Mike Flanagan has brought the curtain down on the inaugural SXSW London with the U.K. premiere of his latest feature “The Life of Chuck.”
Despite the feature being the filmmaker’s first major foray away from horror, in a wide-ranging Q&a before the screening at London’s Barbican Centre Flanagan discussed his work in the genre (and love of it), his ongoing collaborations with Stephen King and even offered some news information about his upcoming “Carrie” TV series.
On the ongoing shift in perception towards horror, Flanagan said that the genre “tends to struggle to get credibility,” arguing that for each cycle of breakout titles — and even Oscar wins such as “Get Out” — “a lot of people outside the genre remain perpetually surprised” by its success. “Every now and then, when you see Jordan Peele win an Academy Award, everyone talks about how this legitimized the horror genre,...

“Adolescence” has been praised by London Mayor Sadiq Khan for helping bring the subject of violence against women and the dangers of social media into the limelight.
Speaking to Variety on the sidelines of the inaugural SXSW London, where he gave the opening speech, Khan said that there was an “epidemic of violence against women and girls” in the U.K., citing statistic from 2019 and 2020 that asserted “every three days a woman is killed at the hands of a man.”
While he said there was obviously a major part to be played by criminal justice, he noted that it was also hugely important for it to be address in educational terms in schools, highlighting various London initiatives, including one for teachers to use inside classrooms.
“Because I’m afraid boys in particular need to be taught about healthy relationships, about how to respect girls, but also about stoicism about resilience,...

London Mayor Sadiq Khan has used the opening day keynote of the inaugural SXSW London to criticize an “inward-looking mentality,” “uncertainty and political turmoil” in the U.S.
As he laid out why London is a “creative hotbed, a gateway to the world and a hub for talent, trade, tech and innovation,” Khan threatened to reopen rifts between himself and Donald Trump.
“We believe we can do business in a way that achieves commercial gains at the same time as advancing the common good,” he said of the city over which he has presided for nearly a decade. “So at the time when there’s so much uncertainty and political turmoil across the pond, defined by an inward looking mentality, I’m going to reach out to international investors, businesses and creators to say that London offers you the opposite.”

The inaugural SXSW London has officially been opened by London mayor Sadiq Khan.
In a speech at the Truman Brewery in the creative neighborhood of Shoreditch on Monday morning, Khan hailed London as a “creative hotbed,” a “gateway to the world,” and a “hub for talent, trade, tech and innovation.”
He also used to opportunity on stage as a pitch to lure investment to the British capital by highlighting what he described as the “uncertainty and political turmoil” and an “inward-looking mentality” in the U.S., and taking aim at the tariffs imposed by Donald Trump since he started his second terms as president.
“London is somewhere that is resolutely pro-business, pro-growth and pro-freedom of expression. And following new trade deals with India, the U.S. and the E.U. — which mean the UK is tearing down barriers to trade, not putting up walls — there’s never been a better time to come and create,...

The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, is under investigation after accepting free tickets to a Taylor Swift concert.
Khan, who has held the high-profile position in the British capital for nine years now, reportedly accepted £3000 (around $3,600) worth of Swift gig tickets when she was in London on her Eras Tour last August.
A member of the Labour Party, Khan will be investigated by a governing body called the Greater London Authority (Gla), which has been called in at the request of the Tories to probe a potential breach of the rules (ones relating to politicians accepting gifts, often a catalyst for controversy in British politics). The standard regulation is that ministers are allowed to keep gifts, but they must declare them.
The Gla’s monitoring officer confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter on Friday that three out of four allegations against the Mayor do not justify further investigation, including his declaration...

London Mayor Sadiq Khan has wasted no time in renewing his row with Donald Trump.
Just moments after securing a sweeping victory over Kamala Harris in the U.S. election, Khan declined to fall in line with other world leaders in congratulating Trump.
Instead, the Labour politician put into writing why he considers that Londoners have values that are the antithesis of Trump’s policies.
“An important reminder today for Londoners: our city is—and will always be—for everyone,” he wrote on X (formerly Twitter). “We will always be pro-women, pro-diversity, pro-climate and pro-human rights.”
Khan added: “These are some of the values that will continue to bind us together as Londoners.”
The message contrasted with the tone of Keir Starmer, the UK prime minister and leader of the Labour Party. “I look forward to working with you in the years ahead,” said Starmer. “As the closest of allies,...

Taylor Swift’s police escort during her Wembley Stadium concerts in London this summer was approved after pressure from the UK government’s top lawyer, The Times of London reports.
Following a furor over government figures receiving free tickets to see Swift perform on her record-breaking Eras tour, the newspaper reports that Home Secretary Yvette Cooper and London mayor Sadiq Khan both urged the Metropolitan Police to give Swift taxpayer-funded heightened protection during her visit to the capital.
The Times reports that the Metropolitian Police warned that such Vvip protection would breach long-standing protocols: such a service is normally available only to senior cabinet ministers and members of the royal family. It reports that the government’s senior lawyer, attorney-general Lord Harmer Kc, was recruited to put extra pressure on the police force.

