Review: ‘Tommy’s Honour’ Offers a Rousing Look at a Heroic Figure
I’ve never been one for golf — playing or watching. I know many who feel the same and many of those who found themselves becoming fans during Tiger Woods’ heyday anyway. You can’t blame them for it either. Celebrity, national pride, and the excitement surrounding both are tough to combat. The draw therefore became peoples’ desire to see what Tiger did: which tournaments he won, who he beat, and by what margin. Golf became secondary to this hero’s allure like many other sports before it throughout history. But this wasn’t the first (or surely the last) time this specific sport found that sense of enthusiasm beyond staunch practitioners. In nineteenth century Scotland “Young” Tom Morris did the same. Beyond increasing golf’s popularity, though, he also literally changed the game.

Now that’s actually something I can get behind. It’s a simplification, but discovering that golf...

‘The Collection’ Review: Amazon’s Sumptuous Fashion Drama Over-Accessorizes With Intrigue and Mansplaining
The Collection (2016)
“Fashion has the power to transform us. It’s not so much about who you are but who you want to be. Even those who hate fashion make a statement with what they wear, if only to say to the world, ‘I don’t give a damn.’”

Such are the wise words by fashion house owner Paul Sabine (Richard Coyle). If only Amazon‘s “The Collection” actually heeded them.

Set in Paris 1947, the atelier Paul Sabine House is tasked by a wealthy and powerful investor with restoring Paris as the haute couture capital of the world. The wartime German occupation of the city, however, has cast a long shadow, and our Parisians are having a hard time shaking off that oppression, the rationing mindset and past decisions.

First Trailer for 'Tommy's Honour' About the Scottish Founders Golf
The pride of a father. The love of a wife. The soul of a rebel. The heart of a champion. Roadside Attractions has debuted a trailer for a film titled Tommy's Honour, about the founders of the modern sport of golf. The film focuses on Tommy Morris, played by Jack Lowden, and his father Tom Morris, played by Peter Mullan, two golfing legends who helped make the sport into what it is today. Set in the 1800s, these two Toms helped redefine the sport at a time when Scottish golfers were considered low-class players. The cast includes Sam Neill, Ophelia Lovibond, Peter Ferdinando, Max Deacon and Paul Reid. This looks like a fine drama about a desire to rewrite the expectations of society, proving that anyone can be successful. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Jason Connery's Tommy's Honour, in high def from Apple: In every generation, a torch passes from father to son.

Watch: Trailer for Weird Sci-Fi Film 'The Call Up' About Virtual Reality
This time it's for real. Vertical Entertainment has released an official trailer for a sci-fi action film called The Call Up, from writer/director Charles Barker about a virtual reality video game that turns out to be more than just a simple, harmless video game. The story follows a group of gamers invited to participate in a brand new shoot-'em-up virtual reality experience, but they soon discover it may not be a "game" after all. This sounds like it's borrowing the Ender's Game concept and combining it with the virtual reality craze. The cast includes Max Deacon, Morfydd Clark, Ali Cook and Christopher Obi. It actually looks like it has some solid action, but I'm not sure if the rest will be any good. The suits look a bit cheesy. Take a look. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Charles Barker's The Call Up, in high def from Apple:...

Arriving at the test site, the group step into hi-tech gear and prepare for a revolutionary next-level gaming experience, that brings modern warfare to life with frightening realism. Unsuspecting gamers play a deadly multiplayer shooter in the Brit sci-fi offering, The Call Up. Ryan takes a look...

Philip K Dick once wrote that reality is that which, when you stop believing in it, refuses to go away. In The Call Up, a bunch of online shooter fanatics get caught in a virtual reality game that, even when they no longer want to play it, won’t be turned off.

This is the first feature from writer-director Charles Barker, and, just in time for Vr technology’s (apparent) second wind, The Call Up wades into the topic of gaming and the warping of reality. That is: what happens when a videogame becomes a little too realistic for comfort?

Set in an apparently deserted office block in New York, The Call Up sees a disparate group of strangers take part in a competition with an enticing star...

Steven Quale interview: Into The Storm, Final Destination 5
Director Steven Quale talks to us about his latest film Into The Storm, working on James Cameron's The Abyss, bad weather and more...

Steven Quale’s career seems to have been constantly submerged in water. Having worked with James Cameron back on The Abyss, their relationship has meant Quale’s involvement on multiple projects including Titanic and a co-director credit on the documentary Aliens Of The Deep. Quale’s solo feature directorial debut was on Final Destination 5, which wasted no time in plunging most of its cast into water, though they were mostly followed by rather heavy and deadly objects.

