“Oh man y’all are delusional…”: Ewan McGregor’s Alleged Cheating Scandal With Mary Elizabeth Winstead Caused His Daughter to Use Some Very Harsh Words For the Actress
Image
Ewan McGregor and Mary Elizabeth Winstead’s romance has been anything but smooth, particularly given the chilly reception from McGregor’s oldest daughter. About six months after McGregor filed for divorce from his now ex-wife Eve Mavrakis, eldest daughter, Clara McGregor made her feelings about Winstead, pretty clear, and let’s just say, her feedback was anything but flattering.

McGregor’s daughter later issued an apology, admitting that her harsh words about Winstead were far from her finest moment. She then took the opportunity to explain her side of the situation, providing context for her earlier comments.

Ewan McGregor’s Oldest Daughter Called Mary Elizabeth Winstead a “Piece of Trash”

Ewan McGregor and Mary Elizabeth Winstead‘s love story has a pretty messy start. They first met on the set of Fargo in late 2016. At that time, McGregor was still married to his wife,...

The Sci-Fi Thriller Where People Fight Their Own Clones To the Death
Image
The best thing about science fiction movies is that they are places that allow the strangest dreams of humanity to play out in a safe place but to thrilling, terrifying, and sometimes hilarious effect. They are visual experiments in thought and philosophy and allow for the exploration of some very highbrow concepts. Sci-fi movies allow us the space to ask the big questions, what is life, what does it mean to live, and what does it mean to be human? Further still, they can delve deep into a person's inner life. Who am I? What am I? Dual (2022) is a satirical science fiction thriller written, directed, and produced by Riley Stearns, that explores these existential themes. The film stars Karen Gillan, Beulah Koale, Theo James, and Aaron Paul of Breaking Bad fame. Stearns does an exceptional job of poking fun at the absurdities of life and the natural human fear of dying and being forgotten,...

“I wasn’t writing his name in my notebook”: Mary Elizabeth Winstead had a Massive Crush on Ewan McGregor Long Before They Had Their First Meet
Image
After collaborating on the crime drama TV series Fargo, Ewan McGregor and Mary Elizabeth Winstead extended their romantic relationship from the screen to real life. The couple joined the cast during season 3 of Noah Hawley’s series and played each other’s romantic interests. They first met on the set of the show in 2017.

Riley Stearns was Winstead’s ex-husband at the time, while McGregor was still married to Eve Mavrakis. The Fargo costars began dating shortly after their respective marriages ended. The Mercy Street actress may be a talented actress in her own right, but she could not resist the allure of her now-husband, Ewan McGregor.

Jesse Eisenberg on His Wide-Ranging Performance in New Film Manodrome
Image
From Mark Zuckerberg to Lex Luthor, Academy Award-nominated actor Jesse Eisenberg has played a wide variety of roles over the years. His most recent role is in the surreal winter film Manodrome. This definitely isn't A Christmas Story — the film follows Ralphie (Eisenberg), a man in New York who becomes increasingly paranoid, sexually confused, and violent after he finds out his partner back home (Odessa Young) is pregnant.

From director John Trengove, the head-spinning new Manodrome further proves the versatility of Eisenberg, who's been a performer to keep note of ever since the days of The Squid and the Whale. Just when you think you're familiar with the facets of Eisenberg, he goes and transforms a character in the most surprising of ways, something he does here with wonderful results. We recently caught up with Jesse Eisenberg to learn more about the challenges — or lack thereof — behind tackling the infamous...

‘The Whale’ Swims To 11+ Million Cume, ‘Saint Omer’ Sees Solid NY/LA Open As Awards Race Picks Up – Specialty Box Office
Image
A24’s The Whale crossed the 11-million mark in week six as it jumped to 1,500 screens from 835 as the Brendan Fraser-starrer and other contenders continue to tweak theatrical runs through awards season.

The film, which received a PGA nomination for Best Motion Picture this week along with SAG noms for Fraser and co-star Hong Chau, grossed 1.45 million for the three days weekend and 1.8 million for the four days, including Martin Luther King Jr. on Monday. Former action star Fraser, who plays a morbidly obese, reclusive English teacher, is no. 8 at the domestic box office with a cume of 11.1 million.

Box office newbie, Super’s Saint Omer, opened on 245 screens with a 62.5k three-day weekend and 255 per screen average. At its three core NY/LA locations, the Alice Diop film, France’s shortlisted Oscar submission for Best International Feature, grossed 21k, or a...

New to Streaming: Armageddon Time, Triangle of Sadness, Something in the Dirt, Lucrecia Martel & More
Image
Each week we highlight the noteworthy titles that have recently hit streaming platforms in the United States. Check out this week’s selections below and past round-ups here.

