Taron Egerton Reveals Disappointing Sequel News for Netflix’s Second Most-Watched Movie
Image
Taron Egerton recently opened up about the possibility of a sequel to his hit 2024 thriller Carry-On, and it sounds like fans might not want to get their hopes up.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Egerton explained that making Carry-On 2 would be tricky without losing the magic of the original. “Carry-On 2 is really hard. It’s a celebration of Christmas and a celebration of people who work at Christmas. It then needs to have this huge plot that needs to be foiled and maybe the earwig component. All of that is quite hard to achieve in a sequel without it feeling contrived and to the point of defying credulity. So I have not heard anything, but who knows, stranger things have happened,” he said.

The actor, who played Tsa agent Ethan Kopek, seems skeptical but didn’t completely shut the door on the idea. Carry-On, released on Netflix on...

He explained that the original movie was a celebration of Christmas and the people who work during the holidays, which makes creating a sequel tricky. Egerton said, “Carry-On 2 is really hard. It’s a celebration of Christmas and a celebration of people who work at Christmas. It then needs to have this huge plot that needs to be foiled and maybe the earwig component.

Image
Amazon MGM Studios’ United Artists and Scott Stuber are developing “The Seventh Man,” a new action-thriller that’s written by T.J. Fixman.

Stuber and Fixman previously collaborated on “Carry On,” a hostage thriller with Taron Egerton and Jason Bateman that Jaume Collet-Serra directed. The film was a hit for Netflix and currently sits in second place on the streamer’s list of most popular movies.

Stuber was in charge of Netflix’s film unit before leaving the company in 2024. He then announced he had signed a multi-year film partnership with Amazon MGM Studios under which the company agreed to finance and release movies from Stuber’s new production company under the United Artists (UA) label. The hope was to revitalize the brand, which once produced classics like “Rocky” and “Network” before it faded.

UA’s Stuber and Nick Nesbitt will produce “The Seventh Man” with Fixman serving as executive producer.

2020 Airplane Thriller With 80% Rt Becomes Global Netflix Hit
Image
An airplane thriller with 80% on Rotten Tomatoes becomes a global hit on Netflix more than four years after its debut. Though it arrived very late in the year, the airplane thriller premise received a boost with Carry-On. Directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, with T. J. Fixman writing the script. The story centers on a Tsa officer who's blackmailed into allowing a nerve agent on board a flight during Christmas Eve. The cast of Carry-On is led by Taron Egerton, Sofia Carson, Danielle Deadwyler, and Jason Bateman.

By the start of 2025, Carry-On demolished records to become the fifth-most-watched English-language Netflix Original of all time. That data will soon be backed up by Nielsen's streaming charts. But the initial response underlines the holiday-themed thriller struck a nerve with audiences. Another plane-centric suspense saga is catching on with subscribers, albeit four years after it originally premiered on a rival platform.

Jason Bateman's 10 Best Movies And TV Shows
Image
Jason Bateman has been in the acting business since he was a child, and though he had a lot of projects as a child and teen performer, Bateman’s best movies and tv shows are all from his career as an adult. His career began with television commercials in the 1980s before he gained roles in shows like Little House on the Prairie and Silver Spoons. Though a lot of working child actors might not be able to successfully transition to more adult roles, Bateman did, and he found his niche mostly in comedic roles.

Bateman also made history when he directed episodes of The Hogan Family in the 1980s at just 18 years old. At the time, he was the youngest member of the Directors Guild of America. Bateman directed three episodes of the show, and as an actor today, he often pulls double-duty as a director too. He has...

'Carry-On' Gets Sequel Update After Breaking Huge Netflix Record
Image
Following its record viewership, the latest Netflix action movie, Carry-On, gets a sequel update from director Jaume Collet-Serra. Though it may not be what fans want to hear. Speaking with Variety amid the news that Carry-On is now the fifth most popular English-language Netflix movie after scoring a total of 149.5 million views since debuting last month, Collet-Serra has revealed that, for now, at least, there are no formal talks regarding a Carry-On 2.

However, while nothing is officially on the board right now, the filmmaker does have some ideas regarding what a follow-up would include. Stating that he would return if that’s what audiences want, the director revealed that a potential Carry-On 2 could leave Taron Egerton’s Tsa agent Ethan Kopek behind and instead follow Danielle Deadwyler’s LAPD detective Elena Cole.

