For many Westerners, Dragon Ball was the very first introduction to all the wonder that anime had to offer. It's a franchise that remains incredibly popular and dear to people's hearts, and the impact it's had on pop culture is undeniable. Because of this, in the mid-2000s, it was only a matter of time before Hollywood came knocking at the door to produce a live-action film. The first and so far only attempt to bring the Dragon Ball franchise to the realm of live-action, Dragonball Evolution, has not only garnered a reputation as one of the worst anime adaptations ever made but as one of the worst films ever made in general.

Back in June, Kcon LA — the world’s largest annual Korean pop culture festival — announced that the first-generation K-pop group g.o.d would be performing at its event in July. When Kcon USA’s official Instagram account posted the group’s name without any periods, some commenters cracked religious jokes. “Is he bringing the 12 disciples?” read one comment. “The rapture is at Kcon” read another.
But for fans who’ve been listening to K-pop for many years and had long heard about these living icons, it really did feel like the rapture was here.

Akira Toriyama's displeasure with Dragonball Evolution prompted him to take a more active role in future Dragon Ball projects. In particular, the failure of the 2009 film led to Toriyama's involvement in Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods and Dragon Ball Super. Despite the live-action adaptation's failure, it did help renew Toriyama's interest in the franchise, leading to successful and beloved projects.
Akira Toriyamas reaction to Dragonball Evolution secretly saved the Dragon Ball franchise by proving to the manga creator that he needed to be more directly involved with projects based on his beloved characters. Originally written and drawn by Toriyama, Dragon Ball was serialized in Weekly Shnen Jump from 1984 to 1995 before being collected into manga volumes. By combining the classic Chinese novel Journey to the West with the marital arts stylings of Hong Kong cinema, Dragon Ball became incredibly popular in Japan and, eventually, around the world. In 2009, Dragonball Evolution happened, which was so disappointing that it made the fans question its existence. The film deviated heavily from Akira Toriyama’s Dragon Ball, failing to feature the essence of the anime and manga series that fans love and are so passionate about.

From whitewashing the characters to showcasing poor VFX, the live-action adaptation was an abomination in the name of a film. The film featured Justin Chatwin in the role of Son-Goku, who was differently portrayed than he was shown in Toriyama-Sensei’s iconic franchise.
Hence, fans wanted to forget the ghastly addition that looked like an ugly splotch in the Dragon Ball franchise. However, it looks like the fans are ready to give the actor another chance, as they would like him to return to the franchise, but in a different role, which might just...

Released in 2009, Dragonball Evolution quickly came under fire because it achieved a new milestone in being the most disappointing watch that has ever been created in the history of cinema. The flick soon became a hot topic of conversation among fans and critics, primarily because it was heavily different from the source material.

The film was a quagmire of mess and complications, from whitewashing the characters to deviating from the source material and subduing the magical essence that Akira Toriyama had spent his life creating. It could not get any worse, or could it?
James Marsters, who played Demon King Piccolo, claimed he was duped into agreeing and that the adaptation would be allegedly made by a well-known director with a large production budget.

Akira Toriyama’s Dragon Ball series is one of the most renowned and commercially successful franchises that has ever been created. Over the years, the franchise has had numerous additions, including films, video games, merchandise, action figures, and a live-action film. While Toriyama-Sensei’s Shonen series excelled in every way possible, Dragonball Evolution faltered in every possible aspect.

Dragonball Evolution Directed by: James Wong Written by: Ben Ramsey Starring: Justin Chatwin, Chow Yun-Fat, Emmy Rossum, Jamie Chung, James Marsters, Randall Duk Kim, Joon Park, Ernie Hudson Asian culture has had a massive influence on North America over the past decade and a half, to the point where nearly every popular children's animated series is now either being imported from Japan or created in the same art style, virtually every horror movie is required to have creepy children in it, and the majority of action movies made since The Matrix has tried to emulate the same slick martial arts choreography. Now the latest trend in Hollywood has producers trying to repackage some of the biggest Japanese animated series as live action films, and it seems only appropriate that Dragonball is one of the first to find its way to the big screen. Based on the manga by Akira Toriyama,...

