‘Andor’: Mon Mothma Would’ve Been More Tragic Than Luthen if Tony Gilroy Hadn’t Deleted a Crucial Scene
Image
Andor season 2 focused more on Mon Mothma after showrunner Tony Gilroy gave her a crucial role. Mon becomes more involved in the Rebellion’s activities while trying to keep her involvement a secret from the Empire until she can no longer ignore the Emperor’s atrocities.

The second season gave Mon Mothma a tragic arc as she is forced to flee her home for the Rebellion. However, the arc could’ve been even sadder with one cut scene that Gilroy had originally planned to include in the series. Here is how the cut scene would’ve made Mon Mothma even more of a tragic figure than Luthen in Andor season 2.

Andor writer reveals Tony Gilroy cut a crucial Mon Mothma scene

Andor brought back Mon Mothma, played by actress Genevieve O’Reilly. Instead of using her as an expository character like previous Star Wars media, showrunner Tony Gilroy turned her into...

Andor Season 2 Writer Reveals Palpatine's Secret Connection to Key Finale Scene
Image
One of the writers behind Disney+'s Andor revealed Emperor Palpatine's secret impact on the show's dramatic finale arc. After five in-universe years hanging alongside Diego Luna's Cassian Andor as he rose the ranks from fledgling smuggler to Captain in the Rebel Alliance, fans took their eyes off the titular Star Wars hero for a moment in Season 2's final few episodes. The story of how Stellan Skarsgård's Luthen Rael came to be in the company of Elizabeth Dulau's Kleya was brought to light—a pair of characters who orchestrated much of the Rebel activity seen in the series.

And, as it turns out, the Emperor played a key role in the series finale arc between Kleya and Luthen, even though he was never seen on-screen. That is not to say the ruthless Sith lord's presence was not felt throughout Andor before that, but it was in...

“You Can’t Talk Revolution If There’s No Love Involved”: ‘THR Frontrunners’ Q&a With ‘Andor’ Star Diego Luna
Image
Yes, Andor is a Star Wars show with political overtones, the story about a rebel army slowly building and organizing to fight a fascist oppressor. Yes, there are laser gun battles and Tie fighters flying. But, as guests at a THR Frontrunners panel spotlighting the acclaimed Lucasfilm show learned, it’s also a show about love.

“You can’t talk revolution if there’s no love involved; here is something romantic and naïve behind the idea of revolution,” said Diego Luna, the actor who plays budding rebel, Cassian Andor, to the crowd at the San Vincente Bungalows in West Hollywood earlier in May. Showing support in the audience were Ariel Kleiman, who directed the first six episodes of the show, Andor writer Tom Bissell, and the show’s composer Brandon Roberts. Also in attendance were Ryan and Brett Bergman, the sons of Disney Entertainment co-chairman Alan Bergman.

“What drives revolution is that sense of love,...

Let Perrin be Mon Mothma's chaos agent in Ahsoka season 2
Image
While Andor ended its superb run, it's not a perfect show (though it nearly is). Because of the Season 2 structure, where they squished what would have been four seasons into one, some characters got their stories shortened. One was Perrin Fertha, Mon Mothma's supposedly deadbeat husband. I had suspected that he had more going for him, but it wasn't revealed in the show. Turns out, I was right!

Writer Tom Bissell revealed a cut scene for Perrin that would have changed Mon's story: He knew about her rebel activity the entire time and protected her. Bissell said, "That was gonna be an interesting moment. Tony Gilroy performed it — Perrin just saying, 'I knew what you were up to. This whole time. They talked to me. Every week, they'd interrogate me. I never said a word. You didn't trust me. You could've trusted me.' And the heartbreak she would feel in that moment,...

Andor: Cut Mon Mothma storyline changes her entire season 2 arc
Image
From getting her scenes cut in Revenge of the Sith to becoming a lead cast in what is undoubtedly the best Star Wars TV show, Genevieve O'Reilly's Mon Mothma has come a long way. Despite being a Rebel Alliance High Council member, Mon was barely noticeable in the prequels and was overshadowed by Padme Amidala and Bail Organa in the few episodes of The Clone Wars in which we see her.