“We don’t have any plans for a sequel. But if audiences wanted a sequel, families wanted a...

'Carry-On' Lands in Netflix's Top 5 Streaming Films, Dethroning a Fan-Favorite Movie
Image
Ever since its debut before the holiday season, Carry-On has been a big hit for Netflix, securing solid reviews and audience feedback that has turned into a considerable amount of views for the platform. As the film has steadily climbed in viewership, Carry-On has begun to become one of Netflix's top-performing films and has just recently knocked a fan-favorite sequel directed by Rian Johnson out of their Top 5.

Per Variety, Carry-On has entered Netflix's most popular English-language films list at number five, with a total of 149.5 million views since it debuted on the streamer last month. By cracking the Top 5, Carry-On knocks Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery out of the fifth spot, and joins the ranks of Red Notice (currently holding the top spot), Don't Look Up, The Adam Project, and Bird Box. All of these films have put in stellar numbers that Carry-On could very well encroach on.

Carry-On is being called the new Die Hard, but the Netflix film is more similar to a movie from the 1970s, which it references during its ending. The 2024 action thriller, directed by Jaume Collet-Serra and written by T.J. Fixman, follows Taron Egerton's Ethan Kopek, a Tsa officer who gets blackmailed at Lax on Christmas Eve. Netflix’s latest holiday action-thriller, Carry-On, was released on the platform on December 13. Featuring Jason Bateman in an unexpected role as a villain and Taron Egerton as the determined Tsa agent trying to thwart his plans, the film pays homage to the iconic Die Hard while carving out its own unique narrative.

At its heart is Bateman’s chilling portrayal of “The Traveler,” a calm, calculated antagonist who effectively redefines what it means to be menacing. Job Security: On “Carry-On”

Carry-On.For the past few years, Jaume Collet-Serra has been getting the proverbial bag; with Carry-On, he peers inside it. The film is a thriller set during the holiday crunch at Lax: it centers on Ethan Kopek (Taron Egerton), a prematurely harried Tsa officer (and recent police academy washout) who clocks in for his Christmas Eve shift at the crack of dawn with something to prove. Specifically, Ethan is hoping to show his skeptical bosses—as well as his newly pregnant girlfriend, Nora (Sofia Carson), herself an airport employee—that he’s finally ready to take his shit-eating gig manning the baggage scanner seriously. “I’ve been coasting,” he admits at a staff meeting. “But I can do better.” No sooner has Ethan taken his post than he’s recruited, against his will and under the noses of his coworkers, to steward a mysterious package through security and onto an outbound flight,...

‘Carry-On’ Review (Netflix)
Image
Stars: Taron Egerton, Jason Bateman, Danielle Deadwyler, Dean Norris, Sofia Carson | Written by T.J. Fixman | Directed by Jaume Collet-Serra

Despite the title, Carry-On has nothing to do with the popular series of saucy British comedies. Instead, it’s a pacy and enjoyable straight-to-Netflix airport thriller, directed by Jaume Collet-Serra. Maybe you could call it Carry On Die Hard 2, if you were feeling jovial, but it takes itself too seriously (in a good way) to really merit that joke.

Set on Christmas Eve, Carry-On stars Taron Egerton as Ethan Kopek, a Homeland Security employee who’s just found out his longtime girlfriend-slash-senior colleague Nora is pregnant with their first child. Spurred into wanting to step up, he asks his boss (Dean Norris) for a promotion, which is how he finds himself operating an airport X-ray machine when a master criminal known as The Traveler (Jason Bateman) puts his evil plan into action.

Carry-On's Divided Rotten Tomatoes Scores Explained: Why It's Fresh With Critics But Rotten With Audiences

Netflix's Carry-On has been shockingly divisive in the days following its premiere, as most critics seemingly enjoyed the movie, while audiences have (ironically) been more critical of it. Kingsman Star's New Action Movie With 85% Rt Score Tops Netflix's Global Charts With Streaming Record

Kingsman star Taron Egerton has a new action streaming hit. The spy franchise began with Matthew Vaughn's Kingsman: The Secret Service, which came out in 2014. Egerton was just 25 years old at the time of its release, and was granted the opportunity to work with Hollywood greats such as Samuel L. Jackson, Michael Caine, Mark Strong, and Colin Firth. Kingsman was granted a sequel film, The Golden Circle, three years later and further helped establish Egerton as a leading man.

