‘The Windmill Massacre’ Review (Horror Channel)
Image
Stars: Charlotte Beaumont, Patrick Baladi, Ben Batt, Fiona Hampton, Noah Taylor | Written by Suzy Quid, Chris W. Mitchell | Directed by Nick Jongerius

Massacre this, massacre that… Thanks to the infamy of Tobe Hooper’s now-classic 70s exploitation shocker The Texas Chainsaw Massacre it seems that we can’t escape a horrifying cinematic massacre… The latest film to share this horror moniker is The Windmill Massacre – an odd title, and an even odder location for a horror movie. But, to steal a much-maligned English idiom, don’t judge a book by its cover. Or in this case, a film by it’s title.

The Windmill Massacre tells the story of Jennifer, an Australian girl on the run who – after having her secret discovered at the Amsterdam home she works at as a nanny – joins a coach load of tourists on an idyllic rural tour of Holland’s world-famous windmills. However when...

Sky’s Ancient Rome Series ‘Domina’ With Isabella Rossellini, Liam Cunningham & Kasia Smutniak Resumes Filming At Italy’s Cinecitta
Image
Exclusive: Cameras are rolling again on Sky’s Ancient Rome series Domina, marking the broadcaster’s largest-scale production to get back underway to date.

Cast and crew have returned to set at historic studios Cinecitta in Italian capital Rome following several weeks of pre-production work after the country’s lockdown was eased. The show is led by Kasia Smutniak (Dolittle), Liam Cunningham (Game Of Thrones) and Isabella Rossellini (Blue Velvet).

The production is employing a variety of virus preventative measures including distancing on set, making sure everyone completes safety training prior to accessing the site, and creating dedicated pools of crew and actors, with closed sets when possible. Sky Studios CEO Gary Davey recently said the company was also working with producers to create virus-related contingency in the event of further lockdowns.

As Deadline reported last month, Sky is edging closer to being back underway on a number of big-ticket shows.

Hungarian Location Doubles for Colonial Virginia in PBS Series ‘Jamestown’
Carnival Films, the production company behind “Downton Abbey,” tackles 1620s America with the series “Jamestown” — a production that took place nowhere near Virginia, site of the original Jamestown colony. Instead the show was shot at locations just outside Budapest, where a Southern drawl has seldom been heard.

Yet tax incentives often speak louder than words, as do low labor costs. That’s why it was decided to re-create the historic Jamestown settlement in Central Europe, where the team worked with period experts and studied historical records to build an accurate reproduction of the town and nearby village of the Native American Pamunkey tribe.

Unlike many location builds, which remain in place for a relatively short period of time, the “Jamestown” buildings are outdoor, stable structures intended to stand for years.

With Season 2 about to premiere in the U.S. on PBS on Nov. 21, production just wrapped in Hungary on Season...

The Windmill is More of a Butcher Shop: A Film Review
*full disclosure: an online screener of this film was provided by Mongrel Media. **there are a few minor spoilers here. Director: Nick Jongerius. Writers: Nick Jongerius, Chris W. Mitchell and Suzy Quid. Cast: Noah Taylor, Charlotte Beaumont, Patrick Baladi, Adam Thomas Wright and Ben Batt. Nick Jongerius' first feature film was initially titled The Windmill Massacre. In the United States and Canadian markets, the film has been renamed to the much more placid The Windmill. Jongerius bloody trip to the Netherlands, involves an ancient urban legend. Several morally corrupt holidaymakers are set to interact with the killer in this urban legend, first hand. And, The Windmill relies on a Catholic morality, in which sinners must be punished. This is the Old Testament though, so there is no forgiveness on the horizon, for anyone. Then, characters face a supernatural villain. Everything favours this burned and scarred killer. And, The Windmill is often entertaining,...

The Windmill Review
Dutch horror films don’t get any more on-brand than The Windmill. Maybe a horror movie about the little Dutch boy who plugged that dam and saved Holland? Nah. Big, wooden windmills acting as a gateway to Hell screams Dutch horror, much like the Australian main character, the Asian sidekick….alright, there’s a bit more diversity past locale stereotyping. In any case, director Nick Jongerius spills buckets of gore all over the Netherlands, as a demon dispatches sinners with his all-healing scythe. Heads roll in the name of soulful enlightenment, because karma is quite the bitch in this European slasher import. Grab your clogs and throw on a poncho, because Holland’s hottest sightseeing tour is about to get messy. Like messy/gory, but also messy scripting, and messy crafting.

The film’s protagonist ends up being Jennifer (Charlotte Beaumont), a homeless Aussie transplant who just got outted as being an illegal.

Q&A with The Windmill Director Nick Jongerius
In his new film, The Windmill, Nick Jongerius transforms one of Holland's picturesque tourist attractions into a hub of blood-soaked horror. With XLrator Media releasing The Windmill on VOD and iTunes this Tuesday, followed by a theatrical release on October 28th, we caught up with Jongerius for our latest Q&A feature.

Thanks for taking the time to answer some questions for us, Nick. When did you first come up with the idea for The Windmill?

Nick Jongerius: My pleasure. Thanks for your interest in the film. I first started thinking about the idea for this film after Frankenstein's Army. Our investors at that time were really interested in Holland, especially Amsterdam—the dikes, windmills, clogs, etc. This triggered me. I thought, "What if we use these famous touristic symbols of Holland and drench them in blood? Sort of turning it upside down. From there we shot a proof of concept,...

‘The Windmill’ Exclusive Clip: A Group of Tourists Encounter a Mysterious Evil In The Dutch Countryside
The Windmill (2016)
XLrator Media, the distribution company behind John Ridley’s “Jimi: All is By My Side,” “The Machine,” and more, will soon release the new horror film “The Windmill,” starring Noah Taylor, best known for his performances in “Game of Thrones,” “Almost Famous,” and “The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou.” The film follows a group of unsuspecting tourists who discover a mysterious evil while traveling through the Dutch countryside. When their bus breaks down, they’re forced to seek shelter besides a windmill where supposedly a Satan-obsessed miller grinds peoples’ bones instead of grain. It co-stars Charlotte Beaumont (“Jupiter Ascending”), Patrick Baladi (“Rush”), Tanroh Ishida (“The Railway Man”) and Ben Batt (“Captain America: The First Avenger”). Weekender – review
The actors do their best, but this homage to the 90s rave scene is rammed with cliches and silliness

Doing justice to the rave scene on screen isn't easy, though Justin Kerrigan managed it with charm and wit in his 1999 movie Human Traffic. This film, sadly, is something else again: it's rammed with cliches and silliness and conforms to a lot of stereotypes, the most suspect being the obligatory scene in Ibiza whose only purpose is to show loads of young women with no tops on. Jack O'Connell and Henry Lloyd-Hughes play a couple of likely lads in 1990 who start organising warehouse parties, and get sucked into the dark side of violence and drugs. The actors do their best, and Ben Batt is strong as the appalling John the Rat, but this is weak and the ending ("Trust me – it's over") is just ridiculous.

Rating: 2/5