But Andor forces you to sit up and take notice of this soft-spoken yet strong-willed Senator with irrefutable faith in democracy, who does not shy away from calling a spade a spade, or in her case, a genocide a genocide.

In Andor Season 2, Mon is rescued from the Senate by Cassian (Diego Luna) and taken to the Coruscant safehouse after her open defiance of the Empire in a rousing speech. From there, she is expected to make a...

Andor Showrunner Tony Gilroy Says There Were Early Discussions About A Princess Leia Cameo
Image
Andor showrunner Tony Gilroy has revealed that he did consider including a cameo from one of the original Star Wars trilogy's leads, Princess Leia Organa, in the second season, but the idea was ultimately scrapped.

"There were some conversations early on, there was much to be made. This is in the sketching stage," Gilroy told ScreenRant. "This is in the really soggy beginning, trying to figure out what to do because trying to figure out, I was trying to make that Investiture Week I idea. I was trying to get the most out of that investiture week and those parties, and we have Alden's party now… and we're making a thing out of it. And we were trying to find out on the timeline where she would be in the Senate."

While an appearance from either Luke Skywalker or Han Solo wouldn't have made much sense, Leia was already...

Andor season 2 was incredible, but I still wish we got to see these 4 storylines
Image
Warning: There are spoilers ahead for Andor season 2.

Andor Season 2 is a remarkable and moving work of art. It is one of the best all-time seasons of any show, and not just in Star Wars. The structure of every three episodes taking place in a different year, leading up to the events of Rogue One, could have felt disjointed. However, the season ends up feeling mostly seamless in its transitions and becomes a deeply satisfying continuation and conclusion to the story that began in Season 1.

While Season 2's structure overall works incredibly well, there are a few times where I could not help but think of the original five-season plan that Tony Gilroy had in mind. There are some storylines between or during each three-episode arc that I would have loved to see further explored. Given the nature of the Star Wars franchise, there is always a chance of these...

Tony Gilroy Changing ‘Andor’ Season 2 Release Format Ruined Mon Mothma’s Story in Deleted Scene
Image
Tony Gilroy had a different plan for how Mon Mothma’s story turned out in Andor Season 2. There was a deleted scene in the series that added another layer to the character. However, the three-episode weekly release pattern meant that all these stories couldn’t be included in Gilroy’s series.

Caroline Blakiston played Mon Mothma in the original Star Wars films. Genevieve Reilly took over the role in Revenge of the Sith and Rogue One before she appeared in Andor. In Gilroy’s series, Reilly had a leading role, and it was unlike any version of Mon Mothma that we saw earlier.

Tony Gilroy’s release schedule for Andor Season 2 ruined Mon Mothma’s story Genevieve O’Reilly as Mon Mothma in Andor | Credits: Disney+/Lucasfilm

The first season of Andor followed a weekly release pattern after dropping its first three episodes together. Season 2 followed a different release schedule for its twelve episodes.

Andor | The final episodes provide a powerfully emotional bridge to Rogue One
Image
The last three episodes of Andor season 2 provide an emotional closure for its characters – and a satisfying lead into 2016’s Rogue One.

Nb: The following contains spoilers for Andor seasons 1 and 2.

“The last act makes a film,” ran a terrific line in the 2002 film, Adaptation. “Wow them in the end, and you’ve got a hit.”

Andor season 2 may be a TV show rather than a film, but the sentiment applies: its final three episodes provide a powerful, emotionally satisfying send-off for creator Tony Gilroy’s Star Wars spin-off, its threads connecting forward to Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

While watching Andor’s final batch of episodes, I couldn’t help thinking about how organic and heartfelt the show has been, especially given the path it could have taken. This is, after all, a prequel to a prequel – a story that takes place before the events of Rogue One,...

“I would’ve brought them in”: Tony Gilroy Reveals Why ‘Andor’ Season 2 Finale Didn’t Feature Darth Vader
Image
Don’t play with all the toys…leave more in the toy box than you found. That wasn’t a Jedi whispering ancient wisdom; it was probably Tony Gilroy giving the best piece of storytelling advice we’ve heard in years. And it wasn’t just lip service. The finale of Andor Season 2 proves that you don’t need a lightsaber cameo or a wheezing Sith Lord to create something unforgettable.

