Monsieur Spade Season 1 Ending Explained
Image
Warning: Spoilers ahead for Monsieur Spade episode 6.

Monsieur Spade's action-packed ending is less a murder mystery-style parade of reveals, and more about bringing closure to the show’s major threads. In the previous installment, Jean-Pierre (Stanley Weber) was gunned down by Philippe Saint-André (Jonathan Zaccaï), who winds up arrested by the episode’s end. Although Philippe is finally pinned for something, Monsieur Spade episode 6 struggles to provide a clear-cut ending for the highly sought-after boy, Zayd (Ismaël Berqouch). Until the show's bitter end, various parties in Monsieur Spade's cast of characters fight for control of Zayd, a young code-breaker from Algeria.

Philippe’s plan for Zayd goes sideways, resulting in the deaths of several characters, including the hostile monk and the private investigator Mr. Khan. Elsewhere, Cynthia Fitzsimmons (Rebecca Root) kills George Fitzsimmons. Eventually, Virginia Dell (Alfre Woodard) sits the show’s principal characters down to parse out their alleged claims to the boy,...

Outlander's Best Historical Villain Has An Even Wilder True Story Behind Him
Image
Season 2 of Starz' Outlander saw series leads Jamie and Claire Fraser (played by cast members Sam Heughan and Caitrona Balfe) making new lives for themselves in France in an attempt to halt the Jacobite Rebellion of 1745, in particular, the deadly Battle of Culloden. Upon their arrival in Paris, Claire makes an enemy (but saves thousands by preventing a Smallpox outbreak). This enemy is the Count of St. Germain (played by Stanley Weber), a French noble who was a real historical figure that continues to be shrouded in mystery and legend.

In Outlander, St. Germain's ship is burned for carrying infected goods. His reaction to Claire's life-saving measures on the ship's passengers and modern knowledge of the disease is immediately negative, and marks the beginning of his scheming and power-hungry ways, including his later attempted poisoning of Claire. In reality, the Count of St. Germain made a number of important contributions to science,...

Monsieur Spade Cast & Character Guide
Image
Clive Owen delivers a vulnerable and compelling performance as retired detective Sam Spade, showcasing his versatility as an actor. The show takes a fresh approach to the iconic character, exploring his retirement in the French town of Bozouls and his quest to solve the murder of six nuns. The ensemble cast, including Dnis Menochet and Matthew Beard, brings believability and genuine emotion to their roles, making the series a riveting neo-noir mystery.

Based on the iconic character created by Dashiell Hammett, Monsieur Spade is a riveting neo-noir mystery series with an impressive cast of talented actors. Although the show is inspired by an iconic literary character, Monsieur Spade is not directly based on one of Hammett's books. Instead, the show takes place long after the events of Detective Sam Spade's most famous appearance in the celebrated classic The Maltese Falcon. Monsieur Spade Season 2 Gets Hopeful Response & Pitch From Clive Owen
Image
Clive Owen is hopeful for a Monsieur Spade season 2, suggesting a return to San Francisco to investigate the detective's past. Season 1 left the door open for more story, exploring Sam Spade's relationship with Teresa. The future of Monsieur Spade is uncertain, pending AMC's decision, despite positive critical reception and potential for more mysteries.

Clive Owen hopes Monsieur Spade season 2 happens, and has a pitch for what it should be about. Dashiell Hammett’s iconic detective made an unexpected return in AMC’s six-episode drama, which picks up Spade’s story 20 years after the events of The Maltese Falcon, with the former San Francisco gumshoe now retired and living in southern France. Owen may not get to wear Humphrey Bogart’s trenchcoat and hat, but Spade still needs his sharp detective skills and sharper wit as a mystery begins unfolding in his sun-splashed new home.

Clive Owen-Starring Crime Drama ‘Monsieur Spade’ Acquired for International Distribution Ahead of EFM by Fifth Season (Exclusive)
Image
Film and TV studio Fifth Season has secured international distribution rights to “Monsieur Spade,” the crime drama series starring and executive produced by Clive Owen.

Fifth Season will represent the title at the upcoming Berlin European Film Market.

The six-episode series is based on Dashiell Hammett’s hard-boiled private detective Sam Spade, the protagonist of 1930 novel “The Maltese Falcon,” adapted several times for the screen, most notably in 1941 by John Huston with Humphrey Bogart as the sleuth.

In the series, the year is 1963, and legendary detective Spade (Owen) is enjoying retirement in the South of France. Spade’s life in Bozouls is peaceful and quiet, but the rumoured return of his old adversary will change everything. Six beloved nuns have been brutally murdered, and as the town grieves, secrets emerge and new leads are established. Spade learns the murders are connected to a mysterious child, who is believed to possess great powers.

