Image
The U.K.’s National Theatre Live has unveiled a lineup of theater-to-cinema broadcasts featuring A-list talent from stage and screen, marking a significant expansion of the program’s reach under new director Indhu Rubasingham.

Originally presented by National Theatre of Scotland across Scottish venues in 2024, the production was filmed during its sold-out West End transfer at the intimate @sohoplace theater.

New British Drama Starring a 'Bridgerton' Fan-Favorite Nabs an Outrageous Rotten Tomatoes Score
Image
From Agatha Christie obsessions to critically acclaimed crime dramas, some of the best content from across the pond is available to stream in the US on BritBox. Perhaps the most exciting new addition to the streamer's line-up is the six-episode series, Outrageous, the latest in a long line of adaptations based on the notorious Mitford sisters. Following in the footsteps of the Amazon miniseries, The Pursuit of Love, which detailed the eldest sister's novels, Outrageous, co-directed by Joss Agnew and Ellie Heydon, takes the infamous raucous stories and gives them a modern refresh with gorgeous color design and a provocative edge.

The series, which features a selection of top performers, including the likes of Bridgerton's Bessie Carter, James Purefoy (The Following), Isobel Jesper Jones (The Serpent Queen), Joanna Vanderham (The Runaway), Shannon Watson (The Jetty), Zoe Brough, and more, released on BritBox just two days ago and is already impressing both audiences and critics.

Outrageous Season 1 Review: Champagne and Cyanide
Image
There is a specific function of the modern period drama, particularly those produced for streaming services, that goes beyond mere costume and escapism. It is to hold a mirror, sometimes ornate and gilded, up to our own turbulent times. Outrageous is the latest exhibit, a series that drops viewers into the shimmering, brittle world of 1930s aristocratic England.

This is a landscape of lavish parties and inherited privilege, all captured in the final, hazy moments before the continent plunged into war. At its center are the Mitfords, an Oxfordshire clan of six daughters and a son whose lives were the source of endless public fascination and scandal. They were the infamous celebrities of their day, a subject of fixation for a gossip-hungry press.

The series, based on their true story, opens in 1931, chronicling the sisters’ paths as the political temperature rises. Very quickly, the narrative reveals the deep ideological fractures...

Mitford Sisters Come to Life in First Look at BritBox Original Series ‘Outrageous’ | Exclusive Video
Image
The Mitford sisters — Nancy, Pamela, Diana, Unity, Jessica, and Deborah — will be brought to life by the BritBox original series “Outrageous,” which debuts on the streaming service on Wednesday, June 18.

A first look featurette shared exclusively with TheWrap shows the sisters at their best and their worst, including Unity’s relationship with Adolf Hitler (which began at the height of his power in Nazi Germany and lasted through his death) and her sister Diana’s condemnation of it.

In modern terms, the Mitfords were almost the Kardashians of their day. Initially famous for being themselves, the sisters each embarked on their own careers to various degrees of success, though without a Kris Jenner-esque matriach keeping everyone on task.

Watch the clip below:

“Outrageous” debuted at the Tribeca Film Festival this month. The show’s full tagline reads, “Based on Mary Lovell’s definitive biography, ‘The Mitford Girls’, ‘Outrageous’ is...

Francesca, Eloise, and Hyacinth Deserve Better Than Background Love Lives in ‘Bridgerton’
Image
Dearest gentle readers, it has come to this author’s attention that while Bridgerton continues to reign as the diamond of the season in the realm of romantic period dramas, not all members of the illustrious Bridgerton family are granted equal sparkle. Indeed, as the spotlight twirls from one grand love affair to the next, certain sisters, namely Francesca, Eloise, and Hyacinth, remain ever on the outskirts, their romantic prospects treated as little more than a passing footnote.

How curious that such spirited, sharp-witted, and wholly captivating young women should be relegated to the background, their hearts waiting ever so patiently for their moment to shine. If the ton is to remain enraptured, one must wonder: might it be time these overlooked Bridgerton ladies received more than just the crumbs of courtship?