Instead of using Star Wars’ mythological cheat codes, Gilroy and writer Tom Bissell focused on emotional infrastructure, new terrain, and brave restraint. Vader’s absence wasn’t just a narrative decision; it was a quiet exposé of what’s wrong with modern franchise storytelling: too much nostalgia, too little originality.

Gilroy didn’t lean on capes and sabers to prop up the drama; he trusted his own narrative legs.

‘Andor’ Creator Tony Gilroy on the Series Finale, Cassian’s [Spoiler], the Show’s ‘Controversial’ Set and His Next Film With Oscar Isaac
Image
Spoiler Alert: This story includes spoilers for the “Star Wars” series “Andor” and feature film “Rogue One,” both currently streaming on Disney+.

From its inception, “Andor” was designed by creator Tony Gilroy to chronicle what leads rebel spy Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) up to the events of the 2016 “Star Wars” feature film “Rogue One,” which Gilroy co-wrote. In that film, Cassian learns about a high-ranking Imperial officer, Galen Erso (Mads Mikkelsen), leaking a message to his daughter, Jyn (Felicity Jones), about the existence of a top secret super-weapon, aka the Death Star. Knowing he had to connect the numerous storytelling plot strands from “Andor” into the movie’s complicated plot made Gilroy anxious for years. It turns out, he needn’t have worried. “That shit laid down really clean,” he tells Variety with a grin. “It presented itself without the incredible amount of effort that was anticipated.”

The final three...

‘Andor’ Star Elizabeth Dulau Talks Kleya’s Necessary Choice and Being a Key Domino in Star Wars Lore
Image
[This story contains spoilers for Andor season two.]

When Andor creator Tony Gilroy cast Elizabeth Dulau in early 2021, he knew he was getting a talented actor who had just graduated London’s Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (Rada). But he soon realized that he actually hired a budding star who was worthy of significantly more screen time in season two. “By the time we finished season one, everyone on our whole show was just in awe [of Elizabeth]. We don’t have a moment of bad film on her,” Gilroy recently told The Hollywood Reporter.

In season one, Dulau’s character, Kleya Marki, was considered to be the “sorcerer’s apprentice” to Stellan Skarsgård’s Luthen Rael, who was a part-time antiquities dealer and a full-time shadowy leader of the emerging Rebellion. However, season two has now revealed their relationship’s profoundly tragic origin story. Luthen was once an Imperial Sergeant, and during a genocidal raid on adolescent Kleya’s homeplanet,...

One Cut Andor Scene Totally Changes Mon Mothma's Entire Story
Image
Andor season 2 writer Tom Bissell has just revealed a cut Mon Mothma scene that would have totally changed her story. Andor is undoubtedly Star Wars' best TV show, and episode 9 - in which Mon Mothma essentially launches the Rebel Alliance in a stirring speech - is a personal favorite. Last week, we learned one missing Mon Mothma scene from Andor would have seen her return to Chandrila to speak with Perrin, telling him he would have to look after Leida now.

Speaking to Backstory Magazine, Andor season 2 writer Tom Bissell has revealed more of this scene. It seems this would have completely turned Mon Mothma's story upside-down, revealing she could have trusted Perrin after all.

"That was gonna be an interesting moment. Tony [Gilroy] performed it - Perrin just saying, 'I knew what you were up to. This whole time. They talked to me, every week they'd interrogate me, I never said a word.

Andor Star Kyle Soller On Syril Karn's Fate During Episode 8's Devastating Battle - Spoilers
Image
After obsessively hunting Diego Luna's Cassian Andor since the very first episode of Andor, Syril Karn finally got his hands on the Rebel pilot in season 2, episode 8 - but a moment's hesitation ended up costing him everything.

Towards the end of "Who Are You?," Syril learns the truth about the Empire's evil plans for Ghorman, and stumbles through the protestors in a daze before catching sight of Andor just as he's about to assassinate Dedra Meero.

