"Reset My Expectations": Matthew Lillard Candidly Reflects On Panned Scooby-Doo Sequel 20 Years Later
Image
Matthew Lillard says that he had to readjust his expectations for his career after Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed received negative reviews and underperformed at the box office. Lillard played Shaggy Rogers in both of the theatrical live action movies based on the classic Hanna-Barbera cartoon. After the failure of the second movie, a third film was canceled, and the live-action version of the Scooby-Doo franchise moved to TV movies for Cartoon Network, which starred Nick Palatas as Shaggy.

While speaking with Business Insider, Lillard shared that after starring in the Scooby-Doo films, he thought they would take his career to new heights and that he would become a leading actor. Instead, however, the star acknowledged that the immediate aftermath led to a bit of a rough patch for him:

I thought I'd be No. 1 on the call sheet for the next 10 years of movies. And the reality was the exact opposite happened.

Arrowverse Producer Greg Berlanti Developing Live-Action Scooby-doo TV Series For Netflix
Image
Despite receiving mixed-to-negative reviews, the live-action Scooby-Doo movies remain beloved among fans of the Mystery Inc. gang. A threequel appears to be off the table, but Variety (via Toonado.com) is reporting that a new live-action TV series is in the works and heading to Netflix.

No plot details have been revealed, but the one-hour drama project is nearing a deal at the streamer with a script-to-series commitment. Based on the classic Hanna-Barbera cartoon of the same name, Warner Bros. Television is producing the project with Josh Appelbaum and Scott Rosenberg (Cowboy Bepop) serving as writers and executive producers.

André Nemec and Jeff Pinkner will also executive produce under their Midnight Radio banner, while Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, and Leigh London Redman will take on the same role through Berlanti Productions.

Berlanti is best known for his DC TV work and was behind Netflix's recently released Dead Boy Detectives. He's...

Ruh Roh: A Scooby-Doo Live-Action Drama Series Is Coming To Netflix
Image
Mystery Inc. rides again! Variety is reporting that the long-running "Scooby-Doo" franchise may be making a leap back to the live-action world, this time courtesy of Netflix. Sources tell the outlet that, unlike past versions of the Hanna-Barbera-created franchise, the new series won't be a comedic mystery but a one-hour drama series. Warner Bros. Television, which has been responsible for other dark teen-centric Netflix shows like "Chilling Adventures of Sabrina" and "Dead Boy Detectives," is set to produce.

Though the deal apparently isn't set in stone yet, the untitled "Scooby-Doo" live-action project is apparently in talks to receive a script-to-series commitment, with the team from Arrowverse maestro Greg Berlanti's Berlanti Productions (which also helped bring the two above titles to life) set to produce. Josh Appelbaum and Scott Rosenberg, the creative duo that co-executive produced shows like Hulu's "High Fidelity" and MGM+'s underrated "From," are set to...

New mystery mission for 'Scooby-Doo'
Matthew Lillard, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Linda Cardellini, Freddie Prinze Jr., Nicholas Hope, and Neil Fanning in Scooby-Doo (2002)
There will be a third live-action/CG "Scooby-Doo" movie, this time headed to TV and DVD.

Titled "Scooby-Doo: In the Beginning" -- a prequel set before the 2002 and 2004 "Scooby-Doo" theatricals -- the film will debut on Cartoon Network in fall 2009 when it also will be released on DVD. It finds the Mystery gang uniting for the first time to solve the haunting of their high school.

"Scooby-Doo: In the Beginning" will feature an all new cast of lesser-known actors replacing the original quartet of Freddie Prinze Jr., Sarah Michelle Gellar, Matthew Lillard and Linda Cardellini. Rob Amell ("Life With Derek") will play Freddy, joined by newcomers Kaitlyn Melton as Daphne, Hayley Alcroft as Velma and Nick Palatas as Shaggy. The computer-generated Scooby-Doo will be voiced by Frank Welker, a longtime voice actor on the animated "Scooby-Doo" series.

For Cartoon, which airs Hanna-Barbera's classic "Scooby" toons, the new film is part of its push into movies and live-action.

The original movie is co-produced by Warner Premiere, the direct-to-dvd and direct-to-platform production arm of Warner Bros. Entertainment, and Cartoon Network. Warner Home Video will distribute on DVD.

Brian Levant will direct from a script by Daniel and Steven Altiere. Brian Gilbert is producing.

Production is slated to begin Monday in Vancouver.
