Better Lovers Announce Debut Album, Unleash New Song “A White Horse Covered in Blood”: Stream
Image
Better Lovers — the supergroup featuring former members of The Dillinger Escape Plan and Every Time I Die — have announced their debut full-length album, Highly Irresponsible, out October 25th via SharpTone Records. They also dropped the lead single and video “A White Horse Covered in Blood.”

The vitriolic track takes off at a sprint, with spitfire vocals from Greg Puciato and a barrage of guitar riffs that hit a satisfying sweet spot between thrash metal and hardcore. The second half of the song features a huge breakdown after a lengthy and highly effective musical rest — one that’s long enough for Puciato to smash a mic stand through a wall in slow motion in the accompanying music video.

“Playing and hearing our own music makes us want to run through walls,” said guitarist Jordan Buckley of the Eric Richter-produced video. “So we made a video where, while playing and hearing our own music,...

Quinta Brunson at an event for 82nd Golden Globe Awards (2025)

But will next season be the last one for Quinta Brunson's breakout hit, or can we expect to see our favorite Philly teachers for years to come?

In a recent interview with Elle, Brunson provided some insight into her plans for the smash hit sitcom.

Raised in Philadelphia public schools, Brunson also had the benefit of being raised by a kindergarten teacher: her mother, Norma Jean.

Brunson has a mile-long list of credits as a writer, producer, director, and actor, proving that she can wear a plethora of hats in the industry.

But none of...

Everyone in Hollywood Hates Their Birth Name
Image
Think you know your favorite actor or singer? Check their birth certificate. You don’t know Jack … or Tom or Helen or John.

We’ve covered Arnold Schwarzenegger’s ordeal, rejected by agents on account of his surname, at one point altering his name to “Arnold Strong” either to appear less foreign or simply because his name took up too much space. The change was short-lived. It eventually worked out for him, his distinct heritage differentiating him in a sea of body builders. At this point, it’s no secret Marilyn Monroe was born Norma Jean and Cary Grant wasn’t always called Cary. But it’s probably less likely you know who Carlos Irwin Estévez or Belcalis Almanzar are.

Some alter their legal name, and some simply alter their stage name, but whether you officially file the paperwork or not, your name makes a huge difference. It’s usually...

‘Anna Nicole Smith: You Don’t Know Me’ (2023). Netflix Documentary
Image
Anna Nicole Smith: You Don’t Know Me is a documentary directed by Ursula Macfarlane about the life of Anna Nicole Smith and her years in stardom until her tragic death.

Anna Nicole Smith was a Texan girl who became an icon of American culture in the 1980s. In the wake of Marilyn, her story is also that of a woman with overwhelming sexuality criticized by traditional America and exploited by the media. . This documentary takes us back to his origins and tells us about the path she undertook to become a brilliant star with a profoundly popular style that was able to dazzle the masses.

It was precisely her ability to connect with people and her image as a stunning blonde that points her out as an heir to the iconic style that, not only, but no one knew how to promote better than Marilyn.

Blonde True Story: How Much Really Happened & What The Movie Changes
Image
Netflix’s Blonde features a controversial depiction of the life of Marilyn Monroe, but what is the Blonde Netflix movie true story? Blonde is not technically considered a biopic and is instead based on a semi-fictional book of the same name, the movie blurs the lines between Monroe’s real life and fiction frequently during its run time, making it difficult to decipher what is fact and what is fabricated. Blonde takes viewers on a journey through the life of Marilyn Monroe (played by Ana de Armas), beginning with her troubled childhood and ending with her premature death in 1962. The movie mainly focuses on Monroe's personal life, primarily her affairs, pregnancies, and struggle with her public persona as Marilyn Monroe, while it skirts around the deeper details of her marriages and career for the most part.

Rather than examining the details of Marilyn Monroe’s life the way a traditional biopic would,...

The Blonde bombshell on starring in the Marilyn Monroe movie that rocked the world

This was a huge amount of movie to shoot in 47 days.

Truly crazy. Especially with everything that the film covers: movie recreations and her childhood, which is such an important part in the movie, all the wardrobe changes. This was full-on for everyone, but everyone was so passionate about it. It’s one of those movies that you feel like, “I would pay to do this movie.”

Did you draw a clear distinction between Norma Jean and Marilyn?

I think there are scenes that were pushing more for the discomfort, and danger, and the vulnerability [of Norma Jean], and then there were other scenes where clearly Marilyn was needed...

How ‘Blonde’ Star Ana de Armas Became Marilyn Monroe
Image
Click here to read the full article.

In re-creating the most famous of icons, one might think the approach would be to mimic the original. If only resurrecting Marilyn Monroe for director Andrew Dominik’s Blonde had been that simple. “Andrew said to me, ‘Don’t just put Marilyn’s makeup on Ana [de Armas]. You have to find Marilyn within Ana,’ ” says makeup department head Tina Roesler Kerwin.