‘You wouldn’t pick us out as mother and daughter!’: Imelda Staunton and Bessie Carter on acting together for the first time
Nancy Mitford
Bridgerton star Bessie – soon to play Nancy Mitford in a new TV drama – and her mum, acting royalty Imelda, talk Sondheim, sandwiches and taking the stage together in Shaw’s sex worker scandal Mrs Warren’s Profession

‘It’s amazing that I came from you,” says Bessie Carter to her mother, Imelda Staunton, during a break in rehearsals for the forthcoming revival of George Bernard Shaw’s Mrs Warren’s Profession, in which they’ll play a mother and daughter and share a stage for the first time. She has a point. Carter, 31, best known as Bridgerton’s Prudence Featherington, is 5ft 10 and aquiline, glamorous in a maroon leather coat and silver-studded shoes. Staunton, 69, is barely 5ft tall, quiet and unassuming in slacks and a blouse, short grey hair pinned back.

There’s no hint of grandeur to this theatrical dame, who was Oscar-nominated for her performance in Mike Leigh...

BritBox’s ‘A Cruel Love: The Ruth Ellis Story’ Is an Unflinching Crime Drama Centered on Capital Punishment: TV Review
Image
Created by Kelly Jones and based on Carol Anne Lee’s biography, “A Fine Day for Hanging,” BritBox’s “A Cruel Love: The Ruth Ellis Story” is a gutting, engaging historical crime drama revolving around an ambitious woman hindered by abuse, misogyny, trauma and her desire to be loved. A foreboding tale, Lucy Boynton is brilliant as Ruth Ellis, a young mother convicted of killing her abusive lover and who would become the last woman to be hanged in the United Kingdom.

Capital punishment is still a polarizing topic in the United States. However, the practice has been long outlawed in various places across the globe. “A Cruel Love: The Ruth Ellis Story” explores why an otherwise upstanding citizen might be driven to commit such a heinous act and how a country condemned her for it. The series opens on July 13, 1955, the day Ruth is executed for murdering race car...

Lucy Boynton on Playing the Last Woman Hanged in Britain in ‘A Cruel Love: The Ruth Ellis Story’
Image

Thirty years later, Mike Newell’s 1985 movie Dance With a Stranger, starring Miranda Richardson and Rupert Everett, told the story. Now, Lucy Boynton (Bohemian Rhapsody, Murder on the Orient Express, The Politician) portrays Ellis in the new four-part drama series A Cruel Love: The Ruth Ellis Story, which premieres in the U.S. on streaming service BritBox on Monday and aims to tell Ellis’ story through her eyes.

Produced by ITV Studios’ Silverprint Pictures for Itvx, where it will launch in March, and based on Carol Ann Lee’s biography A Fine Day for a Hanging: The Real Ruth Ellis Story, the show also features Toby Jones as Ellis’ lawyer, Laurie Davidson, Mark Stanley, Joe Armstrong, Arthur Darvill, Juliet Stevenson, Toby Stephens, Amanda Drew, and Bessie Carter.

While an official release year hasn't been confirmed, the show's showrunner expects the series to return in 2026. This may seem like a long way off, but it'll be 2026 before we know it!

The first season explored the love story between Daphne and Simon. The second season then shifted its focus to the eldest Bridgerton sibling, Anthony, and told his love story with Kate. The latest season, Bridgerton season 3, saw Colin and Penelope finally get together. Now, in the upcoming Bridgerton season 4, fans can expect a new romance to take center stage. MIPCOM Hot List: The Best Scripted Series Heading to Cannes in 2024
Image
The glory days of peak TV, of blank cheque commissioning, open-ended series orders and blockbuster budgets, are well and truly behind us. But even with buyers tightening their purse strings, there’s still a hunger, and with the every-expanding global streaming market, a continually-growing demand for top-notch drama.

