Director Christopher Landon returns with high-concept suspense thriller Drop, which cleverly combines the anxiety of a first date with the type of unseen assailant threat familiar from films like Phone Booth, Grand Piano and the more recent Carry On. As such, it’s hugely enjoyable, and the sort of movie where the ridiculous contrivance is a big part of the fun.

After a tense prologue, which isn’t explained until later and could either be a flashback or a flash-forward, Drop opens with single mother Violet nervously preparing for a first date, encouraged by her younger sister Jen (Violett Beane), who will be babysitting Violet’s 5 year-old son Toby (Jacob Robinson) for the evening. Already anxious because this is her first date since...

Ah, at the start of Spring what’s more romantic than a first date? Well, at least there’s the possibility of romance. Yes, that initial meeting is often the start of a cinema love story, or often a comedy (including lotsa’ ‘rom-coms”). But that’s not the case with this week’s new release from the folks at Blumhouse (that should give you a huge hint). In this flick, the jitters of a dinner with a new “potential” turns into outright terror when the evening’s intimate meal is “cyber-hijacked” by an evil manipulator. The couple at the center of this thriller barely make it to the appetizer before the “meet cute” gives way to suspense when some deadly messages begin to Drop.

It’s a good thing director Christopher Landon‘s exit from the “Scream” franchise cleared his schedule: The punchy if risible single-location thriller “Drop” delivers a far more pleasurable jolt than any I.P. could have. Here, “The Bold Type” and “The White Lotus” TV comedy breakout Meghann Fahy proves herself a terrific (and Hitchcock-shade-of-blonde) genre actress as a traumatized widow on the worst first date of her life. Luckily, that first date is in the soothing, handsome presence of Brandon Sklenar as a press photographer with baggage of his own.

Landon's collaborative history with the indie producing studio began with 2010's Paranormal Activity 2, becoming the Paranormal Activity franchise's primary writer for almost every subsequent installment, including directing the 2014 spinoff The Marked Ones, and though he was not part of the original final installment's team, but would return for Next of Kin. Universal Pictures has just announced (via Deadline) release dates – in some cases, new release dates for movies that are shifting around on their schedule – for five upcoming horror films… and every one of them happens to be a Blumhouse production. The movies in question are The Woman in the Yard, Drop, The Black Phone 2, M3GAN 2.0, and Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 – and we’re about to go through them one-by-one.

First up is the thriller The Woman in the Yard, which was once set to reach theatres on January 10, 2025, but was bumped out of that date so the Blumhouse reboot of Wolf Man could move from this October to January 17th.