While the Kingsman franchise also gained a prequel film sans-Egerton, the actor is expected to reprise his role as Eggsy in the in-development Kingsman: The Blue Blood, should it actually come to fruition. For this, Egerton turned directly to Ethan and what he would hope to see and play. “I think the thing about Carry On is…he’s a guy who is not really sure of who he is and he’s thrust into these sort of extraordinary circumstances and he rises to the occasion. But he’s a bit lost, I think, in this movie and you kind of see him just struggling to keep up for most of the film.

Caught between doing the right thing and saving Nora’s life, Ethan does his best to alert the authorities without tipping off the traveler.

However, time and again, the traveler is seemingly one step ahead of Ethan. Having tapped into the airport’s security cameras, the traveler and his associate, the watcher (Theo Rossi), see everything. Carry-On Review: Taron Egerton's Netflix Thriller Is a Christmas Movie
Image
The following contains major spoilers for Carry-On, now streaming on Netflix.

The Netflix movie Carry-On jumps into the "Is Die Hard a Christmas movie?" debate with both feet. Like that film, it's an action piece that just so happens to be set during Christmas Eve. It's as if director Jaume Collet-Serra is doing a Die Hard homage, and while Carry-On never reaches those heights, it definitely takes its best shot.

Carry-On revolves around Transportation Security Administration (Tsa) agent Ethan Kopek, a loveable loser who's coasting through his job, much to the disappointment of his successful girlfriend Nora Parisi. But when nameless bad guys want to get a lethal package through Los Angeles International Airport, Ethan transforms into an action hero -- something that actor Taron Egerton proves to be very good at. No one will be that surprised by what unfolds, yet the movie is every bit the fun diversion it wants to be.

Carry-On

You can’t swing a Christmas tree at the moment without crashing into one of the many dubious seasonal offerings festooned across the Netflix front page like so much cheap tinsel. Between sexy snowmen (Hot Frosty), Christmas strippers (The Merry Gentlemen), a ticket tout romance (Meet Me Next Christmas) and the latest evolution of the Lohanaissance (Our Little Secret), there’s enough shoddy yuletide fare to make even the holly jolliest of Christmas lovers want to garrotte an elf with some fairy lights.

However, amidst all the saccharine schmaltz and candy cane cliche, the streamer has also slipped a surprise treat into our stockings in the form of this unexpectedly watchable airport thriller. Directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, who pioneered an entire sub-genre in which Liam Neeson murders people on assorted modes of public transport, Carry-On sets out its stall on a busy Christmas Eve at Lax. Bored Tsa agent Ethan...

‘Just Go On This Adventure’: Theo Rossi on Netflix's Wild Movie Carry-On
Image
The Netflix film Carry-On is a thriller that will leave audiences unsettled just before the start of the holiday season. When Tsa agent Ethan Kopek gets entangled with dangerous individuals, he'll stop at nothing to keep them from causing a disaster in the air. And what sounds like a straightforward action piece is enhanced by the actors who bring their characters to life.

One such star is Theo Rossi, the Sons of Anarchy veteran who steps into the role known only as Watcher. Rossi's character is part of the villainous crew and as the moniker suggests, he's responsible for observing everything that goes on. It sounds like a vague and possibly even boring part to play, but Cbr spoke with Rossi about how he created the character and what it's like for him to play so many darker characters, from The Penguin's Dr. Julian Rush to now this killer without a name.

‘Carry-On’ Review: It’s Taron Egerton vs. Jason Bateman in a Suspenseful Netflix Thriller
Image
The first thing in my mind upon streaming Netflix’s Carry-On is its airport premise takes place on a Christmas holiday, which instantly reminds me of Die Hard 2. While the latter is more of a high-stakes action thriller filled with bigger action, explosions and stunts, genre specialist Jaume Collet-Serra isn’t here to replicate the go-big-or-go-home thrills of Renny Harlin’s 1990 blockbuster. Instead, he prefers a low-key approach, relying more on building up the tension and suspense than going all-out.