The players: Director: James Wong, Writer: Ben Ramsey, Cast: Justin Chatwin, Joon Park, James Marsters, Emmy Rossum
Facts of interest: Wong also directed "The One" and "Final Destination."
The plot: Goku must find the seven magical dragonballs before the ruthless villain Piccolo calls forth a badass demon who will destroy the world.
Our quick thoughts: James Wong’s “Dragonball Evolution” is certainly not the worst film I’ve seen so far this year, but it’s still a bad one. A very bad one, actually. I don’t really know much about the “Dragonball” franchise and I’ve never read the series or played any of the video games, but I like to think it doesn’t take an expert to realize this movie is pretty much a crappy big-screen adaptation.

Before Fox acquired the film rights and plotted its inevitable Americanization, Dragon Ball was a wildly popular collection of “manga” volumes (Japanese comics). The books sold 150 million copies worldwide, spawning three different anime television series and seventeen animated feature films. Which is why it’s a shame that the live-action Hollywood production, Dragonball: Evolution, ignores the elements that made the property a hit by skipping past any potential character development, humor, or special effects.
At 83 minutes, the frenetic plot hardly skims the surface of the series’ history and relies on ill-conceived mythology to drive a ridiculous story to an even lamer ending. This might be a shiny ball of fun for the very young, but for everyone else it’s a dull, rotten lemon.
With a family-friendly PG rating, this campy, lazy adventure is only suited for children under 13. Those unfamiliar with the source material will be scratching their heads...

Short version: Dragonball: Evolution is a badly written film with horrible dialogue, lackluster action and a sense of fun that’s nowhere to be found.
Screen Rant’s Ross Miller reviews Dragonball: Evolution
When you head to the theater to see a movie called Dragonball: Evolution, you obviously aren’t expecting Shakespeare. From the advertising, the whole thing gives off a feeling of light, campy, action-packed fun that you would hope would allow you to just sit back, relax and turn off your brain for 90 minutes or so.
Yeah, well, that’s why we have words like “hope” as a counterpoint to “guarantee.”
Dragonball: Evolution may very well be one of the worst films of the past 12 months or so - I am actually struggling to think of the last movie I thought was quite as bad as this one was. And it’s not one of those cases where...

Several new clips from "Dragonball Evolution" have been uncovered. Taking a deeper look into the manga adaptation, most of the clips provide additional never-before-seen footage and bring in some spoilers to the film. Some of the clips also serve as the extended version of the snippets shown in previously-released videos.

Yesterday I posted two weak clips from James Wong's upcoming "Dragonball Evolution," and today I stumbled across five more.
And wow, do they look terrible. Whether it's the bad acting or lame special effects, these clips just stink. You can hate me as much as you want, but I'm convinced this movie will just crash and burn.
The film tells the story of an alien sent to destroy Earth, who has a change of heart and decides to join the humans in their fight against various aliens and bad guys.
"Dragonball Evolution" is adapted from the manga created by Akira Toriyama; the work was also turned into a Japanese anime series that played all over the world.
The film stars Justin Chatwin, Joon Park, Jamie Chung, Emmy Rossum and Yun-Fat Chow, among others. Scheduled release date is April 8, 2009.

Three new “Dragonball: Evolution” images for you kids to chew on, because frankly, you can never have too many glowing balls. While "Dragonball Evolution" won't be opened in theaters until April 8, sequel talk has come up to the surface. In an interview with SciFiNow last month, leading man Justin Chatwin spilled the bean on the potential follow-up of this manga adaptation, hinting further that the script has even been written down.
"If there were to be a sequel I think it...well, I know that it would go to a really interesting place, because they already have the second script written," claimed the 26-year-old. Revealing further on the direction of the sequel, which is tentatively reported to be titled "Dragonball Reborn", he stated, "The second one goes more into the whole legacy and the genealogy of Dragonball. It goes more in-depth into a real Dragonball series, the kind of intergalactic world of Dragonball."