South by Southwest is heading to London.
The event, which bills itself as “the world’s leading festival celebrating the convergence of creativity, culture and technology,” is expanding with SXSW London in June 2025.
The move gives SXSW, which was founded in 1987 in Austin, a presence in Europe. SXSW previously expanded into the Asia Pacific region, with SXSW Sydney, in 2023. Organizers said each of these events will feature “their own distinct flavor,” making SXSW “an indispensable three-stop tour for the global creative community.”

London Mayor Sadiq Khan is saying no to a version of the Msg Sphere. On Monday, the mayor rejected plans to bring a version of the entertainment venue to Olympic Park over concerns of light pollution, the high electric cost, and the impact on nearby heritage sites.
“London is open to investment from around the world and Sadiq wants to see more world-class, ambitious, innovative entertainment venues in our city,” said a spokesperson for the mayor to The Standard. “But as part of looking at the planning application for the Msg Sphere,...

London mayor Sadiq Khan has shot down plans for a local venue identical to Las Vegas’ new Msg Sphere, The Standard reports.
After Madison Square Garden Entertainment opened the doors to their $2.3 billion sphere in September, the company was keen on making Stratford, London the next location for one of its ultra-futuristic, high-tech domes. But Khan rejected the proposal, reportedly citing the potential light pollution, whopping electricity bills, and threat to local historical sites.
“London is open to investment from around the world and Sadiq wants to see more world-class, ambitious, innovative entertainment venues in our city,” a representative told The Standard. “But as part of looking at the planning application for the Msg Sphere, the Mayor has seen independent evidence that shows the current proposals would result in an unacceptable negative impact on local residents.”

Dame Joan Collins has issued a complain to Sadiq Khan after being almost knocked down by a cyclist.
The Dynasty actor, 89, was getting out of a taxi in Covent Garden when she says she was “crashed into” by a “masked cyclist with no lights and weaving on the pavement”.
The incident prompted her to post an Instagram message to Mayor of London to “do something” about cyclists who ‘consider themselves above the law”.
“Getting out of a #blackcab on the way to @rules_restaurant, we discovered #maidenlane was closed to all traffic,” she wrote on Thursday (23 February).
“However, that didn’t stop a masked #cyclist with no lights and weaving on the pavement from crashing into me, almost knocking me over. How much longer must we live with closed roads and cyclists who consider themselves above the law?
She continued: “Why don’t you do something @mayorofldn @sadiq before this...

Jeremy Clarkson has claimed that James May has been influenced by “lefties” as he criticised his The Grand Tour co-host’s support of 20mph speed limits.
Last week, May voiced his support for proposed plans to make 20mph the default speed on new or redesigned urban streets, as well as in residential areas.
Appearing on the Today programme on Radio 4, May said that he “hates to say I’m very right-on”, adding that he “would agree that a blanket 20mph would probably be a little bit knuckle-headed, but in a lot of urban places, city centre, towns and villages, actually 20mph makes perfect sense”.
Writing in his column in The Sun, Clarkson hit out at the comments from “m’colleague” May, suggesting that the former Top Gear host was now backing “leftie” plans.
“Of course, you’re thinking that James May would say that,” Clarkson wrote. “He’s known as...

Jeremy Clarkson’s controversial newspaper column about Meghan Markle has become the Independent Press Standards Organisation’s most complained about article.
The column, which was published in The Sun on Friday 17 December, had received more than 17,500 complaints by 9am on Tuesday the following week.
“We will follow our usual processes to examine the complaints we have received,” an Ipso spokesperson told the Pa news agency.
“This will take longer than usual because of the volume of complaints.”
The article was removed from The Sun’s website at Clarkson’s request following the backlash, a spokesperson for the publication said.
The spokesperson added that the number of complaints would be subject to change.
The number also surpassed the total number of complaints the media regulator received in 2021, which was 14,355.
In the article, the former Top Gear presenter said that he “hated” Meghan Markle.

The row surrounding Jeremy Clarkson’s column about Meghan Markle has continued this week, with the former Top Gear presenter widely condemned for his remarks.
In his op-ed for The Sun, published on Friday (16 December) the 62-year-old wrote that he dreamt of the day Markle would be made to parade naked through Britain while the crowd chanted “shame” and threw “excrement” at her.
Clarkson claimed that “everyone who’s my age thinks the same way”.
The Sun has now removed Clarkson’s comment piece from its website. “In light of Jeremy Clarkson’s tweet he has asked us to take last week’s column down,” the page now reads.
A number of fellow celebrities and public figures, including London mayor Sadiq Khan and Scotland’s first minister Nicola Sturgeon, have criticised Clarkson.

