Kendrick Lamar was top winner at the 2025 BET Awards, held in Los Angeles Monday night.

The rapper took home the awards for album of the year for Gnx, best male hip-hop artist, video of the year for “Not Like Us” and best collaboration alongside Sza for “Luther.” Lamar also shared the award for video director of the year with his longtime creative partner Dave Free.

Sza and Chris Brown won best female and male R&b/pop artists, respectively. Doechii also won the award for best female hip-hop artist. During the latter’s acceptance speech, the rapper called out President Donald Trump for the “ruthless attacks that are creating fear and chaos in our communities in the name of law and order” amid protests against unlawful immigration raids in Los Angeles.

Other winners included Leon Thomas for best new artist, Denzel Washington for best actor and Cynthia Erivo for best actress.

The 2025 BET Awards turns 25 and has a big celebration in store with Kevin Hart set as host.

Hart will present the culture’s biggest night live from the Peacock Theater in Downtown Los Angeles.

Mariah Carey, Jamie Foxx, Kirk Franklin, and Snoop Dogg will be honored with the 2025 Ultimate Icon Award.

The BET Awards will continue as planned amid Los Angeles citizens protesting and pushing back on Ice raids.

“BET remains committed to the safety of our guests and staff. We are working closely with LAPD and monitoring the situation,” a BET spokesperson said in a statement. “The 2025 BET Awards will take place Monday, June 9th 2025 at 8pm Et/Pt as scheduled.”

Kevin Hart is set to host the 2025 BET Awards from the Peacock Theater in Downtown Los Angeles (Dtla), close to where protestors fought against the raids.

After S.W.A.T. ended its eight-season run last month, star Jay Harrington was almost just as surprised about the spin-off as fans.

The actor who played Sgt. David ‘Deacon’ Kay said he didn’t hear about the off-shoot S.W.A.T. Exiles, “not once,” while filming the final season of the CBS parent series, but was given a head’s up via text from returning star Shemar Moore a day before the news went live.

“It was the day before. Shemar reached out to to all of us to say, ‘This is what’s going on…,’ and, you know, there’s talk that they’ll reach out to us about stuff,” explained Harrington to TVLine. “He wanted to be the one to tell us, and say ‘your reps will find out shortly.’ That’s when I told my reps, and they had no idea.”

David Lim, who since Day 1 played S.W.A.T.‘s Office Victor Tan, has shared his candid thoughts on how the S.W.A.T. Exiles spinoff announcement was handled earlier this month.

In Exiles, which will begin filming 10 episodes this summer in Los Angeles, “After a high-profile mission goes sideways, Daniel ‘Hondo’ Harrelson is pulled out of forced retirement to lead a last-chance experimental Swat unit made up of untested, unpredictable young recruits,” reads the official logline. “Hondo must bridge a generational divide, navigate clashing personalities, and turn a squad of outsiders into a team capable of protecting the city and saving the program...

“S.W.A.T.” star David Lim is voicing his disappointment that a spinoff is moving forward without involving him or most of his castmates.

It’s been a rocky road over the past few years for the law enforcement drama. CBS canceled “S.W.A.T.” after six seasons in 2023, but following an uproar from fans, reversed the decision and renewed the series for a seventh season. After Season 7 began airing, the network decided to extend it one more time before a final cancellation after Season 8. The series finale aired on May 16, and two days later, Sony Pictures Television announced that it would be producing a spinoff titled “S.W.A.T. Exiles.” (Neither CBS nor any other platform has agreed to air it yet.) Series lead Shemar Moore is currently the only cast member attached to “Exiles.”

That isn’t sitting right with Lim, who played officer Victor Tan for all eight seasons of the CBS drama.

This announcement led to significant backlash for lead actor, Shemar Moore, who has played Sergeant Daniel “Hondo” Harrelson Jr. since the show’s inception.

The Spinoff Was Announced

When CBS revealed in March that Season 8 would be the final season for S.W.A.T., fans of the police drama came together to try to save it once again.