We caught up for a chat with Mr Quale to discuss his experiences of soaking actors in water and the challenges of filming a special effects heavy blockbuster, while managing to present a film with a new narrative perspective, as Into The Storm incorporates a first-person perspective into its story,...

Into the Storm movie review: all wet
A movie to make you despair of the found-footage conceit (if you weren’t already). Suddenly Twister looks like Shakespeare. I’m “biast” (pro): love Richard Armitage

I’m “biast” (con): nothing

(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)

It’s like Roland Emmerich made a preposterous two-and-a-half-hour climate-change disaster flick — *cough* 2012 *cough* The Day After Tomorrow *cough* — and then someone went in and cut out most of the cheesy melodrama: the subsumed personal issues that come to the fore in the face of certain death, the contrived heat-of-the-moment romances, the triumph-of-the-human-spirit moments when the music swells and the tears are jerked. Whoever did such a thing probably thought they were doing us a favor, but it turns out: not so much. Because what we’re left with, in Into the Storm, may not be risible Mystery Science Theater-worthy crap, but it’s still pretty bad,...

Into the Storm Review
Steven Quale’s first movie was Final Destination 5. Hailed as a slight return to form for a franchise bogged down by the sequel dogma of most protracted horror franchises, perhaps this spelled good things for Quale, maybe by upping the spectacle, action, and tension of a disaster flick? Into the Storm represents all those things; a perfect playground for an upcoming genre talent. Sadly, it rarely pays off on any promise – and reminds you that, actually, Final Destination 5 wasn’t all that good anyway.

In the American town of Silverton, it’s Graduation Day. But a bright future is darkened by black clouds, as the stormchaser team led by Pete (Matt Walsh) and Allison (The Walking Dead’s Sarah Wayne Callies) detect a massive storm system heading straight for Silverton. After the initial tornado hits, Gary (Richard Armitage) must rescue his son, Donnie (Max Deacon), before the next...

Samuel L. Jackson, Robert Downey Jr., James Spader, Paul Bettany, Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Elizabeth Olsen, Jeremy Renner, Mark Ruffalo, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and Chris Hemsworth in Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015)
Interviewing Richard Armitage is never less than a pleasure, and our chat with him and on-screen son Max Deacon for Into the Storm was no exception.

But aside from finding out which Hobbit cast members Armitage would take with him into a real-life storm, this interview was also notable for an intriguing titbit towards the end.

"I'm doing another movie after I've finished on stage," Armitage told us. "But I can't tell you what it is. But you'll know!"

Intriguing, no? The fact that he's so cagey about details suggests that this is a role with some form of Nda attached, which immediately makes us think blockbuster. So we at Digital Spy have put our deerstalkers on for a spot of what we'll call deductive speculation.

Given that Armitage appeared in 2011's Captain America: The First Avenger as Nazi spy and assassin Heinz Kruger, our first thought was that he...

Richard Armitage on The Hobbit stars he'd take Into the Storm
Into the Storm (2014)
Richard Armitage stars in this week's disaster drama Into the Storm as a single father fighting to protect his two sons – one of whom is played by Max Deacon – from a deadly and unprecedented cluster of tornadoes.

When Digital Spy caught up with the pair recently, we took the opportunity to ask Armitage which Hobbit cast members he would want with him in a real-life disaster situation.

Armitage and Deacon also discussed their favourite disaster movies, their most challenging days on set, and what they'd both do in a real crisis.

Into the Storm and the changing face of the disaster movie

"I suspect I'd be going in the opposite direction, but I'll be picking people up on the way," Armitage mused. "It's hard to predict, isn't it? You certainly hope that you have a survival instinct. I don't think...

Into the Storm review: Richard Armitage's Twister on steroids
Into the Storm (2014)
Director: Steven Quale; Screenwriter: John Swetnam; Starring: Richard Armitage, Sarah Wayne Callies, Matt Walsh, Max Deacon, Nathan Kress, Alycia Debnam Carey, Jeremy Sumpter; Running time: 89 mins; Certificate: 12A

The disaster movie has dazzled us with the biggest A-list talent (see Irwin Allen's Towering Inferno) and cutting edge CGI effects (Twister), so how best to reinvent a genre that's been reinterpreted from nearly every conceivable angle? Steven Quale's Into the Storm takes a leaf out of Cloverfield's book and anchors its story in the found footage aesthetic that's become a staple of 21st century cinema. Here the villain isn't a city-levelling monster, instead the film's protagonists battle an epic storm that tears through a small American town on the day of high school graduation.

