For anyone who saw A Complete Unknown and wondered how close it resembled the actual Newport Folk Festival where Bob Dylan amped up his music, a new documentary will help answer that question.
Among the many films just announced as part of the annual Venice Film Festival in September is Newport & the Great Folk Dream, which documents the legendary (and ongoing) festival in the pivotal folk-to-rock years between 1963 and 1966. The doc includes footage of Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, and the Paul Butterfield Blues Band — some of it from the same...

Last I saw Willie Nelson, on the Outlaw Music Festival tour, he gave well-earned solo space to son Lukas Nelson, who just released his first solo album. It’s high time. Dude’s a lifelong utility player — rock solid on guitar and vocals with the family band, while Willie circles the beat, and a team player with frequent Neil Young backing crew Promise of the Real. He’s become a go-to duet partner, notably with fellow next-gen icon Sierra Ferrell. Ferrell’s cameo on Nelson’s new American Romance is “Friend in the End,...

Nikki Lane has been on a Nashville tear this week, culminating with a pop-up appearance Wednesday night during Lukas Nelson’s headlining show at Chief’s, during which she sang “Born Runnin’ Outta Time,” off Nelson’s upcoming album American Romance. By show’s end, Lane was once again onstage, harmonizing on another song — and sparking up what appeared to be a tightly rolled joint.

“The next time hell starts freezing over/be sure to give a call,” Rodney Crowell sings with Ashley McBryde on the new duet “Taking Flight,” a soaring blues-rock ballad about the miles and years separating former lovers. Ending with an electrifying solo by Tyler Bryant, “Taking Flight” appears on the songwriter’s upcoming studio album, Airline Highway.
Produced by Bryant, a Nashville guitar hero and solo artist, Airline Highway features cameos by McBryde, Blackberry Smoke’s Charlie Starr, Lukas Nelson, and the country-rock sibling duo Larkin Poe — making for a particularly high-octane album.

Emmy Russell’s American Idol Journey
Emmy Russell made headlines last year for her American Idol audition. She revealed to the judges that she’s the granddaughter of country music icon Loretta Lynn. But the young singer was determined to make her own way and not rely on her family name. During her time on the ABC singing competition, she performed several original songs, as well as taking on her grandmother’s famous song “Coal Miner’s Daughter.”
Despite massive support from fans, Emmy Russell only made it to the Top 5 on American Idol. After she was eliminated, she opened up about how grateful she was for the opportunity. Then she went back to her ‘normal’ life as a young mother,...

A hollow, lifeless conference hall at the Los Angeles Convention Center is just about the last place you would expect to find a Grateful Dead tribute concert on a Friday night. But it was there that MusiCares put on a show for the ages, honoring the band at its Persons of the Year gala with founding members Bob Weir and Mickey Hart in attendance (drummer Bill Kreutzmann could not make the trip and delivered a message by video) and a slew of acolytes who understood the assignment.
Typically, the MusiCares dinner is a polite affair, with guests seated respectfully for most of the performances, save the all-star finale, a staple of the event. And that’s not to say that previous Person of the Year recipients — which include Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Bruce Springsteen, Paul McCartney and Barbra Streisand — didn’t have their own rabid fanbases in attendance. But the Deadheads just do things differently.

More than 15 Grammy Week events sponsored by the Recording Academy and many other Grammy-related parties were canceled this year due to January’s devastating Los Angeles fires, with the actual Grammy ceremony, which will still take place on Sunday, Feb. 2, pivoting to focus on raising funds for wildfire relief. But Friday’s MusiCares Persons of the Year Gala, honoring 2007 Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award recipients the Grateful Dead, went on as planned. And the annual charitable event actually felt more celebratory than ever, providing much-needed release and escape on the final night of a particularly rough month.

The Outlaw Music Festival Tour has generated much attention due to Willie Nelson’s extended absence from the first two weeks of shows due to illness, Lukas Nelson stepping in for his father with occasional help from guests like Derek Trucks, Susan Tedeschi, and Edie Brickell, the triumphant return of Willie on July 4, and the weird Bob Dylan shirt sold every night at the merch stand.
All of that has overshadowed the fact that Dylan is playing some of his loosest concerts in recent memory. After three years of delivering...

Willie Nelson, 91, Cleared To Go On The Road Again After Longer-Than-Expected Recuperation – Updated
Updated: Willie Nelson will soon be on the road again after an extended break on doctor’s orders. Originally, on June 21, the country music legend was advised to “rest for the next four days.” That was then extended to this week, before it was announced that the Presidential Medal of Freedom winner would, appropriately, be available to rejoin the running Outlaw Tour on July 4.
Nelson, 91, has had health issues interfere with touring in recent years, but the news that the Rock & Roll Hall of Famer is well enough to rejoin his compatriots is welcome news.
Previously on June 21: “We regret to inform you that Willie Nelson is not feeling well and, per doctor’s orders, has been advised to rest for the next four days,” reads a statement posted to the legendary county singer’s socials. He was scheduled to appear as part of the Outlaw Music Festival tonight,...

Bob Dylan has spent the past two weeks crisscrossing the country on the Outlaw Music Festival summer tour alongside Celisse, Robert Plant and Alison Krauss, and Lukas Nelson, who has been subbing in for his ailing father, Willie. Most Dylan fans have rightly been focused on his decision to jettison his Rough and Rowdy Ways set list of the past three years, bring in a series of 1950s covers songs he’s never done before, part ways with longtime pedal-steel player Donnie Herron, and reunite with gospel-era drummer Jim Keltner.
