Portugal. The Man have released their long-awaited ninth album Chris Black Changed My Life. Stream it via Apple Music or Spotify below.

The follow-up to 2017’s Woodstock, Chris Black Saved My Life was produced by Jeff Bhasker. The album is dedicated to Portugal. The Man’s late friend and honorary band member, Chris Black, who died on May 19th, 2019.

Produced by Asa Taccone, the lead single “Dummy” has that classic Portugal. The Man sound: a slinky bass line and breezy, modulated vocals open the track, before singer John Baldwin Gourley assumes his natural warble to command his audience to dance: “1, 2, 3, 4/ Everybody get on the dance floor/ 5, 6, 7, 8,/ It’s 4:00 a.m. and I’m wide awake.”

Other singles from the album include “Champ,” “Thunderdome [W.T.A]” featuring Black Thought and Natalia Lafourcade, and “Summer of Luv” featuring Unknown Mortal Orchestra.

Portugal. the Man are headed out a batch of tour dates in support of the album,...

Portugal. The Man Team with Unknown Mortal Orchestra for New Song “Summer of Luv”: Stream
Image
It’s almost the “Summer of Luv” — at least according to Portugal. The Man and Unknown Mortal Orchestra. Listen to the bands’ collaborative new single below.

“Summer of Luv” is a slinky, psychedelic number, but according to Portugal. The Man frontman John Baldwin Gourley, it didn’t begin that way. “When we originally sat down to write” it, he said in a statement, “we intended to make this heavy song with a big riff, but the vocals came out chill because I was still recovering from my jaw problems, we realized it sat better in this space. The song turned out totally different than we intended.”

Gourley continued, “As we were working on the song, it just felt like it needed another voice, Ruban from Unknown Mortal Orchestra also lives in Portland and is one of our favorite artists, he just fit perfectly in.”

“Summer of Luv” appears on Portugal.

Watch Portugal. The Man Bring Simmering ‘So Young’ to ‘Seth Meyers’
John Baldwin Gourley
Portugal. The Man performed their ode to the fleeting glories of youth, “So Young,” on Late Night With Seth Meyers Monday. The understated cut is centered around a cascading guitar progression and is peppered with weary synths, an organ and occasional horns.

On Late Night, singer and guitarist John Baldwin Gourley breezed through in his smooth falsetto, peeling off the track’s cheeky Oasis reference (“But you and I are gonna live forever”) and acknowledging the harsh comedown of age, “Knocked out with the Midas touch/ A champion wearing golden gloves/ Got you punch drunk,...

Portugal. The Man Make The Leap On New Album
Band's first major-label effort, In the Mountain in the Cloud, is a big thing, borne of even bigger tensions.

Portugal. The Man have released six albums in six years (plus a completely re-recorded acoustic record too), but they've never made anything like In the Mountain in the Cloud, their latest swirling, psychedelic effort. Mainly because it almost killed them.

"To be perfectly honest, we wrote the album, did pre-production and then everything fell apart," singer/songwriter/guitarist John Gourley told MTV News. "And I think it was the fact that this had all fallen apart that it actually came together so well in the end. I think we spent seven months, eight months on the album, and it was just going into the studio, messing everything up, leaving the studio, crying about it for a month on tour, then trying again.
