Director Christopher Landon returns with high-concept suspense thriller Drop, which cleverly combines the anxiety of a first date with the type of unseen assailant threat familiar from films like Phone Booth, Grand Piano and the more recent Carry On. As such, it’s hugely enjoyable, and the sort of movie where the ridiculous contrivance is a big part of the fun.
After a tense prologue, which isn’t explained until later and could either be a flashback or a flash-forward, Drop opens with single mother Violet nervously preparing for a first date, encouraged by her younger sister Jen (Violett Beane), who will be babysitting Violet’s 5 year-old son Toby (Jacob Robinson) for the evening. Already anxious because this is her first date since...

Ah, at the start of Spring what’s more romantic than a first date? Well, at least there’s the possibility of romance. Yes, that initial meeting is often the start of a cinema love story, or often a comedy (including lotsa’ ‘rom-coms”). But that’s not the case with this week’s new release from the folks at Blumhouse (that should give you a huge hint). In this flick, the jitters of a dinner with a new “potential” turns into outright terror when the evening’s intimate meal is “cyber-hijacked” by an evil manipulator. The couple at the center of this thriller barely make it to the appetizer before the “meet cute” gives way to suspense when some deadly messages begin to Drop.
This story actually starts with a scene full of violence and terror, though it’s unclear about its “placement” in the tale. Is it a “flash-forward...

On June 11, 2018, it was announced that genre regular James Wan’s company Atomic Monster was teaming up with Amblin to produce a remake of the 1990 “nature run amok” horror film Arachnophobia – and almost exactly four years later, we heard that that Christopher Landon, director of Happy Death Day and Freaky, would be writing and directing the new take on Arachnophobia. Fourteen months after that, it was announced that Landon was set to direct Scream 7. But, as it turns out, Landon won’t be making either of those movies – and in a new interview with Vanity Fair, he revealed exactly why he stepped away from both projects.
As we all know, Scream 7 completely fell apart around Landon. At one time, it was expected that Scream (2022) and Scream VI leads Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega would be the leads in this sequel as well. But then Barrera was fired from...

Editor’s Note: This review was originally published during the 2025 SXSW Film & TV Festival. Universal Pictures releases “Drop” in theaters Friday, April 11.
It’s a good thing director Christopher Landon‘s exit from the “Scream” franchise cleared his schedule: The punchy if risible single-location thriller “Drop” delivers a far more pleasurable jolt than any I.P. could have. Here, “The Bold Type” and “The White Lotus” TV comedy breakout Meghann Fahy proves herself a terrific (and Hitchcock-shade-of-blonde) genre actress as a traumatized widow on the worst first date of her life. Luckily, that first date is in the soothing, handsome presence of Brandon Sklenar as a press photographer with baggage of his own.
Running a cool 90 minutes, “Drop” takes place almost entirely in a top-of-the-world kind of high-rise restaurant in Chicago, where Violet (Fahy) is meeting Henry (Sklenar) off a Tinder-like app, and where this appears to be Violet...

What begins as an ordinary first date quickly descends into chaos in Drop, the new high-concept thriller from Christopher Landon, whose gift for genre-blending was previously on full display in Happy Death Day and Freaky. Set entirely over the course of one harrowing night, the film sees White Lotus star Meghann Fahy thrust into a waking nightmare driven by a series of mysterious, increasingly dangerous phone messages.
Fahy plays Violet, a widowed mother cautiously stepping back into the world of dating after years of grieving. Her nerves are eased when she meets Henry, played by Brandon Sklenar (It Ends with Us), whose charm and easy manner appear to offer a spark of new beginnings. But things sour fast. Violet’s phone begins to ping with anonymous messages and cruelly tailored memes – personal jabs that quickly shift from irritating to deeply menacing.
What begins as psychological manipulation escalates to full-blown terror.

