Capcom's perennially popular survival horror video game franchise "Resident Evil" has been adapted for both film and television over the years, in live-action and animation. The franchise's cinematic debut began in 2002, loosely following the original game's plot of specialists investigating the nefarious pharmaceutical company the Umbrella Corporation. This leads to Umbrella unleashing the T-Virus, a genetically engineered virus that transforms those infected into ravenous, undead zombies.

While the live-action films have handled the video game source material with varying amounts of fidelity and controversy, there has also been a line of CG animated movies set in the same continuity as the games. Exclusive: Freeform has passed on Close Up, the hourlong suspense drama pilot executive produced by How to Get Away With Murder creator Peter Nowalk and Mary Rohlich (Atypical). The series was set up at ABC Signature, which is part of Disney TV Studios, as part of Nowalk’s overall deal at ABC Studios and its cable/streaming division ABC Signature.

In today’s TV news roundup, NBC announces a concert special commemorating Dolly Parton’s 50th anniversary with the Grand Ole Opry, and Netflix reveals the premiere date of and first look at “Prank Encounters.”

Casting

Fivel Stewart, Anthony Keyvan, Karin Konoval, Yaani King Mondschein, Sean Blakemore, Jennifer Spence, Megan Charpentier and Millicent Simmonds have been cast in Freeform’s new series, “Close Up.” The drama’s hails from executive producers Pete Nowalk and Mary Rohlich.

Colin Woodell (“The Originals”) has been cast as a series regular in HBO Max’s forthcoming “The Flight Attendant.” He will play Buckley, who is described as “an out of work actor and whiskey connoisseur,” in the black comedy thriller that also stars Kaley Cuoco and Michiel Huisman.

Netflix announced “Prank Encounters” will premiere Oct. 25. Hosted by Gaten Matarazzo (“Stranger Things”), the series is a hidden-camera prank show that combines with of hilarity and terror.

Whenever an actor steps behind the camera, one can’t help but wonder why they chose the material that they chose for their debut. It doesn’t matter whether you’re Bradley Cooper remaking A Star Is Born last year or Greg Kinnear this week with Phil. You just are inherently curious. It’s especially the case here, as Kinnear proves a capable filmmaker, though one in need of a stronger script. Yes, while Kinnear’s acting and directing here are solid, the writing isn’t up to snuff. The end result is a dramedy that is at times inane and at times moving, though unfortunately more so the former than the latter. At the movie’s start, Dr. Phil Maguire (Kinnear) is a dentist on the verge of suicide. In fact, he’s planning to do it, but just sort of chickens out. Then, a colleague refers a patient over to him.

There’s a feeling I always have when I’m watching Greg Kinnear in a movie. He can be a terrific actor. Yet even when he’s just okay, Kinnear seems like such a nice guy that I want him to succeed — I feel almost protective of him, as if he were my little brother. That more-than-skin-deep geniality is the source of Kinnear’s appeal, going all the way back to his hosting gig on “Talk Soup,” where he had the weird ability to invest even pure snark with good vibes.

Given that, when I watched “Phil,” the first movie Kinnear has directed (he also stars in it), you can bet that the protective impulse was in high gear. Yet “Phil,” I have to report, is one of those precious indie nothings that hits you like dandelion fluff. It’s the sort of film that still has its original, now-changed...

We meet Phil McGuire (Greg Kinnear) exiting his parked car while still in traffic to climb up a bridge railing. It’s a one hundred-plus foot drop into the water and he imagines taking the plunge before a group of teens with cellphones outstretched jolt him from the morbid sensation with excitable demands that he jump so they can enjoy the carnage. That’s a bold tonal mood on behalf of screenwriter Stephen Mazur and director Kinnear (his debut) because there’s actual dejection on their faces upon realizing Phil won’t comply with their Faces of Death desire to go viral. Here’s a man in obvious psychological pain and we’re asked to shrug the situation off for the first of many cheap laughs in a film that otherwise attempts heartfelt empathy.

We have some terrible news to pass along today, as we can report the internet sensation known as Grumpy Cat has sadly passed away. On the 7-year-old feline's official Twitter account, a post from her human family states Grumpy died due to complications from a recent urinary tract infection, despite the best efforts of top professionals. According to the post, the cat died at home on Tuesday morning "in the arms of her mommy, Tabatha." Referring to the kitty as their "baby and a cherished member of the family," Grumpy's owners say her spirit will live on through her fans.