Ahead of MIPCOM Cannes — the number one global television market which runs October 21-24 — the supply side of the scripted business is also looking strong. From big-budget period pieces to quirky indie gems, from glossy period pieces to gritty urban drama, the offerings this year are broad and deep.

Budget constraints mean there will be fewer moon-shot deals at this year’s MIPCOM — proceedurals, thrillers and star-driven projects will have an edge over riskier, niche-focused fare — but for producers who know how to crunch the numbers, there is business to be done.

Here is The Hollywood Reporter‘s hot list of the...

Breaking Baz: ‘Downton Abbey’ Star Jim Carter Goes “Wow!” When He Sees Wife Imelda Staunton Dazzle In ‘Hello, Dolly!’ At The London Palladium
Image
Jim Carter, who famously played Carson the master butler on Downton Abbey, clearly was taken by the leading artist giving a terrifically moving performance as Dolly Gallagher Levi upon the London Palladium stage. “That’s my wife,” he declared during the interval.

Indeed it was. Imelda Staunton was creating a gold-standard portrait of the meddlesome fixer at the heart of the landmark musical Hello, Dolly! created by Jerry Herman and Michael Stewart from Thornton Wilder’s The Matchmaker.

“It’s a brilliant production,” Carter told me.

“The problem is,” he continued, ”I can’t see anyone else on stage. I can only look at her. I’m sitting there going, ‘Wow!’”

Totally understandable, because the other 2,200 members of the audience were falling in love with her as well.

Simon and Daphne's love story is arguably the worst out of all the Bridgerton romances. Queen: Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story was a clever, heartbreaking, and thrilling prequel spinoff series. Bridgerton season 2 featured the Netflix franchise's best romance, while also skillfully balancing the other characters' storylines.

Netflix has released three seasons of Bridgerton and one prequel spinoff series, and more are expected to come in the upcoming years as the show continues to dominate the streaming world. While every installment in the historical romance franchise has been well received overall by fans and critics alike, every viewer has their favorite and least favorite. Some fans' and critics' cumulative scores of each season (and prequel spinoff show) are documented on websites such as Rotten Tomatoes and IMDb, but those two online sources are not the only factors in this ranking of which Bridgerton stories are the best.

‘Bridgerton’: Luke Newton & Nicola Coughlan Share Rom-Com Hopes for Polin in Season 4
Image
[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Bridgerton Season 3, Episode 8, “Into the Light.”] Bridgerton‘s third season may have come to an end, but Penelope (Nicola Coughlan) and Colin’s (Luke Newton) story is far from over. In the final moments of the season, it was revealed that Penelope would continue to write her Lady Whistledown column under her own name. Also, a married Penelope and Colin won the Featherington heir race as they had a baby boy in the flash-forward scene, while Philippa (Harriet Cains) and Prudence (Bessie Carter) had daughters. This means Penelope and Colin are the heads of the Featherington household, placing them across the street from Bridgerton house. In other words, they’ll continue to be close by. Already confirmed to return for Season 4, TV Insider caught up with Coughlan and Newton at the series’ world premiere in New York this past May where they got candid about what they’re looking forward...

‘Bridgerton’ Season 3 Part 1 Recap: What to Remember for Part 2
Image
As the second half of Bridgerton Season 3 approaches, the events of Part 1 might already seem distant. Very much indeed happened in the first four episodes of the Netflix series’ third installment, which ended with a climactic carriage scene and cliffhanger that has left viewers longing for the rest of the season.

Below, find episodic recaps as to plotlines such as the Featherington fronts — Penelope’s (Nicola Coughlan) search for a suitor and her sisters’ attemps to get pregnant — as well as Colin’s (Luke Newton) attempts to help Penelope until he had some realizations of his own about his feelings toward her. Francesca Bridgerton also entered society at the beginning of Season 3, and of course, Violet Bridgerton (Ruth Gemmell) and Lady Danbury (Adjoah Andoh) have attempted to shepherd the Bridgertons and mold society in their own ways.