Goofy, high-concept horror efforts succeed or fail based on more than just the talent involved or their dedication to the bit. Christopher Landon, as evidenced by genre mashups like Happy Death Day, Freaky, and Heart Eyes, understands that when the stakes are sky high, the emotions need to be firmly grounded. This is especially apropos for Drop, a high-rise-set, single-location thriller that delivers its shocks liberally mixed with the easy humor and unpretentious emotionality that’s become the filmmaker’s stock in trade.
Violet (Meghann Fahy) is a thirtysomething widow and single mom still haunted by the violent death of her abusive husband. In Christopher Landon’s Drop, a widowed mother bravely returns to the dating scene only to find herself caught in an awful game of cat and mouse. Following in the footsteps of films like Phone Booth, Red Eye and, more recently, Carry-On, this Blumhouse production, which premiered at SXSW before its theatrical release in April, balances its pulpy narrative with an escalating and terrifying tension. Landon’s command of suspense, coupled with a compelling romantic thread and delightful performances from Meghann Fahy (The White Lotus) and Brandon Sklenar, make Drop a solid popcorn movie.
Like its cinematic predecessors, Drop‘s premise relies on compromised technology and nefarious anonymous actors. It’s best experienced with little to no information, so for the spoiler-averse, it’s time to abandon this review.

The Overlook Film Festival returns to “America’s most haunted city” from April 3 to 6. A cat on its ninth life, the annual event in New Orleans was founded almost a decade ago to celebrate scary movies and immersive horror experiences. This year, the festival lineup emphasizes tradition — honoring Shudder’s 10th birthday at its opening night party, programming a retro series with “Ash” director Flying Lotus, offering a conversation with genre literary legend Joe Hill, and more.
“I feel like we are standing at the crossroads of horror history,” said Michael Lerman, co-founder and director of film programming. “This year really showcases the old and new guard coming together. We have astounding debuts from exciting newcomers. We have veteran masters that keep reinventing themselves with new work. And we’re just getting started so stay tuned for more.”

Director Christopher Landon gives a behind-the-scenes look at his upcoming film Drop in the new featurette below.
“I wrote a film called Disturbia, which was Hitchcock by way of John Hughes. This felt like the evolution of that kind of a film,” Landon explains. “It straddles Hitchcock, but it’s also very much like a ’90s thriller, but it’s using very modern technology.”
Produced by Blumhouse and Platinum Dunes, the horror-thriller drops in theaters on April 11 from Universal.
Meghann Fahy (“The White Lotus”) and Brandon Sklenar (It Ends With Us) star as a couple on a blind first-date whose romantic dinner spirals into a deadly game of cat-and-mouse in which everyone’s a suspect.

The first trailer for Drop, the latest thriller from director Christopher Landon, has arrived, teasing a tension-filled rollercoaster that blends technological paranoia with classic whodunnit twists. Starring Emmy nominee Meghann Fahy (The White Lotus) and Brandon Sklenar (1923), the film is set to hit UK cinemas on 11 April 2025.
Fahy leads the cast as Violet, a widowed mother cautiously navigating her first date in years. Her nerves about the evening are briefly eased when her date, Henry (played by Sklenar), turns out to be both charming and handsome. However, what begins as a promising encounter quickly spirals into terror. Violet receives a series of anonymous, increasingly menacing messages on her phone. These “drops” start as unsettling memes but escalate into chilling threats against her young son and sister, who are at home under the watch of an unseen figure captured on Violet’s security cameras.

Freaky and Happy Death Day director Christopher Landon was supposed to be working on Scream 7 – but that project turned out to be so troubled, he had to activate his ejector seat and get out of there. While he has since been replaced on Scream 7 by Kevin Williamson, he has been busy lining up other genre projects, signing on to direct the werewolf thriller Big Bad and the “fast-paced thriller” Drop. Universal Pictures has just announced (via Deadline) release dates – in some cases, new release dates for movies that are shifting around on their schedule – for five upcoming horror films… and every one of them happens to be a Blumhouse production. The movies in question are The Woman in the Yard, Drop, The Black Phone 2, M3GAN 2.0, and Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 – and we’re about to go through them one-by-one.
First up is the thriller The Woman in the Yard, which was once set to reach theatres on January 10, 2025, but was bumped out of that date so the Blumhouse reboot of Wolf Man could move from this October to January 17th.
