LA’s Micheaux Film Festival Locks 2024 Edition With Projects Featuring Viola Davis, Michael Ealy, Morris Chestnut & Michael Gandolfini

Exclusive: LA’s Micheaux Film Festival will officially run at The Culver Theater in Culver City from October 21 to October 27 with a selection of short and feature projects with talent such as Viola Davis and Morris Chestnut. Scroll down to see the featured lineup.

The festival, launched by Courtney L. Branch and Noel Braham to honor the legendary Oscar Micheaux, celebrates its sixth anniversary this year. The festival’s theme will be Champions, a celebration of “the resilience and determination of filmmakers who overcome countless obstacles to bring their visions to life.”

This year’s lineup includes more than 250 short films, feature films, and new media series with additional projects screening virtually. Titles include The Ebony Canal, a 46-minute feature on Black infant mortality rates narrated by Viola Davis. Also screening is The Origin, a project produced by Morris Chestnut, and Tea, a short project from filmmaker Blake Winston Rice featuring Michael Gandolfini.

James Cromwell Production ‘Mondo Hollywoodland’ Sets Release

Exclusive: Green Apple Entertainment has set a digital release for its recently acquired movie Mondo Hollywoodland from filmmaker Janek Ambros of Aug. 3 on Amazon, transactional VOD as well as a week’s run at Arena CineLounge in Hollywood.

Riffing on the title of the legendary X-rated 1967 documentary Mondo Hollywood by Robert Carl Cohen, Mondo Hollywoodland follows a mushroom dealer and a man from the 5th dimension as they look for all things groovy and the meaning of “mondo” in Los Angeles. Along the way, these two encounter the various factions of Hollywood as they all bumble through psychedelic-fueled introspection.

IMAX Saudi Deal, Edinburgh Line-Up, Screen Yorkshire, Nordisk Film, Kino Lorber, Assembly Line — Global Briefs
IMAX has inked a deal with Vox Cinemas, the Middle East’s largest exhibitor, for a minimum of four new theatres in Saudi Arabia. Four theatres will be added to new multiplexes in Riyadh. The first IMAX theatre has opened at Vox Cinemas’ Riyadh Park Mall venue. Vox Cinemas was awarded its licence to operate cinemas in the Kingdom and plans to invest SAR2B (Us$533.3M) to open 600 screens in Saudi Arabia over the next five years. Today’s agreement brings the IMAX contracted network in Saudi Arabia to at least five, with two currently open.

Kelly Macdonald’s Puzzle, which is directed by Big Beach principal Marc Turtletaub and was picked up earlier this year by Sony Pictures, will open the Edinburgh International Film Festival.
