After S.W.A.T. ended its eight-season run last month, star Jay Harrington was almost just as surprised about the spin-off as fans.
The actor who played Sgt. David ‘Deacon’ Kay said he didn’t hear about the off-shoot S.W.A.T. Exiles, “not once,” while filming the final season of the CBS parent series, but was given a head’s up via text from returning star Shemar Moore a day before the news went live.
“It was the day before. Shemar reached out to to all of us to say, ‘This is what’s going on…,’ and, you know, there’s talk that they’ll reach out to us about stuff,” explained Harrington to TVLine. “He wanted to be the one to tell us, and say ‘your reps will find out shortly.’ That’s when I told my reps, and they had no idea.”

S.W.A.T. Exiles spoilers and updates reveal S.W.A.T. fans came together to prevent the show’s cancellation; however, when a spinoff was revealed, only one original cast member was cast.
This announcement led to significant backlash for lead actor, Shemar Moore, who has played Sergeant Daniel “Hondo” Harrelson Jr. since the show’s inception.
The Spinoff Was Announced
When CBS revealed in March that Season 8 would be the final season for S.W.A.T., fans of the police drama came together to try to save it once again.
The show had faced cancellation in both 2023 and 2024, only to be saved at the last moment. Season 7 was initially meant to be the last, but CBS surprised everyone with a renewal.
Two key stars of S.W.A.T. were written out at the end of Season 7. Kenny Johnson (Dominique Luca), and Alex Russell (Jim Street), were both moved to recurring roles in Season 7 and eventually exited the show.

S.W.A.T. fans have been on an emotional rollercoaster over the past two years, mourning the series’ cancellation and rejoicing in its subsequent resurrection — three times each.
Like the action drama’s first two comebacks at CBS — its surprising cancellation reversal in 2023 and equally surprising 2024 Season 8 renewal after Season 7 had been billed as final — the most recent one was a cause for celebration, at least at the beginning.
And like the previous two saves, that last one also came as a surprise, two and a half months after S.W.A.T.’s latest (and permanent) cancellation by CBS and only 3 days after its series finale aired on the broadcast network. On Sunday night, S.W.A.T. studio Sony Pictures Television announced that it was extending the franchise with a spinoff series, S.W.A.T. Exiles, headlined by original series’ star Shemar Moore reprising his character as Daniel “Hondo” Harrelson.

CBS’s action drama series S.W.A.T. has been kicking doors down since 2017. The show was the reboot of the 1975 TV series. It followed Shemar Moore’s Sergeant Daniel ‘Hondo’ Harrelson and his team of LAPD officers and gave us eight seasons full of action and social commentary. But even though the show was a success, it had its own challenges.
S.W.A.T. has been cancelled many times before, and it was the fans’ love that kept bringing it back again and again. But now, the series marked its end with Season 8. However, that doesn’t mean that fans won’t see Hondo back in action. A new spinoff series has already been announced, which will keep the legacy of the original alive. But before that, let’s explore what happened with the original series and what the spinoff brings to the table.

'I'm the Tom Brady of S.W.A.T.': Shemar Moore Opens Up on Hondo Getting His Own Spinoff in New Video
S.W.A.T. fans have something to look forward to after the cancellation, Sergeant Hondo is soldiering on in a "bigger, bolder" spinoff. Shemar Moore has a message for longtime co-stars who won't be part of the new crew.
Shemar Moore rallied fans to support the S.W.A.T. spinoff in an Instagram video. "The game has changed. But S.W.A.T. Exiles, baby! Bigger, bolder. S.W.A.T. on steroids," he teased. Exiles was confirmed shortly after the S.W.A.T. finale, but it's yet to be confirmed if any of the co-stars will return in the new show. Moore hinted at a creative overhaul, however: "Nobody likes change," he said. "I understand that. I get it 100%. But without change, you can't grow. You can't win without taking your lumps…. It ain't easy making it in the game of Hollywood. It ain't. TV shows don't last eight years anymore."

