In re-creating the most famous of icons, one might think the approach would be to mimic the original. If only resurrecting Marilyn Monroe for director Andrew Dominik’s Blonde had been that simple. “Andrew said to me, ‘Don’t just put Marilyn’s makeup on Ana [de Armas]. You have to find Marilyn within Ana,’ ” says makeup department head Tina Roesler Kerwin.

With only a few weeks to prepare for the Netflix film, Kerwin and hair department head Jaime Leigh McIntosh’s first day of production was a photo shoot creating the still images that would show Marilyn’s rise to fame throughout the film. It was while putting together the more than three dozen looks that they were able to practice perfecting the two-and-a-half-hour process of transforming de Armas into Monroe. “A lot of it was erasing before we could rebuild,” says Kerwin. “Her...

Ana de Armas had zero difficulty finding streams of research to play Marilyn Monroe in Blonde. But learning what drove Norma Jean, the delicate and insecure woman behind the public persona, was an entirely different challenge.

“It was important to find the emotional truth in this character,” she said Saturday at Deadline’s The Contenders Film: Los Angeles. “One of the biggest themes in this movie is the private and public self. Norma Jean was completely unseen. I wanted to capture the essence of that woman, to find the human underneath. Despite this, there remains a strong allure for would-be actors and actresses yearning to be embraced by the system, often at a cost to their mental and physical health. In other words, the image is rarely reflective of reality. The contrast is touched upon in Otto Preminger’s 1944 noir Laura, but made all the more poignant when one considers the trajectory of its star, Gene Tierney, an actress whose life, like so many before her, was a constant struggle to live up to the on-screen perfection.

What becomes a legend most? Well, in the case of Marilyn Monroe, it’s countless books, feature films, TV movies, limited series, documentaries and even a Broadway musical. “Blonde,” the latest film about the influential sex symbol, who starred in such films as 1953’s “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes” and 1959’s ‘Some Like it Hot” and tragically died at the age of 36 in 1962, has been polarizing critics and audiences since it premiered at the recent Venice Film Festival.

Based on Joyce Carol Oates’ best-selling 2000 novel, “Blonde” offers a fictionalized look at the troubled actress. Currently in theaters and streaming on Netflix, “Blonde” stars Ana de Armas. NBC's upcoming live broadcast of "The Sound of Music," starring Carrie Underwood as Maria and Stephen Moyer as Capt. von Trapp, has added several key players to its cast: namely, the kids who will play the von Trapp children.

Theater actress Ariane Rinehart, who was most recently seen in the video for Justin Timberlake's "Mirrors," will play 16-going-on-17 Liesl. She can also be seen next year in Darren Aronofsky's biblical epic "Noah."

Her siblings will be played by mostly unknown actors with theater backgrounds: Michael Nigro as Fredrich, Ella Watts-Gorman as Louisa, Joe West, who played Ralphie in Broadway's "A Christmas Story" adaptation, as Kurt, Sophia Caruso, who played young Norma Jean on "Smash," as Brigitta, Grace Rundhaug as Marta, and Peyton Ella as Gretl.

Newcomer Michael Campayno will play Liesl's soldier love, Rolfe, reports Deadline.

The three-hour "The Sound of Music Live!" will air Thursday, Dec. 5 at 8 p.

The Devil Wears Prada will release their new, as yet untitled album on September 17th via Roadrunner Records.

Unearth have signed a North American record deal with eOne Music. They'll release their sixth album later this year.

So with golf overruns we open with the show already in progress because that’s how much respect NBC has for this show and its audience. But it’s some bit of business with that shapeless mess of a non-show Hit List so it doesn’t matter.

As the company dashes off for a costume change Daisy Parker, that dancer who accused Derek of sexual harassment and then vanished for months only to return on Bombshell‘s opening night to serve as Derek’s third-choice dick receptacle, tells Ana how wonderful her performance is and how terrified she would be if she ever had to go on in her place. Gosh, I wonder of that offhand comment has any greater significance?

Jimmy’s watching from the wings, dissatisfied with the show since it transferred to Broadway.

This week on Smash, Jimmy continued lobbying for the “Most Ungrateful Fink on TV” award, Will and Grace Tom and Julia’s friendship hit more turbulence, Derek continued to let “little Derek” do all the thinking in their partnership and Ivy Lynn got smacked with a big reason to reconsider her nude scene in Bombshell. Oh, and a bitchy showdown between Ivy Lynn and Karen? Brrrrring it!

We open closer to Christian Borle's face than we have any right to be.

Tom stands on a darkened stage, calling out for the company. Spotlights blaze on and as the company howls with laughter Tom realizes he's naked. He screams...

...and awakens in his bed. It was just a dream. He breathes a sigh of relief and rolls to his side, and spots Ellis in bed next to him.

Tom screams again and jerks awake. Julia rushes in and he starts to tell her about his horrible opening night dream. She tells him not to worry, that's weeks away. Tonight is “invited dress” where friends and family will be in attendance.

Derek and Ivy wake up next to each other at Ivy's place. Neither of them screams. He apologizes for staying over but she's Ok with it. As they dress they chat about their respective shows.

There are two ways to look at Smash‘s final Tuesday-night outing: You could feel depressed that NBC is pushing its musical dramedy to Saturday nights, where it’ll be whacked with the Grim Reaper’s scythe like a piñata at a child’s birthday party. Or you could raise the adult beverage of your choice and rejoice that this week’s episode featured the indomitable Bobby and another one of his bitchy quips.

“This is boring,” our chorus boy sighed as Bombshell star Ivy Lynn made nice with her Broadway legend mama Leigh Conroy (Bernadette Peters) on their first day of rehearsal.

We open on a post-coital Karen shuffling to the kitchen in a t-shirt to make coffee. It's not the shirt she swiped from Jimmy Charming last episode, and shouldn't it be? Jimmy shuffles out after her wrapped in an afghan that you know Karen's grandmother knitted for her never dreaming it would end up wrapped around some greasy half-naked dude who defiled her granddaughter atop it.

They grossly let us know that they banged repeatedly and for hours and are about to do it again when the buzzer rings. Karen hits the intercom. It's her father (Dylan Baker), flown in from Iowa for a conference on milk machine technology or whatever the hell it is people from Iowa talk about. Karen's panicked but Jimmy thinks letting Dad know he defiled his daughter repeatedly atop her grandmother's quilt is the funniest thing ever. She forces him into his clothes and out the window,...