With only a few weeks to prepare for the Netflix film, Kerwin and hair department head Jaime Leigh McIntosh’s first day of production was a photo shoot creating the still images that would show Marilyn’s rise to fame throughout the film. It was while putting together the more than three dozen looks that they were able to practice perfecting the two-and-a-half-hour process of transforming de Armas into Monroe. “A lot of it was erasing before we could rebuild,” says Kerwin. “Her...

‘Blonde’ Star Ana de Armas Said Her Job Was To Find “The Human Underneath” Marilyn Monroe – Contenders L.A.
Image
Ana de Armas had zero difficulty finding streams of research to play Marilyn Monroe in Blonde. But learning what drove Norma Jean, the delicate and insecure woman behind the public persona, was an entirely different challenge.

“It was important to find the emotional truth in this character,” she said Saturday at Deadline’s The Contenders Film: Los Angeles. “One of the biggest themes in this movie is the private and public self. Norma Jean was completely unseen. I wanted to capture the essence of that woman, to find the human underneath. It was a long process studying her and her films, to understand what she was feeling at all times, always thinking that Norma for the most part never thought she could live up to Marilyn. What people thought of her was not at all what she felt like.”

Gene Tierney's Role in Laura Highlights Hollywood's Struggle for Perfection
Image
The death of illusion would be the death of cinema, a sobering fact not lost on Hollywood, which regularly dabbles in meta concepts and the dark side of fame. From the fictional Sunset Boulevard to the harsh realities that plagued Norma Jean aka Marilyn Monroe, the movie industry has churned out incredible stories and damaged people since day one, using fantasy as currency. Despite this, there remains a strong allure for would-be actors and actresses yearning to be embraced by the system, often at a cost to their mental and physical health. In other words, the image is rarely reflective of reality. The contrast is touched upon in Otto Preminger’s 1944 noir Laura, but made all the more poignant when one considers the trajectory of its star, Gene Tierney, an actress whose life, like so many before her, was a constant struggle to live up to the on-screen perfection.

Before ‘Blonde’: A look back at portrayals of Marilyn Monroe
Image
What becomes a legend most? Well, in the case of Marilyn Monroe, it’s countless books, feature films, TV movies, limited series, documentaries and even a Broadway musical. “Blonde,” the latest film about the influential sex symbol, who starred in such films as 1953’s “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes” and 1959’s ‘Some Like it Hot” and tragically died at the age of 36 in 1962, has been polarizing critics and audiences since it premiered at the recent Venice Film Festival.

Based on Joyce Carol Oates’ best-selling 2000 novel, “Blonde” offers a fictionalized look at the troubled actress. Currently in theaters and streaming on Netflix, “Blonde” stars Ana de Armas. She has been singled out by critics for her work, but director Andrew Dominik (“The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford”) hasn’t been so lucky. “’Blonde’ has been conceived as a slow-motion death march,” said the L.A. Times Justin Chan.

The 2001 ‘Blonde’ Miniseries Understands Marilyn Monroe Better Than Andrew Dominik (Opinion)
Image
It’s ironic that Andrew Dominik, director of the latest Marilyn Monroe biopic “Blonde,” wonders if anyone still watches Marilyn Monroe movies. I’d say the many Monroe biopics that exist, whether directly retelling the events of her life or loosely inspired by them like his own, says otherwise. It’s even more frustrating to look at the landscape of Marilyn portrayals onscreen and realize only two have been directed by women; and just one has been written and directed by a woman. It is that same movie, also based on Joyce Carol Oates’ novel, that seems to have a better awareness of Marilyn and her movies.

CBS aired the two-part miniseries “Blonde,” directed by Joyce Chopra and written by Joyce Eliason, in 2001. The TV movie tells the familiar story of Norma Jean Baker, aka Marilyn Monroe (played by Poppy Montgomery), as she navigates a tortured upbringing with a mentally ill mother,...

Marilyn Monroe: 10 Defining Roles That Showcase Her Legacy Better Than ‘Blonde’ Ever Could
Image
From being born Norma Jean on the east side of Los Angeles to dying as Marilyn Monroe alone in her bedroom at Fifth Helena Drive in Brentwood, the screen siren lived a lot of life. But she was also much more than the studio pin-up Hollywood pegged her to be. Andrew Dominik’s “Blonde” doesn’t exactly make the case for her radiance and wit so much as it suggests she was an actress who was relentlessly exploited by her peers, by her partners, and by her audience.

We at IndieWire all have wildly varied takes on “Blonde,” whether as a “miserable portrait that only further tarnishes the star” to a hijacking of Marilyn Monroe’s legacy to make an “anti-choice statement.” But one point we can all agree on: Monroe was both a star and a serious actress, and we want to make the case for 10 of her finest...