Shemar Moore will not apologize for continuing S.W.A.T. without his former squad.
In a lengthy Instagram video, in which Moore acknowledges that he “might catch some flack from the industry with what I’m about to say,” TV’s Hondo refers to himself as “the Tom Brady of S.W.A.T.,” and says it’s up to the “team” on the recently announced Exiles spinoff to “keep on pushing with their quarterback.”

The end of an era will finally arrive later this week when S.W.A.T. bows out following a largely successful eight-season run. Despite the hopes of fans and cast members that the series might receive a last-minute decision to pull it back from the edge of extinction, the end is nigh for Hondo (Shemar Moore) and the rest of his tactical team. As we march towards the series finale, executive producer, Andrew Dettmann, has filled in followers on what to expect from what will certainly be an explosive farewell.
Teasing the episode that will serve as a sendoff for the characters we’ve come to know and love over the last almost decade, Dettmann told TV Insider,
“Heading into the finale, Hondo is going to be challenged to keep the team together. He has always referred to and thought of 20-Squad as a family, but now that notion will be tested like never before…...

Having already been cancelled twice, CBS' hit series S.W.A.T. now faces a further third cancellation following the upcoming May finale of its eighth season. This time, said cancellation seems more final than before, with S.W.A.T. fans desperately hoping their favorite procedural won't actually be laid to rest for good. Before any sort of permanent resolution may be decided, there's the small matter of a two-part, two-hour special finale that will see Shemar Moore and the rest of the Twenty Squad face their toughest challenge yet, certainly if the promo for the finale is anything to go by.

S.W.A.T. fans certainly haven't had it easy. Despite the procedural pulling in strong numbers across its eight-season run to date, the show has now officially been cancelled a remarkable three times, with the most recent seeming to be a permanent decision. After it had already been cancelled twice, March brought about the sad news that CBS would leave S.W.A.T. by the wayside following the upcoming May finale of its eighth season. Since then, fans have been doing their best to enjoy what is left, with the most recent, explosive 19th episode of the season sadly giving way to the fact that just three outings for Shemar Moore and the rest of the Twenty Squad remain.
The upcoming twentieth episode, directed by former star Alex Russell and penned by Sarah Alderson, looks to be one of the most tense-fueled episodes of the season yet, certainly if the below promo is anything to go by.

It was a sad day for S.W.A.T. fans earlier this month when CBS announced that, after nine seasons, the network would be canceling the hour-long drama starring Shemar Moore, Jay Harrington, David Lim, Patrick St. Esprit, Anna Enger Ritch, and Annie Ilonzeh. The network has tried this before, initially canceling S.W.A.T. in May 2023 after six seasons, only to renew it for a seventh, and supposedly final, season just 72 hours later. Before the seventh season could finish airing in April 2024, CBS opted to renew the show for another 22-episode season instead of taking the show off the air as planned. Unfortunately for S.W.A.T. fans, the eighth season didn't bring in enough of an audience for CBS to let the show continue into its ninth season.
While lovers of S.W.A.T. and its cast have plenty to be disappointed about, Shemar Moore fans specifically might be finding a silver lining. The day before...

After eight seasons, it seems Swat’s time might finally be coming to an end after CBS opted not to renew the series for a ninth season – canceling the show for a third time. It’s been quite a journey for the long-running series both for its cast and its fans who have helped the show evade cancellation twice before.
While CBS originally canceled the show after season 6 with no planned ending, the network reversed its decision just days later after fans and the cast vocally spoke out to express their desire for more. A seventh season was ordered which was supposed to be the show’s official final season, but then CBS surprised fans again by ordering an eighth season and reversing its cancellation decision for a second time in a row.

Swat has had a long, singular journey. No show can lay claim to being canceled twice and brought back twice. It was the third cancelation, however, that proved to be the killer. It's unlikely Swat will be able to bounce back a third time, but what it can do is given fans a series finale they will never forget.
CBS confirmed that the two part series finale for Swat will air on Friday, May 16. It will mark the end of an era, but the synopsis for the finale reveals that there will be plenty of action to make it worth our while. The finale will bring back a "ghost from the past" that will shake Hondo (Shemar Moore) to his core. Why? Well, evidently, the returning character was long thought to be dead, and has resurfaced as a "violent car thief."

