‘It’s What’s Inside’ Team Breaks Down Selling Their $2.5 Million Thriller to Netflix for $17 Million, Reveals a Wild Alternate Ending and Sequel Potential
Image
Spoiler Alert: This story contains spoilers for “It’s What’s Inside,” now streaming on Netflix.

Writer and director Greg Jardin’s debut feature, “It’s What’s Inside,” is a body-swapping mystery. Yet Jardin had his own out-of-body experience the day the movie started an intense bidding war at Sundance in January.

“It’s still surreal now,” he says. “We made the movie in a bit of a bubble, $2.5 million independent, just with hopes that someone would buy it at a festival. Getting into Sundance alone was awesome. And then our first offer came in 24 hours after our premiere, and the offer started at $5 million, which was double our budget. I was like, ‘Man, this is incredible.'”

But the buzz around Park City kept growing.

“It was my first experience,” he says. “With any of that stuff, there’s essentially a bidding war that lasted about 36 hours. I was in meetings with our financiers and sales agent.

Why the $17 Million Deal for ‘It’s What’s Inside’ May Be the Last of Its Kind
Image
The Sundance audience at The Ray Theater had no idea what to expect from “It’s What’s Inside.” The film marked a directorial debut (Greg Jardin), had exactly zero stars in the cast, and was only teased with a vague logline about some “mysterious suitcase” ruining a wedding party.

Likewise, the film’s producer William Rosenfeld didn’t know what he’d get out of the film festival’s audience. What he got from them was an “explosion” — one that both changed the film’s fortune and brought in a small fortune.

“Oh shit, it’s that kind of movie,” Rosenfeld recalled of when the audience finally realized early on what that suitcase actually contains and does to the protagonists.

Just three days after that premiere, Netflix acquired the genre-bending teen/horror/comedy/mind-fuck movie for $17 million, marking one of the biggest sales in Sundance history.

“It’s What’s Inside” launches on Netflix this Friday,...

Netflix Nabs Horror Film ‘It’s What’s Inside’
Image
Netflix is going all in on It’s What’s Inside. The streaming service has acquired the horror thriller out of Sundance, three days after the project debuted as part of the fest’s horror-centric Midnight Section.

The feature hails from writer director Greg Jardin, and centers on a pre-wedding party that becomes a nightmare when an estranged friend shows up with a mysterious suitcase.

“I’ve been pitching it as a sci-fi thriller, with jokes,” Jardin told The Hollywood Reporter earlier in the fest.

Rights went for a reported $17 million, which would make it the highest sale of the Park City, Utah-based festival so far this year. Over the weekend, Searchlight Pictures made a $10 million deal to acquire the Jesse Eisenberg-directed feature A Real Pain, which stars the actor-filmmaker alongside Kieran Culkin.

“On behalf of the cast, crew, and entire production team, we are absolutely thrilled that It...

From his work on promising indie films like The Seven Faces of Jane to music videos for Arcade Fire, Kendrick Lamar, and more, producer Jason Baum clearly has a finger on the pulse of pop culture and creative innovation. Experimental Anthology Film ‘Seven Faces of Jane’ Premieres at Geena Davis’ Bentonville Film Festival
Image
“You have to put it in the script. If you put in the script – it will happen.”

This is Geena Davis’ sage advice to filmmakers when crafting stories aiming to incorporate inclusive storylines and characters.

“Nobody is going to second guess if it says the scene takes place at, say, ‘a police station which is 40 women,’ or if there’s a scene where ‘a crowd gathers, which is half female,’” continues the Oscar-winning actor and founder of the eponymous Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media.

“Specify what it is. You have to write in the script.”

That advice came to fruition in “The Seven Faces of Jane,” a surrealistic anthology film that held its world premiere at Geena Davis’ Bentonville Film Festival’s eighth edition last night in the quaint Arkansas city, home to Walmart’s global headquarters. The fest, founded and chaired by Davis, runs in-person through June...

Roman Coppola’s ‘The Seven Faces of Jane,’ Starring Gillian Jacobs: Watch First Clip (Exclusive)
Image
Variety can exclusively reveal a clip from “The Seven Faces of Jane,” produced by Roman Coppola and starring Gillian Jacobs, which will have its world premiere as the opening night film at Geena Davis’ Bentonville Film Festival, Arkansas on June 22.

The eight-chapter experiential road trip film is co-directed by Julian Acosta, Xan Cassavetes, Gia Coppola, Ryan Heffington, Boma Iluma, Gillian Jacobs, Ken Jeong and Alex Takacs.

Automobile giant Ford was looking for a unique way to reach consumers about new electric vehicle Mustang Mach E and speak to a diverse audience in authentic voices. For “The Seven Faces of Jane,” Roman Coppola had the vision of creating a film using the “Exquisite Corpse” concept, a method of creating art by collectively assembling parts to create a whole. This format consisted of each filmmaker contributing a segment with little to no knowledge of what the others were doing, and they were...

Kendrick Lamar’s ‘The Heart Part 5’ Video Kicks Off Partnership With ‘South Park’ Creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone
Image
It took a village to create Kendrick Lamar’s mind-melting new video for his song “The Heart Part 5,” which on the surface is just him performing in front of a red backdrop until you realize that his face deepfakes into those of Oj Simpson, Jussie Smollett, Nipsey Hussle, Kobe Bryant and Kanye West.

