Why Chuck Lorre's Controversial Sitcom The United States Of Al Was Canceled
Image
Clearly, not everything's gold that comes from the King of Sitcoms, Chuck Lorre. The veteran TV producer and writer might've produced such hits as "The Big Bang Theory," "Two and a Half Men," or "The Kominsky Method," but also had his fair share of missteps. According to some critics and viewers, one of those is the short-lived comedy series "United States of Al," which was created by David Goetsch and Maria Ferrari, with Lorre serving as showrunner and executive producer for the two years the sitcom was on CBS between 2021 and 2022.

The plot focused on the friendship between a Marine war veteran, Riley (Parker Young), and an Afghan interpreter, Awalmir aka Al (Adhir Kalyan), who served together in the same unit while in Afghanistan. Naturally, the show takes place after their service as the two reunite, with Al arriving in the United States to live with Riley and his father,...

CBS Cancels ‘United States of Al’ After Two Seasons
Image
CBS has canceled the Chuck Lorre-produced sitcom “United States of Al” after two seasons, Variety has confirmed.

“United States of Al” centers on the relationship between Marine combat veteran Riley (Parker Young) and his Afghan interpreter Awalmir, or “Al” (Adhir Kalyan), who finally lands a visa allowing him passage into the United States. Riley, who has separated from his wife, makes room for Al in his Ohio home, and together they struggle to adjust to their post-combat lives.

Creators David Goetsch and Maria Ferrari, who worked for Lorre on “The Big Bang Theory,” began kicking around the idea for “Al” after seeing stories on the plight of 17,000 Afghan interpreters who have been promised asylum in the United States, but are still waiting to be granted entry. Many of the stories depicted the bond that often developed between veterans and their interpreters.

In Season 1, Goetsch and Ferrari put together a team of seven writers,...

United States of Al Cancelled at CBS
Image
CBS is seceding from the United States of Al. The Eye network has cancelled the Chuck Lorre comedy after two seasons, TVLine has confirmed.

Hammocked between CBS’ top two sitcoms (Young Sheldon and Ghosts) on Thursday nights, Al‘s sophomore run has been averaging 5.9 million total weekly viewers and a 0.6 demo rating (with Live+7 playback), steady in audience and down just a tick in the demo from its Season 1 tallies. Out of the seven sitcoms CBS has aired this TV season, it ranks fifth in audience (ahead of B Positive and How We Roll) and ties for No. 5 in the demo.

‘United States of Al’ Canceled By CBS After 2 Seasons
Image
Exclusive: The Chuck Lorre-produced sophomore CBS comedy series United States of Al will not return for a third season. I hear the network made the calls to inform the series’ auspices this evening.

For two years in a row, the Chuck Lorre-produced comedies B Positive and United States of Al have been on the bubble. Last year, both of them ultimately got renewed. This time around, as Deadline reported last month, there was talk that only one of the two might join Lorre’s Young Sheldon and Bob Hearts Abishola on the 2022-23 schedule, with B Positive having an edge. In light of United States of Al‘s cancellation, B Positive‘s renewal chances look brighter.

Also remaining on the bubble at CBS are drama Magnum Pi, which had been stuck in renewal conversations with lead studio Universal TV, freshman comedy How We Roll as well as freshman drama Good Sam,...

CBS comedy United States of Al premiered two weeks before the U.S. announced its withdrawal from Afghanistan.

Its second season, which began production in August, will address the withdrawal and subsequent fallout in its opening episode, according to CBS Entertainment President Kelly Kahl.

The series, is about the friendship between Riley, a Marine combat veteran struggling to readjust to civilian life in Ohio, and Awalmir (Al), the Interpreter who served with his unit in Afghanistan and has just arrived to start a new life in America.

Speaking at his opening address ahead of the network’s virtual TCA press tour, Kahl said, “Chuck Lorre and his gifted team of writers and actors, some of whom are veterans, some natives of Afghanistan, some with deep ties to the country, have been working hard to find the appropriate tone as the show moves forward. The team penned an entirely new first...

B Positive and United States of AI Renewed for Season 2 at CBS
Image
This bodes well for Drew Dunbar’s kidney transplant: CBS has renewed Chuck Lorre’s B Positive for Season 2, TVLine has learned. Additionally, the Eye network has renewed Lorre’s other freshman sitcom, United States of AI, for a second season.

B Positive centers on the aforementioned Drew (played by Silicon Valley‘s Thomas Middleditch), a therapist and newly divorced dad who is faced with needing a kidney donor. He soon reconnects with Gina Dabrowski (Masters of Sex‘s Annaleigh Ashford), a rough-around-the-edges woman from his past who volunteers her own.

‘B Positive’ & ‘United States of Al’, From Chuck Lorre, Renewed By CBS For Season 2
Image
Chuck Lorre’s freshman comedies B Positive and The United States of Al have both been renewed for second seasons.

B Positive, the Thomas Middleditch and Annaleigh Ashford-fronted show was the first new CBS show to debut as part of the 2020/21 broadcast season and was the second new show of the season, after ABC’s Big Sky, to receive a back order.

Both shows are airing as part of CBS’ Thursday comedy slate alongside Young Sheldon and Mom, and while neither show has been a breakout hit, comedy traditionally takes longer to find an audience.

