Peter Dinklage’s Singing ‘Cyrano,’ ‘The Godfather’ 50th Anniversary & Oscar Shorts Enter Parched Market For New Releases – Specialty Preview
Image
Joe Wright’s Cyrano twirls onto 797 screens, the highest-profile specialty release in weeks (as the market awaits Focus Features The Outfit with Mark Rylance and Sony Pictures Classics Mothering Sunday). But the well reviewed period musical romance from Uar starring Peter Dinklage is landing in a tough place. Industry estimates anticipate a low single digit opening given the inconsistent reception for movie musicals and the fact that its key older demos, especially women, have been the slowest to return to theaters.

Cyrano is based on Edmond Ronstand’s late 19th century drama Cyrano de Bergerac – itself loosely based on a French nobleman known for bold adventures and a large nose. It premiered at Telluride last year, had a weeklong LA theatrical run in Dec. and garnered an Oscar nomination for Costume Design (and BAFTA nom for Outstanding British Film of the Year). It’s 86% Certified Fresh with critics on Rotten Tomatoes.

Big Gold Brick Director Brian Petsos On Working With Oscar Isaac And Making An Oddball, Original Indie [Interview]
Andy Garcia
Did you know a new movie is coming out this week that stars Andy Garcia, Megan Fox, and Oscar Isaac?

"Big Gold Brick," the peculiar feature film debut from writer/director Brian Petsos, feels like a minor miracle in the modern movie landscape. That's not necessarily to say that its content is miraculous -- the film will not be for everyone, and Petsos is wholly aware of that. But it's a small movie with a recognizable cast, it's not based on any existing intellectual property, and, crucially, it's getting a theatrical release instead of just being poured directly into the void...

Big Gold Brick (2022)
Andy Garcia & Megan Fox & Oscar Isaac in 'Big Gold Brick' Trailer
Big Gold Brick (2022)
"Floyd – I've been looking for you..." Who's ready for something wacky and wild? Samuel Goldwyn Films has unveiled an official trailer for Big Gold Brick, a darkly comedic, genre-bending film from filmmaker Brian Petsos. Big Gold Brick recounts the story of fledgling writer Samuel Liston and his experiences with Floyd Deveraux, the enigmatic, middle-aged father of two who enlists Samuel to write his biography. But the circumstances that lead up to this arrangement are quite astonishing – and efforts to write the biography are quickly stymied by ensuing chaos. He hits this kid with a car then invites him to his home to write about him? Crazy. The cast might just be the best part about this: Emory Cohen, Andy Garcia, Megan Fox, Lucy Hale, and Oscar Isaac. This looks quite trippy and eccentric and absurd, which is the best kind of genre mix for this kind of strange ego-centric story.

In the Oscar-nominated Live Action Short The Letter Room, Elvira Lind (her Bobbi Jene in 2017 swept the Tribeca Film Festival documentary awards) explores loneliness in a variety of facets. Watch: Oscar Isaac is Terrific in This Bonkers Short Film — Ticky Tacky
I must admit that when I saw him in movies like Body of Lies, Sucker Punch, and Drive, I never anticipated that Oscar Isaac would become one of my favorite working actors. But he's built an incredible career in a few short years, and it's been great to watch him bring soulfulness, darkness, and charisma to his characters and become one of the most sought-after actors in the business. Yesterday was Isaac's birthday, and The Playlist pointed me toward this excellent short film in which the actor gives one of his best performances. Written and directed by Brian Petsos, Ticky Tacky tells the increasingly crazy story of a man who reacts very poorly when he receives some bad news.

Warner Bros. Puts Sundays In Its Diary
Sundays (2015)
Crafting an impressive short with ideas to burn is becoming an ever-more popular means for first-time filmmakers to get their foot in the studio door. Dracula Untold’s Gary Shore got his start that way, and this year’s Pixels was born from Patrick Jean’s video game-referencing work. Now Dutch ads and short film director Mischa Rozema has scored a deal with Warner Bros. on the back of his pitch film, Sundays, which you can watch below. Rozema’s concept, which he wrote with Kevin Koehler, finds Brian Petsos as a man who begins to realise that he himself and the world around him are not what they seem – indeed, the whole universe appears to be slowly falling apart. But can he trust even his own senses? The short definitely has overtones of The Matrix, Inception and even District 9 in its use of grungy visual style and dystopian ideas.

Directed by Mischa Rozema, the co-founder and creative director of PostPanic, Sundays is an ambitious pensive bit of sci-fi, the story of Ben (Brian Petsos), a man who slowly begins to realise that Isabelle (Sofia Sisniega), the only woman he has ever l [Continued ...]...

Watch Gorgeous SciFi Short Sundays Now!
We've been following the progress of Mischa Rozema's ultra ambitious scifi short Sundays for quite some time now here at Twitch. From the earliest days of the crowd funding support to send the crew to shoot on location in Mexico - a fund raising effort we happily supported - through to trailers and other materials hitting the public eye, we've just been more and more impressed by everything we've seen. And now we get to see it all.Set in Mexico City sometime in the future and starring Us actor Brian Petsos and Mexican actress Sofia Sisniega, Sundays is an ambitious philosophical science-fiction proof-of-concept short. The end of the world seems like a nightmare to Ben. A memory of a past life that doesn't belong to...