‘Blonde’ Tells a Story of Marilyn Monroe That’s All Pain, No Pleasure
Image
If your stance is, rightly, that Marilyn Monroe was a kind of genius, an actress for whom the status of sex symbol comes with an asterisk, because she was not helplessly beholden to her iconic image — not merely a slave to the culture’s open-flied erotic hunger, not simply the fatuous, buxom blonde many mistook her to be, but rather an extremely savvy engineer of her own persona, a witty, whip-smart, and self-aware talent for whom the culture’s low expectations proved an opportune plaything instead of a hard limit...

When it comes to movies based on real events and people, Hollywood is known for making slight to substantial alterations to true stories for the purpose of cinematic narrative and entertainment. Madonna, Michelle Williams, Kerry Katona: Stars playing Marilyn Monroe
Kerry Katona
Jessica Chastain has been cast as Marilyn Monroe in director Andrew Dominik's upcoming biopic Blonde.

Brad Pitt's Plan B and Worldview Entertainment will produce the adaptation of Joyce Carol Oates's 2001 novel of the same title, which Naomi Watts originally signed up to star in.

From Michelle Williams to Kerry Katona, we compile 12 other actresses who have portrayed or paid tribute to Hollywood's original blonde bombshell below.

Michelle Williams

Michelle Williams was Oscar-nominated for her critically-acclaimed performance as Monroe in Simon Curtis's My Week with Marilyn (2011). The movie centered on Monroe's fraught relationship with her then co-star Laurence Olivier, played by Kenneth Branagh, during the production of The Prince and the Showgirl in Britain.

Reflecting upon the role, Williams said: "Gosh, sometimes I can't even believe I did it because the challenges were just...

Blonde (2001)
Jessica Chastain to star as Marilyn Monroe in Andrew Dominik's 'Blonde'
Blonde (2001)
I've been fascinated by Andrew Dominik's "Blonde," based on the Joyce Carol Oates book about Marilyn Monroe, for some time. A book like that, steeped in the division between myth and reality, wading into some dark corners, seems perfectly suited for the man who brought us the most complex take on the outlaw Jesse James to date with his 2007 masterpiece "The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford." Speculation has run rampant as to who would play Monroe in the film, and today, it looks like we have an answer, and that answer is Jessica Chastain. For some time, I wasn't even looking in Chastain's direction, to be perfectly honest. Naomi Watts was in the mix at one point. I was expecting any of a number of other actresses. Then Dominik let it slip in February that Chastain was at the top of his list. That happened...

Leaping Leotards! The Complete Photographic History Of The “Almost Vagina”
View Photo Gallery

When Miley Cyrus rocked onto stage at the EMAs this year sparking up a joint and wearing a labia skimming leotard, it was the latter that really sent the media into a tail spin. How Dare the girl almost show us her vagina? It’s been a big year all round for Miley’s “almost vagina,” with multiple performances and public appearances, not to mention a controversial Terry Richardson shoot (what!? really!?), showing off her flawless, ingrown hair free, pubic bone.

Despite Rashida Jones’ assertion that this was the year of the “Very Visible Vagina,” the truth of the matter is that the “almost vagina” is nothing new, and no matter how many puritans faint at the sight of it, it’s not going away. We say it’s time to embrace the “almost vagina,” to celebrate the women who have dared to almost bare, and to...

“Kill Your Darlings”: 5 Reasons The Gay Movie Deserves More Oscar Attention
Oscar season is always a time for moviegoer euphoria and repugnance. Yes, we get to see a bunch of fab movies, but we’re also aware of which films will end up getting more (and perhaps undeserved) Academy attention thanks to star power and studio campaigning. For every warranted triumph like 12 Years a Slave, there are underdog crowd-pleasers like Enough Said, Philomena, and my pick for the true underrated gem of the year, Kill Your Darlings.

With a charming Daniel Radcliffe as a young Allen Ginsberg during his days at Columbia, the film explores the beginnings of the Beat movement with Ginsberg’s pals Jack Kerouac (Jack Huston), William S. Burroughs (Ben Foster), and a defiant beaut named Lucien Carr (Dane DeHaan), who murders longtime acquaintance David Kammerer (Michael C. Hall) under mysterious circumstances. The movie is as much a bildungsroman of Ginsberg as it is a pulpy caper, and...

“Smash” – “Raise Your Hand If You’re A Pimp!”
Derek is compromised, Kyle inspires posthumously and Ivy works her muff

Previously, on Smash

So with golf overruns we open with the show already in progress because that’s how much respect NBC has for this show and its audience. But it’s some bit of business with that shapeless mess of a non-show Hit List so it doesn’t matter.

