Andor showrunner Tony Gilroy has revealed that he did consider including a cameo from one of the original Star Wars trilogy's leads, Princess Leia Organa, in the second season, but the idea was ultimately scrapped.

"There were some conversations early on, there was much to be made. This is in the sketching stage," Gilroy told ScreenRant. "This is in the really soggy beginning, trying to figure out what to do because trying to figure out, I was trying to make that Investiture Week I idea. I was trying to get the most out of that investiture week and those parties, and we have Alden's party now… and we're making a thing out of it. Andor Season 2 is a remarkable and moving work of art. It is one of the best all-time seasons of any show, and not just in Star Wars. The structure of every three episodes taking place in a different year, leading up to the events of Rogue One, could have felt disjointed. However, the season ends up feeling mostly seamless in its transitions and becomes a deeply satisfying continuation and conclusion to the story that began in Season 1.

While Season 2's structure overall works incredibly well, there are a few times where I could not help but think of the original five-season plan that Tony Gilroy had in mind. Tony Gilroy had a different plan for how Mon Mothma’s story turned out in Andor Season 2. There was a deleted scene in the series that added another layer to the character. However, the three-episode weekly release pattern meant that all these stories couldn’t be included in Gilroy’s series.

Caroline Blakiston played Mon Mothma in the original Star Wars films. Genevieve Reilly took over the role in Revenge of the Sith and Rogue One before she appeared in Andor. In Gilroy’s series, Reilly had a leading role, and it was unlike any version of Mon Mothma that we saw earlier.

That wasn’t a Jedi whispering ancient wisdom; it was probably Tony Gilroy giving the best piece of storytelling advice we’ve heard in years. And it wasn’t just lip service. The finale of Andor Season 2 proves that you don’t need a lightsaber cameo or a wheezing Sith Lord to create something unforgettable.

Instead of using Star Wars’ mythological cheat codes, Gilroy and writer Tom Bissell focused on emotional infrastructure, new terrain, and brave restraint. Vader’s absence wasn’t just a narrative decision; it was a quiet exposé of what’s wrong with modern franchise storytelling: too much nostalgia, too little originality.

Gilroy didn’t lean on capes and sabers to prop up the drama; he trusted his own narrative legs.

When Andor creator Tony Gilroy cast Elizabeth Dulau in early 2021, he knew he was getting a talented actor who had just graduated London’s Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (Rada). Andor season 2 writer Tom Bissell has just revealed a cut Mon Mothma scene that would have totally changed her story. Andor is undoubtedly Star Wars' best TV show, and episode 9 - in which Mon Mothma essentially launches the Rebel Alliance in a stirring speech - is a personal favorite. Last week, we learned one missing Mon Mothma scene from Andor would have seen her return to Chandrila to speak with Perrin, telling him he would have to look after Leida now.

Speaking to Backstory Magazine, Andor season 2 writer Tom Bissell has revealed more of this scene. It seems this would have completely turned Mon Mothma's story upside-down, revealing she could have trusted Perrin after all.

"That was gonna be an interesting moment. Tony [Gilroy] performed it - Perrin just saying, 'I knew what you were up to. This whole time. They talked to me, every week they'd interrogate me, I never said a word.

After obsessively hunting Diego Luna's Cassian Andor since the very first episode of Andor, Syril Karn finally got his hands on the Rebel pilot in season 2, episode 8 - but a moment's hesitation ended up costing him everything.

Towards the end of "Who Are You?," Syril learns the truth about the Empire's evil plans for Ghorman, and stumbles through the protestors in a daze before catching sight of Andor just as he's about to assassinate Dedra Meero.

Tony Gilroy was barely on set for “Andor” Season 2. The series’ head writer and showrunner finished his scripts about a week before the 2023 Writers Guild of America strike began, forcing writers into a state of “radio silence.” When the strike ended and Gilroy returned to work, something amazing waited for him: 12 fully shot episodes.

The fate of Cassian Andor was sealed in 2016’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, but Diego Luna would get the opportunity to revisit the character two more times with the Andor spin-off prequel on Disney+. Deadline reports on Luna’s bittersweet departure from a galaxy far, far away as the actor reflected on finishing the arc after this upcoming season of Andor.

On the red carpet at the premiere of the season at Hollywood’s El Capitan Theatre, Luna says,

According to Disney, the 12-episode season is divided into four three-episode chapters. The first chapter premieres on April 22, and new chapters of three episodes are released weekly until the finale.

Ahead of the April 22 premiere of Andor‘s second and final season on Disney+, the Rogue One: A Star Wars Story prequel’s first season is being made available on Hulu. The full first season is now streaming on the sibling Disney streamer until April 22, and episodes 1-3 are also available on the Disney+ YouTube channel.

The Lucasfilm series received a cross-platform push during its first season, too. The first two episodes of Season 1 ran on ABC, FX, Freeform and Hulu over the 2022 Thanksgiving holiday, coinciding with the season finale on Disney+.

Disney+ is teasing what’s in store for the upcoming much-anticipated, long-awaited second season of Andor, releasing the first minute-long trailer. The 12-episode first season wrapped up in November 2022. Season two (the final season) will be divided into four chapters, with the three-episode chapter one premiering on April 22, 2025.

Loosely based on Paul Theroux’s bestselling 1981 novel, “The Mosquito Coast” stars Justin Theroux, Melissa George, Logan Polish and Gabriel Bateman.