Original Lethal Weapon star Danny Glover has officially joined the cast of Hulu's highly anticipated adaptation of Idw graphic novel Locke and Key. THR reports that Jack Mulhern is also joining the Carlton Cuse pilot.

Locke and Key focuses around three siblings who, after the gruesome murder of their father, move to their ancestral home in Maine only to find the house has magical keys that give them powers. What they don't know is that a demon also wants the keys, and will stop at nothing to attain them.

Glover will play Joe Ridgeway, the eccentric English teacher at Matheson Academy who becomes a mentor to the Locke children and a friend to Nina, but he also knows some of the tragic secrets Rendell kept from his family.

Glover's role is not a series regular and may be as small as a cameo.

With New Line's highly-anticipated It remake hitting theaters in just eight short days, the young cast members who make up the group known as The Losers Club appeared on ABC's Good Morning America to promote this potential blockbuster. While January doesn't often produce huge box office hits, fans have come out in full force for Oscar-nominated films like Hidden Figures and La La Land, which both continue to fare well with solid box office numbers throughout the month. Last weekend, M. Night Shyamalan's Split over-performed with an impressive box office win with $40 million, and it was certainly expected to repeat, even with three new releases hitting theaters. Joining the box office fray this weekend is Sony's Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, Universal's A Dog's Purpose and The Weinstein Company's Gold. The race was expected to be much closer, but Split took advantage of a minimal second weekend drop to easily win with $26.2 million

The estimates from Box Office Mojo reveal that Split actually expanded into 161 more theaters for a total of 3,199, which may have helped minimize the traditional second weekend drop. The M. Night Shyamalan thriller only dropped 34.3% in its second weekend,...

The month of January doesn't often usher in huge box office grosses, but horror fans came out in droves to see M. Night Shyamalan's Split, which took in just over $40 million last weekend. This thriller will have its work cut out for it this weekend, going up against three new releases, Sony's Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, Universal's A Dog's Purpose and The Weinstein Company's Gold to close out the month of January. We're predicting that, while it certainly may be a close race this weekend, Resident Evil: The Final Chapter will take down Split with a projected $21.7 million, just barely beating Split with $20.6 million.

Box Office Mojo reports that Resident Evil 6 will open in roughly 3,000 theaters, followed by A Dog's Purpose in 2,900 theaters and Gold in 2,200 theaters. As of now, Gold is sporting a middling 43% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, although Resident Evil: The Final Chapter and A Dog's Purpose...

Pennywise is back and ready to feast off fear and children. Stephen Kings’ “It” is getting a new adaptation with Bill Skarsgård taking on the role of the bloodthirsty shape-shifting clown. A new photo of the actor as the sadistic creature has been revealed, courtesy of Entertainment Weekly.

The image shows Pennywise in the labyrinth of the sewer system beneath the town of Derry, Maine, wearing a frilly white suit and face paint.

“Pennywise shows up, he’s front and center, and he does his show. He has an act,” the film’s director Andrés Muschietti told EW. “So it’s weird all the time, and every little thing implies a further threat.”

If you've been following actress Milla Jovovich on Twitter, you likely know that, over the past few days, the actress has teased that the first trailer for Resident Evil: The Final Chapter will debut on August 9. The actress also revealed that just after the trailer drops, she will be hosting a live Q&A on her Facebook page. Today, with just four days left until the trailer's debut, the actress shared a brief trailer preview that showcases the first footage of Milla Jovovich's iconic character Alice.

The video, which Milla Jovovich debuted on Twitter today, is only 16 seconds long, but we do hear Alice say she's going to "kill every last one of them," while we get a brief glimpse at a bloodied Alice riding a motorcycle through an explosion. Production wrapped back in December, with Milla Jovovich sending out the final set photos to fans, but we haven't heard much since then.

After years of development, the TV series adaptation of Idw horror comic Locke & Key is headed to Netflix soon.

The Locke & Key TV series sailed troubled waters before landing on Netflix.

The live-action adaptation was initially set for Hulu, which ordered (and shot) a pilot adapting writer Joe Hill's Idw horror comic book series, with Carlton Cuse (Lost) set to serve as showrunner. Auspiciously, Andy Muschietti directed Hulu's pilot after Doctor Strange's Scott Derrickson had to withdraw. Unfortunately, after all that, Hulu ended up passing on the project!

Netflix, however, came in for the rescue; a rescue that involved scrapping Hulu's pilot. Regardless, the Locke & Key TV series will finally arrive in February!

Following its financially successful theatrical run in 2013, the supernatural horror film Mama could get a sequel in the near future from the directors of 2014's well-received Starry Eyes.