Richard Armitage leads the cast as school vice principle Gary, who must fight through the elements to rescue his son Donnie (Max Deacon), a senior...

Into the Storm and the changing face of the disaster movie
Into the Storm (2014)
The disaster movie hits the next level a week from now with the release of Into the Storm, a drama that sees a tornado rip through a small American town on the day of high school graduation. Directed by James Cameron protégé Steven Quale, the film introduces the found footage aesthetic to a story of a father (Richard Armitage) desperately trying to save his son (Max Deacon). There are multiple perspectives juggled, too, notably a pair of redneck daredevils getting close to the action in a bid to make a viral video and a professional storm-chasing outfit led by Matt Walsh's documentary maker. Think of it as Twister turned up to 11.

"The journey all these characters go through, I was hoping to do that in a more intimate way to show a disaster as opposed to the wide, epic, sweeping shots that a cinematic movie would traditionally do," Quale tells Digital Spy.

Film Review: Failed ‘Twister’ Knockoff ‘Into the Storm’ is All Eyes, No Heart
Chicago – Early incarnations of “Godzilla,” for example, were so memorable because of the characters and its story. The “special effects” were laughable, but the films caught on despite it because they had heart.

Rating: 2.0/5.0

Fast forward to today when the reverse tends to happen. Many films overprioritize their special effects but forget to begin from a quality script and craft memorable characters. Without starting there, all you’ve got is an exotic Lamborghini on the outside with a lawnmower engine failing to chug it along. Though Hollywood is currently addicted to eye candy, special effects should be a complement rather than a replacement.

“Into the Storm” is directed by Steven Quale. We’ve only seen him in the director’s chair once before at the helm of “Final Destination 5,” but he also served as a visual effects supervisor on “Avatar.” “Into the Storm” opens with a tense and well-executed introductory scene,...

Into the Storm | Review
Storm Drain of the Century: The Disaster Film Gets a Retrofit

It’s unclear if there’s any real point to the rather silly conception of the seemingly overtly serious Into the Storm, a retrofitted disaster flick that mimics the narrative of Twister sans the notable cast and pesky bits of extraneous detritus, such as character development. From the director that brought you Final Destination 5 comes this rain soaked little windstorm that will evaporate from your memory as soon as you return to meteorological reality. You’re bound to see films that are much worse this summer, but maybe few that seem as keen to prey on the base notion that there’s a sizeable audience out there wanting to pay stiff ticket prices to see stuff get blown away. Since it is rated PG-13, you aren’t going to witness any of the real carnage that such natural...

‘Into the Storm’ Review: Life Is Good, This Is Bad
Into the Storm is uneventfully being dumped into theaters this weekend with a logline I won’t dare try to stretch into a lengthy synopsis. It reads as follows: “Storm trackers, thrill-seekers, and everyday townspeople document an unprecedented onslaught of tornadoes touching down in the town of Silverton.” At this point you may be finding yourself a bit perplexed, maybe even infuriated by the idea that out of the 10,000 scripts Warner Bros. likely receives every year, they chose this one to greenlight. But fear not readers, Into the Storm isn’t the unmitigated disaster it appears to be. It’s much worse. Directed by Steven Quale (whose directorial credits, Final Destination 5 and Aliens of the Deep, are often considered the universal symbols of prestige) the film opens with brothers Donnie (Max Deacon) and Trey (Nathan Kress) creating time capsules — short, reflective videos for their future selves to look back at in 25 years. It...

‘Into the Storm’ Review
Into the Storm is another found footage failure – a gimmicky natural disaster film that fails to provide exciting tornado action or impactful human drama.

In Into the Storm, Gary Morris (Richard Armitage) is a single parent of two teenage boys and Vice Principle at the local High School. In preparation for the school’s graduation ceremony, Gary’s sons, Donnie (Max Deacon) and Trey (Nathan Kress), have been tasked with compiling video interviews and stock town footage for a digital time capsule – until Donnie ditches his filmmaking assignment in favor of helping his crush, Kaitlyn (Alycia Debnam Carey), shoot a video scholarship application.

However, when a dangerous storm center forms above the town, disrupting the graduation ceremony, knocking out cell towers, and leaving a trail of devastation in its wake, Donnie and Kaitlyn become trapped under the debris – as the super-storm battering the ...

Film Review: ‘Into the Storm’ Maybe Needs Some Sharks
Chicago – What is there to say about a movie whose chief attraction lies in action set pieces involving CGI tornadoes? You either like this sort of thing or you don’t. I took my ten year old, who seemed to have a good time, and I know I felt pretty captivated by some of those visuals – but I’m a sucker for a thrill ride. Sound indecisive?