The show had faced cancellation in both 2023 and 2024, only to be saved at the last moment. Season 7 was initially meant to be the last, but CBS surprised everyone with a renewal.

Two key stars of S.W.A.T. were written out at the end of Season 7. Kenny Johnson (Dominique Luca), and Alex Russell (Jim Street), were both moved to recurring roles in Season 7 and eventually exited the show.

S.W.A.T. fans have been on an emotional rollercoaster over the past two years, mourning the series’ cancellation and rejoicing in its subsequent resurrection — three times each.

Like the action drama’s first two comebacks at CBS — its surprising cancellation reversal in 2023 and equally surprising 2024 Season 8 renewal after Season 7 had been billed as final — the most recent one was a cause for celebration, at least at the beginning.

And like the previous two saves, that last one also came as a surprise, two and a half months after S.W.A.T.’s latest (and permanent) cancellation by CBS and only 3 days after its series finale aired on the broadcast network. On Sunday night, S.W.A.T. studio Sony Pictures Television announced that it was extending the franchise with a spinoff series, S.W.A.T. Exiles, headlined by original series’ star Shemar Moore reprising his character as Daniel “Hondo” Harrelson.

CBS’s action drama series S.W.A.T. has been kicking doors down since 2017. The show was the reboot of the 1975 TV series. It followed Shemar Moore’s Sergeant Daniel ‘Hondo’ Harrelson and his team of LAPD officers and gave us eight seasons full of action and social commentary. But even though the show was a success, it had its own challenges.

S.W.A.T. has been cancelled many times before, and it was the fans’ love that kept bringing it back again and again. But now, the series marked its end with Season 8. However, that doesn’t mean that fans won’t see Hondo back in action. A new spinoff series has already been announced, which will keep the legacy of the original alive. But before that, let’s explore what happened with the original series and what the spinoff brings to the table.

S.W.A.T. fans have something to look forward to after the cancellation, Sergeant Hondo is soldiering on in a "bigger, bolder" spinoff. Shemar Moore has a message for longtime co-stars who won't be part of the new crew.

Shemar Moore rallied fans to support the S.W.A.T. spinoff in an Instagram video. "The game has changed. But S.W.A.T. Exiles, baby! Bigger, bolder. S.W.A.T. on steroids," he teased. Exiles was confirmed shortly after the S.W.A.T. finale, but it's yet to be confirmed if any of the co-stars will return in the new show. Moore hinted at a creative overhaul, however: "Nobody likes change," he said. "I understand that. I get it 100%. But without change, you can't grow. You can't win without taking your lumps…. It ain't easy making it in the game of Hollywood. It ain't. TV shows don't last eight years anymore."

In a lengthy Instagram video, in which Moore acknowledges that he “might catch some flack from the industry with what I’m about to say,” TV’s Hondo refers to himself as “the Tom Brady of S.W.A.T.,” and says it’s up to the “team” on the recently announced Exiles spinoff to “keep on pushing with their quarterback.”

Despite the procedural pulling in strong numbers across its eight-season run to date, the show has now officially been cancelled a remarkable three times, with the most recent seeming to be a permanent decision. After it had already been cancelled twice, March brought about the sad news that CBS would leave S.W.A.T. by the wayside following the upcoming May finale of its eighth season. Since then, fans have been doing their best to enjoy what is left, with the most recent, explosive 19th episode of the season sadly giving way to the fact that just three outings for Shemar Moore and the rest of the Twenty Squad remain.

The upcoming twentieth episode, directed by former star Alex Russell and penned by Sarah Alderson, looks to be one of the most tense-fueled episodes of the season yet, certainly if the below promo is anything to go by.