‘Monsieur Spade’ Makes Clive Owen a Classic Noir Hero in the Best Kind of Fanfiction: TV Review
Image
All works of IP exploitation are, on some level, legitimized fanfiction. Once divorced from the original author, the line that separates a franchise’s sequel, prequel or reboot from the average post on Wattpad is a great deal of money and the blessing of an estate and/or corporation. But even with this baseline, the AMC limited series “Monsieur Spade” is an especially unabashed act of wish fulfillment through and for a beloved protagonist. The namesake of “Monsieur Spade” is none other than Sam Spade (Clive Owen), the private investigator who headlined the Dashiell Hammett novel turned John Huston film noir “The Maltese Falcon,” plus a handful of Hammett short stories published in the 1930s. For their spin on Spade, series creators Tom Fontana (“Oz”) and Scott Frank (“The Queen’s Gambit”) send the sleuth to the south of France, where he spends a few weeks of his not-so-peaceful retirement looking...

‘Monsieur Spade’: Clive Owen Detective Series Is a Big Disappointment
Image
For a character who is at the center of one full-length story, The Maltese Falcon, Sam Spade is as iconic as it gets in the world of detective fiction. Dashiell Hammett’s book, and John Huston’s 1941 movie adaptation with Humphrey Bogart, loom impossibly large over the gumshoe genre, to the point where Spade is just as famous as Philip Marlowe and Mike Hammer, who have appeared in far more novels and films over the years.

But the Sam Spade who appears in the new miniseries Monsieur Spade is not...

‘Monsieur Spade’ Review: Clive Owen Gives AMC’s France-Set Sam Spade Series a Raison d’Etre
Image
If you’re on any form of social media, you probably know that on January 1, an early incarnation of Mickey Mouse entered the public domain. This prompted the usual memes putting the beloved character in decidedly adult situations and, in just a few months, we’ll be treated to a Mickey Mouse slasher film.

For a different, more pastoral, approach to elevated fan fic — this one conducted with the approval of the Dashiell Hammett Estate, rather than public domain — look to six-episode limited series Monsieur Spade, which will roll out on AMC, AMC+ and Acorn TV.

Hailing from the powerhouse creative duo of Scott Frank (The Queen’s Gambit) and Tom Fontana (Oz) and boasting a likably droll central turn by Clive Owen, Monsieur Spade takes Hammett’s Sam Spade and drops him into a bucolic retirement in the South of France. There, rather than reconfiguring the protagonist for an ironic excursion to the dark side,...

'Monsieur Spade' Sneak Peek — Clive Owen Takes on His Enemies
Image
If there’s one word of advice we’re begging you to take from our exclusive clip of Monsieur Spade, it’s to stay off of Clive Owen’s property! From what we can gather, his character, the detective Sam Spade, runs a tight ship and notices anyone lurking on his long, dirt driveway in the French countryside. The clip reveals a volatile relationship between Owen’s titular protagonist and Stanley Weber’s (Drops of God) Jean-Pierre Devereaux, as Jean-Pierre has been posted up on his motorcycle waiting to run into Sam. Equipped with a message from his friend Philippe (Jonathan Zaccaï), Jean-Pierre seems to want nothing more than to stir the pot. But, to be fair, the clip also reveals that the dashing Monsieur Spade may be trying to seduce Jean-Pierre’s wife, so it’s a little tough to distinguish who the real bad guy is here.

Monsieur Spade TV Review

Plot: The year is 1963, and the legendary Detective Sam Spade is enjoying his retirement in the South of France. Review: In the annals of the mystery genre, the names of author Dashiell Hammett and character Sam Spade are amongst the most iconic. Despite Sam Spade’s legacy thanks to the film The Maltese Falcon starring Humphrey Bogart, Hammett’s creation has only been featured in a handful of films since the 1930s. In a new AMC series...

Monsieur Spade is a neo-noir show set in the '60s, following the retired private detective Sam Spade as he investigates a series of murders in a small French town. Monsieur Spade Review: An Inconsistent, Heavy-Handed Neo-Noir
Clive Owen at an event for The International (2009)
The James Bond-esque opening sequence of Monsieur Spade sees a glimmering 1950s whip winding down a spectacular country road in the south of France. Inside the car is Sam Spade (Clive Owen) and a doe-eyed young girl, Teresa (Ella Feraud), whom the legendary detective, first introduced in Dashiell Hammett’s The Maltese Falcon, is trying to reunite with her father. When plans go awry and the pair end up stranded, they’re rescued by a glamorous French woman named Gabrielle (Chiara Mastroianni). She, we learn, will become Spade’s wife.

Flash forward eight years and Spade is a broken-hearted widower overseeing Gabrielle’s estate near the town of Bozouls, and he’s placed the teenaged Teresa (now played by Cara Bossom) in a local convent. But what led Spade to a remote town in France with the young girl in the first place? And what occurred in the subsequent eight...