Rating: 2.5/5.0

Herein lies the problem. Even though the tornadoes don’t suck (pun intended), the rest of the film is generally as flat as the aftermath. The wisest move that “Braveheart” scribe and “Into The Storm” director Steven Quale makes is keeping the film to a tight 89 minutes and paying minimal attention to the less than original or engaging aspects of its plot.

A group of storm chasers led by Peter (Matt Walsh) are in the middle a very rough season. They have...

Into The Storm – The Review
In 1996 producer Steven Spielberg and director Jan de Bont jump-started the Summer box office (May 10, that’s still Spring, for goodness sake!) with the release of the thriller Twister (not based on the classic Milton Bradley game, of course). The film was a big hit and sparked a brief revival in the major studio disaster flicks similar to the Irwin Allen-produced crowd-pleasers of the 1970′s. Movie technology has advanced by leaps and bounds since then, and now mass-destruction is at the fingertips of most film makers, really just a few computer keyboard clicks away. The superheroes and giant robots have been trashing towns and cities long enough, it’s time for Mother Nature to strut her stuff once more. That may be part of the thought behind the new film Into The Storm, which has its roots in that almost 20 year-old flick and the proliferation of the basic cable...

'Into the Storm' (2014) Movie Review
It's not often the main characters in a movie are not played by the actors. I'd say it's even less frequent the main characters aren't even the special effects. That being said, I think Into the Storm may be the first film I've ever seen where the main characters are the cameras and yet, I still have a hard time calling this a found footage film, but the cameras are certainly the closest thing to actors you'll find in this travesty as CG thunder clouds and tornadoes make up the rest of the running time. In an era where made for TV movies such as this have found their place on the SyFy channel with the likes of Sharknado and Sharktopus vs. Pteracuda it's somewhat amazing to think a studio would even consider spending the additional money to beef up the effects and put it on the big screen. Watching...

Into the Storm Is a Witless, Wild Ride for Disaster-Film Junkies
Into the Storm (2014)
Into the Storm is at once one of the dumbest films you'll see this year and one of the scariest. Why is it that Hollywood finds it so hard to create a compelling story around weather disasters? Not unlike Twister, which a mere 18 years ago took one of the silliest of scripts and profitably wedded it to state-of-the-art CGI effects, Into the Storm seems to understand that even the dumbest of characters can be redeemed when faced with the imminent threat of getting vacuumed up into a terrifying funnel cloud. The film makes a few initial stabs at realism, as it starts off looking like it may be another found-footage flick. Practically all the characters are wielding cameras for different purposes as they converge on the doomed town of Silverton. There's Donnie (Max Deacon), an Av Club geek who's been tasked by his dad (Richard Armitage), the vice-principal of the local high school,...

Interview: Comic Actor Matt Walsh Goes ‘Into the Storm’
Chicago – Matt Walsh has been more visible lately, and it has much to do with his approach to character roles, beginning as Mike McLintock on the HBO series “Veep” and currently in the new film “Into the Storm.” For a Chicago native who began doing comedy improvisation here, he is moving on up.

Matthew Paul Walsh was born in Chicago, and graduated from Hinsdale High School. After college at Northern Illinois University, he became enamored of the improv scene in Chicago in the early 1990s, and studied under the master instructor Del Close. While dividing time between the Annoyance Theater and the ImprovOlympics (iO) in the city, he helped to found the “Uptight Citizens Brigade” (Ucb), which also featured Amy Poehler, Ian Roberts and Matt Besser. The troupe got its own show on Comedy Central, and has opened Ucb theaters in New York and Los Angeles.

Matt Walsh as Pete...

Review: Found Footage Tornado Disaster Flick 'Into The Storm'
"If we don't take care of nature, nature will take care of us," is the teenage pearl of wisdom that Donnie (Max Deacon) shares in "Into The Storm." This is indicative of the on-the-nose moralizing in this confused summer disaster flick that struggles to commit to what kind of movie it wants to be. One part environmental warning, another part PSA, and third part revelling in wind and rain-blown destruction, the movie is ultimately a string of set pieces barely held together by the thinnest of stories. It's mostly about putting people in uniquely extreme situations of life threatening danger, and perhaps this shouldn't be surprising given it comes from director Steven Quayle, the man who gave us "Final Destination 5." To his credit, and to screenwriter John Swetnam's ("Step Up All In"), there is a half-attempt made to create characters, as one dimensional as they are. The aforementioned Donnie is the stock angry teen,...