Created by former Mom co-executive producer Marco Pennette inspired by personal experience, B Positive is about a therapist and newly divorced dad (Middleditch) who is faced with finding a kidney donor when he runs into a rough-around-the-edges woman from his past (Ashford) who volunteers her own. Together they form an unlikely bond and begin...

United States of Al: Grade the Premiere of Chuck Lorre's Latest CBS Comedy
Image
A few short years after CBS threw its poorly received Odd Couple reboot to the wolves, the Eye network launched a new odd-couple comedy Thursday — this one from sitcom giant Chuck Lorre, who now stakes claim to the entire sitcom block.

United States of Al — which is sandwiched between fellow Lorre-produced laffers Young Sheldon and Mom, forcing yet another one of his comedies, B Positive, to move to a later time — centers on the friendship between Riley (Enlisted‘s Parker Young), a Marine combat veteran struggling to readjust to civilian life in Ohio; and Al (Rules of Engagement‘s Adhir...

‘United States of Al’ Wants to Be Likable, Forgets to Be Interesting: TV Review
Image
Here’s a complete list of things we learn about Awalmir, or “Al,” in the first four episodes of the new show ostensibly about him: Al (Adhir Kalyan) is a friendly Afghan translator. Al loves qorma-e-sabzi (an Afghan spinach stew), his mother, sister, countless cousins, and best American friend Riley (Parker Young), a former Marine who retained Al’s services while stationed in Afghanistan. Al is extremely respectful of everyone he meets, though he can also be competitive. A devout Muslim, Al had never seen a woman’s bare legs before meeting his driving test administrator in Ohio. End of list.

“United States of Al,” premiering April 1 on CBS, is the latest sitcom from Chuck Lorre Productions that both seems to anticipate possible criticisms and walk right into the traps that would inspire them. Created by “The Big Bang Theory” alumni David Goetsch and Maria Ferrari, and executive produced by Reza Aslan and Mahyad Tousi,...

New CBS Comedy ‘United States Of Al’ Swaps Thursday Time Period With ‘B Positive’
Image
Chuck Lorre’s new CBS comedy United States of Al is moving to a new time slot on Thursday nights. The series, which premieres April 1, will move to 8:30 pm Et/Pt following Young Sheldon. B Positive, which was previously in the 8:30 pm slot, will shift to 9:30 pm Et/Pt slot following Mom.

With United States of Al being a new series, the network wanted the strongest possible lead-in and decided it made sense for it to follow the top-rated Young Sheldon.

B Positive, starring Thomas Middleditch and Annaleigh Ashford, received a five-episode back order in December, taking its full season to 18 episodes.

All four series in CBS’ two-hour Thursday comedy block come from comedy super-producer Lorre. It’s believed to be the first time a comedy writer-producer has controlled an entire two-hour block of half-hour programming on one network.

United States of Al stars Adhir Kalyan and...

Al Wants to Experience All of America, but Mostly Costco, in CBS’ ‘United States of Al’ Trailer (Video)
Chuck Lorre
CBS has debuted the trailer for Chuck Lorre’s “United States of Al,” and it’s going to be quite a culture shock for the characters.

The premise of the show sees Awalmir, a.k.a. Al (Adhir Kalyan), arriving in America to begin a new life. He is staying with marine combat veteran Riley (Parker Young) for whom he worked with as an interpreter in Afghanistan.

Hilarity (hopefully) ensues.

In the trailer, when Riley picks his kid’s godfather up from the airport, Al announces that he wants to experience all that America has to offer.

“I want to see everything: Washington, D.C., Las Vegas, and what’s the name of that place that sells peanut butter and brings it to you on a forklift,” Awalmir asks his host.

“Costco,” Riley replies.

Watch the trailer via the video above.

Dean Norris (“Breaking Bad”) also stars on “United States...

Hailing from Big Bang Theory vets David Goetsch and Maria Ferrari, the new comedy focuses on the friendship between Riley (Enlisted‘s Parker Young), “a Marine combat veteran struggling to readjust to civilian life in Ohio,” and Awalmir aka “Al” (Rules of Engagement‘s Adhir Kalyan), “the interpreter who served with his unit in Afghanistan and has just arrived to start a new life in America,” according to the official logline.

Sam Elliott, Debra Winger, Ashton Kutcher, and Danny Masterson in The Ranch (2016)
‘The Ranch’ Part 3 Sneaks a Pro-Choice Argument Into a Superficially Conservative Season
Sam Elliott, Debra Winger, Ashton Kutcher, and Danny Masterson in The Ranch (2016)
“The Ranch” is a deceptive series. At its onset, the Netflix multi-cam comedy feels like a natural follow-up for Ashton Kutcher post-“Two-and-a-Half Men.” There’s a laugh track, a dozen of crude sex jokes per episode (minimum), and a simple, repetitious structure where most of the comedy stems from grown men acting like children — and then being called out for it by the series’ female characters.

Those who stuck with it for more than a few episodes (because they were bored, dead, or masochistic) discovered the comedy’s hidden secret: It’s a tragedy, and not for Kutcher’s disgraced former quarterback, forced to move home after squandering his talent by drinking and womanizing. It’s about his father, Beau, played by Sam Elliott. We’ve chronicled his struggles in the past, and they do continue (to a lesser degree) in Part 3, the latest block of episodes released on Netflix.