As the company dashes off for a costume change Daisy Parker, that dancer who accused Derek of sexual harassment and then vanished for months only to return on Bombshell‘s opening night to serve as Derek’s third-choice dick receptacle, tells Ana how wonderful her performance is and how terrified she would be if she ever had to go on in her place. Gosh, I wonder of that offhand comment has any greater significance?

Jimmy’s watching from the wings, dissatisfied with the show since it transferred to Broadway.

Daisy
Warning: By its very nature, the following recap contains spoilers. So if you haven’t seen this week’s Smash, exit stage left and come back to this URL later. Everyone else, read on!

This week on Smash, Jimmy continued lobbying for the “Most Ungrateful Fink on TV” award, Will and Grace Tom and Julia’s friendship hit more turbulence, Derek continued to let “little Derek” do all the thinking in their partnership and Ivy Lynn got smacked with a big reason to reconsider her nude scene in Bombshell. Oh, and a bitchy showdown between Ivy Lynn and Karen? Brrrrring it!

“Smash” Recap: “I Remember Penis”
Previously, on Smash: Liza!

We open closer to Christian Borle's face than we have any right to be.

Tom stands on a darkened stage, calling out for the company. Spotlights blaze on and as the company howls with laughter Tom realizes he's naked. He screams...

...and awakens in his bed. It was just a dream. He breathes a sigh of relief and rolls to his side, and spots Ellis in bed next to him.

Tom screams again and jerks awake. Julia rushes in and he starts to tell her about his horrible opening night dream. She tells him not to worry, that's weeks away. Tonight is “invited dress” where friends and family will be in attendance.

Derek and Ivy wake up next to each other at Ivy's place. Neither of them screams. He apologizes for staying over but she's Ok with it. As they dress they chat about their respective shows.

Jan-Michael Vincent in Hit List (1989)
Smash Recap: Parental Guidance Rejected
Jan-Michael Vincent in Hit List (1989)
There are two ways to look at Smash‘s final Tuesday-night outing: You could feel depressed that NBC is pushing its musical dramedy to Saturday nights, where it’ll be whacked with the Grim Reaper’s scythe like a piñata at a child’s birthday party. Or you could raise the adult beverage of your choice and rejoice that this week’s episode featured the indomitable Bobby and another one of his bitchy quips.

“This is boring,” our chorus boy sighed as Bombshell star Ivy Lynn made nice with her Broadway legend mama Leigh Conroy (Bernadette Peters) on their first day of rehearsal.

“Smash” Recap: Daddy/Mama Drama, or, The Parent Crap
Previously, on Smash

We open on a post-coital Karen shuffling to the kitchen in a t-shirt to make coffee. It's not the shirt she swiped from Jimmy Charming last episode, and shouldn't it be? Jimmy shuffles out after her wrapped in an afghan that you know Karen's grandmother knitted for her never dreaming it would end up wrapped around some greasy half-naked dude who defiled her granddaughter atop it.

They grossly let us know that they banged repeatedly and for hours and are about to do it again when the buzzer rings. Karen hits the intercom. It's her father (Dylan Baker), flown in from Iowa for a conference on milk machine technology or whatever the hell it is people from Iowa talk about. Karen's panicked but Jimmy thinks letting Dad know he defiled his daughter repeatedly atop her grandmother's quilt is the funniest thing ever. She forces him into his clothes and out the window,...

Elton John's Rocketman Biopic Blasts Off With New Director
Goodbye Norma Jean and the Yellow Brick Road. Hello Hollywood! It.s been about a year and a half since it was announced that Elton John would be producing his own musical biopic, and since then, there hasn.t been much news. Just about the only thing that.s publicly come out is that John wanted Justin Timberlake to play him for the film, which partly came true when Timberlake hosted SNL last week. Ranking "RuPaul's Drag Race"'s 7 Remaining Queens: Who Snatches the #1 Spot?
We knew it was coming, but RuPaul picked a tolerable week of Drag Race's fifth season not to eliminate either of the lip-syncing queens. Alyssa Edwards and Roxxxy Andrews both werqed the hell out of "Whip My Hair," evolving into action figures with wind-up head-spinning capacity. Since we don't have an eliminated queen to interview this week, let's take this moment to reflect on the competition and rank the seven remaining dames. Who's coming out on top? The answer shouldn't surprise you.

7. Alyssa Edwards

I find it so jarring when a queen is baffled by comedy challenges -- worse, I guess, is when she believes she's a contender in comedy challenges when she's anything but. Alyssa's bizarre confidence during last night's roast was so unjustified, I couldn't even look at her at the mic. Her jokeless "jokes"? Her tactlessly mean "punchlines"? They all reinforced a fact that's been apparent for...
