The entertainment company, through its NBCU Launch brand for talent development and inclusion efforts, narrowed down six original projects as finalists for its inaugural NBCU Launch Unscripted Pitch Accelerator, TheWrap can reveal exclusively. The projects will each receive a $20,000 development deal, as well as tailored support for the creators developing their pitches for greenlight consideration at NBC, Bravo or Peacock.

Dolly Parton has issued a statement about the passing of her long-time husband Carl Dean.

As previously reported, Dean died on March 3 at his home in Nashville at the age of 82. He and the country music legend had been married for over 60 years.

So very sad, the former news; and also so very impressive, the latter accomplishment.

NBCUniversal Execs Face Reality Check As Unscripted Hit Hardest By Layoffs
Image
Exclusive: NBCUniversal started another round of layoffs earlier Wednesday, as revealed by Deadline.

It appears that its unscripted teams were the hardest hit in this latest round of redundancies, with at least two SVPs on the reality side impacted as well as a number working across NBC, Peacock and Bravo.

Deadline understands that Stephanie Steele, SVP Unscripted Current Production, and Jenny Ramirez, SVP Unscripted Formats, were among those let go today.

Steele, who one source described as “one of the most beloved senior people in our business,” has been with the company for nearly 15 years. She oversaw the team that produces its true-crime shows including Casey Anthony: Where The Truth Lies, Face to Face with Scott Peterson and Matthew Perry: A Hollywood Tragedy.

Ramirez joined the company in late 2022, having previously been SVP Unscripted Programming for TBS, TNT and TruTV, where she worked on shows such as Wipeout, Rat in the Kitchen...

Black Label Media Options Patrick Hoffman’s ‘The White Van’; Grant Singer To Direct
Image
Exclusive: Black Label Media has taken rights to Patrick Hoffman’s debut crime novel The White Van to develop as a feature for filmmaker Grant Singer.

Singer and author Hoffman will team to adapt the novel together.

The project reunites Singer with Black Label Media on the heels of Reptile, his chart-topping Netflix feature debut starring Benicio Del Toro, which the company also produced. That movie premiered at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival.

The White Van is a kinetic heist thriller following a troubled young woman who is lured into a criminal scheme that leaves her wanted for bank robbery and hunted by a corrupt cop who doesn’t want justice – but wants the money for himself. Evoking crime novelists like Dennis Lehane and gritty seventies films like Dog Day Afternoon, the line between good and evil blurs as criminals, cops, and hustlers collide in the unforgiving underbelly of San Francisco.

From ‘Quiet on Set’ to ‘Fall of Diddy,’ Meet the Doc Team Holding Pop Culture to Account
Image
The concept initially encountered some skepticism: What if you applied the investigative chops of seasoned reporters to the murky conservatorship constraining Britney Spears? Could anything new or insightful emerge from that process, given the swirl of media coverage that always surrounds the pop star?

But it was a combination that filmmaker Mary Robertson believed could be revelatory when she was the showrunner of The New York Times Presents — and it’s something she has been continuing to champion ever since. At the Nyt, that approach resulted in two hit films, Framing Britney Spears and Controlling Britney Spears, which reignited conversation around the pop star’s push to end her conservatorship and prompted responses from celebrities like Kacey Musgraves and Hayley Williams. At the production company that Robertson founded in March 2022, Maxine, a similar fusion of investigative journalism and popular figures and brands has paid dividends.

In a little under three years,...

Image
Exclusive: NBCUniversal made a slew of changes to its executive ranks this week and there’s more to come.

Deadline understands that Sharon Vuong has been named the interim head of unscripted content in the competition and game show space following the departure of Corie Henson.

Vuong, who is EVP, Alternative Programming & Development, will lead the team that oversees series such as America’s Got Talent and The Voice. Henson was EVP, Unscripted Content, Competition and Game Shows, NBCUniversal Entertainment.

She will work closely with Rachel Smith, who is EVP, Unscripted Content, Lifestyle & Documentaries, who worked alongside Henson on the lifestyle and reality side of the business.

As one source told Deadline the easiest way to delineate the two teams is that the team that Vuong is now leading deals in cash prizes, where Smith’s team doesn’t (unless you count love as a prize).

SpinCo’s Choice Of Entertainment President Hints At NBCUniversal Offshoot’s Programming Strategy
Image
From red carpets to resident aliens and driving ranges, NBCUniversal’s SpinCo has given its first indication what its programming strategy might look like with the hire of Val Boreland as President of Entertainment.

Boreland will oversee programming for cable networks including USA Network, Oxygen, E!, Syfy and Golf Channel as the Comcast-owned company spins off these assets into its own entity.

Boreland’s background – she is currently EVP and Head of Content Acquisitions, TV & Streaming for NBCUniversal – points to a mix of third-party acquisitions alongside original series.

She has overseen acquiring content for NBC, the cable networks and Peacock and was credited with the latter’s savvy acquisition of the streaming rights to hit Paramount drama series Yellowstone as well as its deal for the John Wick prequel The Continental.

