The best psychological thrillers that animated the small screen in 2022
Image
‘Gunehgaar’, ‘The Fame Game’, ‘Mithya’, ‘Suzhal: The Vortex’ and ‘Delhi Crime-2’ were some of the most engrossing slow-burners of the year. Long format, procedural as well dramatic shows and teleplays added to the diverse viewing experience of audiences on the small screen in 2022. They brought along with them ample thrills, chills, and psychological intrigue. Here is our pick of the best, immersive entertainers from this lot.

The Fame Game

You may argue that the series that heralded Madhuri Dixit Nene in the Ott space frittered away its potential at the end but a second season may just redeem it. Yet, for the most part, this show was a perfect blend of drama, emotional heft, mystery, psychological layers, and histrionics with Dixit demonstrating why she is still considered one of the best actors to grace the silver screen. A moving performance by Manav Kaul, strong turns by Sanjay Kapoor, Suhasini Mulay,...

In Season 1, Brändström was the only female director; in Season 2 she is leading an all-female directing team.

Brändström — who directed Episodes 106/“Udûn,” which featured Season 1’s big battle scene and the Mount Doom’s eruption, and 107/“The Eye,” which chronicled its aftermath — will be directing four episodes and will also serve as co-executive producer this season. How Harvey Weinstein’s Real-Life Survivors Made ‘She Said’ Come to Life
Image
Five years after allegations surfaced against Harvey Weinstein, the bombshell investigation that exposed the movie titan to be a serial sexual abuser is getting the Hollywood treatment — and his victims are helping filmmakers tell the story. “She Said,” based on the book by New York Times investigative journalists Jodi Kantor and Megan Twohey, who first reported on Weinstein’s history of sexual harassment and assault in depth, hits theaters this weekend. The film doesn’t just center on the two reporters. It’s also about the women who came forward to expose Weinstein’s abuse across decades, igniting the hashtag #MeToo, blazing a cultural and societal fire of truth-telling and knocking down systemic abuses of power in the workplace. The Universal-distributed movie includes an unprecedented level of participation from these same women, many of whom advised the filmmakers and some of whom act on-screen.

When “She Said” premieres Nov.

Molly Windsor in Make Up (2019)
Exclusive: Molly Windsor on her memorable experience shooting the eerie and sensual Make Up
Molly Windsor in Make Up (2019)
Undoubtedly one of the British films of the year, it was our pleasure to have the opportunity to speak to the leading star, as we chatted on Zoom with Make Up’s Molly Windsor.

We discuss with the talented young actress (second time of asking – we had internet issues that scampered plans earlier in the day) the joys in tackling such a complex, nuanced role, and whether characters like this come around very often. She comments on her memorable experience shooting, and what it was like to be on the Cornish coast. She also talks about collaborating with director Claire Oakley, and finally on her rise through the industry, and why she feels there’s been such an influx of creative talent to have come out of the Midlands.

Watch the full interview with Molly below:

Synopsis

On a remote holiday park in Cornwall, a young woman is drawn into...

Make Up - Amber Wilkinson - 16129
Joseph Quinn
Claire Oakley's assured debut is all about liminal spaces, both physical and mental, the places and feelings that hang eerily between the concrete and the comforting. Set on a Cornish static caravan site, perched on a clifftop, a scrap of land between civilisation and the sea, this isn't a place full of holidaymakers but a patch of life in transition, as the year slips slowly into winter and the campers slip away.

It's where Tom (Joseph Quinn) has worked the winters for years and where Ruth (Molly Windsor) has come to join him for the first time, finally considered old enough by her parents. She is also in a halfway place, still somewhere between childhood and adulthood, leaving one but perhaps not quite arrived at the other, dipping her toe in the waters with help from fellow, slightly older worker Jade (Stefanie Martini). She has all the assurance Ruth lacks,...

Ken Loach in Route Irish (2010)
Make Up review – wintry chills in a spooky seaside thriller | Peter Bradshaw's film of the week
Ken Loach in Route Irish (2010)
A teenager encounters ghostly goings-on and sexual intrigue at an out-of-season caravan park in a stylish psychological drama

The out-of-season holiday resort, like the abandoned city or ruined temple, has something fascinating and even erotic in its emptiness. Writer-director Claire Oakley taps into this mood for her debut feature, a psychological drama-thriller set in a wintry caravan park in St Ives, Cornwall. She has taken the template of arthouse Brit realism and audaciously spiked it with some genre thrills, as if Ken Loach collaborated with Brian De Palma or Nicolas Roeg. With cinematographer Nick Cooke, Oakley finds the bracingly different aspects of the Cornish landscape: ominous in the darkness, wild in the sunshine and menacing in the cold, as distant sea spray mixes with the cloud cover.

Molly Windsor (whom I last saw 10 years ago as a child actor in Samantha Morton’s The Unloved) plays Ruth, a teenager who...

Molly Windsor in Make Up (2019)
First UK Trailer for Drama 'Make Up' Written/Directed by Claire Oakley
Molly Windsor in Make Up (2019)
"It's not about what it looks like, it's how it makes you feel." Artificial Eye in the UK has released an official trailer for an indie psychological drama titled Make Up, marking the feature directorial debut of English filmmaker Claire Oakley. This initially premiered at the London Film Festival last year, and it also played at the Rotterdam, Göteborg, and Glasgow Film Festivals this year. While at a remote holiday park in Cornwall, a young woman is drawn into a mysterious obsession when she suspects her boyfriend has cheated on her. The official synopsis adds: "Transforming her remote coastal setting into an intangible labyrinth of creeping intrigue, Claire Oakley inventively flirts with genre conventions to weave a singular tale of self-acceptance and sexual awakening." I'm intrigued. Molly Windsor stars as Ruth, with a cast including Joseph Quinn, Stefanie Martini, Theo Barklem-Biggs, Lisa Palfrey, and Elodie Wilton. This looks very moody and hauntingly atmospheric,...

Molly Windsor in Make Up (2019)
SXSW Review: Make Up is a Cold, Haunting Coming Out Thriller
Molly Windsor in Make Up (2019)
A haunting slow-burn thriller turned coming out story, Make Up is an atmospheric and somewhat provocative tale of Ruth (Molly Windsor), a young woman brought in the middle of the night to a trailer park overlooking the beach in Cornwall, England by boyfriend Tom (Joseph Quinn). Tom works long hours at a local factory, coming home late to Ruth, often loaded. The details are a bit sparse, relying mostly on mood and the tropes of psychological horror to pull the narrative together as Ruth has a series of encounters that, at times, often reminded me of a low-rent version of Peter Strickland’s lush In Fabric.

Directed by Claire Oakley, Make Up is a debut feature lensed in large part like a thriller as the misty atmosphere of a small tourist beach resort in the offseason leads Ruth, a plain Jane who wears little make-up, down some dark corners as...

Netflix Partners on BAFTA’s Breakthrough Brits; Initiative Expands Internationally
Netflix has signed on as a partner on BAFTA’s Breakthrough Brits, the program that supports up-and-coming U.K. talent.

BAFTA said the partnership with the streaming giant will help facilitate expansion of its “Breakthrough” initiative globally, and the partners will work to identify overseas talent in new territories. This year’s scheme is open to Brits residing in the U.K. and the U.S. In the future, the intention is to widen the list of qualifying countries, and possibly to broaden the whole program to go beyond just talented Brits, a BAFTA spokesman told Variety.

Netflix is deepening its roots in the U.K. amid talk that the company is looking for permanent studio space as it increases the number of its British-originated shows. Netflix is taking over from fashion brand Burberry as BAFTA’s main partner on Breakthrough Brits, which was started in 2013.