Watch: Trailer For Short Film 'Ticky Tacky' Starring Oscar Isaac
It seems Oscar Isaac likes keeping busy. With two movies out in 2013 ("Inside Llewyn Davis" and "In Secret" which premiered at Cannes and Tiff respectively), and three more coming in 2014 ("Mojave," "Ex Machina" and "A Most Violent Year"), the actor has even made time to star in a short film. And the first trailer is here. "Ticky Tacky" comes from writer/director Brian Petsos and follows a wealthy and powerful man who discovers his cousin/best friend slept with his girlfriend. The brief trailer provides a little taste, and there's definitely a nod to Wes Anderson in some of the staging/framing/set design but the tone is definitely far more hysterical, and it'll be interesting to see what the final shape of it looks like. There's no release date yet, but "Ticky Tacky" is expected to have a festival bow at some point, so keep your eyes peeled. Until then,...

Who doesn’t love a good revenge movie? From the likes of Charles Bronson in Death Wish to Camille Keaton in I Spit on Your Grave, revenge movies have been a staple of “the movies” for years. But there’s never been a revenge movie quite like Revenge For Jolly!

Everyone knows‘man’s best friend is his dog. But in Harry’s case his dog Jolly is not just his best friend, he is his only source of joy in life. In debt to the wrong kind of people Harry is thinking of skipping town and taking his dog Jolly with him. As a last hurrah before leaving he visits his cousin Cecil for dinner, returning home in the morning to pack up his life...

Watch The Gorgeous Teaser For SciFi Short Sundays
It was all the way back in June of 2012 that we first wrote about Mischa Rozema's scifi short Sundays. The occasion was the launch of a Kickstarter campaign to back the creation of the film and I was impressed enough with the visuals and pitch package that I threw down a few bucks myself and encouraged others to do the same. Money well spent. The first teaser for Rozema's creation has just arrived online and it looks every bit as good as I could have hoped.Shot on location in Mexico City with Brian Petsos in the lead the film posits a future in which computer power overtakes human intelligence and the consequences of that moment. Take a look at the fabulous teaser below and keep...

Girl Most Likely Blu-ray Review
After the blockbuster success of Bridesmaids, actress Kristen Wiig announced she’d be skipping the requisite sequel to try her hand at a more darkly comic role in a black comedy then-titled Imogene. Its basic storyline – a failed playwright (Wiig) moves in with her gambling addict mother (Annette Bening) after faking her own suicide – sounded teasingly reminiscent of beloved ‘90s seriocomedy Postcards from the Edge. But any hopes I had that Wiig and Bening might recapture that classic Streep/MacLaine chemistry quickly went out the window as the finished film – blandly re-titled Girl Most Likely - unspooled. Less a mother/daughter story than a young woman/weird world yarn, Girl Most Likely is a meandering film that fails as black comedy (it’s not black enough) or plain comedy (it’s not funny enough). Instead, it plays as 104 minutes of quirk, with Wiig stuck in the mediocre middle playing against her strengths.

"Girl Most Likely" To Kind Of Suck
From the moment the film starts with a disjointed flashback, Girl Most Likely feels like a trite and clichéd attempt at comedy. Obscurely named Imogene (Kristin Wiig) is down on her luck after her fiancé Peter (Brian Petsos) dumps her and she loses her job. In a desperate attempt to win back Peter, Imogene stages a suicide attempt. But it isn’t Peter who discovers her; it is their vapid, self-absorbed friend Dara (June Diane Raphael) who finds her, leading to her admittance into the psychiatric ward.

Kristen Wiig at an event for Sausage Party: Foodtopia (2024)
It's Over
Kristen Wiig at an event for Sausage Party: Foodtopia (2024)
Kristen Wiig and Fabrizio Moretti have reportedly split. Us Weekly learned that after 18 months, the couple has called it quits.

Wiig and Moretti were first caught smooching at a Black Keys concert in December 2011, but didn't publicly step out together until Ellie Kemper's wedding a few months later.

The "Bridesmaids" star is known for keeping quiet when it comes to her personal life, but in an August 2012 interview with Marie Claire she opened up. "I'm happier than I've ever been and I feel very lucky right now."

Wiig was formerly linked to producer Brian Petsos and was married to actor Hayes Hargrove for four years. Moretti dated Drew Barrymore from 2002 to 2007, which became a funny coincidence once he and Wiig got together. The "Saturday Night Live" star did a dead-on impression of Barrymore. In the January 2012 issue of Allure, Barrymore called their new relationship "wacky" and "incestuous." But she also said,...

Kristen Wiig at an event for Sausage Party: Foodtopia (2024)
Kristen Wiig and Fabrizio Moretti have decided to part ways after dating for over a year-and-a-half. A source confirms to People that the pair have split but will remain on good terms. "It's completely amicable," says an insider. "They are friends." In July 2012, Wiig, 39, told Marie Claire that she was "happier than I've ever been" because of "where I am now. Who [Moretti] is." Although the Despicable Me 2 star is notoriously tight-lipped about her private life, she was married to actor Hayes Hargrove for four years before the couple called it quits in 2009. She then dated producer Brian Petsos, whom she had known for 21 years.

Tiff 2012: Imogene Review
Over the years, I've written at length at how far too many indie comedies mistake quirk for character.  Characters feel like people.  They have emotions, goals, fears, etc.  A character can have quirks, but they can't be quirks.  Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini's Imogene is yet another example of an indie comedy that derives its comedy not from clever jokes, thoughtful set-ups and payoffs, or believable characters.  It attempts to get laughs from its miserable eponymous protagonist interacting with her goofy family of one-dimensional eccentrics.  As much as Imogene strives to coast on the wackiness of the characters, the best jokes in this shapeless comedy come from the little off-handed moments that slip through the tortured, hollow idiosyncrasies. Imogene Duncan (Kristen Wiig) is a failed playwright whose remaining scrapes of self-esteem are held by her ex-boyfriend, Peter (Brian Petsos).  In a desperate attempt to win him back, she...