Armageddon Time (James Gray)

Armageddon Time is the sort of film usually invoked as a “portrait of the nation” or “state of the union address,” something taking the temperature of a country—most likely the United States—at a particular time in history. But it’s also a work that makes self-consciousness a virtue: its wonderful writer-director, James Gray, is informed up to his eyes about the virtues and pitfalls of films like these, and here makes something so idiosyncratically his own but that audiences and critics might still mislabel with one of those aforementioned ideas. – David K. The Best TV Shows And Movies Coming To Hulu And Disney+ In November 2022
Image
As we all mourn the end of the Halloween season and brace ourselves for the seemingly unending parade of holidays based on familial obligations or gross displays of capitalism, November is here to serve as a little respite. Many of the horror movies that disappeared off streaming platforms to try and snag some extra Halloween funds in October are returning to their respective platforms, but the trickling in of cheesy Christmas fare is also coming in fast.

Fortunately, there's a massive amount of old favorites and exciting new titles trying to beat the holiday havoc, and we've got five between Hulu and Disney+ that you would be wise to check out. Action? Teen movies? Horror comedies? Musicals? Weirdly bleak arthouse film with surprising brutality? November has it all, baby.

Baz Luhrmann in The Great Gatsby (2013)

“Elvis” (Warner Bros. You don’t even have to like the late legend’s music to enjoy this juggernaut of sensation, just find a friend with a giant-screen TV (this one’s already available in 4K) and very loud sound.

‘Look at Me’ Trailer: Chris Rock Confronts Javier Bardem in Tense Venice Short
Image
Chris Rock makes a stop at the 2022 Venice Film Festival thanks to Sally Potter’s short film, “Look at Me.”

The 16-minute film stars Rock as a gala organizer who tries to rein in a stubborn drummer (Javier Bardem) ahead of the on-stage performance. Tap dancer Savion Glover also stars. “Look at Me” premieres Out of Competition at Venice.

Director Potter originally conceived the concept of the film as a short story to be featured in her 2020 film “The Roads Not Taken,” starring Bardem as a writer in the early stages of dementia. “Look at Me” was filmed in 2019 over the course of five days in London and New York. The short film is produced by Christopher Sheppard.

“When I got into the cutting room, I saw how dynamic these titans of the entertainment world are together, their volatile, fiery on-screen relationship offset by the rhythms of the brilliant tap dancer Savion Glover,...

‘Dual’ Review

Stars: Karen Gillan, Beulah Koale, Aaron Paul, Theo James, Maija Paunio, June Hyde | Written and Directed by Riley Stearns

Karen Gillan plays dual roles in this sci-fi black comedy about a terminally ill woman who clashes with the clone she orders to replace her after she’s gone. The third feature from writer-director Riley Stearns, it’s a decidedly offbeat, darkly funny satire that grapples with some big questions.

Dual is set in a world where the terminally ill are permitted to clone themselves, with the replacement taking over their lives once the patient dies. However, there’s a catch – if, for some reason, the patient survives their illness, the clone and the original must duel to the death in front of a television audience, with the survivor earning the right to the identity in question. We see a taste of this in the prologue, with a young man (Theo...

Angelika CEO Ellen Cotter, SPC’s Tom Bernard On Urgency Of Wooing Older Arthouse Crowd Right Now – Specialty Preview
Image
“I see nothing happening on a major scale to try to get the older audiences back to theaters,” griped Sony Pictures Classics’ co-president Tom Bernard.

Ideally, Bernard wants NATO to trumpet cinema safety in a big public campaign. (A NATO rep says not in the cards.) He’d like that campaign alongside a creative marketing push by independent movie chains, combined with a steadier flow of specialty films with wider appeal. That could include SPC’s upcoming The Duke, Jazz Fest: A New Orleans Story and The Phantom of the Open.

Focus Features’ bellwether Downton Abby: A New Era is the big test. If the Crawley family can’t rout lingering Covid jitters and force of habit to nudge older demos off home screens, then nothing can.

Hoping to prime the pump for this potential spring rebound, SPC and the Angelika Film Center this week unveiled “Bring A Friend Back To The Movies,...

Dual Director Riley Stearns On Mentor Characters And Subverting Expectations [Interview]
Riley Stearns
In his films, writer/director Riley Stearns has often played around with morbid comedy, the dark relationships between mentors and students, and the challenges in finding one's place in the world –- all while his characters keep deadly straight faces. In his latest movie, "Dual," those themes are revisited in spectacular, downbeat sci-fi fashion as Sarah (Karen Gillan) clones herself in the wake of a terminal diagnosis. When she's inexplicably cured, she's faced with the surprising revelation that either she or the clone must die in a duel to the death.

Riley Stearns: The Indie Filmmaker Who Wants a Bigger Audience but Knows He’s Not Meant for Marvel

“Dual” writer-director Riley Stearns, whose latest film stars Karen Gillan and Aaron Paul in the tale of a woman who must fight her clone to the death, may be unlike every other indie filmmaker: Not only should he not direct a comic book movie, Stearns told IndieWire, but if he did, it wouldn’t be a good one.

