Action Thriller The Furious Is the Perfect Cross Between Taken & The Raid
Image
An upcoming action thriller could very well be what every action movie fan has been waiting for. Sounding like the perfect cross between Liam Neesons 2008 hit Taken and director Gareth Evans The Raid, the movie boasts an incredible cast of martial arts actors with enviable action movie pedigree, a filmmaker with a penchant for stunts, and an exquisitely no-nonsense plot that should allow for the punches, kicks, and everything else in between to fly hard and fast.

Titled The Furious (which should tell you everything you need to know about what were in for), the action outing is all set to be helmed by Tanigaki Kenji, who is best known for his stunt work in the likes of the Donnie Yen movie Raging Fire, G.I. Joe spin-off Snake Eyes, and this years martial arts hit Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In. Without further ado, you can check out the synopsis for The Furious below,...

Film Review: ‘The Raid 2’ is Must-See for Martial Arts Action Fans
Chicago – Two years ago, the Indonesian film, “The Raid: Redemption”, smacked action movie fans upside the head. To briefly sum it up, it was nuts. The straight-forward plot took a backseat to some amazing stunt work, an insane amount of creative choreography and in-your-face violence. There’s no need to worry about the sequel, “The Raid 2,” not living up to the original.

..since the highly-anticipated follow up is bigger and faster and even offers an in depth story to wrap your brain around – while getting hit upside the head once again.

Rating: 4.5/5.0

Taking place a mere two hours after the previous film, we catch up with battered rookie Swat member, Rama (Iko Uwais), who’s brought in corrupt cop, Wahyu (Pierre Gruno), and is now being taken in by a mysterious group within the police force that has a specific focus. While they commend Rama for a job well done,...

The Raid 2 Review
[This is a re-post of my review from the 2014 Sundance Film Festival. The Raid 2 opens today in limited release.] When Gareth Evans’ The Raid premiered at the 2011 Toronto International Film Festival, audiences were floored. It was as if someone had smacked us in the face about 800 times, and showed us that the action being churned out by Hollywood wasn’t half as effective as it could be. No amount of CGI could ever pack the punch of a perfectly choreographed, perfectly shot, and perfectly edited fight scene. The original’s barebones plot allowed the movie to mainline the action and get the adrenaline pumping. It also created high expectations for The Raid 2. Whereas the first movie was mean and lean, the sequel is epic and explosive with a twisting crime drama serving as the backdrop for some of the best action scenes you’ll ever see. The violence is brutal; the set pieces are brilliant; and the movie hits so hard that your grandchildren will have bruises. Picking...

Gareth Evans Offers Bloody First Look At The Raid 2: Berandal
Welsh writer-director/Indonesia resident Gareth Evans burst onto the world stage in a blaze of badass glory in 2012 with the martial arts action epic The Raid: Redemption. The fast-paced and stunningly violent feature won enthusiastic reviews from such illustrious festivals as the Toronto International Film Festival, Sundance, New Directors/New Films, and SXSW. As critics and action-movie fans cheered, English-language remake and sequel were promised before the film even made its theatrical debut! Earlier this year, Evans took to Twitter to unfurl some much-anticipated plot details about his sequel. He revealed the story of The Raid 2: Berandal would begin just two hours after the brutal and bittersweet end of the first film, with Rama (Iko Uwais), Bowo (Tegar Satrya) and Wahyu (Pierre Gruno) finding a new world of trouble. Considering "berandal" translates loosely to gangsters, expect more insane gunplay and mind-boggling martial arts. In the thick of production, Evans...

The Raid: Redemption Sequel Berandal to Take Place 2 Hours After Original Movie
The Raid 2 (2014)
Back in February, we reported that Sony Pictures acquired the rights to a sequel for the popular action-thriller The Raid: Redemption. We haven't heard much about this follow-up, entitled Berandal since then, except that Gareth Evans is returning to direct. Yesterday, the filmmaker teased new details regarding Berandal through his Twitter account, revealing the story will take place just hours after The Raid: Redemption's ending, and that production is scheduled to take place very soon.

Ok Raid 2 tidbit, we start shooting on January 19th and the first scene takes place 2hrs after the first film ends.

— Gareth Evans (@ghuwevans) January 2, 2013

Iko Uwais is believed to reprise his role as Rama in Berandal, although no further casting details have been revealed. With a production start date just weeks away, hopefully more details will be unveiled regarding this action-packed follow-up.

The Raid: Redemption was released March 23rd, 2012 and stars Iko Uwais,...

Raid: Redemption, The | Review
The most impressive piece of cinema I have seen in a very long time just so happens to be one of the most violent. Consider this a fair warning, The Raid: Redemption is not for the faint of heart. Viewers should also take into consideration that a film with such a relentless, rapid-fire pacing of fight sequences will certainly not focus much on narrative or character development. A Swat team led by Lieutenant Wahyu (Pierre Gruno) storms a dilapidated Jakarta apartment building in order to take down an evil drug lord, Tama (Ray Sahetapy). One of the police officers is Rama (Iko Uwais), who is about to become a father. We should instantly recognize from this fleeting tidbit of background information that Rama has something worth fighting for. This also reveals Rama as strongest candidate to be the hero of the story; which is somewhat unfortunate because since the cast...

‘The Raid: Redemption’ offers a rare glimpse of Indonesian martial arts – and politics
The Raid: Redemption aka Serbuan maut

Written and Directed by Gareth Evans

Indonesia, 2011, imdb

For the martial arts aficianados out there, don’t even bother reading this review, just go to the theatre now. The Raid: Redemption is everything that you have heard it is and more. Offering a rare glimpse of the Indonesian martial art style Pentjak Silat, the film is one long, almost continuous combat sequence, with all the fights performed at mach speed by a stunt team that make Tony Jaa’s unit look like conservative wimps. Many of the fights are done with one or both fighters holding knives, but if anything they fight faster with knives than with empty hands.

Don’t ask, just go.

*****

Ok. Everyone else, let’s talk about Roger Ebert, who has eviscerated this film not once, but twice, first giving it one star and then expanding his original review in...

Big Easy Express will screen on Saturday, March 17. The program will also include the world premiere of Columbia Pictures and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures' 21 Jump Street, screening in the Centerpiece slot on Monday, March 12. The 2012 lineup continues the SXSW tradition of celebrating ambitious experimentation with risk takers both in front of and behind the camera, and a deep immersion into cultural touchstones. The Midnighters feature section and the Short Film program will be announced on February 8.

Drew Goddard
Attendees of South by Southwest 2012 are in for a treat. 130 feature films will screen at the Austin, Texas festival taking place March 9-17. Among them are 65 World Premieres, 17 North American Premieres and 10 U.S. Premieres. The organization already announced [1] Drew Goddard and Joss Whedon's The Cabin in the Woods would open the festival (the movie is phenomenal [2]) and today the majority of the remaining line up has been revealed. One of the highlights is the unbelievably smart and hilarious 21 Jump Street, directed by Phil Lord & Christopher Miller. Both of those are World Premieres. Other highlights include The Hunter, Killer Joe, The Babymakers, frankie goes boom, God Bless America, The Imposter, The Raid, Bernie and Casa de mi Padre just to name a few. After the jump, read descriptions of all the films that have been announced so far. Before I copy and paste the rest of the list, a few minor notes.