Bill Pullman Shares Surprising Songs He Listened to While Playing Alex Murdaugh, Compares Son Lewis’ ‘Lessons in Chemistry’ to ‘While You Were Sleeping’
Image
Bill Pullman is a liar.

The star of “Murdaugh Murders: The Movie” doesn’t mean to be, but confesses he is one during our interview.

The two-part Lifetime movie in which Pullman portrays convicted murderer Alex Murdaugh wasn’t, by any means, a light-hearted project. And while focusing on heavier topics, some actors turn to “comfort” TV or movies.

One of mine, I tell him, is “While You Were Sleeping,” his 1995 rom-com with Sandra Bullock. But he doesn’t have one. And that might come as a surprise if you’ve watched recent FYC press he’s done. In fact, he was asked about it on a panel three days before our conversation.

“They asked a similar question, and I lied,” he whispers. “I just told my publicist today, I feel so bad! Something about that question, I couldn’t think of anything that was accurate. The only thing I...

'Bridgerton' Season 3: Part 1 Slows Down on Scandal
Image
After keeping loyal readers waiting for two years, Lady Whistledown finally made her return in season three of Netflix’s smash hit regency romance ‘Bridgerton.’ Each season follows the love story of one of the Bridgerton children, based on the eight-book series by Julia Quinn. The title ‘Bridgerton’ has become synonymous with steaminess and scandal, with the first season being labeled as a “bodice ripper” with many passionate love scenes between its leads, Daphne (Phoebe Dynevor) and Simon (Regé-Jean Page). Season two lightened up a bit with the enemies-to-lovers arc between the eldest Bridgerton son, Anthony (Jonathan Bailey) and Kate (Simone Ashley), the sister of his betrothed. So, where does season three lie? It seems to be too soon to say. Only the first four episodes of ‘Bridgerton’ season three dropped on May 16, with the second half coming almost a month later on June 13. Wallflower Penelope Featherington (Nicola Coughlin) is...

‘Bridgerton’ Changed How Period Shows Dress
Image
Dearest readers: It’s Bridgerton Week at IndieWire. We’re celebrating the new season by diving deep on one of the best romance shows on TV.

Lady Whistledown’s innovation among the scandal sheets is that she uses people’s names to dish about marriage-mart gossip. But the “Bridgerton” costume department has had quite a novel innovation on an old form, too, and one we deem worthy of celebration.

How we feel about old-timey clothes is influenced by an intuitive set of conventions that reflect our contemporary fashion tastes. A costume designer’s choice of color, silhouette (the outline or shape of a garment), fabric, and texture all work to tell us who is conceited, who is shy, and who is, as Queen Charlotte (Golda Rosheuvel) would put it, a sparkler.

But if one looks at costumes from Regency romances 10 or 15 years before “Bridgerton” first aired in 2020 — your “Pride & Prejudice...

‘Bridgerton’: Why Felicity Featherington Is Missing From the Show
Image
Bridgerton Season 3 is bringing Penelope (Nicola Coughlan) and Colin’s (Luke Newton) love story to life from Julia Quinn’s Romancing Mister Bridgerton. However, a key character from Polin’s book is not featured in the Netflix show at all: Felicity Featherington. Another Featherington sister?! Yes, there’s another one in the book series! Felicity is closest to Penelope within the Featherington family and the youngest sibling. She’s also a dear friend to Hyacinth Bridgerton. In the Netflix series, Penelope only has two siblings, Prudence (Bessie Carter) and Philippa (Harriet Cains). Showrunner Jess Brownell explains Felicity’s absence in the show to TV Insider. “I think [that] was a smart decision. I think that was a decision made by Chris Van Dusen and Shonda [Rhimes] early on in the pilot,” Brownell says. “It just gets hard to characterize three siblings, especially when the Featheringtons are in a secondary position. The main...
