Plenty of horror movies have shifted the focus from vampires to vampire hunters, imagining an underground network of stake-drivers combatting the elusive breed of bloodsuckers. Sometimes the two sides overlap, as in the “Blade” films. “Abraham’s Boys” has the gist of an original angle that goes straight to the primary source of modern vampire mythologies.

Here, the protagonist is Dutch undead expert Dr. Abraham Van Helsing, who’d been called to England to fight a supernatural nemesis in Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel “Dracula.” That polymath, famously played by everyone from Peter Cushing, Laurence Olivier and Anthony Hopkins to Willem Dafoe (in last year’s “Nosferatu”), is now a recluse in the New World, hiding out from spectral pursuers 18 years after he’d helped orchestrate the Count’s extinction.

Kit Williamson’s new scripted half-hour comedy series “Unconventional” has been acquired by LGBTQ streaming network Revry.

Williamson, a six-time Emmy nominee best known as the creator and star of “Eastsiders,” stars in “Unconventional” as Noah Guillory, a queer millennial struggling with his 10-year marriage, possibly starting a family, and the future of his PhD program while also acting as the sperm donor to his sister Margot’s wife, Eliza.

The nine-episode season – each episode follows a month of Eliza’s pregnancy — will premiere on Revry on Feb. 11.

“‘Unconventional’ comes at a time where stories about marginalized communities are more important than ever and ‘Unconventional’ is an unapologetically queer show,” Williamson said Thursday. “Unfortunately, LGBTQ representation has diminished considerably since ‘Eastsiders’ ended, and mainstream depictions often shy away from the complex realities of queer love. Revry is the perfect home for the series and I couldn’t be more excited about the acquisition.

As Pigeon Shrine FrightFest 2024 enters its final day, audiences are still buzzing about the unique and unsettling films that have premiered throughout the festival. One short film that is set to leave a lasting impression is Mlm, directed by the talented Brea Grant. Screening on Monday, August 26th, this short takes the concept of multi-level marketing and spins it into a dark and twisted horror tale. The film stars Jessika Van, Courtney Pauroso and horror fan favourite – Barbara Crampton.

We caught up with Brea Grant to discuss the inspiration behind Mlm, her journey into filmmaking, and her thoughts on the FrightFest experience.

Brea Grant: Mlm is about a woman who gets involved in a pyramid scheme that goes horribly wrong when she can’t meet her quotas.

Writers/directors Brea Grant (Torn Hearts) and Ed Dougherty (co-writer of Paint It Black) have wrapped production on their four-part horror anthology Grind, Deadline reports, adding that filming took place in the Los Angeles area. Grant got her start as an actress, working on such projects as Friday Night Lights, Midnight Movie, Heroes, Dexter, Rob Zombie’s Halloween II, and Ice Road Terror. She made her feature directorial debut with the 2013 film Best Friends Forever, and has since directed Torn Hearts, 12 Hour Shift, and episodes of Pandora, among other things. Doughterty has previously directed multiple short films and music videos.

And while genre films about the price of fame stretch from The Phantom of the Opera to The Phantom of the Paradise and The 27 Club most of them are set in the world of rock, and frequently heavy metal. Never meet your heroes, they say ... "Torn Hearts" is about two rising artists in the country music world, Jordan Wilder (Abby Quinn) and Leigh Blackhouse (Alexxis Lemire), meeting the woman who inspired them, the legendary Harper Dutch (Katey Sagal). They drink, they sing, and they even live together. The dream does not match the reality, though, which is one of the themes director Brea Grant explores in her aesthetically poppy but thematically dark horror film.

The multi-talented Brea Grant is an actor, writer, and director, who has starred in several television shows and films like Dexter (2011), Halloween II (2009), and After Midnight (2019). In 2020, she wrote and directed the hilariously macabre 12 Hour Shift, which starred Angela Bettis. Grant’s latest project is the Blumhouse Television and Epix film Torn Hearts, which follows two singers trying to break into the country music scene in Nashville, but to do that they have to become friends with a reclusive country music star.

Written by Rachel Koller Croft and directed by Grant, Torn Hearts stars Abby Quinn and Alexxis Lemire as two friends who have a band called Torn Hearts. They jump at the opportunity to meet country music legend Harper Dutch, played by the iconic Katey Sagal. Harper has been living in seclusion since her sister died under mysterious circumstances, but she reluctantly agrees to help the two talented...