It was a sad day for S.W.A.T. fans earlier this month when CBS announced that, after nine seasons, the network would be canceling the hour-long drama starring Shemar Moore, Jay Harrington, David Lim, Patrick St. Esprit, Anna Enger Ritch, and Annie Ilonzeh. The network has tried this before, initially canceling S.W.A.T. in May 2023 after six seasons, only to renew it for a seventh, and supposedly final, season just 72 hours later. Before the seventh season could finish airing in April 2024, CBS opted to renew the show for another 22-episode season instead of taking the show off the air as planned. Unfortunately for S.W.A.T. fans, the eighth season didn't bring in enough of an audience for CBS to let the show continue into its ninth season.

While lovers of S.W.A.T. and its cast have plenty to be disappointed about, Shemar Moore fans specifically might be finding a silver lining. The day before...

The Swat saga has been difficult. We have had the emotional highs of seeing the show get brought back from the dead twice, and experienced the emotional lows of seeing it get canceled three times. The math obviously doesn't come out in the show's favor.

We always knew that the show was treading on thin ice as it approached the finale of its eighth season, but we didn't expect CBS to pull the plug this early. The rest of season eight is going to be tough on the cast, crew and fans for obvious reasons, but the silver lining is that we get to appreciate the episodes that we have left.

CBS’s Swat just got canceled again, but the series’ star hasn’t given up hope. Shemar Moore posted on Instagram asking Netflix to consider picking up the drama for a ninth season. Moore also pitched it to NBC, ABC, and Fox, suggesting the cast and crew still have a lot of love for the show, as does the series’ passionate fan base.

CBS previously canceled the police drama after season six, before reversing the decision and giving it a seventh season. It earned an eighth season, which premiered in October 2024.

The eighth, and now final, season continues with episode 15 (of 22) airing on Friday, March 14, 2025 at 10pm Et/Pt. Maja Vrvilo directed from a script by Matthew T. Brown.

On the heels of S.W.A.T.‘s cancellation by CBS — presumably final after a back-and-forth that began in May 2023 — the cast of the Shemar Moore vehicle voiced that the series finale will leave viewers “wanting so much more.”

Speaking to TVLine, actress Anna Enger Ritch, who plays officer Zoe Powell, said of the closing installment: “It will make you not want this show to end. You’ll want to keep watching what happens. There are so many avenues and directions to go, so many stories to tell, so many personal things… It will leave you wanting so much more.”

Meanwhile, her co-star Annie Ilonzeh — a new addition this season as a recurring cast member — added, “You go, ‘Oh my gosh, that just happened!’ And, ‘Wait, I need more!’ We definitely don’t button anything up. We leave you guessing and very curious for more.”

Whereas S.W.A.T.‘s May 2024 “series finale” — which was written and filmed before the show got un-cancelled for a second time — tied things up in a neat enough bow, it sounds like the CBS procedural’s next swan song will really leave fans clamoring for more.

S.W.A.T. has run out of lives. CBS has canceled the police drama starring Shemar Moore, now in its eighth season that will wrap in May.

If you are having a case of déjà vu, that is because, following a string of early renewals, S.W.A.T. was dramatically canceled in May 2023 after six seasons, only for CBS to reverse the decision days later with a pickup of what was announced at the time as a seventh and final season. Flash-forward to May 2024 when S.W.A.T. surprisingly was renewed for an eighth season.

Don’t expect another miraculous reprieve; this time the decision is believed to be final — and permanent.

During the past two years, S.W.A.T. lead studio Sony Pictures Television was able to propose financial terms that were appealing to CBS, sealing eleventh-hour pickups. This time, I hear, CBS did not engage in renewal talks, opting instead to end the long-running series outright.

The Case of the Week is set in motion by Jimmy’s daughter Victoria (played by Brian Dietzen’s real-life kid, Elle Graper) revealing to Special Agent Nick —and not her dad, who is “just an M.E.” — that she had found a cache of cash when out one night, though she lied about where, at first, because she had quietly bailed on participating in the school science fair this year, much to her father’s dismay.

Few shows have stood the test of time as well as S.W.A.T., and although the gripping police procedural has only been on the air for eight years, it has already produced eight seasons.