The story goes like this: A young and lowly Tsa officer Ethan Kopek (Taron Egerton) working at Lax. He recently learns his girlfriend Nora (a stunning Sofia Carson), who also works in the same airport but as a manager for the airport operations, is pregnant. The news somehow leaves him with a mixed feeling and not to mention his seemingly dead-end job at Lax remains stagnant for so long.

If You Love Die Hard, Check Out Taron Egerton's New Christmas Action Movie Now Streaming On Netflix
Image
One of the biggest cinematic disputes is over whether Die Hard is a Christmas movie or not; well, be prepared to add another film to that argument, as Netflix released a similar one in December 2024. John McTiernan's 1988 action movie follows Bruce Willis' John McClane, a detective who gets trapped inside a skyscraper on Christmas Eve when terrorists take over. Since its release, many have insisted that Die Hard is a Christmas film based on its setting and timeline. Meanwhile, others have rebutted that sentiment.

Die Hard's success in the late 1980s led to a franchise revolving around Bruce Willis' John McClane. In addition to the first movie, the series includes Die Hard 2 (1990), Die Hard with a Vengeance (1995), Live Free or Die Hard (2007), and A Good Day to Die Hard (2013).

While many prefer traditional Christmas films (e.g. It's a Wonderful Life) or cheesy rom-coms (e.g. Hot...

Netflix Ends 2024 On High Note As Kingsman Star's Action Thriller Continues 5-Year Rotten Tomatoes Streak
Image
The Taron Egerton thriller Carry-On has become a success on Rotten Tomatoes. The new movie, which follows a Tsa agent who is threatened via an earpiece by a mysterious terrorist (Jason Bateman) who wants him to let a dangerous package through security, was directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, who helmed the Liam Neeson action-thrillers Unknown, Non-Stop, Run All Night, and The Commuter. The Carry-On cast also includes Logan Marshall-Green, Sofia Carson, Danielle Deadwyler, Theo Rossi, Dean Norris, and Sinqua Walls.

Rotten Tomatoes has now calculated an official score for Carry-On. While the score could fluctuate as more reviews are added, now that 22 different critics have weighed in, the movie has debuted on the review aggregator platform with a solidly Fresh score of 86%. This continues a positive five-year streak for the star, who has not had a Rotten score on the platform since 2018's Robin Hood, which was one of just three...

Carry-On Review: Jaume Collet-Serra Delivers A New Christmas Crime Classic
Image
Bruce Springsteen’s “Santa Claus Is Comin’ to Town” plays out as we pan down from the sky to find a mysterious man we’ll know only as Traveler (Jason Bateman) arriving to make a deal for an ominous suitcase, murdering everyone on sight before he acquires it. Within moments, Jaume Collet-Serra establishes the new Netflix action thriller Carry-On as festive fanfare that doesn’t fuck around. Having spent the last half-decade navigating the studio blockbuster minefield with Jungle Cruise and Black Adam, Collet-Serra’s latest sees the director return to what he does best: a mid-budget programmer with genuine, everyday characters in drastic situations and a little more on its mind than you’d expect.

Traveler, played by Bateman with ruthless efficiency and sinister smarm, refers to himself as a “freelance facilitator.” His latest job: get that suitcase through airport security and onto a plane for surely nefarious means.

‘Carry-On’ – The Modern ‘Die Hard’ (Review)
Image
When you purchase through our links, we may earn an affiliate commission.

CinemaBlind’s Review: 80%

In my opinion most of Netflix original film are a hit and a miss and I am so happy to say that this Taron Egerton film fits into the category of a hit. Directed by Jaume Collet-Serra from a screenplay by T.J. Fixman, Carry-On is the perfect example of how action-thrillers should be made.

Carry-On follows Ethan Kopek, a young Tsa officer who is blackmailed by a mysterious traveler to let a dangerous package slip through security and onto a Christmas Day flight. While Ethan tries to run the blackmailer’s plan but he soon finds out how dangerous he is after the blackmailer threatens to kill Ethan’s pregnant girlfriend.

Carry-On has a certain charm to it, that you can only find in old action thriller films such as the first few Die Hard films.

