- In May 2016, he became the first Muslim mayor of London, England.
- His school's director, Naz Bokhari, was the first Muslim headteacher at a UK secondary school. He studied maths and science at A-level, with plans to become a dentist. He became interested in law because of a teacher who told him "you're always arguing", and the TV series "LA Law". He studied law at the University of North London.