While the video was directed and executive produced by Lamar and longtime creative collaborator Dave Free and features a host of creative collaborators (listed below), the deep fake is credited to Deep Voodoo, a studio launched by “South Park” creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone to specialize in the technology — and the “The Heart Part 5” video appears to be the first fruit of a partnership between Lamar’s PGLang company and the “South Park” founders’ Park County banner to produce a new feature film for Paramount Pictures.

The Deep Voodoo studio — the name of which almost certainly...

PETA Calls For Los Angeles D.A. Probe Into ‘Jackass Forever’ Stunts, Treatment Of Animals
Image
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals upped its campaign this week against Paramount’s forthcoming Jackass Forever. In a letter to Los Angeles Deputy District Attorney Kimberly Abourezk and L.A. City Attorney Mike Feuer, PETA Cousel Caitlin Zittkowski wrote that the film’s trailer contains “scenes apparently involving cruelty to animals.”

She specifically calls out moments that include “Johnny Knoxville being charged by an agitated bull, a person being bitten on the nose by a captive snake, and a tarantula trapped in a plastic tube between two people’s heads.” She notes that, since the film appears to have been shot in L.A., any violations would lie within the purview of their offices. According to IMDb, production did in fact take place in L.A.

The bullfighting scene, for instance, may violate California Penal Code section 597(b), according to Zittkowski. She says that section applies to any...

“When we curated and announced our slate for the 2020 SXSW Film Festival, filled with an array of wonderful films we were excited to share with our unique audience, we had no idea of the unprecedented impact that Coronavirus would have on all our lives,” Janet Pierson, Director of Film, said. “Our hearts were broken for all the filmmakers who invested so much time and talent in their work, hoping for a transformative experience at our event. Spike Jonze directed the film, described as a live documentary experience, which mixes a stage show presentation from Beastie Boys members Mike Diamond (Mike D) and Adam Horovitz (Ad-Rock) talking about their personal journey forming the band with the late Adam Yauch (McA) and their 40 years of friendship.

“Now here’s a little story that I got to tell about three bad brothers that you know so well,” a young Mike D crudely raps in old home movie footage shown in the trailer. “It started way back in history with Ad-Rock, McA, and me, Mike D.”

Beastie Boys Story Trailer Drops the Beat in IMAX
Spike Jonze at an event for Tell Them Anything You Want: A Portrait of Maurice Sendak (2009)
Apple TV+ has unveiled the full-length trailer for Spike Jonze's Beastie Boys Story. The footage is nearly 3 minutes-long and gives Beastie boys and girls a much better idea of what to expect. In late 2018, Adam "Ad-Rock" Horovitz and Michael "Mike D" Diamond released their long-awaited memoir and celebrated with some extremely limited live speaking gigs with their long-time DJ Mix Master Mike providing the soundtrack. Spike Jonze was in attendance at the first Los Angeles event and decided that they should collaborate on a documentary based on their live gigs. And largely, it seems that the bulk of the movie will be in that live documentary format.

According to the press release, Beastie Boys Story features Mike Diamond and Adam Horovitz as they "tell you an intimate, personal story of their band and 40 years of friendship in this live documentary experience directed by their longtime friend and collaborator, and loud chewer,...

Beastie Boys Story Trailer Brings First Look at Spike Jonze's Apple TV+ Documentary
Apple has revealed the first trailer for Beastie Boys Story. We learned earlier this month that Oscar-winner Spike Jonze had a new documentary on the legendary group set to premiere later this year. Now, we have a little look at what that's going to entail, and it looks to be an intimate, unique experience. How, precisely, it will play out remains to be seen, but it's promised that this will be a "live documentary experience" from director Spike Jonze and the surviving members of the Beastie Boys.

The Spike Jonze directed teaser kicks off with a rendition of the group's hit song Paul Revere while archival clips of Mike D, McA and Ad-Rock play. We then see Mike " Mike D" Diamond and Adam "Ad-Rock' Horovitz take the stage to present clips to a live audience. It appears Spike Jonze, who directed the group's famous video for Sabotage, isn't taking a...

Spike Jonze at an event for Tell Them Anything You Want: A Portrait of Maurice Sendak (2009)
Spike Jonze's Beastie Boys Story documentary will land on Apple TV+ after some IMAX exclusive screenings. Early last year, it was revealed that Jonze was working with surviving members Adam Horovitz and Michael Diamond, along with actor/producer Jonah Hill. At the time, it appeared to be a different take on their Beastie Boys Book stage shows they were doing. The new documentary will have those elements thrown into the mix, but filtered through the mind of Spike Jonze, which should make for a memorable experience.

The Beastie Boys documentary finds Michael Diamond, aka Mike D, continuing his relationship with Apple. Diamond currently hosts an Apple Radio show title the Echo Chamber. A special cut of the documentary will open exclusively in select Imax theaters on April 3rd in a limited release before dropping on Apple TV+ on April 24th. It's not clear what will be added to the "special cut,...