‘Carry-On’ Review: Jaume Collet-Serra Returns to Form with a Fantastic Netflix Thriller Starring Taron Egerton as a Tsa Agent on Christmas Eve
Image
For a minute there, it almost felt like we lost Jaume Collet-Serra. The Spanish-American filmmaker spent the better part of a decade establishing himself as a bonafide auteur of better than they have any right to be suspense thrillers about decent people — usually Liam Neeson — trapped in compromising positions, but it was always going to be a matter of time before Hollywood took notice of the ecstatic competency he displayed in mid-budget movies like “Non-Stop” and “Run All Night” and swooped him up into the big leagues. He didn’t belong there. “Jungle Cruise” and “Black Adam” were both the kind of misfires that people only talk about in the past tense; the kind that could’ve been directed by anybody, and ultimately felt like they weren’t.

Altogether, they represented the kind of setback that typically forces a director to slum it on a streamer until they rediscover their mojo.

‘Carry-On’ Review: Taron Egerton and Jason Bateman Face Off in Netflix’s Satisfyingly Tense Airport Thriller
Image
When the manager of the transportation security officers at Lax greets his bleary-eyed employees with a chipper “good morning” at the beginning of Carry-On, Jaume Collet-Serra’s low-key gripping thriller, his voice drips with sarcasm.

It is Christmas Eve at the bustling airport, which means it is decidedly not a good morning. The stakes are high for the hundreds of agents responsible for shepherding anxious and impatient travelers through security checkpoints. The bag scans, the body searches and the changing instructions around shoes and laptops are triggering for a citizenry worn down by the post-9/11 security apparatus. So truthfully, it’s a bad morning — and, at least for Ethan Kopek (an excellent Taron Egerton), it’s about to get worse.

Carry-On, which premieres on Netflix this Friday, Dec. 13, follows the slacker Tsa agent through what might be his most challenging day on the job. It begins on fairly normal grounds,...

‘Carry-On’ Review: Flight, Camera, Action
Image
Jaume Collet-Serra, the master of the mass transit thriller, heads back to the airport for the first time in a decade with Carry-On, which trades Non-Stop’s midair mystery for a tour through the nightmare of Los Angeles International Airport security during the Christmas rush. As Tsa agent Ethan Kopek (Taron Egerton) settles in for a shift scanning bags as an arms smuggler (Jason Bateman) attempts to get a hot package through the line. No sooner does Ethan put in his earpiece than the smuggler’s voice comes through a hacked channel, telling the agent to make sure the package is cleared without issue—or else.

The film is as fiercely economical as Collet-Serra’s best work, namely The Shallows. It wastes little time telling you everything you need to know about Ethan within minutes: Expecting his first child with his partner Nora (Sofia Carson), the man expresses anxiety about...

‘Carry-On’ Review: Taron Egerton And Jason Bateman Play Tense Cat-And-Mouse Game In Netflix’s Time-Bomb-Ticking Holiday Airport Thriller
Image
In an attempt to most obviously appeal to fans of Die Hard (and who isn’t?), director Jaume Collet-Serra has come up with something designed for them, especially for those who like Christmas movies that will freak you out.

Of course Die Hard was a hard-core action thriller set in a office tower in Century City at Christmas, but many are hard-pressed to call it a “Christmas movie” — even though it always turns up near the top of Yuletide favorites. Collet-Serra, in setting a thriller on Christmas Eve during the most crowded time imaginable for travelers, put his film Carry-On at Lax, one of the world’s busiest airports, and that becomes the perfect setting if you want a heart-racing action flick with a holiday chaser.

Of course a film like this is unquestionably derivative with elements of any number in the genre from Speed to Phone Booth, and other...

‘Carry-On’s Rotten Tomatoes Debut Will Have Action & Netflix Fans Feeling Merry
Image
This year has been a great one for Netflix and action, with the likes of Rebel Ridge, The Shadow Strays, and Under Paris lighting up both the Rotten Tomatoes ratings and the viewership numbers. So, as we approach the end of 2024, how does their latest action thriller effort, the Taron Egerton-le, Christmas-set Carry-On, fare with critics? As of now, Carry-On stands at a promising 83% on Rotten Tomatoes, and could very well be exaclty what action movie fans asked for this year.

Nick Schager of The Daily Beast declared Carry-On to be nothing less than “the Best Netflix Thriller in Years,” as well as the perfect gift for action movie fans.