The Swat saga has been difficult. We have had the emotional highs of seeing the show get brought back from the dead twice, and experienced the emotional lows of seeing it get canceled three times. The math obviously doesn't come out in the show's favor.
We always knew that the show was treading on thin ice as it approached the finale of its eighth season, but we didn't expect CBS to pull the plug this early. The rest of season eight is going to be tough on the cast, crew and fans for obvious reasons, but the silver lining is that we get to appreciate the episodes that we have left.

Swat has been on the ropes before. Twice, actually. The procedural drama has done the nearly impossible two separate times, which is secure renewal after being canceled. It does not, however, look like the third time will be a charm.
CBS has canceled Swat again, and barring some massive changes, the upcoming finale will double as the show's series finale. It may very well be the last time we get to see our favorite characters. To make matters worse, one of its stars, Anna Enger Ritch, claimed that fans will get to the credits and want so much more.

CBS’s Swat just got canceled again, but the series’ star hasn’t given up hope. Shemar Moore posted on Instagram asking Netflix to consider picking up the drama for a ninth season. Moore also pitched it to NBC, ABC, and Fox, suggesting the cast and crew still have a lot of love for the show, as does the series’ passionate fan base.

On the heels of S.W.A.T.‘s cancellation by CBS — presumably final after a back-and-forth that began in May 2023 — the cast of the Shemar Moore vehicle voiced that the series finale will leave viewers “wanting so much more.”
Speaking to TVLine, actress Anna Enger Ritch, who plays officer Zoe Powell, said of the closing installment: “It will make you not want this show to end. You’ll want to keep watching what happens. There are so many avenues and directions to go, so many stories to tell, so many personal things… It will leave you wanting so much more.”
Meanwhile, her co-star Annie Ilonzeh — a new addition this season as a recurring cast member — added, “You go, ‘Oh my gosh, that just happened!’ And, ‘Wait, I need more!’ We definitely don’t button anything up. We leave you guessing and very curious for more.”

Whereas S.W.A.T.‘s May 2024 “series finale” — which was written and filmed before the show got un-cancelled for a second time — tied things up in a neat enough bow, it sounds like the CBS procedural’s next swan song will really leave fans clamoring for more.
Speaking with TVLine on Feb. 26 — a little over a week before S.W.A.T. got cancelled for a third time — Anna Enger Ritch, who plays Officer Zoe Powell, teased the Season 8 finale thusly:

Hondo and his team won't be back in action for the 2025-26 TV season. CBS has cancelled the Swat series for a third and likely final time, so there won't be a ninth season. The show's eighth season will finish airing in May. There are nine episodes remaining.
A police action drama series, the Swat TV show stars Shemar Moore, Jay Harrington, David Lim, Patrick St. Esprit, Anna Enger Ritch, and Niko Pepaj. The crime thriller centers on Sergeant Daniel “Hondo” Harrelson (Moore), a Los Angeles native and former Marine who's been tapped to lead a new “last stop” Special Weapons And Tactics unit (S.W.A.T.). The rest of the team includes seasoned officer David “Deacon” Kay (Harrington), informant-connected Victor Tan (Lim), tough and loyal Zoe Powell (Ritch), and Miguel “Miko” Alfaro (Pepaj), a headstrong officer who overcame a...

S.W.A.T. has run out of lives. CBS has canceled the police drama starring Shemar Moore, now in its eighth season that will wrap in May.
If you are having a case of déjà vu, that is because, following a string of early renewals, S.W.A.T. was dramatically canceled in May 2023 after six seasons, only for CBS to reverse the decision days later with a pickup of what was announced at the time as a seventh and final season. Flash-forward to May 2024 when S.W.A.T. surprisingly was renewed for an eighth season.
Don’t expect another miraculous reprieve; this time the decision is believed to be final — and permanent.
During the past two years, S.W.A.T. lead studio Sony Pictures Television was able to propose financial terms that were appealing to CBS, sealing eleventh-hour pickups. This time, I hear, CBS did not engage in renewal talks, opting instead to end the long-running series outright.

