This New Horror Series Is Based on Stories From an Unsettling Subreddit
Image
Everyone knows that the internet is an excellent source of horror, both real and imaginary, and nobody knows it better than the creators of Tales From the Void, a new anthology show based on stories from a unique subreddit where users post scary stories that might be true. R/nosleep is a goldmine for fright fans, and this Screambox original series showcases some of the strangest and most original short-form frights on the web.

R/nosleep creates an extra-spooky aura with its immersion rule: the authors never break character, and readers suspend their disbelief no matter how outrageous the conceit. Some stories have already breached containment, becoming published novels and narrative podcasts, and major studios are buying up rights to popular posts. Meanwhile, Tales from the Void tides fans over with six indie horror treats.

“Tales From the Void” Creator Francesco Loschiavo Talks Giallo Inspired Episode “Starlight” [Interview]
Image
This past Sunday night brought two new episodes from Screambox’s Original Series “Tales From the Void,” an anthology series that adapts six tales of terror from the extremely popular r/NoSleep by series creator Francesco Loschiavo.

Director Maritte Lee Go’s “Carry“ and Loschiavo’s “Starlight” unleash more r/NoSleep-inspired nightmares, now streaming on Screambox. The episodes will also be available to buy or rent via electronic sell-through platforms beginning on Tuesday.

“Starlight“ marks the second of three episodes helmed by the series creator, but expect a vastly different flavor of horror this week. Loschiavo’s latest episode continues the series’ moral conundrums while venturing into bloodier Giallo territory.

“Starlight” turns r/NoSleep tale “The Million Dollar Question“ by Joao Andre Narigueta Ribeiro into a Giallo episode. Loschiavo says of his latest episode, “I started reading r/No Sleep probably back in 2012 or 2013, a little bit after it was...

“Tales from the Void” – Director Maritte Lee Go Discusses the Pregnancy Terror of “Carry” [Interview]
Image
Black As Night director Maritte Lee Go explores the horrors of motherhood in the new “Tales From the Void” episode “Carry,” which premiered yesterday on Screambox.

Two episodes premiere exclusively on Screambox every Sunday, through October 27. The episodes will also be available to buy or rent via electronic sell-through platforms the following Tuesday.

“Carry” adapts the r/NoSleep story “Pro-Life” by Grayson Grume, a story that struck a personal and timely chord for Maritte Lee Go. “‘Carry’ is about a young woman who gets married,” the filmmaker tells us. “She comes from a very, very religious family, with a religious new husband, and she becomes pregnant. The baby is diagnosed with anencephaly, which is a condition where the brain is exposed, and the skull is not present.

‘Black As Night’ Review: Turns Out Anne Rice Doesn’t Have a Monopoly on New Orleans Vampires
Image
The “Welcome to the Blumhouse” series of horror features has done well so far in showcasing diverse emerging talent, if not in hitching relevant social themes to stories that are actually scary. Another case in point is “Black As Night,” which joins “Bingo Hell” in a second annual quartet of Halloween releases rolling out on Amazon Prime.

Maritte Lee Go’s solo feature directorial debut is a sort of female African-American spin on “The Lost Boys,” chronicling what its heroine pegs as “The summer I got breasts and fought vampires.” It works well enough as a teen supernatural melodrama, reasonably slick if a tad silly — less well as straight-up horror, let alone as a commentary on race-centric historical and political issues that never feel more than pasted-on here.

Fifteen-year-old Shawna was born in the immediate wake of Hurricane Katrina. That disaster destroyed her family’s former house, as well as...

Image
A government testing facility is home to eerie experiments on people with extreme fears in Phobias, and with the new horror anthology film out now on Digital and On Demand via Vertical Entertainment, we caught up with filmmaker Maritte Lee Go to discuss her segment for the movie, Vehophobia (which she co-wrote with Broderick Engelhard), including the chilling real-life experience that inspired the story, working with Radio Silence (who executive produced the film), and she also discussed her upcoming "Welcome to the Blumhouse" movie, Black as Night.

Thanks for taking the time to answer questions for us, Maritte, and congratulations on your work in the new movie Phobias! How did you initially get involved with this anthology? Were you originally going to direct Vehophobia as a separate short film?

Maritte Lee Go: Thank you so much! I’m very excited for this to finally be released. Eric Fleischman (the producer...

"Hello Jonathan - this is our future." Vertical Ent. has released an official trailer for the anthology horror film Phobias, a freaky new horror thriller "from the executive producers of Ready or Not." This originally premiered at last year's Mammoth Film Festival, arriving on VOD later this month. Five dangerous patients, suffering from extreme phobias locked in at a government testing facility, are put to the ultimate test by a crazed doctor and his quest to weaponize fear. The film's main segments are: "Vehophobia" (fear of driving), "Hoplophobia" (fear of weapons), "Robophobia" (fear of robots or A.I.), "Atelophobia" (fear of not doing something right), "Ephebiphobia" (fear of youth), and "Outpost 37" (fear of a crazy doctor experimenting on people). Directed by Camilla Belle, Maritte Lee Go, Joe Sill, Jess Varley, Chris von Hoffmann; and starring Alexis Knapp, Charlotte McKinney, Lauren Miller Rogen, and Leonardo Nam. This looks freaky. James Jude Courtney in Halloween Kills (2021)
First Look at Halloween Kills Footage Reveals Return Of Legacy Characters
James Jude Courtney in Halloween Kills (2021)
The first footage from Halloween Kills was unveiled today during Blumfest, a one-day online event focused on new and upcoming movie and TV projects from the Blumhouse production company.

The sequel to 2018’s Halloween, the successful, acclaimed reboot and follow-up to John Carpenter’s original 1978 classic, is bringing back several legacy characters from that movie, with the teaser giving us our first quick glimpses of three of them. Take a look and see if you can spot them!

At approximately :20 in the 36-second trailer, that is Nancy Stephens as Nurse Marion Chambers, who was Dr. Sam Loomis’ assistant in the original Carpenter film and played the role in Halloween II (1981) and Halloween H20 (1998). Although the character died in the latter film, the current Halloween movies pretty much ignore or retcon everything that happened in the sequels, so Marion is back!

Next up at :23 is Kyle Richards, best known...

How a Bunch of Guys Made a Movie About Teenage Female Sexuality — Tribeca 2017
Zoey Deutch in Flower (2017)

At a time when Hollywood is already taking heat for not creating enough opportunities for women filmmakers, having a group of men tell a story about a sexually adventurous teenage girl could be seen as playing with fire.