Karn brutally attacks the man he views as his sworn enemy, ultimately managing to gain the upper hand when they are both knocked down by a nearby grenade blast. Syril is about to shoot his nemesis, but Andor's question - "who are you?" - causes him to hesitate, and he is shot dead by revolutionary leader Carro Rylanze.

Andor Star Adria Arjona And Creator Tony Gilroy On Episode 3's Harrowing [Spoiler] Scene
Image
Andor has always been viewed as something of an outlier in the Star Wars universe for its more mature themes and serious, grounded vibe, but this week's three-episode season 2 premiere pushed the envelope to a place many found uncomfortable and maybe even unnecessary.

Spoilers follow.

In episode 3, Imperial officer, Lt. Krole (Alex Waldmann), shows up at the home of Bix Caleen (Adria Arjona), who has been working as an "undocumented" engineer on the agrarian planet Mina-Rau for the past year. Krole attempts to force himself on Bix, who manages to fight him off with a few blows to the head, killing him in the process.

Just to hammer home what viewers were witnessing, Bix shouts at another officer who orders her to surrender, “He tried to rape me!”

“I remember reading that, and within the truth of that moment of the abuse of power, being really scared to go into that scene,...

‘Andor’ Season 2 — instant Emmy predictions for the acclaimed Star Wars show

Star Wars has had a rough run of late — the last theatrical release in the franchise, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, was derided by longtime fans and underwhelmed at the box office in 2019 — save for one shining property: Andor, creator Tony Gilroy’s acclaimed exploration of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story breakout character Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) in the years before he helped steal the plans for the Death Star and jumpstart the Rebel Alliance. The Emmy Award-nominated series returns this week for its second and final season with rave reviews and building enthusiasm among its fans. 'Andor' Season 2's Rotten Tomatoes Score Reveals if the Finale Is Worth the Hype
Image
We're just one day away from the three-episode premiere of Andor Season 2 on Disney+, and the reviews are coming in fast for the finale of what's undoubtedly been one of the best Star Wars TV shows of all time. Does the conclusion live up to the expectations set by Season 1? According to Rotten Tomatoes, the answer is a resounding yes! Thus far, Season 2 has managed to surpass the score of its predecessor by two points, and is Certified Fresh with a 98% at the time of this writing.

"An important and subversive genre masterpiece about the fight for freedom," writes Joonatan Itkonen from Toisto.net, adding: "In just twelve episodes, it recaptures the voice of the downtrodden originally set forth by George Lucas in his Vietnam allegory that was A New Hope." Brendan Hodges from Next Big Picture echoed those sentiments, saying in their review:

‘Andor’ Season 2 Review: Still The Best That Disney’s Star Wars Has To Offer
Image
Although the story of Andor, as good as it is, has been told multiple times, I think it bears repetition because of how mind-blowing it actually is. Rogue One was undoubtedly fantastic, and appreciation for the work done by Gareth Edwards and his team has only grown with each passing year. But I don’t think you’d look at a cast that has Felicity Jones, Ben Mendelsohn, Donnie Yen, Mads Mikkelsen, and Forest Whitaker in it and decide to make an entire show around Diego Luna’s character, especially since they all died at the end of that film. On top of that, when the show was about to be released, excitement for anything new from the franchise was at an all-time low due to the laughably bad The Mandalorian Season 2, The Book of Boba Fett, and Obi-Wan Kenobi. However, as soon as we set foot into the incredibly...

Tony Gilroy on Crafting ‘Andor’ Season 2: ‘It Is Absolutely My Best Work’
Image
Tony Gilroy was barely on set for “Andor” Season 2. The series’ head writer and showrunner finished his scripts about a week before the 2023 Writers Guild of America strike began, forcing writers into a state of “radio silence.” When the strike ended and Gilroy returned to work, something amazing waited for him: 12 fully shot episodes.

“You’re always in the cutting room on a show, in a movie, and inevitably, you’re at the point where you say, ‘Man, I’d pay $50,000 if I could see my movie for the first time,'” Gilroy told IndieWire ahead of the show’s Season 2 premiere. “I got to watch all 12 episodes on the run with the freshest eyes I could ever imagine, and I got to watch it as the audience would see it.”

After binging the “rough, shaggy” cuts (an audience wishes — “Andor” will drop three episodes per week from April 22 through...