Keeping things in the family isn’t always easy—just ask the Gallagher Brothers. Blood doesn’t mean anything once fame and fortune enter the fray because outside interests will begin to whisper and divide until the world discovers two halves aren’t quite as good as the whole. That’s not saying Noel’s High Flying Birds or Liam’s Beady Eye are bad. They’ve both created some good music post-break-up, but neither reached the heights Oasis had. The former’s music and latter’s voice built something that could only exist with the two brothers working together. One could presume that some level of jealousy even helped fuel that success as both sought to prove their worth so vehemently that they ultimately exposed their respective animosity instead. After the 2000s seemingly kickstarted a new wave of independent horror, the 2010s (and beyond) were an exceptional time for new and emerging, as well as established, filmmakers to leave their own mark on the landscape of genre storytelling. One of the most notable aspects, or even trends, that I noticed while doing research for this entire series of retrospectives is how out of all of the decades, it feels like the 2010s was one of the best times for female filmmakers to get the opportunity to take the helm in comparison to other decades. The 1980s had a handful of women directors working in independent horror, but during both the ’90s and ’00s, it felt like the industry as a whole had taken a few steps backwards in providing female filmmakers the opportunity to tell the stories they wanted to tell.

"Which one of you is better?" Blumhouse has revealed an official trailer for a new film titled Torn Hearts, directed by the very talented actress & filmmaker Brea Grant. This is her third feature film so far and she's getting even better with each and every one. "Things are headed south in Torn Hearts as a country music duo in Nashville meet their idol only to find out it isn't quite the dream they imagined....How far would you go for your dreams?" That's the intro. The film follows a country music duo from Nashville who seek out the private mansion of their idol and end up in a twisted series of horrors that force them to confront the limits they'd go for their dreams. The film stars Katey Sagal and Abby Quinn, with Alexxis Lemire, Joshua Leonard, and Shiloh Fernandez. This doesn't sound like horror, but oh it definitely is.

The Fangoria Chainsaw Awards Return to Shudder Sunday, May 15: "Fangoria, Fangoria Studios and Shudder announced today that the 2022 Fangoria Chainsaw Awards will premiere on Sunday, May 15th at 7pm Et, exclusively on Shudder, AMC Networks’ premium streaming service for horror, thrillers, and the supernatural.

After a number of years in which it maybe wasn’t the case, it seems like we horror fans are continually spoiled year after year. Every December or January when it comes time to make my list of favorites for Daily Dead, I’m blown away as I look back and see just how many incredible books, films, TV shows, conventions, streaming offerings, DVDs, boutique Blu-rays – you name it – are released in a given year. Though it may have been a challenging disaster in so many other ways, 2021 was no exception when it came to horror. Here are just some of my favorites.

As a huge fan of the Child’s Play film series – particularly some of the latter Dtv entries that have taken the franchise into bizarre and exciting new directions – I was out of my mind excited about the new Chucky TV show, which aired on both USA and SyFy.

Marco spends his days applying for jobs online and waiting for Dana, his pregnant girlfriend, to get home. Strange post-it notes mysteriously appear around the apartment with cryptic warnings. A mechanic texts and calls him with menacing messages from an old non-functioning cell phone. The walls close in and tensions build between Marco and Dana’s relationship until all sense of safety dwindles as the lines between imagined and reality blur for both Marco and the audience. When Marco discovers the root of it all, his real problems begin.

Jim Cummings and Pj McCabe’s ‘The Beta Test’ will open the festival.

US directors Jim Cummings and Pj McCabe’s feature The Beta Test will open the UK’s genre film festival Grimmfest which is running as a physical event in Manchester from October 7-10.

Cummings and McCabe will also star in the film about a Hollywood agent who gets sucked into a world of sexual infidelity and mysterious streams of digital data. Los Angeles based-Vanishing Angle produced the horror thriller. The feature initially premiered in the Berlin International Film Festival’s Encounters.

Tattered Hearts comes from Epix’s and Blumhouse’s TV movie partnership, under which the latter is to develop and produce a slate of eight standalone horror and genre films. The Sagal-Lemire title joins previously announced A House on the Bayou, Unhuman and American Refugee.