News of the Mama sequel comes from The Hollywood Reporter, which reveals that Starry Eyes writers/directors Dennis Widmyer and Kevin Kolsch are in "final negotiations to rewrite and direct" the follow-up for Universal.

It's no surprise that Universal wants to move forward with a sequel, as the original film (directed by Andrés Muschietti and executive produced by Guillermo del Toro) was made for $15 million and ended up grossing $71 million domestically.

Mama centered on two sisters haunted by an eerie presence following their rescue from a five-year stay in the woods. We continue our hunt for an overlooked Christmas classic in the DVD bargain bin. Our latest treat? Grumpy Cat...

Grumpy Cat’s Worst Christmas Ever is a hard film to write about.

Without wishing to exaggerate its effect, it almost makes you feel like you need to unlearn everything you thought you knew about cinema in order to give it a reasonable assessment. I suppose I should start by saying it’s not a 'good film', but then value judgements feel futile in the (adorable and super-smooshy) face of Grumpy Cat. Besides, whatever insult you could level at this film’s content is redundant. Odds are it’s already been covered by the mega-meta self-loathing that oozes from every scene.

What makes it so compelling, though, is the simple fact that it exists. That you can buy it on DVD. That you didn’t just pass out...

Tim McGraw has been added to the cast of The Shack, an upcoming film based on the 2007 bestselling novel by William Paul Young. The faith-based drama stars Sam Worthington as a father whose young daughter was kidnapped and believed to have been murdered while on a family camping trip. Years later, he receives a note from "Papa" — which is his wife's nickname for God — asking him to return to the shack where his daughter's bloodied clothes were found. It is there where his mourning is met with a spiritual epiphany.

The Games Maker has already generated more than $5m at the box office in Latin America, where Disney controls rights.

Joseph Fiennes, David Mazouz and Ed Asner star in the 3D story of a young boy whose love of board games catapaults him into a quest to find his missing parents, save the city of Zyl and overthrow the evil inventor in charge of the mysterious “games maker” competition.

Juan Pablo Buscarini directed The Games Maker from the children’s novel by Pablo De Santis. The film shot in Argentina and completed post-production in Canada. Tom Cavanagh, Valentina Lodovini and Megan Charpentier also star.

It’s a film starring Sundance Film Fest creator Robert Redford and another film starring Sundance mainstay James Franco that are the latest and last items to officially pad the 2015 edition. Ken Kwapis’ A Walk in the Woods (surely to be discussed as a companion piece to Gus Van Sant’s heavy Cannes contender The Sea of Trees) and Rupert Goold’s directorial debut, True Story – a story that is stranger than fiction close out the Premieres selections. Also announced we find items for New Frontier, Sundance Kids and the From the Collection items. And while the line-up is complete, the actual final piece to the puzzle might actually be a secret screening or two. Sundance: Robert Redford stars opposite Nick Nolte in Salt Lake City gala

Festival top brass announced on December 15 a volley of 10 additional films and New Frontier installations.

The late arrivals mean the festival will screen 123 features overall from 29 countries culled from 12,166 submissions. A total of 106 of the features will be world premieres and 45 of the total line-up hail from first-time film-makers,

Sundance is set to run from January 22-February 1.

Late in Lifetime's "Grumpy Cat's Worst Christmas Ever" TV-movie, the cat that launched a thousand memes objects to a plot twist by asking, "Is this not my movie?" The film (it debuts Saturday night at 8), written by "SpongeBob" vet and "Garfield: A Tale of Two Kitties" director Tim Hill (who also directed this) and Jeff Morris, seems at war with itself as to how much it should — or can — be Grumpy Cat's movie, and the answer is "not enough," unfortunately. Grumpy Cat's Worst Christmas Ever movie actually exists and it will air on Lifetime. I'm sure some of you will even watch it because we're bound to have to some Grumpy Cat fans as readers. I personally don't get society's strange fascination with this whole Grumpy Cat thing, but that's the kind of society we live in today, folks. Here's the first trailer for the movie that features the voice of Aubrey Plaza as Grumpy Cat. The movie looks stupid as hell, and even the voice of Plaza can't save it. This holiday season, Lifetime will attempt to answer the question that has been plaguing filmmakers everywhere since the dawn of social media – can we realistically pad an internet meme out to feature length? Grumpy Cat is great and all, but I never would have thought we’d get a Grumpy Cat movie, let alone a Christmas movie with Aubrey Plaza voicing our favorite scowling Internet sensation.