But she does also have original programming experience, as NBCUniversal was quick to point out in its announcement Thursday.

The Strange: J.D. Dillard to direct adaptation of Nathan Ballingrud sci-fi thriller
Image
Director J.D. Dillard has gotten a lot of press for projects that he was attached to, but they fell apart. There was a remake of The Fly, a Star Wars movie and a sequel to The Rocketeer… But while those high-profile projects have gotten away from him, he has managed to make a few movies in recent years: the sci-fi crime drama Sleight, the creature feature Sweetheart, and the Korean War movie Devotion. He has also directed episodes of Utopia, The Twilight Zone, The Outsider, and Two Sentence Horror Stories. Now, Deadline reports that Dillard has signed on to direct an adaptation of the 2023 sci-fi thriller novel The Strange, which was written by Nathan Ballingrud. Aisha Porter-Christie is writing the screenplay and the project is set up at Black Label Media, the company that also produced Devotion.

Aisha Porter-Christie Adapting Nathan Ballingrud’s Sci-Fi Thriller Novel ‘The Strange’ For Black Label Media; J.D. Dillard To Direct
Image
Exclusive: Black Label Media has acquired film rights to The Strange, the 2023 sci-fi thriller novel by Nathan Ballingrud, enlisting Aisha Porter-Christie (Amazon MGM’s Citizen) to adapt the screenplay and J.D. Dillard (Devotion) to direct.

The project reunites Dillard with Black Label Media on the heels of Devotion, his historical war epic for Columbia Pictures, which the company produced.

The Strange is set in New Galveston, Mars in the year 1931. In the desolate frontier of a Martian colony, 14-year-old Anabelle Crisp embarks on a perilous quest through the desert, vowing revenge on the man who doomed her father to the gallows and stole her prized possession — the last known recording of her mother’s voice. The book is said to evoke the gritty, lawless atmosphere of True Grit combined with the raw intensity of Mad Max, following a young girl’s relentless search for justice as she battles ruthless outlaws...

Why NBCUniversal Is Holding On to Bravo as It Spins Off the Rest of Its Cable Nets
Image
NBC bought Bravo in 2002, making the small, arts-focused network its first entertainment cable network. Fast forward to 2025, and Bravo — a very different kind of channel than it was two decades ago — will soon be the company’s only cable outfit.

As Comcast spins off most of the NBCUniversal cable networks — USA, MSNBC, CNBC, E!, Oxygen, Syfy and Golf Channel — into a separate organization, it strikingly has decided to keep Bravo in the original company alongside NBC, Peacock and Telemundo.

Bravo isn’t NBCUniversal’s most-watched cabler — that would be MSNBC, whose shift to SpinCo raises a bunch of thorny issues, including potentially having to consider changing its name. It isn’t even NBCU’s top-rated entertainment cable channel, which is USA Network: Per Variety’s 2023 networks ranker, MSNBC averaged 1.22 million viewers last year, with USA at 688,000 and Bravo at 571,000.

So why Bravo? Quite simply, in a world of zombie cable networks,...

But some wonder if the universally beloved music legend’s statement is a snub unto itself.

Beyonce covered Dolly Parton’s most beloved song — a very tall order — on the snubbed album.

Is Dolly Parton chiming in with the disses? Or is she just being a peacemaker while spreading around the praise?

Loren Brovarnik under fire for ‘major attitude’ during Tell All: ‘Thinks she’s an A list celebrity’
Image
90 Day Fiance: Happily Ever After? viewers think Loren Brovarnik got a little too high on her horse.

During Part 4 of the Season 8 Tell All, Loren and her husband, Alexei Brovarnik, left early after filming their segment.

As Loren explained, Alexei had to work the next day, and they didn’t have childcare for their three kids, so they caught a late flight back to Florida.

This didn’t sit well with their castmates, Sophie Sierra and Thais Ramone, who felt they should have stuck around like the rest of the cast.

As Loren and Alexei bid farewell to their castmates backstage, Loren felt slighted while doling out hugs.

When she hugged Sophie and Thais goodbye, she remarked that their hugs seemed “half-a**ed.”

Neve Campbell shares why she rejoined the Scream franchise for Scream VII
Image
Since the announcement of a seventh film, the Scream franchise has been the subject of much buzz (both bad and good). But this time around, we've received some news that will make many Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) fans very happy.

Back in August 2023, Scream VII (unofficial title) was officially announced to be in development with film director Christopher Landon set to direct. However, the filmmaking process ended up being slowed down due to the writers and actors strikes. Then, the movie hit another obstacle in production when its main star, Melissa Barrera, was fired, and another main cast member, Jenna Ortega, exited the film.

Since then, so much has happened. Guy Busick was announced to be writing the script from a story he co-wrote with James Vanderbilt, Scream creator Kevin Williamson had taken over directing duties from Landon, and scream queen Neve Campbell had rejoined the slasher franchise to reprise...
