As the fall festivals begin to roll out their lineups (a phrase you’ll be seeing a lot of on IndieWire in the coming days), a word of both caution and delight: don’t forget about the festival films that have already premiered elsewhere, from Sundance to Cannes. Future Frames, a program for up-and-coming European filmmakers, is celebrating its 10th anniversary at Karlovy Vary Film Festival next week. So far, 104 filmmakers from 29 European countries have taken part. Its alumni have gone on to direct features that have appeared at major festivals worldwide.
The initiative, which is organized by European Film Promotion and Karlovy Vary, gives filmmakers the opportunity to present their short films at this prestigious A-list festival, and helps them build an international network.
Four years after his participation in the Future Frames program, Adam Martinec from the Czech Republic returns to Karlovy Vary with his first full-length film “Our Lovely Pig Slaughter,” which is screening in the Crystal Globe competition.
Other directors have been successful too with their first or second feature-length films, such as Halfdan Olav Ullman Tøndel from the first Future Frames group, whose debut film “Armand” was presented with the Camera d’Or at this year’s Cannes.

Saoirse Ronan (Lady Bird) has signed on to star in Bad Apples, a project that’s described as “a biting satirical comedy with thriller elements”. Exclusive: Saoirse Ronan (Foe) has found her next project in Bad Apples, a biting satirical comedy with thriller elements, for which HanWay Films is launching worldwide sales at AFM. Marking the English language debut of Swedish writer-director Jonatan Etzler (One More Time), the film to be produced by Pulse Films is targeting a UK shoot — under an Equity contract — in spring 2024.
Written by Jess O’Kane, Bad Apples adapts Rasmus Lindgren’s debut novel De Oönskade. The film tells the story of Maria (Ronan), a primary school teacher doing her best to inspire a class of 10-year-olds but unable to because of one unruly and chaotic student. With her career in question and the child’s behavior spiraling, she makes a series of bad decisions that lead to her accidentally taking and locking this “bad apple” in her home. Maria tries desperately to backtrack, but when the class starts flourishing and...

One More Time is a Swedish film directed by Jonatan Etzler and starring Hedda Stiernstedt and Maxwell Cunningham.
From Sweden comes this “teen” comedy in a sort of Back to the Future… Swedish style.
Interesting for its exotic touch. In terms of story and construction, not groundbreaking, but it’s watchable.
One More Time (2023) Movie Review
With a “Hollywoodish” starting point, One More Time revisits the teen comedy and the 80s theme we’ve seen so many times before. It does it with the grace of applying a photography of the 80s to reminiscent scenes. It’s funny, yes… but it remains somehow in the picturesque, not working well enough to make it really interesting.
It’s not a comedy to crack up, but a rather “European” comedy that falls somewhere between treating the characters with the respect they deserve and falling into that trivial side more typical of the genre.

Netflix has greenlit Swedish comedy film “One More Time” with Hedda Stiernstedt (“Beforeigners”) in the leading role.
Jonatan Etzler will make his directorial feature debut with the film, which is set to hit Netflix in 2023.
In “One More Time,” Stiernstedt plays 40-year-old Amelia who is hit by a bus on her birthday. When she wakes up, she suddenly finds the year is 2002 and Amelia is 18 again – allowing her to right all the mistakes she made the first time round.
But as she finds herself stuck in a “Groundhog Day” time loop – waking up every morning on her 18th birthday – she realizes there’s something else going on that will need to be fixed before she can leave the past behind forever.
“I am so excited for this project to come alive,” said Stiernstedt. “The timing for a retrospect lookback on the early 2000s feels right and diving into that era...

Catherine Hardwicke became a trailblazer for female directors after leading “Twilight” to global success; however, ten years after the first film came out, she says there’s still not enough women working behind the camera.
“There’s still a lot of work to do because we’ve got to get to both sides of the camera; we’ve got to get more representation in all the categories,” Hardwicke Told Variety at the 45th Student Academy Awards ceremony held at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills. “We’ve got a lot to say, and we’ve had a long time where we haven’t gotten to have our voices back there.”
Hardwicke, along with Patricia Riggen, Kumail Nanjiani and Arthur Dong, presented awards at Thursday’s Student Academy Award ceremony, which highlighted some of the best student films from around the world in animation, alternative filming, documentary filming and narrative filming.