“There are people who their favorite thing in the world as a kid was comics and they want to go into that world, and I fully support that,” Stearns said. “I just don’t think people want want me directing a comic book movie. I didn’t read comics. If I directed one, I would probably make a bad one. I think that it’s better that I stick with the stuff that I like and the trajectory I like. “Dual” is a new satirical science fiction thriller, written and directed by Riley Stearns, starring Karen Gillan, Beulah Koale, Theo James, and Aaron Paul, opening April 15, 2022:

“…in the near future, ‘Sara’ learns she is terminally ill. To save her family from the pain of losing her, she opts for a cloning procedure of herself and trains the clone to feel like her. But then Sara makes a miraculous recovery, which drives her to a new problem: in the society of the future, humans cannot exist for longer than the time limit of their clones. And now, by law, Sara and her clone must eventually fight each other to the death…”

Karen Gillan in Dual (2022)
Official Trailer for Riley Stearn's Low Key Sci-Fi 'Dual' with Karen Gillan
Karen Gillan in Dual (2022)
"You're pretending to be me while I'm still alive?" Rlje Films has revealed the first official trailer for the indie sci-fi film Dual, the latest from American filmmaker Riley Stearns. This initially premiered at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year playing in the main competition, but got pretty bad reviews from most critics who watched it. It's a very low key sci-fi in that has a "futuristic" concept involving cloning, but there's not much beyond that that is sci-fi about it. A woman opts for a cloning procedure after she receives a terminal diagnosis but when she recovers her attempts to have her clone decommissioned fail, leading to a court-mandated duel to the death with her other self. Let them fight! Karen Gillan stars opposite Karen Gillan, along with Aaron Paul, Beulah Koale, Maija Paunio, and Theo James. I saw this at Sundance and was hoping to love it,...

Dual Trailer: Karen Gillan is Seeing Double in Riley Stearns’ Sci-Fi Drama
Image
Following his deadpan dark comedies Faults and The Art of Self-Defense, Riley Stearns heads into sci-fi territory with Dual, which still finds slivers of humor in a story of a terminally ill woman who opts for a cloning procedure to ease her loss on her friends and family. When she makes a miraculous recovery, her attempts to have her clone decommissioned fail and lead to a court-mandated duel to the death. Ahead of an April 15 theatrical release, the trailer has now arrived.

Michael Frank said in his Sundance review, “Stearns, critically successful in his first two films, will likely find a more divisive audience with Dual, which bears an outstanding premise and mixed execution. Starring Karen Gillan as Sarah, this light sci-fi drama looks like the current world. Little has been altered; if anything the technology looks like it’s from the 1990s. The only difference seems to be a...

Dual Trailer: It's Karen Gillan Vs. Karen Gillan
Riley Stearns
Director Riley Stearns is the kind of creative whose movies garner critical acclaim, serve as film festival darlings, and allow actors to play characters beyond what they're typically given by Hollywood. And yet he hasn't been able to make the jump to become a household name. It's still up for debate whether or not his third film, "Dual" will help bridge the gap, but with Karen Gillan, Beulah Koale, Theo James, and Aaron Paul starring in...

Riley Stearns on Creating the World of Dual, Capturing Loneliness, and Directing Karen Gillan’s Double Performance
Image
Dual, the third feature from writer/director Riley Stearns, follows a young woman named Sarah (Karen Gillan), who opts to be replaced with a “double” after finding out she’s terminally ill. With a deadpan delivery and a dry sense of humor, the film and its characters navigate this alternate world, one that requires a duel to the death in Sarah’s unique situation. Sarah must learn to become violent, accept brutality into her personality, resetting herself in a way.

Stearns’ newest draws clear inspiration from Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos, a comparison many are likely to make, but he still wants it to be a “Riley film.” He revisits certain threads from his first two films, Faults and The Art of Self-Defense, with the idea of a character learning how to alter themselves to feel safer or the need to fundamentally shift as a means of self-preservation.

Dual finds humor in Sarah’s situation,...

How a Hip-Hop Dance Scene in ‘Dual’ Lightened the Bleak Mood on Set for Aaron Paul and Karen Gillan (Video)
Karen Gillan in Dual (2022)
“Dual,” the latest film from director Riley Stearns that stars Karen Gillan and Aaron Paul, contains humor amid a bleak premise.

Gillan stars in the film as a woman who gets a terminal diagnosis and chooses to pursue a cloning procedure to ease the emotional toll on her friends and family when she’s gone. But when she makes a miraculous recovery, she attempts to have her clone decommissioned, which leads to said clone taking action to hang onto her life by suing for a court-mandated duel to the death of original vs. the double.

“I just really liked the idea of confronting oneself and like finding out who you are, who you want to be, who you don’t want to be, all those themes are really intriguing to me,” Stearns said at TheWrap’s virtual Sundance studio. “Once I figured out the whole duel to the death aspect of it,...

Dual Review: Karen Gillan Tries To Kill Her Double In Riley Stearns' Dark Comedy [Sundance 2022]
Riley Stearns
Riley Stearns, the filmmaker behind 2014's "Faults" and 2019's "The Art of Self-Defense," returns to Sundance with "Dual," an odd dark comedy which sits comfortably in the tonally unique corner of cinema Stearns has carved out for himself. In the director's movies, life is not something to be celebrated, but a punishment to be endured; the joke at the center of "Dual" is that characters will fight each other to the death in order to secure the misery of experiencing an average existence.

Sarah (Karen Gillan) is sick. She might have a bit of a drinking problem, she...