Image
Andor is set to return to Disney+ for its highly-anticipated second (and final) season on April 22, and Lucasfilm has now released the first official clip from the three-episode premiere.

In this action-packed preview, we see Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) attempting to escape from an Imperial facility (possibly a Star Destroyer) after commandeering a Tie Fighter. As Stormtroopers rush into the hangar and begin to open fire, Andor figures out how to use the craft's weapons and cuts down most of his enemies.

Only one bazooka-wielding trooper remains, but Andor is out of missiles.

Check out the clip at the link below, along with a new social media spot focusing on Ben Mendelsohn's returning Director Orson Krennic.

That could’ve gone smoother.

The fate of Cassian Andor was sealed in 2016’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, but Diego Luna would get the opportunity to revisit the character two more times with the Andor spin-off prequel on Disney+. I said goodbye to this character when we wrapped. I had a beautiful opportunity to talk to the crew, to talk to the cast. [Creator] Tony Gilroy gave these beautiful words, we had a drink, we hugged, we cried. I’m going to miss this family.”

He continues to say that he cherishes the show and the team has “delivered and that will stay there forever, but it’s the dynamic,...

Star Wars: Andor Season 2 Trailer And Poster Set The Stage For The Rebellion To "Fight The Empire!"
Image
Disney+ and Lucasfilm have shared a new trailer and poster for Andor season 2 (via SFFGazette.com) ahead of the show's long-awaited return on April 22.

This sneak peek sets the stage for the war between the Rebels and the Empire to be taken to the next level leading into Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

We see plenty of Ben Mendelsohn's villainous Director Orson Krennic as he continues to work on the Death Star and several other familiar faces...including a whole platoon of Kx-series security droids, at least of which must be K-2So.

Season 1 was a critical hit and excitement for this second batch of episodes (which had been on track to premiere last summer before 2023's Hollywood strikes) is through the roof.

Image
Diego Luna’s rebellion intensifies in the trailer for Season 2 of “Andor.”

The “Star Wars” series, which chronicles the events leading up to the 2016 feature film “Rogue One,” will stream on Disney+ beginning April 22.

The first season of the show — created and executive produced by “Rogue One” co-writer Tony Gilroy — takes place over the course of roughly a year in the life of Cassian Andor (Luna), as he transforms from a small-time criminal to a man prepared to join the fight against the Galactic Empire as the vestiges of the Rebel Alliance begin to form.

The trailer also introduces series newcomers Ben Mendelsohn and Alan Tudyk, each reprising their roles from “Rogue One” — respectively, the nefarious Imperial officer Orson Krennic and the acerbic reprogrammed Imperial droid K-2So. Andor Season 2: Tony Gilroy on Tom Bissell in the writer's room and more Yavin
Image
Andor Season 2 is the next Star Wars project scheduled for release, and the show's final season promises to be bigger and better, with stronger connections to Star Wars lore.

In a recently resurfaced 2022 interview with Collider's Steve Weintraub, taken before filming on Season 2 started, Gilroy discussed the addition of Tom Bissell to the show's writer's room. Bissell is a diehard Star Wars fan, something that's important to Season 2's success. Andor Season 2 will walk fans into the first scene of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and the series is set during the rise of the Rebellion, which means Season 2 has to touch upon several important events in canon.

Gilroy believes adding Bissell ensures the season will deliver on all fronts as the series heads to Rebel Headquarters on Yavin 4. Gilroy explains, "Tom Bissell is really cool and really, really interesting, versatile, really good writer. But also a very,...

After reprising his role as Star Wars villain Director Orson Krennic last year in The Bad Batch, it looks like Rogue One actor Ben Mendelsohn is eyeing a return to that galaxy far, far away for Andor Season 2. And now, in an interview with The Playlist, Mexican filmmaker Alonso Ruizpalacios — director of the last three episodes of Andor's upcoming series — has let slip that Mendelsohn is among the recognisable characters fans can expect to see when the show returns.

Whilst singing the praises of his experience working on Andor, Ruizpalacios paid tribute to the heavyweight actors he'd had chance to direct on the show, specifically naming “Stellan Skarsgård,...