It might actually be the end of the road for “S.W.A.T.”
CBS has opted not to renew the Shemar Moore-led procedural for a ninth season, an individual with knowledge told TheWrap. The news comes as “S.W.A.T.” rolls out its eighth and now final season, whose season finale will now serve as a series finale.
The cancellation marks the third time CBS has opted not to renew “S.W.A.T.,” with the show being canceled after six seasons in May 2023 before the network reversed its decision and renewed “S.W.A.T.” for a seventh and final season less than a week later after Moore and others spoke out about the cancellation. “We have listened to our viewers and their outpouring of passion for ‘S.W.A.T.,’” CBS Entertainment president Amy Reisenbach and Sony Pictures Television Studios president Katherine Pope wrote in a joint statement at the time.

CBS has canceled its long-running action drama “S.W.A.T.” after eight seasons and 163 episodes, the show’s producers and stars were told on Thursday. But this represents the third time “S.W.A.T.” has been cancelled by the Eye net — so it’s probably tough to tell at this point if it’s really, really the end.
The series, which stars Shemar Moore as Daniel “Hondo” Harrelson, was brought back to life for a Season 8 after CBS previously announced that its seventh season would be its last. And that wasn’t its first time, as CBS also axed the show in 2023 after Season 6, before announcing it would return for one last run.
In both cases, after the initial cancellation, CBS, Sony Pictures TV and CBS Studios were able to work out the deal to bring the show back at a license fee that made sense for all involved. But this time, it appears...

This week on NCIS, the plan to draw out an elusive thief introduced us to a woman with the potential to steal… Jimmy Palmer’s heart.
The Case of the Week is set in motion by Jimmy’s daughter Victoria (played by Brian Dietzen’s real-life kid, Elle Graper) revealing to Special Agent Nick —and not her dad, who is “just an M.E.” — that she had found a cache of cash when out one night, though she lied about where, at first, because she had quietly bailed on participating in the school science fair this year, much to her father’s dismay.

Despite only being on the air since 2016, S.W.A.T. is already in the middle of airing its eighth season, which is set to conclude later this year after 22 episodes, an increase from Season 7's 13-episode run. Shemar Moore stars in the lead role of Sergeant Daniel ‘Hondo’ Harrelson in S.W.A.T., with Jay Harrington and David Lim featuring alongside him as Sergeant David ‘Deacon’ Kay and Officer Victor Tan. One of the newer characters to enter the show is Officer Zoe Powell, who first made her debut in 2022 and has become a recurring character ever since. During a recent interview with Collider’s Michael Zimmerman, S.W.A.T. star Anna Enger Ritch spoke about Zoe’s development from being a lone wolf to now more of a team player:...

We’ve seen them put their lives on the line time and time again for the citizens of Los Angeles, but what kinds of circumstances do the actors behind the fan-favorite series, S.W.A.T., hope to see their characters in in the future? Well, if you were to ask series stars Annie Ilonzeh and Anna Enger Ritch, like Collider’s Michael Zimmermann did, you’d get a pretty personal answer. That’s because the two women would like to see more pieces of the story, investigating their characters’ lives after they take off their badges and go home. Recently speaking with the series’ stars just ahead of the penultimate episode of Season 8, Zimmermann picked their brains about where they would like to see the storyline go, should the title be renewed for a ninth season.

This week on CBS’ S.W.A.T., it is high drama (on multiple levels) when a hiking expedition for teammates Zoe Powell and Devin Gamble turns into a showdown with an illegal weed farm they stumble upon, run by a dangerous cartel.
As if that doesn’t promise up enough tension, Powell has been tasked by Hondo with convincing benched Gamble to sign the statement that she needs to in order to return to active duty on S.W.A.T.

S.W.A.T. fans have been through the wringer during the show’s eight seasons. Is it canceled? Or is it renewed? Do we know? Does CBS?
S.W.A.T is back for now, but some things are different. The new 20-Squad isn’t your grandparents’ version of S.W.A.T. How do viewers like the new look and the younger squad?

However, CBS reversed its previous decision to cancel Swat and greenlit season 8.