Former “Top Gear” presenter Jeremy Clarkson is engineering an apology after penning a controversial op-ed on Netflix docuseries “Harry & Meghan.”
Clarkson wrote a column for The Sun referencing a “Game of Thrones”-esque fate for Meghan Markle in his fantasies. “At night, I’m unable to sleep as I lie there, grinding my teeth and dreaming of the day when she is made to parade naked through the streets of every town in Britain while the crowd chants ‘Shame!’ and throw lumps of excrement at her,” Clarkson wrote of Markle.
“The Grand Tour” host compared Markle to Scotland’s First Minister Nicole Sturgeon and serial killer Rose West.
He added that “everyone who’s my age thinks the same way” about the Duchess of Sussex, noting, “I hate her on a cellular level.”
Clarkson has since taken to Twitter to apologize amid backlash.

Jeremy Clarkson has issued a statement following his inflammatory comments about Meghan Markle in a column for tabloid The Sun.
On Monday, the “Clarkson’s Farm” presenter shared a statement on social media, saying he is “horrified to have caused so much hurt.”
“Oh dear. I’ve rather put my foot in it,” Clarkson tweeted. “In a column I wrote about Meghan, I made a clumsy reference to a scene in Game of Thrones and this has gone down badly with a great many people. I’m horrified to have caused so much hurt and I shall be more careful in future.”
In Clarkson’s Dec. 16 column, titled “One day, Harold the glove puppet will tell the truth about A Woman Talking B*ks,” the former “Top Gear” presenter wrote of Markle: “I hate her. Not like I hate [Scottish National Party leader] Nicola Sturgeon or [British serial killer] Rose West. I hate her on a cellular level.

Taylor Swift’s partner Joe Alwyn has been listed as a co-writer on a new track from her forthcoming album Midnights.
“Sweet Nothing” will be released on Friday 21 October along with the highly anticipated album.
Alwyn, an actor who recently starred in BBC drama Conversations with Friends, has been dating Swift for over five years.
He has previously appeared on writing credits for songs from Folklore and Evermore, but under the pseudonym of William Bowery.
On the new track, only Swift and Bowery appear as writers, unlike the majority of the album tracks that include several songwriter co-credits.
Across the album, Swift’s long term friend Zoe Kravitz is listed as a writer, as well as Lana Del Rey, who features on “Snow on the Beach”.
However Swift appears alone on credits of “Vigilante S***” which she apparently wrote by herself.

Charles III has officially been proclaimed the King of the United Kingdom and fourteen Commonwealth realms during a meeting of the Accession Council in London on Saturday morning. It is the first time in history the ceremony has ever been televised.
U.K. networks including BBC, ITV and Sky broadcast the ceremony live at 10Am local time as did U.S. networks including NBC, where Savannah Guthrie was anchoring for an early morning special of the “Today Show.”
Broadcasting the Accession Council ceremony is significant and, according to historian Vernon Bogdnaor “a sign of the times that the monarchy has to adapt to a more open and less deferential society,” as he told BBC News.

London, Sep 10 (Ians) The England and Wales Cricket Board (Ecb) has expressed its desire to hold Indian Premier League (Ipl) games in the country in the future as the lucrative domestic T20 tournament looks to expand, said a report in mirror.co.uk quoting the Telegraph.
New Ecb chair Richard Thompson has drawn comparison with the NBA and NFL, who play some of their games in the UK, and hoped that England could stage Ipl matches in the future as well, with the cricket’s governing body in the country hoping to double attendances from two million to four million.
“The NBA and NFL come here, so why can’t we host the Ipl? The Ipl has grown its window by another three weeks and I don’t think it cannibalises other competitions because (many England) players are playing in it anyway,” Thompson was quoted as saying in the report.

Some 16 cities across the U.K. have thrown their hat in the ring to host the 2023 Eurovision Song Contest, which can’t be held in Ukraine due to security concerns.
After weeks of discussions, it was revealed on Monday that the U.K. would host the event on behalf of the war-torn nation — and the idea has evidently landed well with cities all around the country. Not even six hours since the news broke, the European Broadcasting Union (Ebu), which organizes the contest, said in a statement that 16 cities plan to bid.
“Bidding is expected to be competitive, with several mayors, councillors and MPs already informally expressing an intention to bid, including representatives from: Aberdeen, Belfast, Birmingham, Brighton, Bristol, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Manchester, Leeds, Liverpool, London, Newcastle, Nottingham, Sheffield and Wolverhampton,” said the Ebu.

Update: The first main event of Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations concluded shortly after 1pm local time in London today. Eyes were on the iconic balcony at Buckingham Palace where the monarch made her first appearance at about 12:30pm on a beautiful day one might call fit for a queen. She has rarely been seen in public of late owing to health problems in the past year. From her vantage point, she inspected the troops with the Duke of Kent as the Trooping the Colour neared its conclusion.
At just before 1pm local, the queen was joined by her family including Prince Charles, Prince William and his wife the Duchess of Cambridge and their three children, as well as several other royals. The queen’s grandson Prince Harry and his wife, Meghan, were in attendance but not seen as they watched the Trooping the Colour from the Major General’s office.
