchio, the series introduced a whole new batch of new characters that quickly became fan-favorites. Miguel Diaz, Samantha Larusso, Robby Keene, and Tory Nichols are just a few fan-favorite characters, and it looks like two characters introduced in Season 1 might have a spin-off in the works.

While speaking with Entertainment Weekly about the final episodes of Cobra Kai, creators Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz, and Hayden Schlossberg answered questions about potential spin-offs. One idea that Kristen Baldwin touched on was that of best friends Hawk (Jacob Bertrand...

'Cobra Kai' Reveals the Truth Behind the Secret Mr. Miyagi Kept from Daniel
Image
Cobra Kai has come to an end after the third and final set of episodes has officially been released on Netflix. The second part of the final season was the darkest yet. Not only were all the kids off their games at the Sekai Taikai tournament, Daniel (Ralph Macchio) was out of sorts, too. The reason? He found an old box of Mr. Miyagi’s (Pat Morita) belongings under the floor in his home that made Daniel question who his sensei really was. Searching for the truth haunted Daniel for much of the second set of episodes. Fortunately, the final batch of episodes provides satisfying closure for Daniel and the audience.

'Cobra Kai' Season 6 Ending, Explained
Image
Cobra Kai ended in such a satisfying way, tying up loose ends and bringing closure, redemption, and happy endings for virtually every character. What’s more, some of the storylines brought closure 30 years later following the original The Karate Kid movies. A lot happened in the final five episodes of the three-part, 15-episode sixth and final season. The Sekai-Taikai tournament resumed in the wake of tragedy, the kids prepapred to move on, and the adults got clarity on so much in their lives. While it sets things up for potential spin-offs, should any be in the works, for some characters, it also spells the end.

Image
Spoiler Alert: This piece contains spoilers for Shrinking Season 2 Episode 7.

Shrinking music supervisors Christa Miller and Tony Von Pervieux approach song selection for the Apple TV+ comedy series by isolating specific songs for certain scenes in the show. While they bank as many songs as possible in a shared playlist, they also come into every season having a few names in mind who they want to fit into the half-hour episodes, especially new artists.

Miller, who also stars as Liz in the series that follows Jimmy Laird (Jason Segel) as he treats his therapy clients in unorthodox methods that have surprisingly good results, revealed that some placements get “stolen” or moved up based on how good a song is, which happened with both needle drops in Season 2 Episode 2 — “Never Been Better” by Ben Abraham and “cope” by Aka lisa.

Image
Quick Links Who Is the Biggest Villain in 'Cobra Kai' Season 6, Part 2? Sensei Wolf's Backstory, Explained Why Is Sensei Wolf so Dangerous?

Cobra Kai is all about the villains versus heroes storyline. The initial focus was on answering the question of whether Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka) was truly the villain of The Karate Kid or if it was actually Daniel Larusso (Ralph Macchio). The story expanded to focus on a new generation of karate kids, many taking the role of a villain through the seasons, like Hawk (Jacob Bertrand), Robby (Tanner Buchanan), and Kenny (Dallas Dupree Young).

Then, the series began to re-introduce other adult villains reprising their roles from The Karate Kid franchise, like John Kreese (Martin Kove), Terry Silver (Thomas Ian Griffith), and Chozen Toguchi (Yuji Okumoto). In the second part of the final sixth season, however, a new villain is introduced, and he could potentially be the worst one yet.

Cobra Kai co-showrunner Josh Heald confirms one villain who won't get a redemption arc during the final season.

Speaking to ScreenRant, Heald opened up about the current trajectory of Martin Kove's John Kreese, who is certain to avoid any form of redemption in the hit series' final season. "I think he murdered all of them," Heald joked of the character, who was last seen washing ashore in Korea following a prison break. "But, no, he forcibly exited a prison and walked into the night dressed as a maniacal doctor. And next we locate him, he's coming ashore in Korea, so he's resourceful. He's somebody who's got a goal right now, which is destroying his enemies."
