[Warning: The below contains spoilers for Deadliest Catch Season 21] The August 8 episode of Deadliest Catch picked up where the premiere left off with Captain Jake Anderson sending out a Mayday distress signal aboard the Titan Explorer. The captains in range listened over the radio, concerned for the crew and Jake. Four hours earlier, there was a toxic ammonia leak that triggered an unfortunate series of events that forced the Titan Explorer crew off the $4 million vessel. Now it was a matter of Captain Keith Colburn, who was the closest in the area, to find them. After some touch and go, Keith was able to locate the raft. After the rescue Jake was overcome with emotion and embraced Keith. A sobering reminder of how they risk their lives every season at sea. The Wizard set course back to the Titan Explorer where there was hope they could get it back up and running. With the smell of ammonia all but gone,...

However, behind the on-screen drama and dangers is a bleak story of economic crisis. The new season will feature the likes of Jake Anderson and Keith Colburn, along with their iconic vessels, as they travel the Bering Sea. The fleet will be heading to Adak Island, a former military base in the Aleutians West Census Area of Alaska, in search of the alleged resurgence of red king crab. According to National Fisherman, the real story beyond the on-screen “gold rush” is actually one of frequent closures, biological uncertainties, and a struggling industry. The outlet reports that red king crab fishery in Bristol Bay, once one of the most valuable in the region, has been closed since the 2021–2022 season due to low stock assessments. There are limited harvesting opportunities in the Western Aleutians,...

Another high-stakes season of Deadliest Catch is about to begin, and the action is taking place in the most remote destination yet. In Season 21, the fan-favorite captains and their crews head to Adak Island — a remote and “unforgiving” location, according to Captain Sig Hansen.
"When fishermen discover monster red king crab in the far west, a gold rush-style race ignites among the Dutch Harbor fleet. To claim their share of the billion-dollar bounty, captains and crews must brave unforgiving 50-foot seas to reach abandoned Adak Island, venturing farther west than anyone has dared in over 30 years and beyond the bounds of rescue," according to Discovery Channel. "Navigating through unfamiliar territory to secure the lucrative haul, the crews face extreme conditions and major ship malfunctions that put them in serious life-threatening situations, leaving the fleet at the mercy of the tumultuous western Bering Sea."

Since its premiere in 2006, Discovery Channel's Deadliest Catch is an addictive look into the wild and treacherous lives of those aboard crab fishing boats in the Bering Sea — an occupation that stands as one of the world's most dangerous. That's 20 seasons worth of capturing perilous moments for the boat's crew and the camera operators on board, like dealing with a highly volatile, once-in-a-lifetime supermoon storm in 2018. Or that time they endured rather human moments, like the cardiac event that befell Captain Keith Colburn that left fans fearing the worst. We as fans have come to know these people intimately, and, by extension, the fishing vessels they work on, boats that can stand up, and must stand up, to the wavering whims of the sea.

Todd Kochutin was a crab fisherman occasionally featured on Deadliest Catch, but suddenly, he stopped appearing, which had some fans wondering where he went. Since its premiere in June 2005, there have been 20 seasons and counting of Deadliest Catch with a rotating gang of crabbers, boats, and captains. While some people only appear for a season, others like Sig Hansen, Jake Anderson, and Keith Colburn have been with the show for years. There have been plenty of unplanned departures from the series over the years as well.
While some may claim Deadliest Catch isn't the most realistic Discovery Channel reality series, there are parts of it that can not be faked. These are real, employed men, who are going out into the violent and unpredictable Bering Strait, and there have been plenty of close calls on the show and even a few deaths. Todd Kochutin was a crab fisherman who appeared in a handful of episodes.

Deadliest Catch doesn't just earn its name from fishermen's turbulent journeys to haul in pounds of Alaskan king crab. It also explores the life-threatening conditions that these fishermen have to go through: choppy seas, gale-force winds that could send you tumbling to the deck or into one of the heavy steel crab pots, or crabs getting loose and skittering around the deck. That's not even taking the stress of the job into account; Captain Keith Colburn suffered a cardiac arrest during a recent episode, once again highlighting the danger of being out in the open sea. But there's one danger that might top all of those hurricane season. The crab fishing season usually collides with hurricane season, escalating the battle of the elements that fishermen usually have to contend with. Deadliest Catch has dedicated whole episodes to what happens when a crew is caught in hurricane weather, and it shows...

The Deadliest Catch boats are as big a symbol of the Discovery Channel reality series as the oversized Alaskan king crab and snow crab they hunt for in the blistering Bering Sea. While there are some parts of Deadliest Catch that are faked in the way Discovery reality series often are, those are real boats out on the freezing and tumultuous North Atlantic Ocean, weighing upwards of 370 tons. The sight of one of these behemoth and industrial, but somehow nostalgic, ships blasting through ocean spray as gulls soar overhead is a defining shot of the series.
Names like Northwestern, Seabrooke, and Wizard are as tied to the show as Sig Hansen, Phil Harris, and Keith Colburn. It's not hard to see why Deadliest Catch is one of the most popular reality shows out there. The quest to haul in loads of crabs during the Alaskan king crab and snow crab fishing seasons has led to battles with the elements especially the raging seas not to mention the fact that it never sugarcoats how dangerous this work is for the fishing crews. Those crews have also grown into beloved fixtures on the show, especially Captain Keith Colburn, and the crew of the F/V Wizard. It's genuinely hard to imagine anything topping the thrills of Deadliest Catch, but there's a short-lived Discovery Channel series that manages to do just that: Catching Monsters.

The milestone 20th season of Deadliest Catch got off to a fiery start for Captain Keith Colburn and crew who faced a blaze aboard the F/V Wizard. It could have had catastrophic and tragic results, almost losing a crew member in Tyler Gatean. This was a sobering reminder of how dangerous and stressful the job of a commercial crab fisherman can be. Colburn and the rest of the captains have felt added pressure with the Red King Crab fishery open, competition hot, and big quotas to make before the season closes. They also had to endure the unpredictability of the weather patterns and wild Super El Niño storms hitting the Bering Sea, which created some wild weather conditions. If the shocking clip shared first exclusively to TV Insider from the September 24 episode is any indication, things seem to get even more dicey for Colburn. As the season finale inches closer,...

The F/V Wizard makes its grand entrance on the icy Bering Sea in Deadliest Catch. Under the steady command of Captain Keith Colburn, this historic vessel has earned its place among the elite in Alaskan crab fishing. Built in 1945 as a US Navy yard oiler, the Wizard had a colorful past before it was transformed into a crab-catching marvel by John Jorgensen in 1978. After a brief stint as a molasses hauler and a few years docked in Boston, the Wizard was reborn as a crab fishing vessel.