"This breakneck Netflix offering confirms the enduring vitality of its chosen formula—and, in the process, proves an unexpected and welcome Yuletide streaming gift."

Jake Cole of Slant Magazine applauded director Jaume Collet-Serra's action movie throwback, saying,...

‘Carry-On’ Netflix Review: Jaume Collet-Serra Gives Taron Egerton His John McClane Moment
Image
All the excessively saccharine Christmas movies that come out during this time had me yearning for films like Die Hard, Home Alone, and Krampus; you know, stories that take the festive mood and turn it into something universally entertaining whilst spreading the word of the Lord and whatnot. Surprisingly enough, Dear Santa of all movies sort of scratched that itch. For starters, instead of having Santa Claus, it brought in a spawn of Satan because a kid misspelled Santa, which is totally relatable. It had some exceptionally great performances from the cast, and while the overall filmmaking left me unsatisfied, the message about being nice in this cynical world kinda got to me. Now, I had made peace with the fact that that’s the best Christmas movie that I was going to get this year. However, right when my sense of hope was about to flicker and die, Jaume Collet-Serra delivered Carry-On,...

Carry On Review — Egerton and Bateman Waste Your Time in this Inept Thriller
Image
Is this the first time a marketing idea came before a movie script? I couldn’t help but wonder after watching Netflix’s inept and time-wasting thriller Carry On. It feels as if the studio said to themselves, “Let’s make a movie that answers the question, Is Die Hard a Christmas movie?”

With the advent of Hollywood AI, I’d bet my salary against the president of Netflix’s salary that this was the case. Carry On is a blatant rip-off of better films, particularly Die Hard 2: Die Harder. Worse, the script thinks it’s smarter than it is, dragging down a fun performance by Jason Bateman.

‘Carry-On’ Review: Tsa Poster Boy Taron Egerton and an Evil Jason Bateman Ground Netflix’s Out-There Christmas Thriller
Image
The sort of relatably flawed everyday hero who might have been played by Mel Gibson or Bruce Willis back in the ’80s, Ethan Kopek always wanted to be a cop. Instead, he’s working airport security — and not even the essential job of scanning passengers’ baggage for bombs. For the past three years, this dead-end Tsa agent’s been stuck somewhere deep in the bowels of Lax airport, doing who knows what, dreaming of a promotion that will never come.

Dumb-fun Netflix potboiler “Carry-On” takes place on Christmas Eve, one of the busiest travel times of the year, and Ethan (Taron Egerton) has picked this moment to prove himself, begging his boss (a surly Dean Norris) to “put me on a machine.” Feeling generous, his supervisor agrees, but this is hardly Ethan’s lucky day. Within minutes of sitting down at the Ct scanner, Ethan finds himself at the center...

‘Carry-On’ Review – Jaume Collet-Serra’s Holiday Thriller Gets the Adrenaline Pumping
Image
As the endless debate over whether Die Hard classifies as a Christmas movie wages on, ever so tiresomely, director Jaume Collet-Serra declares his stance with Carry-On, a new Netflix holiday thriller that bears a lot in common with the sequel Die Hard 2. Taron Egerton channels John McClane as a Tsa Agent forced to go rogue when unexpectedly pulled into a terrorist plot at a crowded airport on Christmas Eve. While much simpler and more intimate in scale than Die Hard 2, Collet-Serra’s talents for taut suspense, tight plotting, and propulsive pacing ensure Carry-On delivers on big holiday thrills and energetic fun.

Egerton’s Ethan Kopek is a bit more law-abiding than his ’80s action-hero counterpart. Ethan is in good spirits when rushing to clock into his Christmas Eve shift at Lax, even as his newly pregnant girlfriend, Nora (Sofia Carson), points out his wasted potential in not pursuing...

Carry-On Review: Taron Egerton's Uneven Netflix Thriller Gets More Fun As It Dumbs Down
Image
For at least the first half of Carry-On, I often noticed my thoughts wandering away from the action onscreen. This is something I pay attention to more closely when watching to review – it's always notable when a movie doesn't hold your focus, even if it's not always to blame. But I was more aware of it than usual this time because I wasn't thinking about my day, or my next meal, or what I had to do tomorrow. My wandering thoughts never really left the movie. I was not thinking about Carry-On the story, but Carry-On the story vehicle.
