In May 2016, he became the first Muslim mayor of London, England.

His school's director, Naz Bokhari, was the first Muslim headteacher at a UK secondary school. He studied maths and science at A-level, with plans to become a dentist. He became interested in law because of a teacher who told him "you're always arguing", and the TV series "LA Law". He studied law at the University of North London.

He was one of eight children. His parents were Pakistani immigrants, a bus driver and a seamstress, living on a southwest London housing estate.

As an MP, he has represented Tooting in south London since 2005.

The Rt. Hon. Khan was awarded the Knight Bachelor of the Order of the British Empire in the 2025 King's New Years Honours List for Political and Public Service. He is the Mayor of London in London, England.