Review: 'Into The Storm' offers visceral thrills but can barely keep a straight face
Into the Storm (2014)
Steven Quale's movie before this was "Final Destination 5," which turns out to be a pretty great training ground for the specific skills he would need to pull off the admittedly impressive technical challenge that is "Into The Storm." When you're directing a "Final Destination" movie, you don't have a bad guy you can point the camera at. You don't have Michael or Jason or Freddy. Instead, you've got bad luck and the environment and timing and all these subtle things all in play, and that's what ends up killing the characters. You have to be able to show that, communicate the notion of how it's all connected. You have to give character to a malevolent force that has no actual shape or form. I think Quale did a fine job, and he was the one who got to shoot that great ending that brought the entire series into a different focus,...

‘Into the Storm’ Review: Mass Tornado Destruction Offers Minor Cinematic Distraction
Into the Storm (2014)
Whipping itself into a fairly futile frenzy, “Into the Storm” wants to be an Irwin Allen-style disaster movie for the YouTube and iPhone era. It incorporates footage ostensibly shot by the characters among more traditional camerawork and filming technique. The hybrid end results follows the misadventures of a group of storm trackers led by Matt Walsh, as documentary film maker Pete, and Sarah Wayne Callies, as meteorologist Allison, as they look for tornado trouble near the heartland small-town of Silverton. There's also, of course, footage shot by on-the-ground Silvertonians, including Max Deacon's Donnie, assigned by Richard Armitage, as his vice-principal dad Gary,...

Sarah Wayne Callies and Arlen Escarpeta Talk Into The Storm, Practical Effects vs. CG, Keeping Up with the Walking Dead Cast, and More
Faced with a furious two-mile wide tornado coming at you destroying everything in its path, most people would hunker down or run for their lives, unless they’re crazy enough to want to chase it. In Steve Quale’s cli-fi disaster thriller, Into the Storm, Sarah Wayne Callies and Arlen Escarpeta play professional storm chasers whose job is to get as close as possible to capture that once-in-a-lifetime shot. Allison (Callies) is a meteorologist tracking the path of the storm front while Daryl’s (Escarpeta) camera crew documents the dangerous, wildly erratic ride. Opening August 8th, the film also stars Richard Armitage, Matt Walsh, Alycia Debnam-Carey, Max Deacon, Nathan Kress and Jeremy Sumpter. At the film’s recent press day, Callies and Escarpeta discussed what attracted them to the project, their preparation for the roles, working with Armitage, the balance between practical and CG, bracing themselves against 100 mph wind and rain,...

Into the Storm - The Cast and Crew Speak!
Last year in Oklahoma a famous father-and-son team of storm chasers were heard screaming, “We’re going to die! We’re going to die!” on a Highway Patrol radio moments before they were indeed killed by one of the savage twisters they’d devoted their lives to following.

Storm chasers are single-minded in their pursuit of danger, willing to risk all for the thrill of the hunt, and in the new movie Into the Storm, Matt Walsh plays just such a character. He’s Pete, a TV reality star who endangers his crew when one of the biggest storms of all time hits the rural town of Silverton.

While the subject matter is serious, behind the scenes Walsh was dealing with a comedy of errors he couldn’t help but laugh at. In the film his fortress on wheels is Titus, a storm-proof tank that can roll its way through anything.

Into The Storm Clip Shows Sarah Wayne Callies and Richard Armitage Getting Too Close to an Incoming Tornado
We’ve come a long way since Twister’s flying cows. We’ve already seen loads of destruction in the first two trailers for Steven Quale’s Into the Storm and also read quite a bit about it in Dave’s set visit reports, but now it’s time to get a sense of what just a single one of these tornados is capable of in the very first clip from the film. When the town of Silverton is ravaged by a freak onslaught of twisters, Sarah Wayne Callies’ Allison, a meteorologist working alongside a team of storm chasers, is pretty much asking to have an up close and personal encounter with a vicious cyclone and, sure enough, she winds up getting closer than anyone. Hit the jump to see what happens in the first Into the Storm clip. The film will arrive in theaters on August 8th in 2D and IMAX,...

Off camera, Kress spoke to our select group of journalists visiting the Detroit set about his camera work, just how the found-footage aspect would be used, and his character's relationships. He also commented on his reaction to ending iCarly. Also starring Richard Armitage, Sarah Wayne Callies, Matt Walsh, Alycia Debnam-Carey, Arlen Escarpeta, Max Deacon, Jeremy Sumpter, Kyle Davis, and Jon Reep, Into the Storm opens August 8th.
